Energizing the debate on how best to expose and deal with Russian propaganda and disinformation, Thomas Kent goes beyond suggesting simple defensive measures. Kent not only calls for more government and private aid to expose Russian operations, but also describes how new, aggressive messaging campaigns against Russian disinformation could be run, the ethical questions involved, and the pros and cons of the West engaging in covert strategies.
This book takes a sophisticated look at the interaction of cyber-attacks and international politics. Kent (an old friend) understands how media influences populations both in and outside the U.S. He headed Radio Free Europe and worked in Russia and the US for AP. His examination of the myriad state sponsored and independent digital journalism outlets suggests ways that Western governments can aid the course of free speech without engaging in counter-productive propaganda and misinformation efforts themselves. There are a lot of inspiring independent online journalists and organizations in Eastern Europe and elsewhere in the world that are combating state-backed misinformation.
An outstanding book. Great overview of the various governmental and non-governmental organizations who are working to counter dis and misinformation. I highly recommend this for any concerned citizen who wishes to participate in fighting disinformation. This book gives you the information on how to volunteer.
This was a good read, with well considered recommendations by the author, about responding to hostile information operations (disinformation, cyber attacks, etc), specifically for western democracies.
