Saddled with Murder

Rate this book
Veterinarian and amateur sleuth Kate Turner has her hands full trying to juggle two boyfriends, a thriving practice, and a criminal investigation

It's the Christmas season and veterinarian Kate Turner is not feeling very jolly. She's overworked, unappreciated, and dealing with two dissatisfied clients. Throw in a very complicated personal life and Kate's definitely got a case of the holiday blues.

To make matters worse, Kate's ex-boyfriend, Jeremy, is mugged and robbed after they have a heated argument in the hospital parking lot. Then, two of her dissatisfied clients turn up dead (which really gets Kate's tinsel in a tangle). All of these events seem like coincidences, but they add up to something much more venomous.

Saddled with Murder is a cozy holiday mystery from beloved author Eileen Brady that explores the fragility and resiliency of animals and humans whose trust has been broken, and will keep animal-loving readers riveted until the last page.

Dollycas’s Thoughts

Doctor of Veterinary Medicine, Kate Turner has taken a temporary job filling in for another vet for a year. At the staff Christmas party, a wishing game goes awry and a video of it goes viral. Very relevant when bodies start to pile up. All of the victims have a connection to Kate. To save her own hide she starts to do a little sleuthing of her own. Sleuthing that could have her crossing paths with the killer.

As I opened this book on my Kindle there was a note to readers that for me gave too much detail of the upcoming story and explained this is a continuation of the author’s Kate Turner, DVM Mysteries and that the protagonist was “pivoting in a new direction. I am usually a stickler for reading series in order, but I plunged ahead. The author does provide some background but I was still wishing I had read the previous books first so I would have met Kate from the start. She is a strong character with a tragic past and I really wanted to know her better.

There is a great supporting cast of characters. The staff at the clinic, their clients, and residents of Oak Falls. I assume many were in the earlier books which explains their interactions and development. It warmed my heart to see how caring the staff was not only with the pets but their owners too. The relationship Kate has with her grandfather was heartwarming as well.

The story is very well-written and twists many subplots together with a very captivating mystery. The whodunit had me stumped almost to the end. I was pleased that I was at least on the right track.

Ms. Brady has a very comfortable writing style. I do love the veterinary theme. It is very easy to see that the author draws on her own life as a vet and her love of animals of all sizes. I love that a rescued Mustang was part of the story.

Saddled with Murder was a very entertaining escape. I am looking forward to the next book in this series for Kate’s new direction. I would like to go back and read the previous stories but if I don’t get the chance I am confident the author will continue to give me the info I need to get to know all the character’s histories.

This was an entertaining start to a new series. I love the Vet. theme coming from a Vet. family.

Dr. Kate isn't big on the holidays. Especially with her mom being gone and her dad remarried with a new family. So she tends to throw herself into her work, but when coworkers have a holiday party she tries to be a good sport and play along with a wishing game. But when she wishes two difficult clients would disappear and another is added to the list with it all on video. It soon goes viral when they start turning up dead one by one.

I received an eARC by the publisher through NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.

Mood/Seasonal Reading: Christmas but not a ton of holiday spirit

I wanted to like this as it combines my favourite things: animals and Christmas. Sadly, I think it suffered from too much of a good thing. It just contained far too many plot lines, too many characters, too many suspects, too many red herrings etc. I found it hard to keep up with as my attention constantly drifted. The mystery got off to bang quickly but just became too convoluted to enjoy. This also meant the final reveal was lacklustre as we spent very little time being able to understand the motive (which was weak at best).

I am also just learning this is a spin off series which makes a lot of sense considering there were times I felt dropped into the story as if I was missing something.

I will pick up another in this series as I really loved the vet aspect. I hope the next book is tightened up a bit as there is potential for a strong cozy here.

Review:

The characters are well rounded and well developed. Kate and her coworkers get along well, and at times they feel more like family than coworkers. At the Christmas party, they play a game of what they would wish for if they could have their wishes come true. Kate wishes two of her difficult clients would disappear, and when they are killed, they do disappear. When a third person is killed, it becomes more than Kate’s wish coming true, it becomes a murder investigation.

The author is very talented in her descriptive writing and the descriptions pulled me into the story from the very beginning. I enjoyed reading about all the animals that Kate took care of, it made for some interesting reading. The writing style flows smoothly and the book was a quick easy read, The mystery was well plotted and there were plenty of clues to sift through and suspects to consider. The culprit was on my radar but I did not not no for sure until it was revealed at the end.

I would recommend this book to anyone who enjoys a well crafted cozy mystery. I really enjoyed this book and am looking forward to reading more in the series.

I voluntarily reviewed an ARC of this book provided by the publisher, Poisoned Pen Press, and NetGalley, which I greatly appreciate.

Saddled with Murder by Eileen Brady is the beginning of A Dr. Kate Vet Mysteries. However, I discovered it is a spin-off of Kate Turner DVM Mysteries (no clue why the change). Dr. Kate Turner has taken a yearlong assignment in Oak Falls, New York. This job gets her away from her cheating ex-boyfriend, Jeremy which she appreciates, but she does not like the distance from her grandfather. I thought Saddled with Murder was easy to read. I like the authors conversational writing style. There are a variety of secondary characters from Kate’s co-workers, clients, and townspeople like Pinky. I like the clinic staff and how they deal with their animal clientele. I would take my fur babies to this clinic. Kate makes a reckless (and naughty) wish at the clinic’s employee Christmas party that she regrets the moment she does it. She had no idea that Mari recorded the event and accidentally uploaded it with the video of the litterbox cake she created. When the two malcontented clients Kate wished would disappear die unexpectedly, Kate is a little suspicious. At first blush, the cases do not appear to be the cause of foul play. But then the Christmas cards arrive stating that her wish had come true. The video goes viral and people begin to wonder if Kate is a witch. Kate has no choice but to investigate so she can clear her name. There are a couple of suspects including a glaring red herring. I found it a cinch to solve the whodunit, but I have been reading cozy mysteries for over twenty years. Kate is also dealing with a long-distance boyfriend, an ex-boyfriend who wants her back, and her father who would like to reunite. It is a difficult holiday season for Kate Turner, but she is fortunate to have good friends and her Gramps. I enjoyed reading Saddle with Murder and I look forward to the next A Dr. Kate Vet Mystery. Saddled with Murder has discontented customers, wacky wishes, a viral video, a bothersome ex-beau, long distance afflictions, the holiday ho-hums, and good-hearted Gramps.

This book was a nice change of pace from the typical cozy by featuring a vet tech as the main character. I also liked that i was unable to guess the culprit!

In Saddled with Murder by Eileen Brady Dr. Kate Turner has her hands full. She has taken on a one-year job commitment working at the Oak Falls Animal Hospital while the current veterinarian takes a year long vacation traveling the world. Her days are full dealing with in house appointments as well as doing house calls. She is also in the process of trying to figure out her personal life.....her father, who she hasn't spoken to in years has asked her and her grandfather to his house for Christmas and she might have two boyfriends. Good thing her year long job commitment provided an apartment above the garage at the animal hospital.

While the staff is enjoying an early Christmas celebration, Kate is video recorded as making a Christmas wish....wishing two unhappy clients would go away. This recording which clearly shows Kate wishing this and another employee, Mari, providing the names of the clients and Pinky, the grounds keeper for the hospital adding a name of his own goes viral. And when these people turn up dead, the suspect list is longer than Santa's naughty list. Lucky for Kate one of her relationship interests, Luke, is a police officer taking time out to attend law school so they decide to put their heads together and look into these deaths. Unfortunately when Kate's other love interest, Jeremy, is mugged, she is put in a very awkward situation.

Readers will love how the balance in Saddled with Murder devotes time for Kate's personal and professional lives and allows her to overthink the Christmas wish and what happened after...... Kate cannot stop looking at the number of views and reading the comments. Readers will love the relationships she has with her co-workers and Luke and Jeremy. Readers may end up leaning more towards Luke over Jeremy for obvious reasons....which I won't indulge here. You will have to read it and decide for yourself....even though Kate will be the one making that decision, or rather Brady will.

If you are an animal lover, murder mystery lover with a hint of romance Saddle with Murder is the perfect fit for you !! I highly recommend obtaining your copy and getting lost in the story......

I was so hopeful when I found this book. It sounded like a perfect match for me, but it turned out not really working for me. My interest went up and down like a yo-yo and I started looking forward to the process of picking a new book long before this one was finished.

Unsure if I'll return to this series. It had potential, but it felt too long and at times it dragged. Might shape up in book 2 though. Time will tell, I guess.

UPDATE: Reworking of Muzzle - Kate Turner DMV.

I love animals so this was right up my alley. I am not in the vet medical field so I don't know how accurate it was but it sounded very accurate with medical terms used, which I appreciate.
This didn't feel like book one though, sometimes I felt like I was missing the backstory - hello there are just two men in her life and where did they come from. We do get an explanation eventually, so it's a unique structure to not get it in advance.
The mystery kept me guessing with a lot of possibilities. I wasn't sure if we were getting a bit of mysticism but it all works itself out. Plan to read the next one immediately.

It's the first book I read by this author and won't surely be the last.
I loved this highly entertaining and engrossing cozy mystery.
The quirky cast of characters is well thought, the setting interesting and the solid mystery kept me guessing.
It's highly recommended.
Many thanks to the publisher and Netgalley for this ARC, all opinions are mine

This was bad. Writing was barely above competent. The characters were boring, the murder(s) were stupid and it was WAY too long. Also WTF is up with two different series by the same author with the same characters? I hate this book too much to figure it out.

Not even the inclusion of a horse in the story could redeem it.

Dr. Kate Turner is a veterinarian who is working on a one-year contract for a vet who decided to take a year off. She's been settling into her new position nicely, but now it's the Christmas season, which has always been difficult for her due to a very personal tragedy. When one of her employees asks everyone to make a selfish Christmas wish, she reluctantly joins in, not realizing that her 'wish' to make a couple of her patients' owners 'disappear.' When the video starts to go viral, it seems that her wish is coming true, and now she's in the middle of a murder investigation.

But when she has an argument with her ex-boyfriend Jeremy in the parking lot of the hospital, he's soon attacked and she wonders if someone is stalking her. But with a new maybe-boyfriend hovering occasionally, and suspects nearby, Kate starts to think someone specific was targeted and she's just the cover for it all...

This is listed as the first in a new series, but looking at the author's website, I discovered that this is listed as book 5 of the series, so now I'm wondering if I need to go back and start at the beginning to get the entire picture of Kate Turner, DVM. Hmmm...

Saying that, I liked the fact that the author is a true DVM, and her knowledge is extensive. While others might not find it interesting, as a pet owner, I certainly do. People like myself consider our pets as part of the family, and care for them in the same manner (FYI, my cats are indoor cats; I would never consider allowing them outside, especially in the area where I live. Just sayin').

Anyway, I enjoyed this book for the most part. There was enough going on to keep me interested throughout, and honestly, I liked Jeremy more than Luke. But not having read the other books, perhaps there's something I'm missing about the man's personality.

The mystery was well-drawn, and gave us enough suspects to chew on. It also handed us plenty of red herrings, and there were a couple of times I thought I knew who the killer might be (not the obvious person, of course), I had to change my opinion as I got closer to the end -- which is how it should be. When it all came together, it was rather sad how one person can treat another (in the situation that is, and I won't give it away here). The book also shows us how social media can influence and sometimes hinder our lives.

But I will say that I was a bit disappointed in the end. I absolutely detest cliffhangers - I call it holding the reader hostage - because you are obligated to pick up the next book to find out what happens. Forcing the reader to purchase another, not by choice. Don't get me wrong; the murder is solved admirably and everything is wrapped up nicely, but there are loose ends that I was looking forward to finding out the answers, and they never were. It's irritating. But, because the book was written well, and the characters authentic, I give this four stars. Recommended.

Vet Kate Turner is filling in for another veterinarian on a year-long vacation. It's almost Christmas and the Christmas party complete with litter box cake should be fun for everyone. But when someone makes a video of the party goers making Selfish Christmas Wishes, things take a turn for the murderous. Kate makes a wish that some of her troublesome patient's owners would disappear never thinking that someone would make her wish come true.

The first death is Frank Martingale. He was contentious and always had a bunch of nuisance suits going. He is disputing the vet bill and threatening to take Kate to court. The second death is Eloise who is threatening to sue Kate because her bulldog didn't have the puppies she wanted her to have. The third is Raeleen who once worked for the vet office Kate is now running and who blames Kate for her firing.

All three were mentioned in the infamous video which was accidentally posted on line and is now in danger of going viral.

The first two deaths could have been accidents but Raeleen was shot to death. There are many suspects including Kate and the local snowplow driver Pinky who is Kate's next door neighbor and the owner of Princess - a senior dog and the love of Pinky's life. Pinky has some social anxiety and is otherwise a little strange. At first, Kate suspects him since he plowed the first two victims' driveways and actually discovered the second body. But there are other suspects including the on-again, off-again boyfriend of the third victim and anyone who had a grudge against Frank.

Kate also has other issues to deal with. She has a couple of boyfriends and their relationships weren't trouble-free. She is also being encouraged by her Gramps to finally make it up with her father who sort of abandoned her when her mother and brother died in a car accident near the Christmas holiday some years earlier. Her father has built a new life with a new wife and two more children and Kate still blames him for moving on so fast.

The mystery was nicely twisty and the characters were engaging. I liked the details about the life of a vet. This is the fifth Kate Turner mystery and stands alone quite well. I haven't read the earlier books yet and had no problems getting into the story.

4.5 stars

This is the 1st book in the Dr. Kate Vet mysteries, but I do remember a book that came before this but I am not sure of the name. There are four books in a Kate Turner, DMV series she has listed on Goodreads that seem to go along with this book.

It is nearing Christmas and Kate Turner makes a big mistake, she reveals the names of two clients she wished would disappear. And within a few days, both of these people are dead and Kate is put in the crosshairs when a video taken at the event where she made the wish was uploaded to the internet.

I thought this was a great book but I wish there had been a bit more background about both of her previous boyfriends. Since this is being touted as “book one,” I think there should be a bit more of the backstory of the characters revealed. But that is just a small niggle. This is the sort of book that makes you yearn for the next book in the series and hope it comes out soon. Definitely liking the direction this series is going and can’t wait for more. Great characters and setting will keep everyone coming back for more, I’m sure.

If you like cozy mysteries, definitely check this one out. You won’t be disappointed.

I received this as an ARC (Advanced Reader Copy) in return for an honest review. I thank NetGalley, the publisher and the author for allowing me to read this title.

I saw this book was the first in a ‘new’ series and looked no further than that, but I should have. This character appears in other series’ based on the location. Although the characters were well rounded, and we got a lot of the backstory, it still felt like I was dropping in unannounced to a place I was not expected to be in. There was so much some of the characters had previously experienced that it was a little off-putting. Now that I got that off my chest, I will move on to this specific story.

The plot is quite simple, in a party mood, our leading lady veterinarian Dr Kate wishes that two of her annoying patients ‘go away’. What follows is beyond anything she could have imagined! There is not much active investigation being carried out despite all their actions carrying the weight of a search. The characters’ lives, the interactions between various townspeople (both important and unimportant) form the bulk of the narrative. The suspicions keep shifting through the different stages of the story, which keeps everyone on their toes, including me. I liked the resolution and the mystery itself, but given what forms the actual content, I would have loved it if it was a little bit shorter! The animal stories were the icing in the book, since they are adorable.

I might read the next book given a chance since I am now familiar with the people and their foibles.

I received an ARC thanks to NetGalley and the publishers, but the review is entirely based on my own reading experience.

Saddled with Murder by Eileen Brady is the 1st book in the Dr. Kate Vet Mysteries series, but this author also wrote four mystery book in the Kate Turner DVM series. I'm not sure why the two series, unless it's a new publisher, but I have enjoyed every books in the two series. Dr. Kate Turner, is a veterinarian, who is replacing the Hudson Valley vet who is taking a year-long world cruise.  It is Christmas and during a holiday party Kate wished two clients would go away, and her employee added another name. They were posted online, and the next thing you know two clients are dead. Kate gets involved in solving the murders or were they just accidents? There are twists and turns around every corner. I found this book to be a quick read, with a well developed plot and characters. Looking forward to the next book in the series. I really enjoyed this book, and highly recommend this book and both series.
I received a complimentary copy of this book. Opinions expressed in this review are completely my own.

This book had me hooked from the beginning and I think it is going to become one of my top series! The characters were likeable and relatable and I appreciated Kate and her sleuthing skills. She wasn't overly nosey and in everyone's face, but managed to gather a lot of information.

Kate Turner is filling in for the regular Oak Falls Vet. It is Christmas time and Kate is not feeling very jolly. During the work Christmas party someone suggests that they all make a wish. Kate declares that she wishes two of her most difficult clients would just disappear. When that wish starts to come true, Kate starts to wonder what's going on.

Dr. Kate is back in Saddled with Murder, which takes place in upstate New York, during the holidays.
Kate isn’t a fan of the holidays, but tries to get into the spirit of things during the holiday office party.
When a silly party joke turns deadly, there are too many suspects and Kate isn’t sure who’s on her side and who isn’t.

I found this book to be good, but I did feel some parts were dragged out just a bit.
It didn’t take away from the story itself, but it didn’t seem pertinent to the story either.
My rating is 3.75 stars, and I recommend this book to animal lovers.

If you're like I am,  you like reading holiday-themed cozy mystery books. Well, just in time for Christmas, Eileen Brady has a brand new Christmas-themed book that you will really enjoy: Saddled with Murder.

I adored the characters in Saddled with Murder. They're so much fun and easy to get to know. Kate has had a lot of sadness in her life. She lost her mom and brother in an accident when she was a teen. Kate's also been estranged from her father since shortly after the deaths. Her grandfather raised her after her dad got remarried since Kate was unable to understand how her dad could move on. This brings a lot of depth to the character, and those who have experienced this type of loss will "get it."

Mari, Kate's best friend and vet tech, seems like she'd be a great friend to help you keep things in perspective and keep you in a good mood...most of the time. I like Cindy's ability to keep everyone on schedule and to "delicately" handle irritating pet parents. I can't say too much about the side characters without giving any potential spoilers, but they fit into the story well and aren't just filler. The setting in northern New York made me appreciate the fact that I don't live there! It's bad enough in Ohio, but boy do they get a lot of snow in this book! No, really, I am sure it's beautiful there, but I'm done with cold weather!

The plot moves at a good pace, and you will have fun trying to figure out whodunit. I know that the author wrote another series with Dr. Kate in them, but I didn't read those. You'll be fine if you didn't either! Give this one a read this holiday season!

Best word I can think of to describe this book is "bland". No real excitement, nothing to make me care very much about the characters, not much plot at all.

Also this is listed as book 1 in the series and then in the author's afterword, they say it's the 5th! What's that about? In either case it's the last book by this author for me.

A bad wish.

Dr. Kate Turner is a dedicated veterinarian, filling in for the long-time Oak Falls vet while he's on a world cruise. She avoids Christmas because a family tragedy when she was a child had stolen her Christmas spirit. While playing a Christmas game, after a little too much sugar and a lot of coaxing from her coworkers to tell her not-so-nice Christmas wish, she flippantly makes a Christmas wish that the two most cantankerous and complaining people who bring their pets to her would “disappear” so she wouldn't have to deal with them anymore. She wished she hadn't said it; she didn't mean it, of course. Soon after, one of those people is found dead. It looks like he maybe messed up his meds because he was drinking. Alarmingly, Kate finds out that the whole Christmas party, wishes and all, ends up on social media and gossip, rumors, and innuendo fly through the town. Some people are laughing and teasing, some suggest that Kate really isn't a vet but is a witch. Some ask her to wish for someone they know to disappear, hoping she can do for them what she did for herself. And then the second person she wished would disappear dies from what looks like hypothermia. Is someone trying to set her up as a murderer or is someone getting rid of people who were angry at Kate? Does the killer like her, or do they hate her? I really liked and enjoyed this book. It was a step above most cozy mysteries. The characters were likable and smart and normal. I love cozy mysteries and read a ton of them, but many seem to be cookie cutter. There's the sassy heroine who inherits a B&B/book store/bakery/knitting store, etc. She has a wacky & feisty best friend/grandma and a hot/hunky detective/cop boyfriend who keeps telling her to leave the investigation to them. There were a couple guy friends here, but they were in the background. The story was the star. I got wrapped up in it (it was fun and interesting). I thought I knew who the murderer was (more than once) and why they did it. Then I had to change my mind because I got more information and that person no longer made sense. I loved not knowing for sure. I never care if I know who the killer is before I'm done reading; I love the intricate story. It feels more like I'm following along with the characters while they're figuring it all out. I'd definitely read more by this author.

Each year during Advent, I take a break from my usual reading to enjoy books specifically about Christmas. This year I didn't read as many as usual, and the ones I did read were much gentler. This was an intentional decision because, like many other people, I find that virtual meetings--even social activities--take more organizing, more preparation, and are more tiring. Having said all that, I will say the four books I did read, although not the best literature, comprised a tonic for my taxed soul. All four were free "bonus books" from electronic sources.

This is the second one I read--kind of, sort of. This was an audiobook. Once again it's not great literature but it is fun.

Dr Kate is a veterinarian who is not too pleased with life and her various relationships, or perhaps lack of relationships would be a better phrase. She agrees to fill in for another vet for a year, and at the clinic's Christmas party she wishes that three of her human clients would go away.

The vet tech is recording the food table, emphasizing the "litterbox Christmas cake" so that she can post it on social media. Once the video is posted she realizes Dr Kate's wish was also recorded, when both she and Dr Kate discover the body of one of the people she wishes would go away.

The book is definitely a cosy mystery and there are few surprises, but the characters are likeable, and every now and then there is a very good laugh. I think most important, this is the first book of a new series and there's a great deal of room for character development and intricacies to emerge. It's a wonderful escape and I would recommend it to anyone who simply wants "not to think".

Some of the humour is probably the inflexion used by the narrator, Caroline Shaffer. I usually only listen to audiobooks when driving long distances but if I see Ms Shaffer's name on a book again I will seriously consider listening, even if I don't know the author.

Saddled With Murder is advertised as the first in a new series, but it really is a continuation of Brady's Kate Turner DVM cozy series. Same characters, same setting, no big jump in the timeline. The publisher says the decision was made to start fresh because Kate had reached a crossroads in her life, but if she has, I can't figure out what it is. I think it has more to do with Poisoned Pen Press now being a part of Sourcebooks, but I may be wrong. I only mention it because some of you may have been reading Brady's previous books. Let's just move along to what I thought of the book.

Eileen Brady has crafted a solid mystery here that shows the pervasiveness and power of social media. (Let me tell you, I hope nothing I do ever goes viral!) The author kept me guessing, and I always like that.

I do have to admit that the reason why I've read all of Brady's Kate Turner books has more to do with Kate's profession that it has to do with the mysteries themselves. Brady is a vet in real life, and she infuses her stories with what the daily life of a veterinarian is like, funny, sad, and exhausting. A pet owner can pick up quite a few tips from reading Saddled With Murder.

I also learned a lot about how to acclimate a mustang. Bringing a wild horse into pastures, barns, and human contact requires patience and knowledge, and I found the whole process interesting and a welcome change from Kate's usual small animal practice. Another thing I enjoyed is the fact that Brady was inspired to learn about this from seeing our Salt River wild horses right here in Arizona. These horses have a social media presence as well as their own website.

If you love books with an interesting main character, lots of animals, and intriguing mysteries, Eileen Brady's Kate Turner mysteries should be just what you're looking for.

I have enjoyed the character of Kate Turner since reading the author's original series, Kate Turner, DVM. While this book is considered the first in the Dr. Kate Vet mystery series, I think it is best enjoyed if you are able to read the first four books in the Kate Turner series. Dr. Kate's personal life picks up right where it left off in book 4 of that series.

Saddled with Murder takes place just before Christmas and I enjoyed the coziness of the holiday season that was sprinkled in to the mystery. Even though Kate herself is not big on all the trappings of the season due to some things in her personal life, she is trying to enjoy the season this year. In addition to the storyline about her past, the storyline of her present life, namely her romantic life, continues. There is a bit of a love triangle situation going on, which is not my favorite trope. However, it all gets straightened out by the end.

The mystery premise is an interesting one. The involvement of social media and its possible influence on people is all too real. Dr. Kate's ability to live with her embarrassment regarding the situation and not be angry at her friend and co-worker was admirable. I enjoyed the way Kate worked through this mystery without interfering in the actual investigation.

One of my favorite things about this series is Kate's profession as a veterinarian. I appreciate the detailed descriptions the author gives of Kate's days treating animals in her clinic and on the road.

The secondary characters are interesting and I hope to see them again in future books. I love the relationship Kate his with her grandfather. I also really like Kate and her no-nonsense way of approaching life.

If you are looking for a cozy mystery with an interesting main character, a solid mystery and a bit of Christmas coziness, I think you will enjoy Saddled with Murder.

Christmas is always a difficult time for Dr. Kate Turner, but she tries to throw herself into the holiday mood at the vet clinic party. The party goers are asked to reveal a “secret selfish holiday wish” pertaining to the clinic, and she blurts out a wish that two of her more difficult clients would disappear. She names no names, but her assistant gleefully supplies them: Frank Martindale and Radeen Lassitor.
The next day she makes a house call to deliver some pet meds and discovers the homeowner dead on the floor. It’s Frank Martindale. Kate tries to convince herself it’s just a freaky coincidence. Things take a disturbing turn, though, when she finds out the video from the party, including her secret wish, has been posted on social media and is racking up hundreds of views.
Immediately comments start, online and in person, that Kate is a witch, a magician who can make wishes come true. Most are said jokingly. Some aren’t. Police Chief Garcia assures her she is not to blame, but when the second name on the list turns up dead, he starts to take a closer look at her.
Saddled with Murder is the first in the Dr. Kate Vet Mystery series, and it is a delight. Dr. Kate is a likable character, a dedicated professional with a somewhat complicated love life. The other characters are fully-fleshed individuals, and the beauty of the Hudson Valley in winter is vividly depicted. The saddle of the title belongs to Lobo, a wild mustang bought from the Bureau for Land Management but a local woman who owns an animal sanctuary. The book provides information on the plight of the wild horses, a subject dear to the author’s heart.
