My relationship with Cole isn’t a simple one. It’s complicated, frustrating and, at times, downright ugly. You see, I fell for a man who couldn’t love me back.
Hard as I tried to avoid the dimpled prince of Seattle, life threw us together. As much as I resisted temptation, he burrowed his way into my heart. Sinful as our attraction was, our destinies were entwined.
But don’t worry. Ours is a love story after all. I had no idea how our fairytale would play out, but one thing I knew for certain?
Fate had a twisted sense of humor, and she did not play fair.
****
Nat King Cole. That’s what they called us. Natalie was the sunshine in my gloomy existence, but she wasn’t mine. We were friends at best. At least, that’s what we told ourselves.
Hard as I tried to stay away from the vibrant city girl, life shoved us together. She was out of reach, but lived under my skin and haunted my dreams. Despite the unshakable attraction, we never crossed the line.
You might say our relationship was a test of fidelity. And doing the right thing had never been more challenging. We may have toyed with destiny, but for damn sure…
Krissy Daniels is the author of Average Joe, the Truck Stop Series, L.O.V.E., How To Kill Your Boss, and the Apotheosis Series. Krissy is a writer by night and a sales admin by day. She lives in Seattle with her husband and too many four-legged, furry monsters. The only thing she loves more than curling up with a steamy romance novel is cozying up to her desk and writing her own sexy adventures to share with others.
What in the hot and crispy Kentucky Fried f*ck is this f*ckery? JFC, what did I just read - and why is there not a single review somewhere that addresses how weirdly f*cked up this story was? Are people that blind? Or is it just that they are being paid that well to post such glowing feedback?
Full review to come later. I'm going to bed.
~~~~~ Updated 11 July 2020
These days I try to choose books that are KU only because it doesn't involve my having to shell out any more than the $10/month I pay for membership. And it's not that I'm cheap, it's that finding a good read anymore is like Russian Roulette and taking a chance on a book and buying only to wind up hating it is not okay with me.
I bought this book with little reservation based on the blurb. It intrigued me by hinting at being the type of angsty, push-pull, unrequited love story that I just can't resist. It had a promising start, but right away the story veered from unique to cliché in many areas. And also into straight up weirdness and hypocrisy in others.
Straightforward, this book is about Natalie and Cole who meet and share an instant connection, but Cole is engaged to be married and so even though the reader knows the story will focus on their journey, for storyline purposes Cole's engagement is a pretty insurmountable hurdle. He is in love with his fiancée, and he is not a cheater. And neither is Natalie a girl who will go after someone who is taken, despite her heart's conviction that he is 'the One.' So, so far, so good.
Handled properly, this could have been a cracking good read. It had a good premise. But in order for it to work a few things needed to exist first. A writer needs to have a basic understanding of human nature and to be able to create characters that are consistent. They also need to know those characters inside and out and continually ask themselves if a particular character's behaviour and actions are true to who they really are. The heroine wasn't too bad here - for a change - but this is one instance where the writer should have stuck to the sole POV of the heroine because Cole? Oh my life, what an example of poor characterisation. This guy was all over the place, and not in a way that would seem believable given the situation. He came off as sanctimonious, stupid and at times, unstable. I needed him to be worthy of the love Natalie had for him and he just wasn't.
An unpleasant note early on was the writer's inexplicable choice to attribute Cole's stance on fidelity to religion. I'm agnostic and don't love it when religious doctrine finds its way into a story, but in this case I found it very offensive. Agnostic I may be, but I was also raised in the Catholic church, so I know a few things. You can't pick and choose what part of religion suits you and discard what doesn't. It's not right to cling to your beliefs about infidelity being a 'sin' based on your upbringing in a church-going home while engaging in premarital sex - which is also a sin. Getting drunk is a sin, too. As is lust. If you're having those feelings and allowing them to take hold while you're promised to another, it's a huge red flag in more ways than one. Dishonesty is also 'sinful,' and that includes being dishonest with oneself.
I'm sure the intent in the emphasis on fidelity was to paint Cole as a noble, honourable man but he came off as a sanctimonious hypocrite in addition to being none too bright. Instead of making his fiancée Victoria a real, relatable person the writer chose to go the route of the caricature of a 'mean girl' - the erstwhile high school bully of the heroine. But she was terribly one-dimensional and her OTT past actions were basically hearsay because she never interacted with the heroine in the present. Cole's bff was dating Nat's bff and Nat had begun to date another mutual friend, so they were all together quite often, but there was never a real interaction between Natalie and Victoria. We just heard how horrible she was.
It bears mentioning that nobody liked Cole's fiancée. But even after he learned what a monster she was and with all the signs she was cheating on him literally flashing over her head he ignored it all. Because cheating was 'sinful' and he wasn't a cheater. Because he believed he loved a woman that he lived with, yet she was never home. One who always had an excuse to get out of spending time together and no longer wanted to have sex. She would disappear at the same time as one of his mates - who smoked - and come back smelling of booze and cigarettes. She even claimed that everyone hated her. None of these things tipped Cole off that he was being made a fool of. It didn't even seem to anger him that this woman he wanted to marry had repeatedly bullied Natalie. And this wasn't harmless stuff but vicious, physically and mentally scarring acts. Victoria was damn near a psychopath and this guy was too holier-than-thou (thick in the head) to see it. And I got so sick of his fidelity bullshit I wanted to cut someone.
And for the record, you can NOT commit adultery if you ARE. NOT. MARRIED!!! That is a fact and the Bible substantiates it, proof for any religious types out there. Anyway, in my opinion, unless people are bound by a vow cheating and infidelity are subjective. Actual adultery is a whole other species and didn't exist here. Please, writers, know your facts.
The problems with this story were multitude. As in the majority of this genre of late the writer treats sex and love as the same thing. I saw plenty of lust and sex between Cole and Natalie, but what I didn't see was a connection. I didn't see soulmates. I didn't see any reason they should be together. Cole never put Natalie first, even after believing so long that she was his soulmate and the whole truth came out about Victoria and he dumped her. Even after they finally acted on their feelings, he wound up marrying VICTORIA after she told him she was pregnant. Mind you, they hadn't had sex in months and she claimed they had done so on a night he was passed out drunk. How convenient. But dumbarse that Cole was, he never questioned it and even FORGAVE HER for torturing his supposed 'soulmate' - who she had actually been stalking and threatening again, it turned out. He fucking MARRIED the cow because he was so 'honourable' and claimed to still love her. WHAT. the fuck. He totally was TSTL.
And what fucking century are we living in that he HAD to marry her to do the right thing?? He owed her nothing and was too thick to see she'd been cheating for months with a man he considered a brother!
I really think the writer knew she was in over her head here because at around the halfway point Victoria and the OM were taken out of the equation when they were killed in an accident. But even though she stole a huge amount of money from him and was killed with her lover after running away to be with him and he knew that she'd cheated with his friend for months, he mourned her! He felt guilty for her death, that it happened because he'd been unfaithful 'in his mind' 🙄 - and then he just went completely off the rails and blamed NATALIE. And it wasn't believable or even understandable and it's one of the reasons I mentioned human nature. His reactions to everything were inconsistent and along with the way he acted were nothing like a real person. He made no sense and was just really unstable and not worthy of the hero role.
So, the book was kind of a mess. It floors me that as yet there is no mention of at least the more obvious flaws with it. In addition to what I pointed out, there is too much drama that didn't move the story or even benefit it. A gang shooting at a club. A stalker ex - yeah Natalie is sooo speshul that she gets TWO stalkers. The way Victoria was killed was even too much, driving off a cliff and crashing into the ocean. Really? 😑
The book was poorly edited. No surprise there. And there was an unfortunate tendency for repetitive use of silly adjectives for Natalie. Instead of thinking of her as 'Natalie' she was 'the little temptress' or 'the little seductress' 🤮🤮, which was unfair because she wasn't like that at all and was actually an okay character - her choice in men notwithstanding. But she was also 'the little firecracker,' 'the little this,' 'the little that,' over and over and over. It was an irritating distraction. Also, the story was choppy as hell, particularly around big dramatic scenes. The scene would end in a strange place only to resume days or weeks later. Or something major would happen and the story would pick up after the fact. Lots of telling here instead of showing and the story often didn't flow well at all.
So, take your pick. The eejit hero who chooses a monster over his soul mate. The religion-based hypocrisy in a clearly secular - and quite frankly erotic - romance novel. The inexplicable extra drama and abruptly shifting scenes because either the talent or simply the desire to properly write them was missing. The amateurish abuse of adjectives. Or how about the central issue, which was the utter lack of chemistry between the leads. I look at the initial reviews and wonder what the hell everyone else read because it couldn't have been the same book. But maybe someone will read this review and will save themselves $3.99. It's not the amount that matters. It's the principle of the thing, and this story was not worth paying even that small amount.
The cover looks nice and promising etc but after reading my friend Ellie's review, I believe I would have thrown my Kindle at the wall if I had tried to read it.
Disclosure: I received this book for free through a giveaway.
First, I want to praise the editors as the number of typographic mistakes I noticed could be counted on one hand. I have notes if the author wants to make the corrections. I am a little weird that way. So many books these days are littered with errors which detract from the reading experience, so I definitely appreciated that about the book.
Secondly, because I could really enjoy the book, I did. The author has a way of weaving lives together. There is already a lot of praise for the main characters, so rather than reiterate what others have been saying, I want to extoll how nice it was to have a strong cast of secondary characters. Even though the story was not told from their points of view, they were just as "alive" as the mains, and each had their own distinctive personality and drive.
Finally, this story kept me on my toes. Romance stories tend to follow set a set plot and be predictable, but not this one. Just when I thought I had it figured out, it took a turn and knocked me down. The romance had me reading the story, but the suspense had me glued to the pages until the very end.
Quiero empezar diciendo que este libro me quitó el bloqueo lector que tenía desde hace 4 meses, muy cliché la parte en que Victoria anda con el amigo de Cole, y sobretodo que solo lo hace para molestar a Nat, pero con todo y sus clichés me pareció bueno.
There are regular times in my life, when I don't realize I need a certain book until it's in my hands. Some books we seek out because we are attracted to them and others fall in our laps without question. This contemporary romance fell into my lap last week and I ate it up in one day of reading. It reads quickly and has a lot of drama, longing for love, and pain that draws you right in.
We have our main characters Natalie King and Cole Adams.
Natalie is a self-motivator, trying to prove to herself that she can do things on her own and is building her career in banking. Her life focuses around being with her family, her best friend Lucy, and her career. When the book first starts, she is working on separating from her long-term, aggressive boyfriend that's a narcissistic nutcase.
Then we have Cole Adams. The handsome (albeit rich), quiet man standing at the counter of the coffee shop where Natalie is and when their eyes meet, the air charges and they both immediately feel like they know each other from somewhere. This was the biggest element that tied the entire storyline together - fated lovers that could never be together. While Cole and Natalie can feel fate continuing to pull them together, Cole is engaged and in love with Natalie's former high school enemy.
Things are incredibly complicated as Cole's friend starts to date Natalie's best friend and they find themselves constantly brought together. But the part I loved most about this story was the continued focus on fate and destiny. It tore their hearts apart each time they saw the other with someone else, because they just knew they were meant to be together. The author does an amazing job by keeping infidelity out of the story, no one cheats on their partners, which lends even more to the heart breaking outcomes.
There are a few really hot sex scenes, lots of bad language, but the book focuses mostly on the entwined love destiny of our main characters. A moving romance novel I'd recommend to any of my romance reading friends!
I've read some of Krissy's other books and I really LOVE (hah!) this book the most. The story between Cole and Natalie kept me turning the pages figuring out what would happen at the end. I finished this in less than 2 days. I would encourage you to read this not conventional love story (or any of Krissy's books) because you will get hooked. This is not my genre of choice, but after reading Truck Stop Tango, Krissy's books have made it into my TBR pile and I was excited she was releasing a new book this year! You can feel her passion when she is writing and she has become a favorite of mine. Give this story a shot! You will NOT be disappointed!
Also, can I just say that the negative haters (Ellie) clearly have nothing better to do than just sit here and bash on authors saying that they paid for positive reviews, really? Let's see you write a book, i'll make sure to be the first in line to read and review it. Gotta love bully's on the internet. Constructive criticism is one thing, being a jerk is another. Get outta here with that negative BS.
I’m giving this book 4 stars because the story had some really unique parts, I liked that they never cheated even though they were meant to be, and I LOVED Natalie. That being said, Cole was the most clueless guy I’ve ever read in a book. And not just clueless, but dumb. After everything he knew, he still did something he didn’t have to. He ended up redeeming himself, and a friend said she thought it was refreshing to have a guy be a TSTL character when I told her the story, so there’s that. I’d read another book by the author, because she writes a great heroine. Plus, THAT COVER!
Sinceramente no sé ni que opinar. Este libro tenía más drama que todas las dizis turcas juntas. Sabía que iba a ser un forbidden love, pero me esperaba la angustia de otra manera no tan dramática. Él se tenía que haber arrastrado bastante más por ella después de ciertas cosas que hizo. Y cuando se supone que ya pueden estar juntos mete más drama y solo están juntos las últimas páginas, sin escenas shippeables ni clichés y para colmo sin un epílogo tiempo después. Lo único bueno el "destino" de que estuviesen juntos. Conclusión el protagonista hizo bastantes cosas que no me gustaron cuando se suponía que ya podían estar juntos.
The story starts out fairly cutesy, a normal romance novel. But it very quickly dives into topics like domestic violence, harassment, and standing up for others at personal consequence that aren’t normal found in romance. It was refreshing to see characters have to fight for a relationship rather than be handed a perfect happily ever after.
I just feel …… I do not know about this book. There were parts I really liked, but the way Cole was written, he came across as a moron when it came to his best friend. The clues were written out clearly, I solved that mystery right from the start.
The book had a lot of steam to it, some of it unnecessary, but to each their own!
Emmm wtf, tengo mucho y nada q decir, estuvo normal, 0 química para 2 personas q eran "almas gemelas" todo el asunto con Victoria y el 0 empatico con ella, ayyy no q mal me cae el, la seguía pero solo era para mantenerla enganchada porque solo la quiso hasta que supo lo de su amigo y ella de tonta, lo peor es que dejó todo por el 2 veces xD
I am so glad I got the opportunity to read those book, Nat and Cole's love story was sweet , I did not get frustrated with the characters like I sometimes do with other books. Fell in love with them. Good read!!!
* I received an advance reader copy in exchange for an honest review *
Wow I can barely put into words how I am feeling after finishing this book. This is my first-time reading Krissy Daniels and I am officially a fan! This book had my feelings all over the place but the amount of anguish I felt for Cole and Natalie was overwhelming.
I had never felt more coveted. Ever. Not through words, touch, actions. Especially not from the way someone looked at me. And that man studied me like I was the answer to all his questions.
I cannot say I have fell for a person at first sight but that is exactly what happened with Cole and Natalie. The moment they looked at each other they knew that there was something special. To have that kind of connection with a person only to find out you could not be with them is truly devastating. That would be bad enough but of course their best friends fall in love and now they are stuck being around each other.
”I had no right wanting him. I never should have befriended him. I told myself that I was doing it for Lacey. But that was a lie.”
It really broke my heart knowing how guilty Cole felt about his feelings for Natalie knowing he cannot act on them. He was really in a horrible position, but he did not stray and stayed faithful. It was bad enough they could not be together but for Natalie to find out it was because of her enemy made it so much worse. We knew some of what Victoria had done but she really took it to another level.
”Tell me you know why I’m here.” “Tell me you’ve wanted this since that day in the coffee shop.” “Tell me I’m not alone.”
Every time I thought I had an idea of what was going on in this story it was like a new twist appeared. So many things happen in this book I felt like I was on a rollercoaster of emotions. I was on the edge of my seat the whole time and devoured this book in one sitting. Krissy drew me so far into the story that my heart was breaking for them as if I were a part of it. Amazing job Krissy Daniels!
Sweet emotional anguish! What a beautiful soulmates romance this is. Two souls bound at birth and finding each other at the wrong time with their insta love/lust. Nat King Cole Adams. Beautiful lovers caught in a moment and then caught in a terrible situation. He's not free and neither of them are cheaters. But they're thrown together when their best friends fall in love. Avoidance is not an option. Oh, the anguish is heightened when Cole's fiancé turns out to be Nat's moral enemy. The emotional drama is turned up but Cole and Natalie stay strong even when their hearts are shredded by their forced distance. Such wonderful characters and their heart-wrenching love is palatable as the story unfolds with major drama around Cole's fiancé and his friend and Nat's unrelenting stalker. Not a real surprise in the treachery that is uncovered but the mystery of Nat's stalker unfolds with suspense and danger. I was surprised by this story and the depth of the emotion and beautiful love between Natalie and Cole. Wonderfully written with fabulous characters and a lovely friends and family feel to the story. This is my first read from this author but it won't be my last. Her writing pulled me in with the heartfelt romance and outstanding characters. Loved it! I voluntarily reviewed an ARC.
"L.O.V.E." by Krissy Daniels took me by surprise in the very best of ways and I loved it more than I ever could have anticipated. Based on the story's beginning, I was expecting it to be a cute, sweet, and fluffy read, but instead, it quickly turned into an angsty, engrossing rollercoaster that gave me all the feels. I read most of the book in one sitting, constantly on the edge of my seat, just waiting to see what would happen next.
I'm not a big believer in fate or love at first sight, but even I had to admit that it seemed like fate had a hand in bringing the main characters of this story, Natalie and Cole, together. They still had plenty of obstacles standing in the way of their relationship, and at times it seemed as if those obstacles just might be insurmountable. That said, both Cole and Natalie were very likeable, well-developed characters, and I appreciated how hard they both tried to do the right thing even when their hearts were pulling them in a different direction.
I highly recommend "L.O.V.E." for all fans of emotional contemporary romance and will be waiting with great anticipation to see what Krissy Daniels writes next.
Fate & Destiny... That's what was written in the stars for Natalie King and Cole Adams. Born in the same hospital on the same day the two were meant to be together...
Fast forward years later and Nat sees Cole in a coffee shop... she's never been so drawn to someone. But fate and destiny has thrown in hurdles and obstacles in their path testing them. Cole is with someone else, and Nat is freshly out of a bad relationship, and to make matters worse Cole's girlfriend is the one person who tormented Nat throughout her childhood.
Drawn to each other, but unable to do anything about it Nat and Cole try to have an amicable relationship and when that doesn't work they avoid each other. When their paths cross the chemistry is palpable - but the timing is wrong. When Nat King Cole finally get a chance it's ripped away just as quickly and Cole ends up marrying someone else.
But Fate and Destiny have already set their paths on alignment, even their mothers knew it all those years ago in the hospital when they were born.
Love... Fate... Destiny. That's what this beautifully tragic love story was about. A decent read, enjoyable.
Krissy Daniels is a new to me author, and HOLY HELL! She's an emotional terrorist LOL! This story really tried to kill me with overpowering emotions along the way. Nat & Cole were friends who were supposed to be together, though they never acted on it to the point. He's not free, and neither are cheaters so what are they to do when fate is going to do what fate wants to?! What makes this situation even more tragic is the fact that the woman he's tied to is her worst enemy, and quite (insert colorful metaphors here) horrible person. So there's all this angst when it takes ANOTHER turn! The twists are coming in hot, since danger is stalking Nat, making me very anxious while I was on the edge of my seat trying to figure things out between f-bomb dropping. I could say so much more about this fantastic story, but I figure it's better for everyone to just hit those one click buttons to experience it all for themselves instead of reading a long review! So in conclusion, I HIGHLY HIGHLY HIGHLY RECOMMEND TO ALL!
Oh my goodness... this book has so much angst and so much love!! It's been a really long time I've read a book with this much romantic drama.
Imagine if Corinne Michaels and A.L. Jackson got together and had a book baby? That's this book. I've never read Krissy, so I wasn't sure what to expect. I was definitely pleasantly surprised! I was lucky to have won an audio code for this book and between the authors talented writing and the incredible narration, I had a serious book hungover after this one.
First I have to stay I'm totally girl crushing Kelsey's narration(but not surprised since she's an amazing voice actor). She constantly and consistently blows me away with her range of emotions and has cracked my top 5 female narrators!
Now for Neill Thorne, who's fairly new to me, and I'm not going to lie, I'm full on in love with his voice in this book!
L.O.V.E. is so much more than a romance... it's about faith, fate, soul mates, forever friendships. So much to love about this story, and if you love drawn out angst, run and download this audio!!
This my first time reading a book written by Krissy Daniels. And I must say that she took me by surprise. The story, even from just the blurb itself, made me captivated from the get-go. Cole and Nat were such intriguing characters that you can't just help but empathize with them.
I thought that it was just some romantic love at first sight type of story. So I was pleasantly surprised when it turned out to be an angsty and emotional rollercoaster of a love story. The story has complicated relationships and friendships. You get that raw and emotional feeling of being torn between rooting for these two characters and also wanting them to do the right thing at the same time.
Overall, I'm very impressed with the way Krissy Daniels has written this book. It had the right pacing and the perfect blend of angst and romance that will leave you very satisfied in the end. I'm looking forward to reading more of her upcoming books!
I expected a quick and cute read but I was (happily) disappointed with L.O.V.E. This novel sucks you right in from the get-go. You think you can't take it seriously but then it throws you for a couple twists and turns that you completely don't expect. Left with the 'now what' feeling at about halfway through the book, you really wonder where this story can go. I loved that Nat and Cole don't have an easy love story. I loved that their story was tumultuous and hard because it made it that much more rewarding when fate finally shows its final hand. There's a lot of depth for one to get pulled in and really feel with the characters and the story was riveting, though at points, unbelievable. You really love as much as the characters do and hate as much as the characters do. Great read, highly recommend.
Instead of saying I loved this book which would be predictable I'll start by saying it surprised me and hooked me hard from the start. All the characters except "them" (you'll know exactly who) were someone you'd want to have as a friend and two (but one specifically) that you'd want as way more. To put that this friendship is complicated is an understatement but it becomes obvious from the start that it won't stay that way. It hits all the senses and has a few surprises along the way. Funny and sexy with a hit or two of reality. Is definitely on my read again list. I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review.
Krissy Daniels is a new to me author that pulled me into her story, I will be going back and reading more of her work. L.O.V.E was a fast paced read that pulls you in, you will fall in love with these characters.
Natalie and Cole are perfect for each other, but the timing isn’t right. This book really pulled at my heartstrings. The things these characters go through have you hoping in the end they will end up with who they are supposed to. Natalie and Cole are tested and try to do the right the thing, it’s hard when your feelings are so intense. This was a great story of soulmates and I loved every minute of it.
I gotta say, this book was everything and nothing like I expected. I could not put it down once I started it and did not want it to end when I got there!
An utterly engaging story-line that grabs you right from the start, keeping you engrossed throughout.
