Isabel Long #4

Killing the Story

Rate this book
An accidental death that was no accident…

For the record, Estelle Crane, the gutsy editor of The Observer newspaper, died after a hard fall on ice. But years later, her son discovers a cryptic note hinting her death might not have been an accident after all.

Was Estelle pursuing a big story that put her life in danger?

That’s what Isabel Long — along with her 93-year-old mother, Maria, her ‘Watson’ — agrees to investigate in Dillard, a town whose best days are in the past.

A former journalist, Isabel follows leads and interviews sources, new and familiar. She quickly finds a formidable threat in Police Chief James Hawthorne, who makes it clear Isabel is not welcome in his town — and who warns her against poking her nose into Estelle’s death.

Of course, that’s after Isabel has discovered the chief’s questionable policing and a troubled history with Estelle that goes way back.

Killing the story means dropping it because there aren’t enough facts to back it up. But Isabel won’t make that mistake. She’ll see this one through to the very end.

Can she uncover the plot that led to Estelle’s murder?

Satisfying
The saga of Private Investigator Isabel Long continues with old friends and new ones as Isabel solves her fourth case. Lots of loose ends to tie up in a story that highlights a small town newspaper - and small town life. I enjoyed it & and looking forward to the next case.

If there's one thing I like to do, it's discovering new authors. Joan Livingston is certainly a new author for me but having just enjoyed reading 'Killing The Story' as much as I did, I can guarantee that I will be reading more of her work in the future. I absolutely loved reading 'Killing The Story' but more about that in a bit.
I loved the character of Isabel Long and took to her from the start. It didn't take me long to consider Isabel and her adorable mother, Maria as being friends of mine. Isabel is a former journalist and she now works as a private investigator. Her former career certainly helps her with her new career- both jobs require Isabel to be inquisitive, diligent, tenacious, tough, determined and dedicated. Isabel has the knack of getting the information that others can only dream of. I love the close relationship and bond that Isabel shares with here mother, Maria. They are quite the double act. Both are strong and feisty women. I love the way in which Isabel and Maria are the female equivalent of Sherlock Holmes and Dr. Watson. Is there a case for Isabel and Maria to investigate? Do Isabel and Maria solve the case? Well for the answers to that question and so much more you are just going to have to read the book for yourselves to find out as I am not going to tell you.
This was one of those books that grabbed my attention from the start and to say that reading this story proved to be addictive is a huge understatement. I think part of my addiction to the story was down to the main characters of Isabel and Maria. I considered them to be friends and of course I had to know what happened to them. I felt compelled to read the book and I mean that in the nicest possible way. The pages turned quite quickly as I worked my way through the story. I was that focussed on the story that I lost all track of time and I managed to shut out all other distractions. I managed to binge read the book over the course of a single day which is really good for me.
'Killing The Story' is superbly written. This book is actually the fourth instalment of the Isabel Long mystery series. I was disappointed to reach the end of the story but I soon cheered up when I realised that I had another three books to catch up on. The author grabs your attention from the start and she draws you into the story. Once she has your attention she will not let you have it back until the moment you have read the last word on the last page. I found 'Killing The Story' to be a gripping read, with a plot that certainly kept me guessing and kept my interest throughout. I felt as though I was part of the story and that's down to Joan's superb storytelling.
In short, I thoroughly enjoyed reading 'Killing The Story' and I would definitely recommend this book to other readers. I will certainly be reading more of Joan's work in the future. The score on the Ginger Book Geek board is a very well deserved 5* out of 5*.

A Dead Editor
A Crooked Cop
What’s the Connection?

Isabel finds herself in danger again, but she will not stop searching or following leads until she is satisfied that she has done all she can for Emerson’s quest to find out the real story behind his mother’s death. Isabel will experience all kinds of characters to get to the bottom of the case, and her mother will be right there with her, maybe not always physically, but she is always asking Isabel for updates.

Killing The Story is fast paced and as all of Ms. Livingston’s books that I’ve read, full of great characters and a lot of danger and crazy situations. Isabel is always up for the adventures that she partakes in to find out the truth behind the cases she takes. She’s even up for the danger that always seems to find her. However, along with the danger comes the friendships, respect and support from the neighbors and community. This story was full of suspense, danger, and action. This case was a close to Isabel because Estelle Crane, Emerson’s mother, was a co-owner and operator of The Observer, and she was as tenacious, determined, and a reporter that didn’t have a problem reporting all of the news. Isabel is finding a kindred spirit with Estelle the more she delves into her death.

I love this story and the characters are always so interesting and entertaining. I love Isabel’s relationships that she makes and has with the towns folk as well as those that she ends up questioning. Ms. Livingston’s stories take place in Western Massachusetts and the description of the characters in the small townships around where Isabel lives as well as Conwell remind me of the small towns and countryside in Vermont. I love the Isabel Long stories. These stories always start off with suspense and adventures and this continues throughout the entire book. I give this story a 5-star review and look forward to more Isabel Long stories in the future.

Killing the Story is the fourth book in the Isabel Long Series, and like the previous three, this is a page-turning tale.

Isabel is still determined to get her licence as a private investigator and is taking on another case. This time it’s the son of a deceased small-town newspaper editor who is asking for Isabel’s help. His mother, Estelle Crane had died after a fall on the ice some years before, but recent discoveries have convinced him that Estelle’s death might not have been an accident.

Along with her mother, the redoubtable ninety-three year old Ma, Isabel is soon chasing down suspects and looking into the dodgy goings-on in the town of Dillard. Police Chief James Hawthorne warns our intrepid investigator off, but it will take more than an intimidating police officer to stop Isabel.

This was another great story from Joan Livingston. There are some great new characters and of course, some welcome old ones. The Old Farts are still a source of useful gossip and information on Isabel’s cases, and her romantic relationship with Jack, her boss, continues to progress. Packed with detailed descriptions of small-town life, plenty of humour, and suspenseful scenes, this was a story that held my attention all the way through. I’m looking forward to Isabel’s next adventure.

Killing The Story is #4 in the Isabel Long mystery series, but it can be read as a stand-alone too.

Private Investigator Isabel Long is investigating the death of Estelle, a newspaper editor. It may not have been an accident!

She begins looking in the events surrounding the death and ends up in danger herself…..

As ever, Isabel is dogged in her determination to find the truth, despite the threats…….she will not kill this story.

Isabel is a well developed and likeable character, strong and certainly determined. This is a twisty murder mystery and thoroughly entertaining.

Thank you to Rachel’s Random Resources for the opportunity to be part of this blog tour, for the promotional material and an eARC of Killing The Story. This is my honest and unbiased review.

I have enjoyed each of the novels by Joan Livingston that I have read and Killing the Story, the fourth in her Isabel Long series of crime mysteries is no exception.

The Blurb

Killing the Story is the fourth in the popular Isabel Long Mystery Series.

The Review

Although Killing the Story is the fourth book in Livingston’s series, each of the novels works perfectly well as a stand alone story.

This book starts with when Isabel encounters law enforcement officers from a neighbouring town. Her interest in them increases when the owner of the town’s newspaper, Emerson Crane, asks her to investigate his mother’s death. The death was classed as an accident, but the man doubts that.

Isabel takes on the case and the reader is soon engrossed in her life with her mother, Maria, her love, Jack and the ‘old farts’ she bounces ideas off in the back room of the local store.

I especially enjoyed this book because the reader is allowed to learn more about the depth of Isabel and Jack’s feelings for one another. The readers is also privy to more information about the ‘old farts’ and Maria’s love of diner food results in some amusing interludes.

Killing the Story is an excellent novels that drops subtle clues to the conclusion of Isabel’s investigations. Her assistance comes from an unexpected source and that results in a particularly satisfying ending to the story. As I have said, I enjoy all the novels by Joan Livingston the I have read, but Killing the Story is a particularly engrossing story. I thoroughly enjoyed it and highly recommend it.

The Author

Joan Livingston is the author of novels for adult and young readers. Chasing the Case, Redneck’s Revenge, Checking the Traps, and Killing the Story, published by Darkstroke Books, are the first four books in her Isabel Long Mystery Series, featuring a longtime journalist who becomes an amateur P.I. solving cold cases in rural New England.

She draws upon her own experience as a longtime journalist in Massachusetts and New Mexico to create Isabel Long, a sassy, savvy widow who uses the skills she acquired in the business to solve what appears to be impossible cases. She also relies on her deep knowledge of rural Western Massachusetts, where she lives, to create realistic characters and settings — from country bars (where Isabel works part-time) to a general store’s backroom where gossipy old men meet.

She credits her mother, Algerina — the inspiration for Maria, Isabel Long’s ‘Watson’ — for instilling in her a love of reading and the power of the written word.

Isabel Long is a former journalist who now works as a private investigator. Both jobs play to her strengths; she’s curious, tenacious, tough, and determined. This is the first of the series that I’ve read, but it worked fine as a stand alone. Isabel is hired to investigate the death of a local newspaper editor whose death was originally ruled an accident.

I liked Isabel. She’s older than most of the main characters in mysteries I read, especially the women. She’s probably in her late 60s, has silver hair, but she’s smart and funny and attractive. Her mom is her sidekick and the interactions between the two are well-done. They have a close relationship but they both realize the other is strong and smart and capable. Isabel doesn’t have to hide anything from her. Isabel has a boyfriend who manages to worry about her without being over-protective.

There are several reasons to believe that Estelle’s death was not an accident and a few suspects, including a maybe dirty cop. I thought the killer was a little obvious, but that didn’t hamper my enjoyment of the book. The small town felt real, with the people and their secrets and the everybody knows everybody else’s business.”

The story was told in the first person and well-written. The clues made sense and I liked how the loose ends were tied up at the end. My one gripe – and it really annoyed me – was how often the main character giggles. Grown women just don’t giggle that often. They laugh, cackle, snort, snicker, but they don’t giggle. Giggling should be reserved for teenage girls.

Even though this is the fourth book, in the Isabel Long Mystery series it's the first I've read, and there's sufficient backstory for this to read as a standalone. Isabel, a former journalist, specialises in solving cold cases, in the area of North Massachusetts where she lives. Her fourth case concerns a former Editor of a small-town paper.

The characters are quirky, and the small-town dynamic is believable. The plot has twists and false leads. The investigative team comprises Isabel and her mother, and these two give the story a unique perspective.

If you enjoy cosy and murder mystery this unusual, and original series should appeal to you.

I received a copy of this book from Darkstroke Books and the author in return for an honest review.

I really looked forward to reading Killing The Story, the fourth in Joan Livingston's Isabel Long Mystery Series as I loved the other books in the series. And this one was no exception.

It was a delight to meet up with Joan's well drawn characters again as well as meeting some new ones. I loved the way Isabel worked through her latest case and its very satisfying conclusion and I certainly enjoyed meeting up with the gorgeous Jack again.

Killing The Story is yet another really good read from a very skillful crime writer.

This is another great addition to the Isabel Long series, Isabel finds herself up against a formidable opponent when she looks into the death of a reporter. Her death had been considered an accident but now new evidence could prove to the contrary.

Was the victim onto a story that put her life in danger and ultimately led to her death?

I really enjoyed this instalment in the series and recommend going back to the beginning and reading the whole collection.

Another fun read!

You will recognize some of the characters to be like the acquaintances in your life. Even those “rough around the edges” have redeeming qualities! I love to pick out the killer by the author’s hints.
