🧙🏽♀️700BC, Britain. Battle with the Durotriges might have ended, but the peace is still a dream for the Dumnoni. After his failed suicide mission inside Duro's camp, Blydh survived a fractured skull but loses his mind. Day by day his volatile mood swings and confusion had increased and pushed him towards the brink of insanity. Wise woman Meliora was devastated and blamed herself for his condition. She did all she could to treat his mind but to no avail. When Blydh's raids into enemy territory risk their only chance to call a truce with the Duro, Meliora had to choose either to lose his beloved nephew forever or to go to Belgae land and perform a Ritual of Eternal Solace in their Stonehedge to free Blydh's mind from the evil's grasp. Can they rid him of his affliction and finally achieve a lasting peace?
🧙🏽♀️The book - 4th in the Tribes of Britain series - set during the Late Bronze Age follows the adventures of Meliora, the wise healer of the Dumnonii tribe through her own 1st person POV. In this book Meliora struggles to right Blydh's mind for which she blamed herself, to capture the true killer of Abba, and to secure a lasting peace with their neighboring Duro tribe.
🧙🏽♀️Like her last book, Sam maintains the same palpable tension, suspense, and thriller throughout the story. There is not a single moment where I feel bored. The story is spell-blindly built around the layered plot, and it runs at a break-neck pace. Each chapter ends with a cliffhanger and the enthralling narrative helps the readers to emotionally connect with the story.
🧙🏽♀️Sam beautifully brings the characters to life. Meliora's attempts to right Blydh mind after everything he did and accused her of is heartbreaking and the complete personality transformation of Blydh is absolutely commendable. Some new characters from the last book - the experienced sailor Renowden, priestess of Nine Maidens Endelyn, the new recruit Kewri, and the shield maiden Senara - played important role in the story and I liked their character developments.
🧙🏽♀️The ending was satisfactory. Finally, Abba's murder was avenged and his skull is intoned, but a new problem relating to Alchemy Clan is brewing on the horizon and I'm eager to read how everything will be wrapped up in the next book.
Overall, Pagan Rage is a wonderful read just like the last one. If you like historical fiction set in ancient times with strong female characters then this book is for you. Highly recommended.
Sam is an excellent writer love the Pagan Series, first time I have read Sam's books and books of this period but Sam brings the characters, and events to life well done. If you haven't read any of this series sign up to the newsletters and get reading
Endelyn moves to the Dumnonii camp and helps Meliora care for Blydh, who mistakes her for his dead lover. Blydh becomes obsessed with killing Brea and becomes more and more paranoid, thinking Meliora is conspiring with Brea to kill him. After Blydh steals her entire supply of morphine, Meliora travels to the Nine Standing Stones in Winterbourne with Kewri, Ren, Senara, Endelyn, and Sorcha. Despite being repeatedly warned to stay away from the stones themselves, Sorcha decides to pee on them, becomes cursed and dies.
Kewri accidentally lets Paega escape, chases after him, but doesn’t return for 2 days, so Meliora and Senara go after him. They finally find Kewri trapped in a bog and rescue him.
In an attempt to free Blydh from the demon, Meliora and company travel to Eastern England, home of the Belgae tribe and hot springs. The Belgae tribe refuse their request, so the Dumnonii sneak into the hot springs to perform a half-assed ritual. They only escape because Tallack kills the Chief’s son, Paxton, cutting him in half with an axe.
After returning to the settlement, Blydh goes into a rage and severely beats and rapes Endelyn. The tribe is horrified at his behavior and give Endelyn lavish gifts, elevating her status in the community.
Sendara and Meliora hatch a plan to make peace with the Durotriges, who hate Brea with a passion. When Blydh discovers their plan, he tries to kill Meliora, but Kewri rescues her by killing Blydh instead. This guy is such an asshole at this point, and so dangerous, the only thing to do is euthanize him.
Tallack parleys with Fane, the new Durotriges chief, who barters Brea for two Dumnonii warriors and a small fortune. Tallack’s mother, Cryda, decrees Brea will die by wolf pack. Everyone is like WTF? How are we going to do that? As usual, Tallack looks to Meliora for advice. Seriously, how is Meliora not the chief? She’s the only one with any common sense in this family. Anyway, the tribe eventually manages to capture some wolves and throw Brea into a pit with them, where the wolves enjoy their fine dinner.
The tribe travels to bury Aebba and Blydh, then to fulfill their bargain with the Durotrignes, rescuing the two warriors left behind as hostages.
