Ruinland Ranger #1

Framework of the Frontier

Rate this book
Monster girls, divine magic, and a frontier of dungeons to tame.

William Adams hoped to escape his dead-end life by reconnecting with estranged friends. They died when a floating cuboid interrupted the gaming night and vaporized everyone. Waking with powers reminiscent of his paladin character, William finds himself alone in a fantasy frontier of dungeoneers, desperadoes, and damsels of the monster girl varieties.

Set on reuniting with his friends, William accepts the duties of a Frontier Ranger. Unfortunately, the job is a ticket to a lifetime of trouble.

Local ruffians, a laser golem infested dungeon, and enemies from the deep seas force the former mall cop to stretch his magic of divine blessings to its limits. Thankfully, William has a nerdy faun archeologist and a psychic aboleth princess by his side. Together they explore the hidden mysteries of the Cursed Frontier.

Ruinland Ranger contains explicit engagements between a monster girl harem and the main character.

Glad I gave it a second chance
Full disclosure on my first reading I DNF after 5 or 6 pages. I hated the tone it started with and assumed that tone would carry through the whole book. (Shout out to Sean for letting me know I'd jumped to the wrong conclusion)
It's odd that one of the themes of this book is redemption. A guy is given a second chance and he takes that chance to live a life of service and integrity. Then this book gives him every opportunity to give up his principles, and he stands fast.
By the half way point, I really liked this guy.
There are some sex scenes. Wile they are steamy and well written, sex is not pivotal to the plot.
I'd give this book 4 stars except for the rough opening pages (they pass very quickly) and it really started to blend with 5 -6 other harem books I've read. I actually got confused once or twice about plot elements when I remembered that I was thinking of another book just like this one.
Still, you gotta' get a star just for going from "hated it" to like it in less than 200 pages.

It's ok.

The author did manage to have some interesting moments in the story but I never really got engaged with the story. The pacing was ok but I just did not enjoy the progression very much. I give it a 3.5out of 5rounded up.

Excellent

For the beginning of new series you can't ask for a better written story. Editing was much much better then the normal first book. Cool characters and their interaction was first rate. More more more

A fun read. Didn't quite clear my hurdle for a 5th star, but I will recommend this if the blurb appeals to you. Good potential for continuation, so I'll be looking for a follow-up.

So just got a little over a third of the way through and had to stop.

So this is a book about a wimpy coward who makes excuses and gets led around by the nose since he refuses to act like the ranger he is suppose to be. He is portrayed as a mall cop who gets pissed when he gets called out on being "not a real cop". Yet when you judge him by his actions that is wholly correct. His companion has such self esteem issues that the sex is borderline statutory rape. This whole thing is a bad joke based on terrible characters, not their development, not their portrayal, their very base design.

Okay, I have to start this off by saying I honestly had very little expectation for this book.

It's cover feels very on the nose and more about ooh look curvy and squishy which made me think of many other smutty stories I've come across which are... less than impressive.

The first chapter of his book was right in line with my expectations. It's not a good first chapter. It's boring and while it explains a little of the story. Overall it can honestly be forgotten after it happened.

That all out of the way. The rest of the novel. It is quite good. Nothing amazing I will admit. But it's far better than some stories I've read. The MC actually struggles. he's not a god that everything throws themselves at just because. And he worried about why the ladies like him. It's important to him that they like HIM not just the vessel he occupies. Which shows a lot of maturity that other stories don't.

I will likely be looking out for the 2nd book in the series. I tip my hat to you Artwell. Your work is impressive and I will be recommending it to others.

Pretty bad

The beginning if full of promise but it all goes down hill from there. The MC is supposed to be good at table top rpg's but he acts like a noob the whole book. He is ridiculously stupid in situations where even a child would do better, he barely has access to magic because he is too stupid to really try to access his talents, the sex ecenes are a bit too much and too many, and frankly the story keeps getting more boring the further you go in. He repeatedly let's himself be scammed because he is too weak willed to do anything about it. The story starts with a promise of awesome magic but ends up in a fart.

3 out of 10 the MC is a doormat and constantly drops his convictions when ever it is convenient. Just mother to like about them.

Also the author uses my mosted hated form of prolonging the plot. Every time the character discover something that would reveal something about the plot or the characters there is instantly an emergency they have to take care of then they never revisit the subject. So, it feels like the reader is left hanging and that whatever they discover is meaningless compared to the constant fluff scenes that over shadow them. Needless to say I will not be continuing this series and it will take a lot for me to return to this author in the future.

Good but not the best

Harem novel and a fun one at that. This one is a bit slow and the hero needs work as he has undefined abilities and only willpower to work with. By the end of the book he opens a can of worms empire style. The sexy time scenes are good and the characters have some depth but there is much name confusion in the middle as there is a large people dump. If there are more books I see some empire building as there is a framework... Duh. But I would like the MC to have some horsepower himself.

Good Story, Tough Reading

I’ll justify the 4-stars instead of 5 because of the poor editing and, in my opinion, choice of adjectives through out. The combination made it difficult to easily comprehend. On the other hand, the story, characters, and environment were all descriptively presented in a manner that made for a good read. The adult material was a bit raw but skimming over it for the sake of the story was necessary as it integrated into the flow. If you’re a forgiving reader and can overlook the editing, I do recommend this book for it’s originality.

Nice fantasy harem read

I enjoyed reading this book. The story is logical and a nice read. The sex scenes are well written and vanilla -ish.
Despite being a harem story there was no inflation of love interests. Each one is still meaningful.
The story flows nicely and there were no gaping plotholes, the motivation of the characters is clear and stringent.
I am looking forward to read the next book!

A great read, really fun, with good pacing, and interesting plot. The MC does not tend to make stupid decitions when he has a proper foothold in things, he makes mistake mostly because of missinformation. I would have loved a more clear exposition of his power and how they work, but it plays well with the plot of him having to actually work toward understanding what he got and making it work. The subtle mix of genre in this novel is well done and enjoyble at the same time.

Really enjoyable

Not too much op-ed mc with enough wit to win over Goliath.
Attractive female characters with their own personality and buyable romance between them and the protagonist.
Exciting challenges enough to give you anticipation.
Wholesomeness and love.
I really enjoyed it and I would recommend giving it a try.

Uggg dnf sorry but this book was terrible. It started out with a boring story of how lame and broke the MC was and his supposed friends. 😴 it was a snore fest 😴. Over an hour of boring then the transition to another world 🌎 uhhh it was just a ball of confusion 😕 and disappointment skipped around a bit just couldn't get into it. I have just wasted 3 hours of my life

Great read

Took chance on this as it came recommended from some people who like the same types of books that I do. And am really lag that I did. Really great read with a flawed MC who is not OP’d. Look forward to the next one.

A fantastically fun time

The characters are decent and mostly likeable. The MC is neither annoyingly hesitant nor is he a phallus on legs. The plot remained engaging without going too quickly or too slowly. Overall a good read.

This book was really well written. I'm hesitant to give new authors a chance but this is on par with other harem writers. I hope to see book 2 in the future

Great

Really good work and amazing character. There was no spelling errors and the story flowed great. Just a minor pet peeve about a paladin that can't heal or smite

Fun and slightly different

Interesting take on portal realms with a dash of Lovecraft. I do wish the main character's abilities advanced a bit more but hope to see that in book 2.

The book had that ‘outline of a story’ feel more than that of a fully composed novel. Transitions between scenes were harsh and jarring. The first chapter just rumbled through without any sort of context or introductions.
