This is book three in the Desolation series and sees the main character Jenn, having finally moved into an empty house near Maria and Gary. It has only been some eight weeks since the nuclear bombings ended Jenn is now working as security for the Beaumont’s farm and even though the shifts are quite long, she is starting to enjoy it. She has made friends with Val, who lost her whole family and became a soldier, killing many of the people she blamed for their deaths. She speaks little of it and doesn’t want Jenn to become used to it like she has. She has other people who are also becoming good friends, as she works closely with them every day or night. Flagstaff has seen its number of residents increase by a few thousands as lots of refugees made it there after the bombs fell and their own cities became warzones. The town’s Mayor Andrews allowed them to enter, but there are those who believe they are taking food from their own families.
The other large landowner, Vincent Grierson, lost his wife when the refugees arrived and he has never forgiven them for that. He has started an organisation called CFF, which wants all of the refugees removed from Flagstaff and sent to the refugee camp at New River, which is overcrowded, low on supplies and also being overrun with disease and illness. There are many in Flagstaff that believe the same as Grierson and he is using his son Phillip to carry out his plans to cause more tension and violence between the groups. A lot of the refugees have already offered themselves up to work, in any way, to help feed everyone and to offer security, whereas a lot of residents are simply relying on the city’s free food rations. Opinions are becoming heated and any little spark could cause violence to break out and the death of many to occur, tearing the fragile peace apart for ever.
If people don’t work together, for the survival of all, then humanity will fail. A sneak attack leaves a well-loved person dead and is just the start of one man’s plan for revenge. Jenn and others will find themselves at the sharp end of tall the action, as they try to stop this violence before it can spread any further and the refugees, some already friends, are picked upon and more people, from either side, will die. A great look at how simple it is for democracy to fall into chaos when evil is plotted against innocents and not enough people try to head it off before it grows unmanageable! Quick read with lots happening, but also friendships and love growing under difficult circumstances. A few more books to come in this series and I can’t wait to see what will happen to the main characters next. I received an ARC copy of this book from the author and I have freely given my own opinion of the book above.
