A YA Dystopian Sci Fi Novel

A violent past. An ill-fated mission. A love that refuses to die.

After years in suspended animation, Griffin and Luke wake up alone on the star-ship Calypso. Griffin recalls fragments from his past. However, he has no clue what happened to their fellow crew members.

TOM, the ship’s beat-up android is no help. He informs Griffin that their mission is of critical importance. The problem? TOM has no clue what the mission entails.

Meanwhile, Griffin's intense attraction to Luke builds. TOM is determined to squash the budding romance. Does an even more sinister agenda lurk in his silicone brain? Meanwhile, evidence of violence lies hidden in a restricted zone. Griffin hacks TOM to learn what happened. But everything goes wrong.

They crash land on a storm-ravaged planet called Sian. Populated by incredible extraterrestrial beasts and amid an uprising against a brutal dictator, Luke is captured.

The fate of the planet will depend upon Griffin saving his friend and accepting his destiny. Can he unravel the extraordinary truth about their mission before it's too late?

M.S. Kaminsky

M.S. Kaminsky writes young adult urban fantasy and sci-fi with dashes of suspense, mystery and romance. His most recent release, The Mermaid Curse Series, reveals the enigmatic origin of mermaids in a gripping fantasy that spans generations of women.

When MSK is not writing he can be found with his husband attempting to tame the white water rapids of upstate New York or weeding in their garden. So far the rapids (and the weeds) are winning!

M.S. has been a lifelong writer. At four, he dictated his first short story to his dad before his hands were coordinated enough to hold a pencil. Today, his coordination is still questionable. However, his determination to write a good story remains just as strong as that spunky, four-year-old.

I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntary.

It's a nice adventure space/fantasy story that starts with mutiny on a starship Calypso. Griffin wakes up what seems to be some sort of hibernation sack that is failing rapidly. After he rescues himself and Luke, they counter a very defective android Tom. They have a important mission to fulfill but Tom doesn't remember what the mission is. When they crash land in a stormy planet Sian, things are not going as predicted as they set out to mine the materials to fix the ship. Griffin and Luke are separated when they are captured. When Griffin tries to sort out his feelings for Luke, he meets the storm people. Will Tom remember the mission on time? Will Griffin see Luke again?

It's a very rich fantasy/sci-fi story, the landscapes and the free beasts roaming the planet are very creatively described. You can immerse yourself into the story that has a mix of fantasy and science fiction, the same as the Golden City on Sian. A mix of old technology with primitive building styles. The people are as richly described in it's differences. This is a different kind of story I normally read. Where men have feelings for each other, but nonetheless interesting to see how the relation is going to go between Luke and Griffin. The setting reminds me of Star Wars. It is a nice, adventure story with enough action the keep you sitting on the edge of your chair.

ONE NAIL-BITING HUMDINGER!!!
Off limits! Kaminsky brought out the heavy artillery, locked and loaded, adding the wins and calculating the losses, jump-starting the thrilling rides, wrapping this baby up sleek shiny and tight. Twixt, twinned and interwoven, exposing the intimidating trials and challenging tribulations along with a slew of shocking twists and startling turns, rolling with the current and breaking waves, catapulting this gem to staggering heights. Anarchy runs rampant and havoc is rife, rousting the drama, intrigue, danger, spiraling suspense and unnerving situations, along with a double dose of chicanery while dodging disaster, you have one sensational experience. Bearing the burdens and taking down foes with this action packed, hard hitting, pulse racing, heart pounding, adrenaline pumping, page flipping whirlwind, ratcheting up the exuberance and intensity, blasting this baby to a whole new level. Lines blur and boundaries crossed, limitations are pushed and manipulated, kicking this baby into overdrive, slamming it into a tailspin with astonishing impacts. The characters are complex and realistic with qualities and traits, adding diversity, transforming into amazing personalities. The scenes are strikingly sharp with abundant details and vivid descriptions, as to give you a full understanding and realism that balance and blend smoothly. Fantastic job Kaminsky, thanks for sharing this little guy with us.

This is an exciting, hard-to-put-down Sci-Fi adventure. Griffin and Luke wake up in a damaged, empty space ship with only a severely damaged android to give them any information, which is at best spotty. They only know that they must complete a mission, but don't know what it is. Although its prime audience is teenage and YA boys, it can be enjoyed by any age and gender. There is no explicit action and only one scene of implied physical intimacy between the main characters. I found that the title could have been better, as it references a single incident in the book that has no real connection to the storyline. Also, I did not like that the book ends with a cliffhanger. I received a free copy of this book and am voluntarily leaving a review.

The storyline is complex but well thought out and well written. The world created is described so well that I can envision it without a struggle. The story flows smoothly and I enjoyed it a great deal. A real page turner that pulls the reader in and holds your attention fully. Highly recommended!

Intriguing read!
A gifted storyteller…loved the well done scifi elements woven throughout! It’s a pageturner with just enough tension, so be prepared. The characters are well drawn, with an interesting combination of vulnerability and strength. The worldbuilding is robust and TOM the android is quite an enigma. I did receive an ARC of this book and am pleased to leave an honest review. Enjoy! Looking forward to more…

An interesting story but the author didn’t include a
lot of details that would have tied the story up in a better package. The reader is left to make assumptions on his own.

If you like a story with same sex attractions then you
will enjoy reading this book. I just felt that I would have enjoyed it more if I had known more about the story as I was reading it.

HAL’s baaack!
An easy-to-read and action-packed mash-up of ‘2021: A Space Odyssey’ and the classic ‘Mutiny on the Bounty’. The author even threw in a little ‘Wizard of Oz’…

Some sage advice from the author:
‘The storm always wins.’
We can try to fight it, hide from it, or outrun it…but in the end, it’s best to learn from the mistakes of others and prepare to wait it out. Not to sound cynical or fatalist, but there are some things bigger than we are and survival (rather than reckless bravado) is our priority. Live to see another day…and take a stand against the things we can win.

Fave line:
‘Carry not the cargo of regrets’

May our intentions be aligned with benevolence, encouragement, health, joy, kindness, optimism, peace, restoration, teamwork, etc.

I would definitely read more by this author. In fact, I have since read ‘Recipe X (Awakened #1)’ for my Summer Reading Challenge.
