Rate this book
A real man.

FINALLY.

Chiseled eight pack? Yep, he's got it.
That shadow on a sharp jawline? Yep, two for two.
So charming you want to scream? Definitely.
Not all intimidated by my success? Check.
Pretty much perfect? Ooooh yeaaahhh.

All that man...just for me.

But I'm an investigative reporter for the biggest newspaper in the country, so it's my job to pick up on details, to see the signs that other people miss. I'm not afraid of danger. Not even afraid of dying.

And there's definitely something about this man that I'm missing...

I've got a caboose that doesn't quit, so I will get to the bottom of this.

Every man has two faces. I've seen one side...but what about the other?

Delicious!!!

🌶🌶🌶🌶/5 - This one is SO good! Obviously we’re not meeting billionaire men anytime soon but this one seems more realistic and likable!!!

Also - if you like pet names and anything set in NYC - this one’s for you!

Run of the mill

This is just a run of the mill romance. Really somewhat disappointing. I love the male lead, Dax. The female lead, Carson, tries to hard to project the tough chick vibe. There were sexytimez, but they were quite vanilla. Nothing compared to her other books. I will say this, though: she found herself an editor and a copy editor. The were only 2 or 3 typos in the entire book. That’s saying something compared to her others. I can say it’s not bad, but it’s not great either.

Just, no. Women like Carson do not exist and live like her.

I kept reading because I wanted to know what Dax was hiding. I was also intrigued by what he saw in her, because she was so full of herself, yet extremely friendly with other women. She could be nice when she wanted to be, yet she was so...unrealistic. And, moronic for holding something like wanting to hide his lifestyle and social status from her as a defense mechanism against him.

I didn't and don't like Carson. Boy Toys? Really? And, she numbered them. I get her feelings about monogamy and her bitter divorce, so she goes out to accumulate boy toys to pay her jerk of an ex back? Who is being punished by that behavior? Really? Don't get it, also don't have to like it. Two stars.

I didn't like it until I was 70% in. Now that it is over I want to know what happens, but I don't want to read the 2nd one.

I enjoyed reading this novel!

Carson is an independent woman who has walls up with men when it comes to relationships because a past relationship has left her shattered. She is a young journalist who is making her way to the top with some breaking news stories.

Dax is an adonis who seeks Carson out after overhearing how she talked to someone. She was a total ball-buster and she is gorgeous to top it off. While Dax appreciates Carson for the bluntness and the fact that she does not seem to know him. He also has major relationship issues, some that may even break how he and Carson may relate to each other in the future.

Reading how these two interact together was a delight, they seem perfect for each other. The chemistry between her and Dax was smoking both in and out of bed.

This book ends on a cliffhanger, leaving Carson to question if she really knows Dax. I really would like things to work for them. I can't wait to read book 2.

Reasons I enjoyed this book:
Action-packed, Easy-to-read, Page-turner, Steamy, Unpredictable, Wonderful characters

I received an e-copy of this from the publisher but I am not under obligation to review.

I really tried to like this book after reading the The Doctor series - which was okay.
But so far this first book in this series is turning me off.
Clearly, this author - E.L. Todd is a male trying to write in a female voice but hasn't done it well.
So far, I don't like any of the characters in this book - especially the heroine "Carson".
Not much was described about the hero (Dax) to make any opinions yet - other than the character seems harmless. Maybe the next book will have more details.
The heroine (Carson) is supposedly a cross between cold Ziva David with mad skills from NCIS and party girl Sam Jones from Sex and the City. Unfortunately, the two portrayal didn't quite come together in such a short novel. If anything the Carson character seems over-inflated in my opinion. Talking about disarming Iraqi insurgents by herself --- really now!

It’s been a while since i’ve read something by EL Todd and it’s an interesting re-introduction into a series. The story itself has a lot of legs, but i’ll be honest, the way that the characters talk don’t really match their pedigree and the image that we get through the descriptions.

We start off from Carson’s point of view. She’s a Harvard educated journalist who’s worked her way up in The New York Press to get the good stories to write – the ones that are dangerous, that require a specific touch and an angle. She’s put herself in danger time and time again, and honestly, it’s what she needs since her personal life imploded. We learn that she was married and that her husband cheated on her, and as a result, she’s got thicker walls up than most people. She refuses to get close to anyone, and instead has her ‘Boy Toys’ . It’s one night, in a bar, when she’s working on a story that her life changes.

Enter Dax – a sexy as all heck man, who exudes power even in his t-shirt and jeans. He recognizes Carson’s fire, just by overhearing a conversation and decides that he wants to know more. While he accepts the sex only nature of a relationship, we realize quickly that he’s a good guy and maybe wants more.

We spend the bulk of this story watching them dance around the idea of being something more. Being something real. Both are hot off divorces with spouses who burned them pretty badly. They aren’t willing to trust easily, but they both realize that there’s more than just a physical connection.

The Dax we know is a guy who seems to make ends meet, he says he’s in finance and he’s able to afford nice things, yet his apartment is sparse. Carson lives with a co-worker and doesn’t really splurge on things, and doesn’t care about materials or wealth. As a journalist though, her spidey sense peaks when she feels like something is off with Dax but she decides not to investigate him because that’s not what a relationship is about. That comes to bite her in the butt, when she learns who he is and what that means to her.

It’s a shallow level introduction to the series, where we don’t know what the outcome will be since there are so many implications both personally and professionally, but we know that Dax seems to have ingratiated himself into the life of Carson and her friends that i’m sure it’s not the last of him. On top of that story line though, we do get what our author is known for, some of the steamiest scenes that are hot and descriptive and make you wonder what you’re doing wrong in your own life to not find a partner as open, wld and sexy as these two. I guess this means that we’ll have to go and pick up book two and see what comes next

It took me a while to get into this one. Felt my eyes glazed early on as I wondered if we were getting a billionaire romance, mob romance or both. I still don't know.

There was a clinical detachment throughout this novel which carried until the end for some characters. Dax is one. I am uncertain of his relationship with everyone because it seems that the man is connected to nothing and no one.

Carson on the other hand was a rocket! A fiery force to be reckoned with. She was unapologetically her and you had no reason to question her confidence and no nonsense attitude. She never played games. Just spoke her mind, circumstances be damned.

Though not a prerequisite, I always appreciate a novel that allows me to love the lead characters as a couple and individuals. That was the case with all these characters. I love what every one brought to the story and nothing is funnier than when they are all chilling in a bar or watching a game.

We get to know more about Dax towards the end of this novel and it made me feel like I don't even know the broody man who demanded respect and a chance to prove himself. I looked forward to him through the eyes of the other characters but then every POV in this novel pales to Carson's.

Speaking of which, I am not certain why we get scenes from Charlie's POV but I believe it should all reveal itself in time.

There is a truckload of sex in this novel. Nothing too overbearing with extended foreplay. These two just get to the deed. There were hot moments but then it just seemed commonplace like how you would greet your husband after a long day of work - a blowjob.

Friendship, sex and trust. There isn't even any love. Todd is building the base of an interesting but unlikely group of friends and I can't wait to dive into book two.

Fantastic... I couldn’t put down! Elizabeth @ Carolina Chic’s Read

Let’s start with Carson... this girl is one tough as nails chic. She is devoted to her job and her friends. She never pests a man in... not all the way. She gets what she needs from every man she has been involved with. She is totally up front about it and owns it. I really loved her character.. it was refreshing for the woman to be the Badass!

Dax is a man that does not want any commitment. He has been burned and is totally honest about it. Dax chooses to hide who he really is to Carson. What happens is a series of lies that cascade into a person that Carson cannot trust. Dax has only shown her his best sides... Carson feels she should have known everything.

Carson and Dax... these two are so completely perfect for each other. They are so in sync in and out the bedroom. The bedroom scenes are some of the best I have ever read.

So now she is questioning if she really knew him at all!

it's not bad but it's written so so simply and the fmc is so annoying. she's written off to be this bad-ass cool girl who wants flings but she just seems rude, bitchy, annoying and really pick-me. she finds the mmc, asks for his number then proceeds to make his contact boy toy #2. excuse me? i was cringing so hard at so many things she did.

also her body is mentioned multiple times. especially the fact she has big tits but a slim waist. multiple times. and i feel like it first got mentioned by her best friend and roomate (Who is a male but apparently all feelings are platonic). the fact it was mentioned by her best friend felt so freaking forced because i feel like the author was trying to comment on her body but not through the mmc because that would make people raise an eyebrow over him commenting on her body. even though he does. quite a bit later on.

it's so basic but im going to read book 2 because i want to see what happens. SHES MAD FOR THE DUMBEST REASONS EVERRRRR.

Carson is an independent woman and I love that about her. She is a writer and she goes after stories and will travel around the world for it. For me this is rare for a female lead, it always seems the man is the one traveling for work, etc.... She meets Dax and there is instant sparks. And yet, something was off.....and of course we didn't figure anything out until the very end, but it is a duet so what would we expect.

Dax seems carefree and fun and we don't get much of his side of the story until the end. SO we find out a little about him, but I can't wait to find out more.

We also hear from Charlie, Carson's best friend and roommate, so it is nice to see Carson and Dax through another set of eyes. It really helps you understand Carson a little better as well. Overall, a good book, but not my favorite by this author.

The blurb, intriguing.
The storyline, captivating and mysterious.
I was on the edge of my seat waiting for the twist.

Carson is a strong, independent, badass who isn't afraid to ask the tough questions to get the answers she needs. That's what got the attention of the hot but mysterious Dax.
Dax is drawn to Carson after seeing how she dealt with the sleazebag in the bar. He likes her blunt, no nonsense attitude. He doesn't want commitment but he wants more than just random hook ups.

Their chemistry is fire in private and also in public. They could be perfect for each other. But this cliffhanger ending - which leaves Carson wondering if she truly knows who Dax is - could break the perfect they could have.
I'm now waiting for The Man I Thought I Loved releasing in just a few days to see where E.L. Todd takes this story.

Confounded

The characters are both coming from broken trust in former relationships and react differently. Dax is weaving a tangled web trying to deceive new friends that he is just a regular joe. His character is more understandable. Carson on the other hand is in need of counseling , therapy or both. I did not like her mouth, her risky lifestyle or the way she laid up with men as long as they were hot and used a condom. Neither character knew anything about the other. The only thing they had in common was sex. Boring. My definition of a boy toy is a relationship between a young man and an older powerful woman so use of term in story was confusing.
Do not like cliffhangers so will not read more. Story does not garner that much of my interest.

I was like Carson, the heroine in this story. I knew something was up with Dax, the Hero, when he first took her to his apartment that was basically empty. I kind of figured it out, but wasn’t quite sure. I was on the edge of my seat waiting for the ball to drop and bam! I enjoyed how Carson and Dax grew in their relationship. I loved that he never gave up on Carson because he knew she was hurt before. But I couldn’t believe that he lied to her that long knowing how she felt. I can’t wait for The Man I Thought I Loved. Dax is going to have one heck of a time winning Carson back. Will she open her heart again? And yes, these two are smoking together.

Definitely a page turner.

This is the story of Dax & Carson. Dax is a businessman. Carson is a journalist for a big and popular newspaper. She is an independent woman. This is a story of deceit on Dax's part, but for a good reason. They both have their walls up because of past relationships. They both struggle with trust big time. It's a very steamy story, too. It's very well written, when you really don't have a clue to where the book's title leads you to in the story. Dax & Carson both go through trials and tribulations. It's a an excellent story line and an excellent book. I can't wait to see what happens in Book 2.

This book is great! I love that the story works around a group of close knit friends and you get glimpses into their lives along with the main characters of Dax and Carson. These two have intense chemistry! They have pasts that are still effecting them now. Can they have more than lust filled trysts? Can they open up their hearts to each other? Are they willing to risk it all to have a real relationship founded by trust and love? No spoilers here! Get this book and find out the answers. This is a must have book!

I loved this book!! I loved the dynamic between Carson and Dax as well as all of her friends! I literally had no clue what direction this story was going in and I think that’s why I loved it so much! I felt like something was off with Dax when he was vague about his job when Carson kept trying to get answers. I love they Carson is a strong independent woman but at points it was a bit much. Like she was on a high horse! I luke they Dax made her realize how she was acting! I was completely shocked by the ending and can’t wait for the next book!!

Omg...I love her stories! Both Carson and Dax were broken by their previous relationships. I freaking adore Carson! She has this hard shell to protect herself and is an all around badass. So sassy and competitive. A strong heroine who can be an asshole at times. Dax is protective, confident and definitely capable of getting past Carson’s walls. I was so intrigued by the mystery surrounding him and the storyline was addictive. Can’t wait for the next book because I’m really invested in where this plot is headed to next!

4.5 ⭐️. I loved it, I don’t believe I’ve read anything by E.L. Todd before and I’m ashamed to say it.

With that said, I very much enjoyed the multi character point of view it really helped tie the story together. I like that Carson was a strong woman but I think at times is worked against her. Charlie the best friend who wasn’t afraid to tell Carson when she was wrong made her character a bit more bearable. Now for Dax- I loved him from the start, he was hot and a gentleman, too good to be true right?!?!

Cliffhanger ending has me quickly moving on to book 2.

Emotional Damage

I've read this authors Doctor series and loved it. So when I seen this I wanted to give it a go.

So many things bothered me throughout the book. Alot of phrases were repeated and at times the story read choppy. But what bothered me the most was the disconnection of the female MC. It put up this wall of getting too attached to the characters. It took a majority of the book for me to actually connect with the characters. I think the book could have been much shorter. I will be picking up the second because I want to know what's next.

When you read a EL Todd book you exactly what you are going to get. A group of friends with their own internal issue and within that group get get a spoiled, strong woman that gets in her own way. This book is no different! Although it is definitely a good read and will draw you in, because hey...it EL Todd 😉, just don’t expect anything different. That’s the only reason I gave it 4 stars instead of 5. This book was everything I expected it to be.

Love that Carson stands on her own and isn't afraid except to give her heart again. It is good to see a man that enjoys her sass and her career and pushed her to let go again. Even though it was obvious that Carson would find out the truth about Dax, it wasn't how I thought it would happen. Ready to see if they can work it out and get over both of their pain from their past marriages. Can't wait for book 2 to come out!

I really enjoyed this book even though it was your typical run of mill story. I really liked Dax not really sure how I feel about Carson she try really hard to portrayed herself as this tough alpha chick but she really wasn't. Still I'm really eager to see what else is in store for this series. As always my review are totally voluntarily and no monetary compensation was received the opinion I have expressed are my own.

The Man I Thought I Knew is the first book in the Two-Faced duet by EL Todd.

Carson, is an investigative reporter and while working a story meets Dax. There is something about Dax that catches her eye, but there more to him that she knows. What secrets is he keeping?

There was a strong chemistry between the two and I couldn’t put it down. Great supporting characters and plenty of twists along the way.

Well, Dax is a major jerk! Even if he is HOT! I can see what he was trying to do, but when he started having feelings for Carson then he should have had the guts to tell her the truth. But also Carson should have followed her instincts and confronted Dax about his lying.
Dang it thou, I'm hooked on this series....lol. Come on with the next book already...lol. I love this author just as much as I do my other authors. Definitely a keeper.

This was a bit slow to start off with Carson who is an investigative reporter for the NY press.
She has been hurt and just hooks up with guys, but Dax comes along and can he break these walls down.
But Dax has his own issues and like Carson it’s who can be honest with each other and allow the other to trust.
After a couple of chapters in I was hooked and couldn’t put the book down. Can’t wait for the next instalment.

Explosive

Dax and Carson's relationship started out all wrong from the beginning. Each hiding and using sex to hide the pain. Each one hiding truths from the other. I was surprised that Carson as an investigative reporter wouldn't have at least asked Dax for a last name of researched him at least after things were getting serious. For a smart woman she wasn't that smart. Dax wasn't too smart either to think he wouldn't be caught. Karma!
