Welcome to Tervia, a land of forgotten histories, ancient magic, foul beasts, and heroes in all shapes and sizes.

Follow the stories of myriad characters, from a fearless general faced with a terrible choice, to a peasant girl fighting to keep her family alive.

Lose yourself in this epic fantasy world which unravels with each story and draws you deeper and deeper. By the end, you'll never want to leave.

Fans of high fantasy, epic fantasy, low fantasy, urban fantasy and grimdark will love the stories that make up the Tales of Tervia.

Readers of Joe Abercrombie and George R.R. Martin will appreciate the gritty realism of Richie Billing's writing, yet at times it possesses a light-hearted and humorous touch akin to the works of James Barclay and Nicholas Eames. And for those who adore the coming of age heroes of Brandon Sanderson and Patrick Rothfuss, you'll find characters that will whisk you away on epic journeys of discovery, intrigue, friendship and love.

A single-author anthology of grimdark fantasy & horror shorts

I read the first story as a reading magnet - I quite liked the Brothers Grimm (the movie) vibe. 12 kids are taken in the village of Grog, so 2 monster hunters are called in. It’s a grimdark horrorish fairytale, so not all sunshine and daisies. (Ron from HP would have kittens over meeting the giant arachnid.) There were lots of references to other characters and places, so it seemed like a scene from a larger book, but it didn’t detract from enjoyment of the story.

Didn’t get past the first one, though, as the writing style is a tad too high epic for my taste (epic & horror are my 2 least fave genres) and such sets are teaser tasters, aren’t they? This doesn’t mean someone else who absolutely loves epic fantasy bordering on horror might not find these stories fascinating.

I just finished reading each and every short story of the tales of Tervia and found the book refreshing as it possessed a different message from story to story, wether it be treachery, savagery, cruelty, prey on the innocent or the amazing courage of a 90 years old woman who is both terrified and physically restricted but, in the end, finds the strenght to make the ultimate sacrifice for a family composed of a certain number of people do not deserve her.

However, I am aware that a short story is supposed to be short and I have read my fair share of those, but, in this case, I as a reader cannot feel but that there is something missing in the end. Each tale leaves me with the same conclusion.

The stories are good and the author has the gift to imagine and write them, no question. So maybe he writes them and imagines the plots so brilliantly that the reader is left with wondering:"
What happened to this or that character in the end?". I know I was.

For these reasons, i rate the book 4 Stars

I just finished reading Richie Billing's compilation of high fantasy short stories set in the world of Tervia.
They're a medly of stories that explore life on the streets of Low Town, river boat clans, guilds of monster hunters known as the Magpies and a good ol' fishin' tale.
I enjoyed all these stories, and recommend this buy to anyone who wants to escape into another world for a while, and have fun doing it.
I look forward to reading Billing's debut full length novel 'Pariah's Lament'. Only a few more down on my TBR list!

Rich storytelling, an immersive world

Each tale brings a separate kind of flutter to my heart as I turn the pages. The storytelling is so good and the characters riveting. I’m not sure which is my favorite but I might have to settle on elderly nana whose remembered love helped her find bravery in her last twilight.
