A Corpse in the Freezer

Rate this book
Eighteen-year-old Izzy arrives at university looking for a fresh start. But when the harmony in her student hall is shattered by the arrival of a new flatmate, it seems as though her best laid plans will go awry.

Eilish Hart is rude, aggressive and keen to manipulate everyone around her. As the other flatmates fall under her control, it’s down to Izzy to work out if her new nemesis could be capable of something altogether more sinister.

Writing has always been my passion. It was my favourite hour a week at primary school, and I started on my first, truly abysmal book as a teenager. So it wasn’t a difficult decision to study literature at university which led to an MA in Creative Writing. I spent a long time writing kids’ books, including funny fairy tales, dystopic adventures and serious issue-based YA, before switching to murder mysteries last year.

I grew up in a crime fiction family and spent a long time dreaming up the idea for my detective Izzy Palmer’s debut novel. A Corpse Called Bob is my first full-length book for adults in what is already becoming a long series.

I’m a Welsh-Irish-Englishman originally from South London but now living with my French/Spanish wife and slightly muddled daughter in Burgos, a beautiful city in the north of Spain. I write overlooking the Castilian countryside, trying not to be distracted by the vultures and red kites that fly past my window each day.

I'm glad that I didn't have to deal with college flatmates like Eilish. I'm tossing up whether I would be a weak co-tenant or... I have been known to blow up!!

It was a great introduction to Izzy.

like and disliked this novella; at times it read just fine and the antagonistic ways of Eilish made the story intolerable, because she was dubbed the flatmate from hell, and perhaps why, by the end of this story, the flatmates were all the better for having had such a horrific experience...those who were forced (brainwashed) to live with Eilish remained for two years during their degree; except for Izzy who had fled to another dorm with far better flatmates.
-----------------
A brief description of this flatmate from hell:
With the arrival of their fifth flatmate…Eilish; she wore tattoos on her hands, her head was shaven except for a spiky green fringe and she wore gigantic black boots that made her two inches taller...reads a bit like an encounter with Road Warrior in Mad Max...that movie/film.

This was a short novella about Izzy’s time at uni and her terrible roommate. She has 4 housemates and one of them ate her steak after a night of drinking. She is almost positive that it is the terrible one but she has to prove it a la Poirot. She does by cross examining her and catching her in a lie. Or she could have just read the note that her friend had left her saying that she saw who ate her steak. Not bad but not super either. Did not make me want to read more Izzy books.

A delightful novella to introduce readers to the Izzy Palmer mysteries. This fun read will have you chuckling and shaking your head at the hilarious life of a university student living with four other whacky people. By all means pick up Brown’s novels of PI Izzy Palmer to see how life treats her after university.

Not bad for a first book (novella) in the series. I'm hoping it gets better as the protagonist will be out of college (uni I guess is what they call it in England). Maybe Izzy will mature! I can't imagine roommates like she had, but then I attended college as a young married gal (mid-20's) after working a full day at my job!

A look at Izzy in her first semester at university, three of her flat mates are reasonable people, but the fourth, someone from hell! A very short read that made me feel sad and angry at the same time!

This is Izzy Palmer's first Novella set at University. Spoiler! There isn't actually a dead body but this doesn't spoil the fun of the story and shows us how Izzy's mind has always worked!

A great beginning for Izzy. I loved reading about Izzy's time at University and how she solved her first crime without the help of Ramesh or her family.

A great introduction to series. It follows the protagonist Izzy Palmer, when she was in the university. The story reminds me of The Hardy Boys or Nancy Drew. with the great case to solve! Very good!

Not a murder mystery. It's a fun romp through Izzy's early months at university, her fellow students and solving a mystery probably common to many students.

This novella, A CORPSE IN THE FREEZER, is an entertaining little mystery in a setting of first year university students stuck together in a school flat (small dormitory). A nice afternoon read.
