Cute, clever, and comically ingenious, Andrés Colmenares’ popular shark comics are a sweet, sincere tonic for these anxious, troubled times.
This hardcover collection features the cute, uplifting and ingenious aquatic cartoons of Andrés Colmenares, the creator of Wawawiwa Comics, followed by millions of fans around the globe. While sharks are one of the ocean’s deadliest predators , these sharks can smell insecurity, doubt, and gloom, and are quick to strike — with kindness, cuteness, and positivity!
When Sharks Attack With Kindness includes a QR code linking to a special instrumental soundtrack for audiences to enjoy while reading the book.
this is an aggressively wholesome book, which ordinarily wouldn’t appeal to me, but, like a pool party, adding sharks to the equation changes everything.
the intro lets you know exactly what brand of corny-adorable to expect:
This is a book about kindness, relationships, and love, and since these are such deep subjects, I’ve made it underwater.
it’s cheesy and silly, but these days, we could all do with a bit of both.
the illustrations are very charming
and as far as the sentiments go, even though SOME OF US have become cynical monsters ground down by _______ (noun) and, _______ (recent atrocity), and the _______ (adjective) state of the world, it’s good to be reminded of certain truths, even if they’re a little trite.
like, we’re never as alone as we feel
and we contribute value to the world, even when we don’t realize it
there’s also some good advice here in the areas of conflict resolution
and tips on impressing potential employers
the real takeaway here is that even when we fail to live up to our impossible goals
we can at least fail adorably.
that is the lesson i am choosing to learn here.
it's the same *kind* of book as The Boy, the Mole, the Fox and the Horse, but it's cuter and funnier, so i didn't feel as emotionally grubby at the end of this one.
Sharks are just the sweetest cutie pies in the whole wide world. Amiright?
Seriously, everyone needs a bit of positivity and kindness and love in their life. Especially in times like these. Oh, and the funny. You definitely need some of the funny.
Yeah, I can totally see that happen. Not all of these mostly one or two panel comics are as realistic or as relatable. Life often sucks. There’s no way around it. Unless there is. Like here. I think I just needed this book right now. It made me feel all warm and fluffy, and besides all the content smiles it also made me laugh out loud a couple of times. Not least at this perfect illustration of my morning self:
Now, where’s my coffee? Give me the damn coffee!!! *cries* The universe hates me.
Just kidding. It’s a lovely day. With sharks.
Thanks to NetGalley and Andrews McMeel Publishing for providing me with a digital ARC in exchange for an honest review. All the carefully chosen words and digressions are my own and in no way influenced by the aforementioned.
This is one of the best graphic comic collections I have read this year. And considering the number of books I've read from that genre in 2020, that's saying quite a lot!
Set around sea creatures especially sharks, the book espouses the values of friendship, kindness and support. Every single comic conveys a lot.
The entire book has the cutest illustrations that are totally "Awww-inducing". You'll begin to see sharks and other sea animals in a very different light.
Absolutely loved this book and would recommend it to one and all.
I received an advance review copy of the book from NetGalley, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.

Hahahaha!!! The sea human. That's a fun way of introducing a human in a world of sea animals!
I just love this book so much!
What's up with this colourful pages? I totally fell for the entire book cover to cover!
The illustration is just too cute to handle.
And the comics got me real bad. Because they poke you. Right at your heart. Like hitting the mean spot and turn you back to a better babylike being. We needed something like this. I needed this. Forget the kids who would read this. The adults are going to get this for the kids so the adult here is thoroughly impressed and telling the other adults elsewhere to get this and celebrate this cuteness.
Sharks holding coffee mugs. I mean I never thought I would see it ever. Friendship rules updated and done rightly so!
I repeat the entire book is just too cute. It makes you feel fluffy and soft and kick away all your fake friends.
Thank you, author and the publisher for the advanced reader copy.
This collection was relentlessly nice and for that reason I feel sort of bad I didn't like it. It was incredibly, relentlessly nice and compassionate, in the same neighborhood as Mr. Rogers. But unlike Mr. Rogers, this collection felt like it was devoted to erasing the bad things and and feelings that happen in life as quickly as possible. I loved the positivity, but I don't automatically feel better when my friends or family give me a hug. Positivity and kindness and compassion help by acknowledging the pain and hurt and sadness and working to comfort and fix the underlying causes, not by trying to paper over and push down bad feelings as quickly as possible. These cartoons were very cutely drawn and did have a positive message, but it felt like there was no substance or honesty behind them.

When we are not vigilant as a society, Ziggy is allowed to be reinvented again and again. If you see something, say something. Only you can prevent aphorisms of friendship, optimism, and positivity.
I had seen these comics on Instagram but didn't know it was a book!! The art is so cute and the meaning is deep. It tells us to enjoy every aspect of our life instead of being sad about the things that go wrong. I absolutely adored the friendship between the shark and the pilot fish!! this book is a fun read and is meaningful. either you are a small kid or a grown-up you will definitely enjoy this book. I wished even I had an electric eel as my friend :) ( For free electricity **smiles like an idiot**). Appreciation for little things in life is what makes our life bearable right! So yeah, please read this beautiful comic book with beautiful art and even more beautiful words!! Thank you, NetGalley for the free copy of this book in return for an honest review
I think the problem with my experience reading this book is that I went into it expecting more humor and less over-the-top sweetness, which is totally fine — it just wasn't what I was looking for, necessarily! It definitely reminds me of a handful of other very cutesy slice-of-life positivity comics featuring animals, though I can think of a lot of other comic strips that, in my opinion, just... do it better, unfortunately. There wasn't anything particularly special about When Sharks Attack With Kindness, but it was cute enough that I'd still recommend checking out a copy if you're into this sort of thing.
When Sharks Attack with Kindness is the perfect little book to help relieve the anxiety so many of us are feeling in 2020. This comics collection features cute sea creatures with lots of clever and positive messages. Each comic is only a page or 2 long, so it is definitely a collection vs. a continuous story. Many of these adorable vignettes made me smile as I sat reading them with my cup of tea and a fire going in the fireplace. The collection is also totally age appropriate for younger readers but even adult readers will enjoy it if they are looking for a light, uplifting, quick read.
Thank you to the publisher for the advanced review copy!
a collection of comic strips that is such a mood booster & makes you feel better generally about life and friendships. :') i think i picked it up at such a right time bc life has been so tough and it was really nice to pick up something light yet positive at the same time.
also i love looking at adorable illustrations bc they will instantly make me happy & this book is just one of them. 😍🥰 there are times where you feel anxious about things and reading this helps to relieve that anxious feeling. it feels like receiving comfort from a good friend, truly such a heartwarming book.
a great short read to take a break from everything and would definitely also make such a lovely gift especially to your loved ones who are currently having a tough time. ✨
This book is so cute 🥰🥰 I fell in love with the illustration and messages the second I started reading it. Thank you, Netgalley, for the eARC! I want to buy this book when it's available in the bookstores in 2021 😍
Highly recommended to all, not only children. Everyone should read this charming and lovely book 🥰
This little book is everything that's good in the world.
I already followed @wawawiwacomics on Instagram and knew I was in for an adorable comic book, but reading them one after the other made me realize that they actually tackle very important topics, like love, kindness and friendships, and it does so in a fun, fluffy way that makes you want more. If this was 1000 pages long I would still devour it whole. I just love the good vibes that come from every illustration and want all these characters to be my friends.
Any kid (and grown up) will love this gem of a book. I'm seriously considering getting it for my nephews.
A huge thank you to NetGalley and the publishers for the e-ARC in exchange of an honest and voluntary review.
"I totally misread the situation." je z toho moja najobľúbenejšia stránka. Skrátka taký správny druh cute nálože. Also, žraloky vždy dostanú odo mňa 5/5. Takže tak.

3/5
This book caught my attention by this description: "Cute, clever, and comically ingenious, Andrés Colmenares’ popular shark comics are a sweet, sincere tonic for these anxious, troubled times." And these comics were indeed very cute. Some of them were also very funny. I also felt like some of the jokes went over my head, but I think that's where my Dutch language barrier came in, unfortunately!
All with all, funny, a lot of underwater pun-jokes, so if you like jokes with a pun, this book is for sure for you. I liked in the end they mentioned an audio experience to make it all better, but I would next time put this in the beginning of the book instead of the end.
I smiled the ENTIRE WAY THROUGH reading this comic book. At the end my cheeks actually hurt a little bit from smiling, haha. I had to take a picture of a few pages and send it to a friend because it was perfect for them. This is such a cute, silly little book - but the messages in it are really lovely and profound (or as the author would say, "deep" which is why it takes place underwater!) The illustrations are so cute, and I love that there's a balance of comics with deep messages about friendship and self-love and some that are just SO silly (like deep sea anglerfish changing their lights to colored ones for Christmas mode!) I highly recommend this book, and plan to keep a copy around to flip through when I need a pick-me up or a smile.
Super cute illustrations and I love the overall theme of kindness and friendship, but most of the ‘jokes’ fell flat for me. I didn’t find this book particularly wholesome or funny like it set out to be.
„When Sharks Attack With Kindness“ is a book filled with positivity, kindness, love, and other emotions so deep, the author decided it should take place underwater.“
I always love a cute lil book on animals, friendship, and kindness. It was adorable and wholesome. Took off one star because at times it felt a little too similar to Cat’s Cafe.
I received this book from Netgalley in exchange of an honest review.
I have to be honest and say when I saw this book that I wasn’t interested in it. I thought it would be a picture book with nice sharks. Not in the mood for that. But then I saw it was a comic, and I was curious. My plan was to read it the next day, but instead I immediately downloaded and started reading it. My hubby who was next to me got curious about what I was reading when I kept showing him pages and so we ending up reading and laughing. We both had a lot of fun.
This book is about animals in the sea (oh and a human who at times pops up on the surface). Mostly we see a shark going through the daily things. Going to work with a fish tie and he becomes the best of friends with him (yes really). Not sure if it is the same shark, but we also see a shark with a little shark, celebrating birthdays and trying to build things (though I would recommend real hammers not hammersharks). But we also meet other animals, from fish who have those little lights in front of them switch from normal lights to Christmas mode, or the narwhal who wants to make a selfie and lets a friend hang a camera on his nose/horn. There is plenty to see and plenty to laugh.
But next to laughing, this book is filled to the brim with positivity, that one should persevere despite the outcome not looking positive, happy message, everyone is helping the others, there are inspirational quotes (I would truly call them that). It gave me a big fluffy feeling and I was definitely in the need for that. With COVID (not sure how bad the situation is when this review goes live in Februrary, but in the end of November things are going up and down and there is still plenty of worry about things) raging around for the past 8/9 months I could definitely use a fluffy and happy blanket of positivity and humour.
The illustrations are fun as well, I love the style and I love how the animals were drawn.
All in all, if you need something funny and inspirational be sure to check out this wonderful and fun book! Recommended!
What an absolutely delightful book. I loved every second of this beautifully drawn book about the creatures that live in the sea and how they choose kindness over being mean [think scary sharks etc] and how they can help each other have better days when they are sad or frustrated. This is a perfect way to get kids to talk about their feelings and what scares them or makes them sad or whatever is going on in their lives [and heaven knows we need more things that help us be open about all the struggles that we are all currently facing in this world today]. It is so well-done and lovely and I enjoyed every second of this book and immediately added it to my wish list because I need to own this to be able to go back myself and remind myself that I have friends around me when I am sad and that better days are ahead if we only look for them. Absolutely fantastic!!

This is a collection of comics about a shark and the various underwater creatures that are his friends. Sharks may be feared but the sharks in this collection show their insecurities and awkwardness. You also get to know many of the friends of the sharks such as narwhal, penguins, clownfish, whales, catfish, electric eels and angler fishe. There is no overarching story – each comic is standalone.
What I loved about this collection: •The artwork is beautiful, colorful and adorable. It makes me just want to hug these characters and plaster my walls with the prints! •The stories that this collection depicts are so relatable! It tackles topics like insecurity, loneliness, friendship, and purpose in life but makes them very approachable in a comic format. •There are also very silly comics that play on names of the sea creatures. They remind me of a bad (good?) Dad joke and made me giggle. •I read this book in one sitting. I kept telling myself that I just was going to read one more page and then it was over. •I left this book feeling happy and with a giant smile. It really brightened my night.
I have one small critique of the book. At the end, there is a QR code to a “soundtrack.” I really wish they had put that in the front of the book so I could have listened while reading. (The QR code also didn’t take me to the soundtrack but that may be due to this copy being an ARC.) It’s such a cool concept to have a soundtrack for a book.
I would highly recommend this collection. The artwork is cute and colorful and the comic touches on topics that many can relate to. This graphic novel will brighten your day. I also think it would make a great gift to someone who needs a smile.

I have been a Wawawiwa fan since a long time ago. I truly love his comics. They’re cute, funny and I’m always marveled by their creativity. I’ve also read some of the comics about shark and his sea friends. So, I was sure I would enjoy this and I wasn’t wrong.
The drawings are sooo cute🥰. I loved the message about friendship, love and positivity (especially this terrible 2020). And I’m so happy that the creator is publishing a book.
the only “bad” thing I can say it’s that I thought it was going to be a continuous full story (don’t know why), but it’s just a collections of comics (and I’ve already seen a few of the illustrations); besides, I couldn’t find the playlist (probably because it’s too early, but still).
So, the book really worth it. I highly recommend it. And, in case you’re still not a fan of Wawawiwa comics, what are you waiting for?

"This is a book about kindness, relationships and love"
I read it in just one sitting. Such a beautiful reading! And such an important message. The thing that first draw me to this book was of course the beautiful illustrations of the cover, I just cannot resist a cute graphic novel. As for the contents of the book, it is perfect for children (and even adults like myself since I enjoyed it so much) who love the sea, since they will learn about beautiful creatures in the nicest way. It is also great for them to learn valuable lessons; friendship, caring and sharing; and they are genuinely funny. The vibe of it was very similar to The Little World of Liz Climo, since both of them are composed of cute (little) animals sharing valuable life lessons.

4.5 I was drawn to the book because of the cover with the shark. Normally I am not particularly fond of sharks but this book was an exception. It is not continuous story but rather separate situations, I didn't mind it here. I read it in one sitting because I just couldn't put it down.
The illustrations are cute and I loved the introduction of the 'sea' human. I am glad I read this at the end of the year, especially after this year. This was just a perfect way to relax and soak up the positive energy.
I was smiling so much when I was reading it. I loved the messages of the book on how to be more positive in life and about friendship.
