Royally Screwed: A Tale of Two Princes

Rate this book
Take one betrothal gone awry…

Prince Angelo is destined to marry Prince Yuri. Never mind that Angelo isn’t gay and didn’t choose to be saddled with a moony-eyed princeling who is determined to ruin Angelo’s life. Then one day Yuri goes too far and Angelo has to take matters into his own hands.

Add one doomed arranged marriage…

Prince Yuri is destined forever to pine after Prince Angelo. Arranged marriages are archaic and awful enough without being stuck for life with someone you want who will never, ever in a million years want you back. Still, for someone who claims to want nothing to do with Yuri, Angelo is surprisingly possessive.

And you just might get one unexpected romance.

Two men, thrown together by fate and scheming parents, shouldn’t have a prayer of finding a happy ever after. But fate can be fickle, and love can exist where you never thought it could.

Royally Screwed is a 75,000-word M/M novel featuring royalty, a poorly-thought-out betrothal, one prince in need of a firm hand, a second prince who isn’t as straight as he always thought, drunken texting, bickering, practice kissing, odious British nobility, and falling in love despite all the reasons why you shouldn’t.

Both the book cover and the premise completely pulled me into reading this story.

Howeeeeeeever, I think I was a bit dick-mo-tized by the hot boy in the crown on the book jacket and compleeeeeeeetely missed the fact that this one contained BDSM. :- /

[My interpretation of 23 y.o. Angelo]

As anyone who follows my reviews knows, BDSM is about as far out of my wheel house as it gets; however, I actually didn't DNF the story, which is a feat in itself for me where "pain equals pleasure" stories are concerned.

Yes, I could have totalllllllly done without every single one of the many, many, MANY spanking scenes, but that aside, I did enjoy the story quite a bit, especially the ending.

In regards to other kinks, though, I was thrilled to see that they didn't venture at all beyond the spankings, and how the author skillfully avoided, and kind of made fun of, the dreaded "mangina" that could've easily reared its ugly, disturbing head.
I want you so badly, but I can’t imagine how or why you want me back.”

Angelo kissed the corners of Yuri’s eyes. “You’re beautiful. Have you seen yourself?”

Yuri pouted. “I’ve got no tits, a dick that’s hard to ignore, and my boy pussy is not self-lubricating.”

“Please don’t say boy pussy ever again.”
Thank you, Angelo!

The pacing was a bit slow for my tastes at times, but I did really enjoy the flashback scenes of the two boys growing up together.

As far as my overall enjoyment of the book, I'd rate it at around 3.5 stars, taking into account that I don't *personally* find someone repeatedly slapping my ass sexy, like, at all.

Because Oh. My. GOD! That shit HURTS!

DNF at 30%

I couldn't handle all the push and pull anymore.

There is pining, hurt feelings, denial about being gay (or bi), and sleeping with other people. And all of this for YEARS. This 'love story' starts when they are around 13 and I guess they will finally get together somewhere around age 25 to 30 since they have to be married before they turn 30.

I just wanted this to be more romantic I guess. Not Angelo being hostile to Yuri, proclaiming he is definitely not gay and him sleeping with all the girls.

And Yuri pining for Angelo, but giving up and finding some dominant man who ends up hurting him. And while this could have resulted in some lovely hurt/comfort, it ends with their parents telling them they should be apart for at least a year to stop all the crazy rumors about them.

This book was incredibly frustrating and it exhausted me to no end. I couldn't read any more.

4 stars ⭐️ After reading a few downfalls recently, I didn't expect this book to be a good one. But the story was beautiful, and I really enjoyed the premise of the book. I mean, I had a few niggles here and there (not a surprise when it comes to my case). But I could possibly ignore them since the book has ticked all my boxes.

I'm very picky with my BDSM reads, and this book was what I needed. I should say this is not a hardcore BDSM book, just mild BDSM with a lot of spanking and the right combination of possessiveness. 😉

I liked how Angelo called Yuri his princess. It was such a cute and loving nickname. And Yuri also called him Angel and my heart couldn't take it anymore. 😆

This is the first time I've read a book written by this author, and won't be my last. She can write! The story is beautifully written, and I'm in awe of it.

(Don't make the cover fool you. This is not a sweet/fluffy read as the cover is featured)

I find myself unable to write full reviews the last few books. I will possibly come back and do a longer one in the future. For now, I’ll just say that I liked this one but didn’t love it. The original spark between the guys was fun and I’m all for lots of spanking. 🔥I love books about royalty too. 👑 Yes please! Somewhere around the middle, I got bored. The ending was meh for me. You should take all of this with the tiniest grain of salt that you can find because every other reviewer loved it so far. Including a friend who I tend to agree with most of the time. Maybe I’m in a grumpy mood. 😡 So just ignore me. 🤷🏻‍♀️

Oh, I really loved this story and was completely captivated by Yuri and Angelo’s journey. Lynn Van Dorn has really crafted something so engaging here, I was caught up from the first pages. We follow these men over time, jumping into the story at various points in their lives until they are adults, and seeing how their relationship evolves. This is almost completely a character-driven story, and what makes it work so well is that Van Dorn made me completely believe in the bond between Angelo and Yuri. Despite their differences, despite the fact that Angelo is not interested in men, despite often driving each other crazy, these two are so intrinsically connected that they just belong to one another. From the time they were born, Yuri and Angelo knew they were meant for each other, regardless of what either may want. It put them at odds, but also made them a pair. Their early relationship reminded me a lot of siblings who fight and bicker among themselves, but are fiercely protective of each other when someone outside threatens one of them. We see that here so clearly as Yuri and Angelo will always put each other first, always reach for one another despite themselves, because they just belong to each other. I loved watching the story progress as we see them move from adversaries and slowly transform into reluctant friends, then lovers, then men who can’t imagine living without one another. It is so swoony and romantic and I found myself completely drawn into their story.

WARNING This book contains loads of spanking and despite featuring handsome princes and castles it is NOT a fairy tale romance full of flowers and sweetness. No. This is more like a spicy, bitter flavor with just a suggestion of sweetness.

I normally do prefer my romances to be more sugary sweet but this book very successfully hit a lot of my favorite tropes including childhood friends, hateship, and arranged marriage. I particularly loved the strings of possessiveness woven into the story. Lynn Van Dorn just does possessiveness so well. She simultaneously makes it feel like romantic fate and a hard-won love.

Prince Yuri and Prince Angelo have been promised to each other since birth. And Angelo HATES Yuri. He hates how pretty and perfect the little prince is and he hates that Yuri will be his husband no matter how Angelo fights it. Yuri is more than fine with the arrangement, but his happiness is continuously chipped away as Angelo's hate sinks in. Don't get me wrong, Yuri's character was very much a sassy little power bottom, but I just felt so sad for him being in unrequited love/lust for most of the book. Let it be said that spanking is not my kink, but I appreciated how it was an integral part of the relationship that played off each of their needs for dominance/submission. Angelo needed to feel some control in his life and Yuri needed to let go of the reins and just fall apart every now and then. While I did wish Yuri had some more flowery love thrown his way, I cannot deny that this was an awesome ride. The reader navigates through the twists and turns of a complicated relationship years in the making and then nosedives into a very exciting end.

I do hope we get an invitation to the Kingdom of Mirea again.
After all Yuri does have two brothers. 😉

My first read by this author and I have to say that I enjoyed it.

It was definitely interesting, as this was an alternate world where two made up countries exist, but also the rest of the world is the same as ours.

Prince Angelo is the second born child of the King & Queen of his country, his sister being older, and Prince Yuri is the third born child of the King & Queen of his country, and they are neighboring countries who have been in dispute for a long time. But a diplomatic marriage between the "spares" as it were, will work.

At first they think Yuri will be a girl, so they arrange a marriage between them, and when he turns out to be a boy, they still hold to it as Yuri's country allows gay marriage and such and there's royal politics with trades and such that go into it all.

So Angelo and Yuri are betrothed from birth. But Angelo, who is straight, is annoyed by Yuri and doesn't treat him well. Although Yuri is far from innocent as he pretends to be sweet but is actually pretty bratty and likes getting Angelo in trouble. But also, Yuri has a total crush on Angelo, and as they get older it only gets stronger. But Angelo doesn't want to with Yuri, he's straight, and for years Angelo is with girls and Yuri, who is gay, is with guys, trying to fill the void of not being able to be with Angelo.

The animosity between the two slowly lessons over the years as well, and they also

But as they get older, things start to change, and when one of Yuri's boyfriends goes way too far, Angelo steps in and then things really start to change.

It takes a long time, but these two eventually cross over into a very non platonic place. Angelo is not so straight, although his attraction for the same sex only seems to be for Yuri.

I enjoyed this novel. I enjoyed Angelo and Yuri together, although I wish the romance could have been played up a little more. Not that it wasn't there, but I would have liked to see a smoother transition, at least for Angelo, from not seeing Yuri in a romantic or sexual way into seeing him that way, into feeling that love for him. I feel that it could have been done a little better. Also, their .

Overall, a good first reading of this author for me and I liked them and I liked this. Definitely recommend!

I'm only giving this book three stars because it's Lynn Van Dorn and her writing is awesome... Even when it makes me depressed.

Don't get me wrong, this book has an HEA. But for about the first 40%, I was just twisted guts and sadness. I really wish it hadn't been so heartbreaking. I wish that when Yuri had said he'd wanted Angelo to be his first kiss, I hadn't wanted to weep uncontrollably.

But then, I had to put my 17-year-old cat down last week. I probably wasn't in the best frame of mind to read something with this much angst.

I really wanted to like this book, but the animosity just went on too long. Yuri was just depressed and crying constantly over his unrequited feelings, and I just found it depressing. Angelo just didn't couple around fast enough for me.

Angelo and Yuri

Prince Angelo is everything for Prince Yuri for so long only... Angelo is straight straight straight! Huh uhh!

Their parents decided from when they were born, Angelo and Yuri will marry.
Growing up together being each other’s pain in the arse wasn’t very promising for the future.
We can follow them for years and years. Somewhere on the road, Angelo found a way to discipline Yuri for his acts and Yuri yearns for more.
His feelings aren’t answered by Angelo for many years because duh he’s straight.
Also somewhere on that road, Angelo wants to take care of Yuri where Yuri fails to take care of himself.

“Yuri had long been a pain in Angelo's arse. He wasn't used to him being a pain in his chest, as well.”

A lot of sassy, hurt, horniness, confusion, sexiness, and love is passing by. When denial turns into admitting, there are more and more feelings involved.

What a smashing story, I loved every part of it. Awesomely written and all delicious.
The misinterpretation of each other body and facial language was well done. Also the expectations of what to others needed or thought and the realization that it’s all quite different, excellently done!
Even though i loved it all, I found it at times a tiny bit dragging, just a tiny!
This was quite an entertaining, sensual, very sexy story.

A case of arranged marriage, opposites attract royals with a nice bit of hurt/comfort and a hearty dose of snark. Royally Screwed is Lynn Van Dorn's spin on this trope. Ms. Van Dorn's skill at drawing characters, and finding ways for them to connect, is impressive. And I enjoyed the little bits of fairy-tale mingling with our real world issues. It's fun, and pretty light, and thoroughly diverting.

Audio performed by Michael Ferraiuolo who has his work cut out for him! With a huge cast of characters and a wide variety of accents and nationalities, Mr. Ferriauolo keeps up the super fast pace and makes the most of the humor in Royally Screwed.

an audiobook copy of Royally Screwed was provided to me for the purpose of my honest review

A mess from start to finish. I hated Angelo so much. The problems just keeps on coming. When will life give Yuri a break? Problems after problems; not even realistic. It is like the problems are there just for the story to move on. I cannnot believe this. And when they had their proper ending it was taken away quickly and the end was so rushed. The sex got kinda repetitive and boring. Yuri has been through a lot and he has been stereotyped as hell from being feminine, submissive, bottom, prim and proper, thin/lithe, blonde, lighter feature. I hate this type of m/m story so bad. It was like catered to heterosexual women (most m/m novels are that). All side characters aside from the bodyguards were annoying.

I did not enjoy this book. The MCs were unlikable, the constant misunderstandings and dramatics were unnecessary, the secondary characters we bleh (and wth was up with duke blackheath???!). maybe if Yuri didn’t talk so much i might have enjoyed this book a little bit (nah jk, it would have still sucked)
Honestly i’m proud of myself for reading till the end.

Price Angelo and Yuri have stolen my heart 💜
I’m so in love with them, their dynamic was a dysfunctional one, but it worked for them.
Their ache for one another was sweet torture, but also intertwined with sweet release.
We had an entertaining and sassy plot going on, we had a little action going on, great secondary characters, FIRE FIRE SCENES, and absolute sweetness!
Lynn takes us on another wonderful universe, there’s no book that she writes that I don’t absolutely love.
AMAZING!

Since I can’t do highlights yet cause it’s an ARC here they are:

Highlight(blue) - Location 17
Not that Angelo cared. He didn’t like golden highlights or blue eyes and he especially didn’t care for dairy products, as he was lactose intolerant.
Highlight(blue) - Location 47
He and Euripides, before their thirtieth birthdays, would wed, and that was the end of the matter as far as both sets of royal parents were concerned.
Highlight(blue) - Location 48
It was all very royal, really. Angelo would hardly be the first prince in history forced to marry for political reasons. Angelo just wished it didn't have to be with perfect little arse face Yuri.
Highlight(blue) - Location 55
Everyone in both Mirea and Tanzhir adored Prince Yuri. Everyone, that is, except the boy who would be stuck with him for life.
Highlight(blue) - Location 346
Even with shooting pains in his hand and wrist, Angelo already longed to do it again. I should buy a paddle, he thought, and knew that whatever battle he’d been fighting was over and he had decidedly lost.
Highlight(blue) - Location 361
Yuri was irritating and a thorn in Angelo's side, but he was also his.
Highlight(blue) - Location 1311
Once he married Angelo, however, that little buffer of fake normalcy would evaporate. Yuri would be stuck, forever, with a man he wanted but who didn’t want him back, and there would be no reprieve.
Highlight(blue) - Location 1410
Angelo kissed Yuri again, savoring the taste of his mouth and the silky feel of his lips and tongue, but mostly he reveled in Yuri’s silence. There was such a thing as talking too much.
Highlight(blue) - Location 1573
Yuri ran a hand through his clean hair and smelled Angelo’s shampoo. His heart lurched. He wished his hair was still long enough to bring to his nose and sniff it. And how stupidly pathetic was that, anyway? Sniffing his own hair to smell someone else’s shampoo. It was utterly moronic.
Highlight(blue) - Location 1947
Yuri and sweet shouldn’t have gone together in the slightest, despite what the adults had thought when they were children, but right now Yuri looked as if he was made entirely from candy floss and he was making Angelo’s mouth water.
Highlight(blue) - Location 2108
All he saw was Yuri, on his hands and knees, or Yuri on his back with his legs in the air; Yuri above him, Yuri below him, Yuri beside him. It was maddening.
Highlight(blue) - Location 2880
All that desire I saw pouring out of your eyes, even when we were too young for any of that.” He kissed the tip of Yuri’s nose. “I developed early,” Yuri said smugly.
Highlight(blue) - Location 3328
Even with no betrothal between us. You’re mine. Stupid schemes our parents hatched when we were infants don’t change that. Homicidal dickheads don’t change that. Biology and gender don’t get a say. You are who I want.” Angelo reached out for Yuri’s hand. “Prince or princess, I don’t care. I just want you.”

“Fine. We’ll do it. If great-grandfather Octavius could give up his home to shelter refugees fleeing the Nazis, I guess I can fly commercial.”

He wasn't gay or bisexual, however. It seemed to him that he was Yuri-sexual.

This was a fun read, but it did annoyed me on several points. With Angelo having been around Uri all his life and having a lot of fun at college with the girls, he suddenly is into Yuri? Because, after 23 years he realised Yuri was his fate, had been so since before his birth. Yuri was his and Yuri would always be his.

Apart from all the ping-ponging between being gay or not on Angelo's part and desperately wanting to be with Angel on Yuri part, is was an entertaining enough read.

3.5 stars for me, rounded up. This kinda read like a fairy tale to me...a kinky, snarky, gay fairy tale set in modern times that dealt with royalty and arranged marriages and royal lands that were made up, but where the rest of the world is ours.

Yuri and Angelo have been arranged to be married to each other by age 30 since they were both both. Their parents didn't know that Yuri was male until he was born, but they kept the arrangement in tact. Both boys grow up knowing that they are destined to wed, but both doing whatever they wanted in the mean time.

There was a LOT of push-pull between these two. Yuri knows early on he is gay, and despite how Angelo treats him, Yuri finds himself falling for his intended husband. But Angelo is very adamant that he is NOT gay and will sleep with as many women as possible before being forced to wed. However, despite all of this, the two engage in some kinky spanking and bit of mild BDSM play together. And when Yuri can't get what he wants with Angelo, he finds a horrible replacement.

The beginning was a bit difficult for me to get into, but I loved the middle chunk of the story where Angelo and Yuri are really falling for each other and Angelo is having to come to grips that he might not be as straight as he thought he was.

However, the last 15% also threw me off since it just got SO DRAMATIC so quickly! There was just all of a sudden so many things happening against Angelo and Yuri and it just felt like too much for the last 15% of the book. All these minor characters coming out and all the drama of the marriage arrangement coming to light suddenly. Had the family drama been for most of the book, maybe it would have flowed better for me, but after everything that they had been through with Yuri's ex, it almost felt....unncessary?

Lynn writes great characters, with great voices and snark and sass, and I loved Yuri and Angelo when they were together. I loved their texting when they were apart. But there were just a few things that didn't fully work for me to give this story 5 stars.

Looking forward to her next book as I just love her writing!

This would have been better if it hadn't leaned so hard into the GFY. Two stars may still be generous, though. Some of it was trashy hot in a good way, some of it was trashy hot in a bad way, but lots of the not hot parts just didn't make much sense logically.

It's not that I didn't enjoy this one, but somehow it managed to annoy me to no end.

I was SO excited to see a new release by Lynn Van Dorn, but barely a few chapters in, I realized it was going to be BDSM-themed. And while it's totally my fault for not checking the genres on Goodreads, I was so disappointed. As tropes go, bdsm is way on the bottom of the list for me.
(Why oh why some of my fave m/m authors write so much BDSM... Are they really into it, or is it just what sells?)
I especially disliked the emasculating "princess" nickname one of the MCs uses for the other. And I cringed at any and all mentions of "daddy", however brief.

Next problem I had with this is story, is as follows:
Even knowing sexuality is a spectrum and can be all kinds of crazy...
Even realizing this is a fantasy, and a common one at that...
Even loving the gay-for-you trope...
It was still a stretch for a supposedly totally straight MC going gay for just this one special unicorn of a person, and also only getting there in his mid 20s, having spent most of their life in close proximity.

Lastly, the unexpected political and familial drama in the last 10% of the story was unnecessary. Especially involving flat secondary characters that were barely involved in the story until that point. We had a fairly developed villain that could be perfectly utilized for a bit more drama, but wasn't even brought to justice for abuse and attempted murder.
What is up with that?

In conclusion, if you're into BDSM, and especially spanking - you might enjoy this book way better than I did. Be prepared for lots and lots of silly angst.

Royally Fabulous

Loved it! I adored Angelo and Yuri’s story. It was so wonderfully laid out as their relationship progressed throughout their life and betrothal. I was immediately drawn into their story and devoured it over the weekend. It evoked great emotion in me from laughter, some sadness, and sexy times that had me fanning myself. What I loved most was how Angelo’s sexual awakening was portrayed. It wasn’t overnight, or like a light switch, it was almost a conscious awakening. Angelo didn’t consider it a bi-awakening, but rather a Yuri-awakening as the only man he had eyes for was Yuri. It was such a natural take on coming to realize that love is not about parts, but the person behind the parts. It was lovely and organic, and not surprising coming from this author. Angelo and Yuri’s story was beautiful and sexy and I couldn’t recommend it more. 100 books in, Royally Screwed is definitely in my Top Five reads of the year so far.

DNF 10%

It's not fair to give this a 1-star rating (so I won't be) because the remaining 90% could be fantastic, but I was so grossed out by the first 10, that I'll never know.
I like kink in my romances but not undernegotiated BDSM between two 16yo kids, with the first encounter bordering on abuse.
I also don't like the starting point my romances being between small children but that's just my problem.
Add language that tries too hard to be funny and it means me requesting refund from Amazon for the first time in years.

"You got to go through hell before you get to heaven" that phrase fit perfectly with Yuri's situation!

2 stars because I need my Princes' story to be fluffy and sweet romance, without any abuse inside the story. I knew the trigger the author said but I think I can handle that but I'm so wrong!

This reminded me of Red, White, & Royal Blue with a hint of light BDSM! One of our characters here is a. It of a masochist and I love that Angelo calls him princess. I love that it is a true GFY/OFY romance. The snarky banter was great too. Truly a five star read in my opinion. I was never bored and loved every minute of it.

Lynn Van Dorn is a new author to me but I absolutely love the way this is written.
The story follows Yuri and Angello who have been betrothed since before birth and when Yuri is born a he, that doesn't change. The only problem is that Angel is straight, sorta.
We follow the princes as they grow up and there is a lot of hurt, heat and even love along the way. There are a number of steamy scenes, spanking and even more of poor Yuri struggling with his feelings. Yuri was my favourite without a doubt.
