Rikar finds himself once again in the gladiator arenas, fighting for his life against genetically mutated warriors. Some, so far gone, they can only be described as monsters. Each time he is given a Nano treatment, Rikar fears he will become just like those he fights as his sanity is slowly ripped away. The only peace he finds in The Kingdom, as the arena is called by its owner, is through a beautiful woman who’s been imprisoned there as well.
Lindsay was sold by her family to Vulnitro years ago and has been imprisoned in The Kingdom ever since. She is one of the many women on Victors’ Row whose purpose is to reward the winners of the arena. Lindsay is tired of seeing good men turn into monsters due to Nano experimentations. Every day she fights to keep her dignity, keep her friends alive and out of harm’s way. But it’s been so long she no longer remembers life on the outside. She has grown to believe that all men are the same, and even if they aren’t, they would eventually become so as the genetic engineering rips them of their humanity. That is until she meets Rikar.
Does Lindsay dare let herself believe in freedom again? Can she trust that a sanctuary exists out there for people like her? And can she dare fall in love in a place like The Kingdom?
Lyndsay began her writing adventure when she moved to Colorado with her husband. She has always loved stories and has been an avid reader for most of her life. Her fascination with science and astronomy started in school and only grew as the years went on. Most of her inspiration comes from day to day interactions as well as movies, game’s and articles. When not writing, Lyndsay is playing with her two dogs, Skip and Peaches, or running and kick boxing at the gym.
Rikar is the second book of The Sanctuary series. Both books are standalone novels but it makes sense to read them in sequence to get the most out of the storyline. As much as I loved the first one, Grave, I couldn’t put this one down, either, and binge-read it. Rikar is a gladiator who is forced to fight genetically mutated warriors in an arena called The Kingdom and he receives treatment that threatens to rip him of his humanity as well. He is afraid to turn into a monster like so many others there but then he meets Lindsay who is one of the many women held captive there. Lindsay has been living in the arena for a long time already and each day is a struggle for survival and protection of those she loves and cares about. She doesn’t allow herself to trust any men because if they are not already monsters, the treatment will soon make them so. But then she meet Rikar and everything changes. This book is a scifi fantasy love affair par excellence. The struggles of the characters feel so real and I was shedding tears and rooting for the couple throughout the book. The storyline is solid, adventurous and exciting but also romantic and full of hope in the most dire circumstances. Rikar and Lindsay prove that no matter where in the universe you are (in whichever universe that is), the fundamental truth is that love is stronger than everything else. I absolutely loved this book! Go, get the series and enjoy it yourself!
It's always enjoyable to revisit characters from a previous book and getting to know Rikar in a whole new light was especially fun.
The world created by L.H. Whitlock in RIKAR is as unique and interesting as her characters, and as usual, she doesn't fail to bring it all alive from the mix of mutated species to the vivid scenery, and romance in unexpected places.
What an imagination and written so vividly that I can picture what these gladiators have been turned into I can also feel the desperation to be normal that you feel such sorrow for them and their inability to fight off the effects of the nanos. Also such a love story that unfolds between Lindsey and Rikar even in the desperate circumstances they find themselves in. Can't wait for her next book
I read a lot and absolutely was hooked on this story line and can’t wait for the next of this series. There are hero’s and heroines and hotness. I can’t imagine how the story about Opal will flesh out and what about Fefe and Huvoc? Can I say it, damn cliffhangers!
