When Winter Comes #1

The First Fall

Rate this book
The sky is bleeding. The storm has come.
A crimson rift washes over the isolated Alaskan town of Denridge Hills, staining the Aurora Borealis the color of blood. To some, an unlikely occurrence. To those in the know, a sign of dark magic at play. When the storm has completed its devastation, who will be left standing?

A social media mogul holds the fate of her ex-lover in her hands. A high school student finds himself miles from home, his constitution and willpower put to the test. A researcher searches for his nephew, his knowledge of the town’s local history the only lead toward ending the madness.

When the world shrinks around you, the monsters come, and all that’s left is an unbending will to survive, who will emerge as the true heroes, and who will be marked as the villains?
"The First Fall" is the first tale in the serialized apocalyptic horror, "When Winter Comes," with new episodes released monthly.

This book sucked me in from the beginning, it's like a puzzle, and every character is a piece, and the more you read the more the pieces fit together and you get a beautiful picture, only this picture is more gruesome ...
What can I say except that I loved this story, the characters are interesting, they all have their strengths and weaknesses and not a lot of writers make me feel sad for a character in the first chapter.
Then we have the world, I think it is most fitting to describe this in his own words: "The country, the ambience, the very setting is a character in itself." This is a great quote from the book and it isn't the only one in there.
I can't wait to read the other books in the series and I would highly recommend this book.

Great start to the series. Lots of intrigue and mystery, and filled with interesting characters.

I also loved the setting where this takes place - beautiful, harsh and inescapable :)

🍷The First Fall is the first episode of "When Winter Comes", after reading the very first episode I just can't wait to read the next episodes and also the prequel. This is definitely one of those books that play with your mind and you don't even know it, it's spine chilling, breathtaking and a heart fastening read. Willcocks plays with horror and apocalyptic elements in a way that they haunt you from morning till night, once you pick it, I am sure you won't be able to stop reading or keep it down.

The way he weaves horror and mystery from the very first page made me fall in love with not just creepy characters but also the isolated Alaskan hills the story dwells in. I am in love with choice of premise and can't get out of his story, this is a must read for all the horror fans and for people who need a twisted horror tale. The book is so much more than the blurb depicts, his writing is truly addictive. So, hold your breath and get ready for a all day night mare! Can't wait to see what happens next! Definitely recommended.

From the moment I picked up The First Fall I couldn't put it down. The characters are so real they seep off the page and their emotions and actions rip through the reader. From the primal lust of a woman for a mountain man to the timid thoughts of a teenage boy with a crush, the cast was diverse and well written. The undertone of danger seethed through the story through every event from a torrid affair to a simple basketball game. Every minute action threatened to turn into something horrific. The entire story is soaked in raw horror...the kind of terror that has the reader clenching their teeth and seizing their skull as they cling to every word. Even the setting and the weather drip terror from a bleeding aurora to a storm that can freeze any mans bones. This story is for the reader who loves a deep connection with characters, a nail biting turn of events on every page, and a prickle that crawls up the spine. Please read this book, you will be doing yourself a favor.

Just as Raymond Chandler could use a few well-chosen phrases to put you into the heart of Los Angeles, so can Daniel Willcocks place you into the Alaskan wilderness. I am not usually a big fan of modern horror stories, but took this one in on a recommendation and I am glad I did. He manages to take the banalest elements and make them come alive in a unique way; early on there is a scene that occurs in every story, a breakup between a married man and his paramour, but in Mr. Willcock's hands it seems as if you are peeking out of the closet door, it is so real. When I was reading the descriptions of the Alaskan cold, I found myself lacing out the window to ensure that I was in 80-degree summer weather, not really there.

If you are a fan of horror stories, this is one of the most well-written ones I have ever read. Even if you are not, I recommend you try this one just for the high quality of the writing.

Daniel Willcocks has done it again.
His world building skills are truly remarkable and the characters feel so real I felt like I was actually there.
Each person has a different trait and they way they interact with each other is simply fantastic.
As the tension builds, I can actually feel my emotions change and the hairs prickling on the back of my neck... I can’t wait to read book 2

Definitely worth the money :)

Right from the beginning, the tension builds. Great characterisation and enjoyable pacing make it a pleasure to read as you immerse yourself in the world created, the action and the horror. As a reader, you can't help feeling you are the edge of something really epic. I can't wait to see how the series and the apocalyptic world develops.

Not bad

A glimpse that the book is a Horror story in the first chapter, then not much more until about 60% through the book.

Really wish the book had centered just on the creatures. The kids were boring and unneeded in the story.

Story definitely became interesting at the end!

I would recommend this book.

it would seem, the reader is just following the charaters around within the story. Then, things start to happen, while the reader is left with very few clues to go on. The story, ends and leaves the reader with many questions. I hope that the next in the series is a little better. Overall, it's not a bad read, lots of mystery than there is of horror.

The First Fall... how appropriate, gave me the incentive to want to fall for the others in this series. I am waiting patiently for the next in this story. Dan Willcocks has created some memorable characters.

They are coming out from the woods. They will kill you. With sneak peeks, no one really can describe them. All anyone knows is that there’s evil coming to town. I can’t wait to read the next installment!!

This first installment in the serial sets the scene for what's to come, introducing us to a cast of characters, their relationships, and the town of Denridge itself, cranking up the sense of isolation, before introducing us to the threat. I have the distinct impression that the series is only going to get better from here as the real action begins to unfold.

Started off seeming pretty generic but it free me in and the ending made reading part two a must.

This is honestly a five star book. Im so bummed that the author is a fatphobic jerk. I removed a star for every five mentions of fatphobia. Reader beware.

It was fine I just didn't expect that ending for the first book of the series. It took so long to get to that part.
