Matilda Donner - Tilly to her friends - was a reporter for the Tri-Town Times, a monthly local paper, and was recovering from the shock of her husband leaving her for another woman. Tilly was woken by loud explosions one night to discover her neighbour's shed was burning and another neighbour's nectarine orchard was burning fiercely. When she joined Mr York, whose shed was burning, she discovered fireworks stored inside had caught alight. The following morning Tilly again went to Mr York's home to check on him, only to discover him outside, and taking his last breaths.

As Tilly interviewed people for the paper, trying to learn more about the fire and the murder, she soon developed several theories. But taking the theories to the sheriff found her in the spotlight for the murder. Could she and her two friends uncover the killer before Tilly was arrested?

News and Nectarines is the 1st in the Tri-Town Murders by Carly Winter and at the start I found Tilly to be quite immature for her 30+ years, though she did grow on me by the end. There are a number of typos that should have been edited out, but it was a cute cosy mystery which I enjoyed well enough. A good start to a series which I'll probably continue.

News and Nectarines is the first book in the Tri-Town Murders series by Carly Winter. The MC is a female reporter for the Tri-Town Times, Matilda Donner, otherwise known as Tilly, who gets involved simply due to proximity. Her neighbor, Mr. York was storing illegal fireworks in his shed, when the accidental fire / possibly arson started, resulting in his death.

Tasked with writing up the story, she goes into reporter mode and begins an investigation of the facts. Investigation leads to inquiry, inquiry to interviews, interviews to red herring narratives and possible results. As she gathers information, theories form inside her mind, and she makes the mistake of sharing the data with the sheriff before thorough scrutiny. Of course, the sheriff is annoyed that she has numerous leads way before he has even begun to investigate so her credibility is questioned, and she is even listed as a possible suspect.

The story is a fast-paced, cozy, mystery with really good characters. The narrative is well-written. There are several editing issues, but still a very good read.

Not bad. Not as good as it could be. It's not so annoying that I knew whodunit early; the story evolved nicely, but I am annoyed by typos and simple research errors.

In the US, we have an Air Force. Other countries may have an Airforce, but we don't. And Barksdale AFB is in Bossier City, not Bosser City. Are these errors or simple typos? Both are annoying. It's obvious Winter has no connection with the military; loss of "part of" a thumb is not a serious enough injury to get you medically retired. It might get you returned to duty, or discharged with VA benefits.

Tilly complains about the mail sorting, and mentions she hasn't received personal mail in a few days. Later she remarks on a large stack that perhaps she should check her mailbox more often. Which is it? The plot line with the mail is quite convoluted for what it actually accomplishes.

Yeah, this is an okay read for a rainy afternoon, but it's nothing special.

Tilly is the only reporter for a small town newspaper. When her neighbor’s fireworks (illegal for 20 years due to the town burning down) go off and burn her other neighbors nectarine orchard, Tillie is determined to figure out how this happened. Her boss has her interviewing the people in town to get their experience of the fire. And then the neighbor is stabbed and tells her the murderer and the person setting off the fireworks are one and the same, but no name before he dies. The problem is there are too many suspects, and the Sheriff is not impressed with her investigation and information! The funniest part had to do with Tilly’s clumsiness - I never knew how she would hurt herself next! Fun read.

This book is a lovely and easy read with a murder of which I didn't immediately see the culprit, so that's a plus for me!

Tilly is a loveable character who is doing her best to get over her divorce while building a new life for herself.
I loved the relationship between Tilly and her (new) friends as they grow and they help each other find the murderer.

The conclusion of the book came right at the end with a small cliffhanger which I will not divulge to avoid spoilers.
Overall, I liked reading this book and will sure look for more from this author.

Tilly finds big potholes in the road to solving her first murder

Tilly, her dog Tinker and cat Belle, live in a large farmhouse that she and Tommy had bought. When doctors told her she would never have children unless they adopted, Tommy left her for a waitress he'd gotten pregnant. She is awakened one night by fireworks going off next door and starting a fire in the nectarine grove of another neighbor. The next morning she finds the dying man's body and thus begins her search for the truth. A very good story. Looking forward to the next book.

Cute cozy mystery about a small town newspaper reporter. The characters are all quirky and the antics are fun. First book in a series and will definitely read those as well.

Funny cozy

I really enjoyed this cozy. I thought it was funny that aTilly said she wasn't going to investigate the murder and let the police do their job. Yet solving the murder was exactly what Tilly did. I didn't figure out who the killer was until Tilly did as well.

When I first started reading this book I disliked the main character Tilly Donner. She was a reporter for the local newspaper. she was 37 years old, divorced and eating because she was "depressed" and she was a klutz. She was contantly tripping and falling over things and hurting herself. She was quite frankly, the epitome of a dumb blonde!!!

In fact in the very first chapter she hit her head on the night stand and cracked her nose against the door - this was at 0100 hours in the morning. apprently some fireworks had been deliberately set off and they had burnt down the nectarine orchard. Tillys house was just outside of town, in a somewhat rural area. Right next to the orchard.

Anyway the fireworks and the burning of the orchard was the start of this mystery. Also that same night Tilly discovered one of her neighbours (Henry York) dying of a stab wound to the torso. She called the police.

Tillys 2 best friends are Debbie who runs the local cafe and Carla who runs a mexican eatery in the next town over. Debbie was also the town gossip. Between the three of them they find 5 suspects who might have killed poor Mr York. Each new suspect is duly given to the police to look into. Tilly had previously dated the Deputy sheriff and was now trying to get him off her back because he was still interested in her. She was no lomger interested in him.

Thanks to her reporting job, Tilly gets an interview with the sheriff. During the course of this interview, she is dragged to an interrogation room and asked to supply her sources for those 5 suspects she had given to the deputy. Tilly refuses to give up her friends. Soon after those suspects are receiving visits from the sheriff and they are told that it was Tilly who supplied their name as a suspect. One of these "suspects" visits Tilly at the newspaper. She is furious. She thinks she will lose her reputation because Tilly could not keep her nose out of other peoples personal private business.

Eventually Tilly and her friends do solve the mystery. And also, by the time I got to the end of this book, Tilly the character was clearly growing up. She was no longer depressed over the ex-husband. She donated his stuff to Goodwill and repainted the house. She was even asked out on a date by a potential new boyfriend. She has grown on me, and I might just read book 2.

3.75stars—NEWS AND NECTARINES is the first instalment in Carly Winter’s contemporary, adult TRI-TOWN MURDERS cozy murder-mystery series focusing on thirty-seven year old journalist and divorcee Mathilda ‘Tilly’ Donner.

Told from first person perspective (Tilly) NEWS AND NECTARINES follows in the aftermath of a fire and the murder of Tilly Donner’s neighbor. A fire had destroyed one neighbor’s nectarine orchard, and looking at the damage, Tilly will find another neighbor lay dying on the ground. Desperate to uncover the truth, Tilly pulls on her journalist’s investigating hat, and begins a search for the truth. Within hours and days of the murder and fire, Tilly has fingered several citizens of Oak Peak, and has found herself a target of a possible killer, as well as local law enforcement. Having lived three years in Oak Peak, Tilly thought she knew everyone but ghosts will come out of the wood work, pushing Tilly to dig further into a possible motive.

We are introduced to an eclectic group of small town characters and personalities including Tilly’s friends Carla and Debbie; Deputy Byron Mills; Mayor Doug Shelton; orchard owners Bill and Sharon Rupert, newspaper editor Harold, and Tilly’s new neighbor Derek.

NEW AND NECTARINES is a light and easy read; a story of desperation and betrayal, secrets and lies, family and friendships. The gossip mill works overtime with every clue revealed and unearthed but our heroine is at the center of the rumors and innuendos, finding herself a prime suspect, as well. The premise is entertaining with all the usual cozy mystery elements; the characters are diverse and desperate.

In structure this is a pretty straightforward cozy mystery. Tilly is currently unattached after her husband left her, hiding away in a small town with her dog and cat (amusingly named Tinker and Belle) while doing a spot of writing for the local newspaper. She gets caught up in a murder investigation when her neighbour’s nectarine orchard is dramatically burnt to the ground when a stash of illicit fireworks catches light.

The first part of the book feels a bit like a tour of the town, as we get to see all the key suspects as well as Tilly’s friends, but at least the reasons for all this wandering about are set up well and none of it feels particularly out of place. When Tilly does encounter anything suspicious she rushes to tell the local police, something which is refreshing in a story such as this. Nothing can be that simple, of course, so she ends up a suspect herself and now has extra motivation to solve the mystery.

The ending is satisfying, with plenty of social and romantic loose ends to lead in to further stories, so on the whole it is a good kick-off to a cozy mystery series.

3.5 stars, rounded down

I picked this book up because I needed a book with a moon on the cover for a challenge spot and this one was short. Being a new author for me, I wasn’t sure what to expect, so the story was, overall, a pleasant surprise.

Tilly, the MC, is described as one of the klutziest people ever, which got old pretty quickly, but otherwise, I liked her character and her persistence in pursuing the truth. That said, her habit of running to the police with every new theory she and her friends came up with got annoying, reminding me of the boy who cried wolf.

I had my suspicions about the character who eventually was identified as the killer, but I wasn’t certain... and the motive was a surprise, although it made sense. I will read the next book in this series at some point, but it’s not going near the top of my list.

This is a fun and fluffy read. I really enjoyed the idea that a reporter, our main character - Tilly, is investigating the murder under the auspices of writing background stories. It gives her a reason to ask questions. I absolutely did not have a clue until chapter 18, which makes me happy. I really don't want to read a book that is so predictable that it's boring. I also appreciated the tie-in to The Guest Is a Goner. It was sad to go from a couple Sedona Spirit Cozy Mysteries to find that Tilly isn't married anymore. Tilly does a good job of upsetting everyone, while simply doing her job. I was pleased that the Sheriff wasn't written as an idiot. The writing is good and the characters are strong. I recommend it for a cute, cozy read.

Fireworks and cows

Tilly works for a small town newspaper, she's divorced from her cheating ex-husband. Fireworks go off in the middle of the night catching her neighbors orchard on fire. Mr. York was hiding them for the mayor. The next morning she finds Mr. York stabbed but alive. He tells her that the person who started the fire stabbed him. He dies before help can arrive. Tilly writes articles about the fire and death. She's accused of the murder and decides she needs to solve it so that she doesn't go to jail.
A little slow in the beginning but picked up and became more interesting in the middle to the end. Like the ending.

Fireworks, a nectarine tree on fire, a lone reporter in town.

Who lit the fireworks and why?

The next morning, Tilly finds her neighbor dead with a knife in his chest. He pointed up to the sky to indicate who lit the fireworks and started the fire. The person who lit the fireworks was the same person that killed Mr. York.

As the lone reporter, Tilly had several stories to wad through for the newspaper. This focused more on the reporting and trying to cover the different stories (humanities piece, the mayor's fireworks, and the murder.) Not that focused on the murder case. Still, a pretty good read.

A fire in the neighbouring nectarine grove and a murder provide reporter Tilly Donner with plenty of news to cover for her smalltown newspaper. But when the police start looking in her direction, Tilly will need to use her investigative skills to solve the case.

While I did enjoy this story very much, there was a disconnect for me. Usually, I find myself becoming involved with the action as if I were there. This time, it felt as though I were reading from a distance and I'm not quite sure why. Because the plot entertained me and the mystery-solving was somewhat plausible, I'll revisit this series in the future.

The suspect list grows as clues and trails are spread by the town gossips. I enjoyed this book and recommend it to everyone who likes cozy mysteries. I give it 5 stars.

Unexpected twist at the end

Small town newspaper reporter's neighbor gets murdered after illegal fireworks he is hiding in his shed cause a huge fire that burns down an orchard. Honestly, I don't blame Tilly for worrying about living next door and wondering if the killer will hurt anyone else, including her. So yes, why would she not hypothesize who the suspects are and share her findings with the sheriff especially as she and her best friends gather information while reporting/gossiping about the deeds.

Tilly Donner is awakened from a deep sleep to find her neighbor's nectarine orchard engulfed in flames. After speaking to her nearest neighbor, Mr York, she finds the fire started from something he was hiding for the mayor but, when checking on him before leaving for work the next morning, she finds Mr York with a knife in his chest. Who could have killed Mr York & why. Being a reporter, she finds herself writing stories about the event that has the whole town talking. Who really killed Mr York & why?

The noise that awakens klutzy Tilly is not her alarm clock but by a loud explosion followed by fire. And, that's just the beginning of a terrible day. She also finds her neighbor dying with a knife to his chest. With his dying breathe, he gives her a clue to the murderer. Will she survive her various accidents to prove who killed him? Or, is it even her responsibility to investigate? She's just a reporter at a small town newspaper, after all. And, as she reminds herself at the end of each of the first ten chapters, it's up to the authorities to solve the murder.

Meeting Tilly

Interesting, well conceived characters of the two legged and four legged kind. I must admit that initially Tilly's character did not have much appeal but she definitely grew on me, especially through the way that she dealt with her many 'accidents'. Also, the humor woven through the story added to the momentum and helped to hold my interest, so I ended up becoming fond of Tilly and her friends.
Reading this turned out to be a nice way to spend an afternoon. Good, clean, entertaining novel.

This is an interesting mystery of murder in a small town where everyone knows everyone else- or do they? A young divorcee lives with a cat and a dog and writes for the local paper. Fireworks stored in a barn after being banned due burning down main street years ago are lit and burn down a few areas out of town and the man storing them is found with a knife in his chest. A quick fun read for a busy person!

Good Story, Condescending author

I really enjoyed the author's style and the story was incredible. Why then did I only rate this a 4? Simple, the author spoke rudely about women in their 70's. She called us gossips with nothing left to do in or with our lives. The fact that I'm betting MOST of her readers are actually in their 70's is insulting and condescending. I find it 100% ridiculous that Any Author would disrespect those who actually buy her books.

I have mixed feeling about this one. It is indeed a fun and light read with an unexpected ending of the case. I gotta say that I can't see it coming because they kept adding new characters to 'trick' readers. What I don't quite like is the detail which I think some of it were unnecessary, like Derek's eye color or whatever... i feel like it doesn't really important for the main story so... why. Since there are lots of unnecessary detail like that I just skim read second half.

Tilly Donner – reporter, neighbor, arsonist, friend and potential murderer. At least that what the local sheriff thinks. It’s up to Tilly and her circle of friends to discover who really committed the crimes and save Tilly’s dwindling reputation.

NEWS AND NECTARINES is a typical “murder in a small town cozy” that provides a quick, sometimes humorous read that you can “knock off” in a couple of hours…….and at the moment, it’s a free download so what have you go to lose?

Great little mystery with an uber surprise ending. Tilly is an exceptional reporter, the only employee at the Tri-Town Times. Between her job, her pets and her friends, she has no time to commit murder. Her guileless offerings to the sheriff just might land her in jail. A great start to this new series.

Fun read.

I enjoyed this book. The dog about killed me--just great. The story and characters were intriguing and engaging. I liked the uphill battle aspect. You get a sense of what it's like to be an outsider in a small town. She handles it well. This book is definitely worth checking out.
