A few years ago I chanced upon a documentary of Dr Jordan Nguyen's and became fascinated in the work he was doing in the area of interactive avatars for future generations. His book has been on my coffee-table-too-read pile for sometime. Last week my husband attended a conference where Dr Jordan Nguyen was presenting, and what a surprise!, while sitting at my desk at work, to receive a FaceTime call from Jordan! Unreal! - aside from the reality that I was wearing no make-up and sporting bed-hair (work from home consequence). That night I put aside the books I was reading to read A Human's Guide to the Future. "Sometimes this is how you meet....people in your life - sheer strange randomness." (p290)

A Human's Guide to the Future is a fascinating exploration of how and where technology can take us in the future. Dr Jordan’s vision and his work to assist people with disabilities, including spinal cord injuries, is impressive.

This book spoke to my personal interests:
1. documenting life (now), through writing and recording of family, (which I have been doing for many years).
2. The fourth dimension - Time (my obsession).
3. The brain (my 2020/21/22 focus/readings).

"I also increase my self-awareness and perspective by imagining myself at the end of my life looking back. Did I work towards the things I believed in? Is there anything I regret not having done in life? Was I true to my values and integrity, and authentic to who I am? The helps me to remain clear about my path, make decisions and prioritise where to use my precious resource. That precious resource - TIME." (p321-322)

3.5 stars.

Doc Jordy is very well-suited to address the subject matter, but a lot of the book is more biographical than one would expect from the description of the book: this is a weakness for me. A straight-up memoir or a direct look at the issues would have worked probably better than the mix.

That aside - there are thoughtful views on a range of key issues and challenges related to technology and its use, and these are well worth taking the time to read and reflect on.

Notes to yourself

Dr Jordan Nguyen is truly an incredible person.
His outlook and purpose for life "one life persist to improve many"
Great way to learn the basics of Machine Learning, Artificial Intelligence, and Virtual Realities. It's amazing reading it currently with all the improvements and technology that currently exists like chat gpt. It would be incredible to know his opinions and use of this. I see it immensely assisting the idea of category 3 avatars.
This has made me want to be a better person, to question, is what I am doing helping the world. Materials is so broad and can be so good, I deserve to be choosy with my precious resource - time - and my life.
From humble beginnings to what you are now, you are truly an inspiration.
Olivia you should definitely reread this, maybe annotate, make notes as you go 😂

Not my usual subject matter, but really interesting to hear what Jordan has achieved and what can be done with artificial intelligence. I love how he is always putting the human aspect of AI first.

I have always said information technology (IT) is about people, but Dr Jordan enlightens you with possibilities as to how it can be even more humanistic right now and in the future.
