It was a quick read but certainly wasn’t fantastic. All seemed a bit twee to me with very little character back story. Some pointless characters and pointless side plots.
In Deborah Rogers's Into Thin Air, this story is so gripping and so fast-paced to keep you at the edge of your seat. It has the intrigue of a mystery and the chills of a thriller. For Dr. Julia Norris, she's a surgeon in San Francisco when she receives a call from someone named Yasmin about her younger sister Toni. She's gone missing. At first, she didn't know what to believe until she calls her again and finds out for herself. Toni's missing in Turkey. So she goes on medical leave and talks to her ex Leo about going down to Turkey. They go down together and discover how corrupt people are in Turkey and violent things can be. For Julia, she goes through a labyrinthe of mixed emotions from wondering if she's dead or alive. Every time she learns something new, it's dark and dangerous, leaving her with more questions than answers every time until she gets closer to the truth. And it brings her closer to Leo too while she holds herself together until they discover what happened to her in a twisted climax to leave you speechless in the end.
A handful of grammatical errors took the sheen of this one. It’s good, but not great. I don’t usually read thrillers, simply not my area of interest, and this hasn’t persuaded me otherwise, at least not by this author. The storyline is mildly gripping but I figured out the culprit simply by choosing the least likely candidate. The ending is surprisingly abrupt.
This is part of the Deborah Rogers Standalone series and the main character is Dr Julia Norris, a cardiothoracic surgeon, who gets an email out of the blue from a stranger, telling her that her younger sister Toni is missing in Istanbul. She was supposed to meet up with a fellow group of backpackers, but hadn’t shown up, so an alarm was raised with her family as they all agree to beforehand. Only problem is that Julia doesn’t want to deal with her little sister’s issues and reckons she is just off enjoying herself as she usually is. She hasn’t seen Toni for about two years and has no wish to see her, as her sister had messed about her life enough over the years. After a bad night’s sleep worrying that maybe she shouldn’t ignore this, she tries to report her sister missing at the local police station, but ends up being referred to the US Embassy in Istanbul. She gets a call back the next night, to tell her that her sister’s backpack and passport had been found along the waterfront in Istanbul, and that they were starting an investigation.
Julia worries that if she ignores her sister’s disappearance and thinks of it as just her being forgetful or free spirited and that she would turn up somewhere else, she will regret it forever, f something really has happened to her sister. When Toni’s backpack and passport are found it solidifies her need to travel to Istanbul herself to help look for Toni. At the airport, she meets her ex-husband Leo, who has decided to come out with her, whether she wants him to or not. Once they arrive, they end up at a small hotel instead of the embassy and Julia trusts no one. They meet up with Toni’s travel buddies, but find out later, that Yasmin, the one who emailed Julia to let her know Toni was missing, had to be prompted by some of the others to actually do it. Something is up and lots of people are covering things up and not telling them the truth. Even their police contact and the embassy liaison seem to be little to further the search. Neither Julia nor Leo can speak Turkish and even though they put up posters, only one leads to any news.
Everything is pointing to Toni having been abducted or possibly caught up in a serial rapists net, but he normally lets the girls go and they were paid to keep quiet. There is more to her disappearance than it seems on the surface and there seems to be a high level of corruption from the police all the way up to the embassy. Why will no one help them to find her sister? It is only Julia’s persistence that gets them anywhere near to any clues and they are drawn into a dangerous game of cat and mouse, trying to find a serial rapist with lots of connections and CCTV images and evidence to point to where Toni may have been taken. Once outside the main areas of Istanbul, CCTV is not a common occurrence and only luck will help to point the way. A chase will lead them across the country, with only a small hope of finding Toni alive at the end of it. Pushing too hard could get Julia and Leo themselves killed as influential people are being dragged through the web of deceit. An intriguing and complex tale of how easy it is to disappear when young and carefree in a foreign country and how difficult it is to find one person amongst millions! I look forward to reading more of this authors books, for some equally exciting reads. I received an ARC copy of this book from BookSprout and I have freely given my own opinion of the book above.

I was not a fan of how this book started. The gory first chapter involving a surgery on a woman was not very appealing to me and I almost stopped reading the book. But the book blurb interested me, telling of a person going missing so I decided to read on. I was not disappointed. They story was captivating, fast passed and made up for the terrible first chapter. I enjoyed the story and the suspense mixed in with mystery. The epilogue brought more gory, but it didn't last long. I had no choice but to read it if I wanted to see how the book ended. I understand the protagonist is a surgeon but the gory operation scenes were not necessary for the story to be interesting and I find they add nothing to the book. Minus the first chapter and the beginning of the epilogue the book was great.
A surgeon searches for her missing sister in Turkey
Surgeon Julia is busy working in her career when she receives a strange message. Her sister is missing somewhere in Turkey. She shrugs it off because her sister is a flighty, immature woman who has had wanderlust. Until, she gets another more concerning message. Despite being told NOT to fly to Turkey, she is stubbornly determined to find her sister and chew her out for worrying everyone. Readers are swept into the search while visualizing wonderful landscapes, architecture, some culture and learn of Turkey's laws. Quite enjoyable and interesting.
A doctor's estranged sister disappears while in Turkey. Julia's irritation turns to concern and she an her ex husband journey to Turkey to find Toni. They are faced with corruption, international intrigue and frustration. But will they find this troubled young woman before it's too late?
This was an enjoyable read. The plot is good. Could have lived without all the bickering between the spouses and the touristy gushing. But an interesting mystery with a satisfying ending.
I thought this book was good however final third a bit dull. I also found Julia a very annoying and unpleasant character. Having said that it is well written and I enjoyed reading about the different places described in the book. Would have given 4 if Julia had been more likeable.
A very gripping story which had me at the edge of my seat! I just couldn't put this book down until I finished and the clock showed 5am. At times the older sister's immaturity really annoyed me but that didn't take away from this adrenaline-inducing story. What a fantastic book!
Good story line and reading about govt secrecy and surprising ways the characters and their flaws and screwed up sense of what they felt was ok, kept me reading!
This is a story about a young woman who is touring Europe and finds herself in a predicament that she needs help to get out of after she disappears. This is my review and mine alone. Norma Gorrill
I did not like the main character and never felt connected to her. I felt as though I should have liked her but her behavior was rude and disrespectful towards others. To be fair, the story itself was decent, although I would not call this book a thriller.
I would recommend as a quick read with ends tied up pretty well. Some parts were slow, but I like the details as well. Will look up others by this author in the future.
So much detail you can almost picture it. This story was a fantastic read all the way through with believable characters. I just finished it and I already want to read it again! Deborah Rogers spun a fine tale with this book!
I had trouble staying with this book, the main character was hard to warm up to. She was mean and unforgiving and I don't know if that was resolved because after staying with it for so long it suddenly wrapped up and was over as if there was a deadline or that even the author was tired of it.
