Let's start this off with an invitation to get some FREE books. No, you didn't read that wrong, we are talking about multiple free books. I love giving away free books because once people delve into the fast-paced mystery thrills I write, they go on to buy lots more.
When I wrote my first novel, Paranormal Nonsense, I was a Captain in the British Army. I would love to pretend that I had one of those careers that has to be redacted and in general denied by the government and that I have had to change my name and continually move about because I am still on the watch list in several countries. In truth though, I started out as a mechanic. Not like Jason Statham, sneaking about as a contract killer, more like one of those greasy gits that charge you a fortune and keep your car for a week when all you went in for was a squeaky door hinge.
At school, I was mostly disinterested in every subject except creative writing, for which, at age ten, I won my first award. However, calling it my first award suggests that there have been more, which there have not. Accolades may come but, in the meantime, I am having a ball writing mystery stories and crime thrillers and will claim to have more than a hundred books forming an unruly queue in my head as they clamor to get out.
Now retired from the military, I live in the south-east corner of England with a pair of lazy sausage dogs. Surrounded by rolling hills, brooding castles, and vineyards, I doubt I will ever leave, the beer is just too good.
The third stop on Albert Smith’s journey to learn about food is the small village of Stilton, where he plans to take a tour to see how the cheese is made and experience the Stilton Cheese Festival. But he arrives only to find that someone has stolen the entire inventory of cheese! He befriends the village Constable Oxford, and offers to assist him. In the process, he helps to uncover another crime at the same time. I really enjoy Albert and Rex’s adventures, especially Rex’s thoughts!
I got myself a coffee, then I sat down on my cumfy chair to read this fun book.
I love this author's style of writing. When an author can make Stilton Cheese sound thoroughly interesting then his book has got my vote.
Albert Smith and his dog, Rex Harrison, have travelled to Stilton, where the strong but wonderful Stilton Cheese is made. They are on a culinary tour of Britain basically because Albert, a widower of a year, can't cook interesting and edible fare for himself, so this culinary tour is a way to help him gain the skills he would like to have in order not to either starve or poison himself. His dog Rex, goes with him on these travels and a fine old time they have to be sure! Rex hates squirrels with a serious vengeance and loves food with an equal level of passion. These two great feelings can land him, and Albert, in some really funny situations.
On this particular occasion the Stilton cheeses have been stolen; all of them. and since Albert was booked into a tour of the Cheese Factory or Creamery/Dairy as some people call it, to see how the cheeses were made, and matured, and for tasting which Albert was really looking forward to; those arrangements are now cancelled.
After realising his factory tour was not happening; Albert starts to wonder what to do with himself; when he unfortunately becomes an unwilling witness to Stilton's local beat policeman, PC Oxford Shaw, getting verbally abused and humiliated by his superior office.
Feeling very badly for the PC, Albert starts to feel his old retired policeman head switch on. There is something odd going on in this sleepy little town, and it's making his old retired policeman's nose twitch. So he decides to help PC Shaw. So he cajoles the PC into seeing things his way: that PC Shaw really needs his help to crack the case over his superior officers head.
Albert is actually really trying to help young PC Shaw because he's very green. But suddenly things change and in a heartbeat, some bodies are found and they maybe the thieves, but who killed them and why?
This book was a great read! There is comedy at the breakfast table with Albert that really had me laughing out loud. If you enjoy your stories with a smidgen of humour, then I am sure you will love this one.
Another exciting book in the chronicles of the elderly retired detective, Albert Smith, and his sidekick companion, former police dog, Rex Harrison, as they snoop around behind the scenes to solve the mystery of the theft of the entire store of Stilton cheese from the dairy that produced it and, in the process, stumble upon some brutal murders and a counterfeiting operation. Are these crimes connected, and, if so, how? Will Albert and Rex be able to put all the pieces together and help to solve these crimes that have disrupted the annual Stilton Cheese Festival in time for it to be held for the expectant villagers as well as for the many out of town guests who have arrived to celebrate with them?
Stilton Slaughter by Steve Higgs is the 3rd book in Albert Smith's Culinary Capers series. Retired policeman Albert Smith and his "assistance" dog Rex Harrison continue their culinary tour of Britain and travel to Stilton for the Stilton Cheese festival only to find that all the cheese has been stolen. I loved this book and especially Rex Harrison and I particularly enjoyed hearing his thoughts. Albert does not seem to have much luck on his culinary tour but still has a lot of fun and adventures in the process. A very entertaining and enjoyable mystery.
2022 bk 39. I love cheese, have never tried Stilton, but will after reading the history of the food at the end of the book. They mystery itself was very well put together, and involved the theft of a large amount of stilton and the introduction of an evil criminal mastermind (you notice I didn't say genius.) Oh, and Rex Harrison continues to wish humans could learn to really use their sense of smell.
Albert’s mentoring of Oxford was my favorite part of this book. This story had a lot going on that all comes together in the end. Rex continues to add a lot to the story. Another fun read.
Another entertaining, good humoured book by Steve Higgs and full of information regarding Stilton Cheese production in the UK. The book also describes how to manage people in easy steps as Albert clearly takes under his wing the professional development of the officer Oxford. If dogs could talk, it would be lovely if they could talk like Rex - the best parts of the story are usually those seen by Rex´s eyes - and he is always looking to help "his human" and is always hungry.... The description of when Rex tries to reach a piece of bacon in the inn´s restaurant is hillarious! The plot is well knit and the behaviour of the community is somewhat expected - there´s always those who believe that someone is trying to improve at the cost of the others and therefore are much more in favour of rioting. The characters are really delightful and even the bad ones put a smile on the reader´s face. As a member of the author´s ARC team I received a free copy of this book downloaded through Bookfunnel and this is my honest review.
Steve Higgs has done it again with one of the funniest cozy mysteries ever read. It seems that any time you add an animal to the mix, you open the door to hijinks and mayhem. Albert and Rex have come to Stilton for the cheese festival. However, the cheese is missing. It’s been stolen. And the fun begins.
I love the way Rex has a voice throughout the story and just because Albert can’t quite understand Rex, Albert is learning. Rex is determined to teach his human. Each book builds on the one before, but that doesn’t mean it can’t be read as a stand-alone. It’s a complete story on its’ own.
Even after you’ve finished the story, there is still more. Mr. Higgs offers some history and a recipe that is pertinent to the story. It’s actually one of my favourite parts of his books. I have no problem recommending this book to readers.
Albert and Rex are at it again. They’ve traveled to Stilton, England to attend the Stilton Festival and learn about the famous cheese. No sooner do they arrive than they’re drawn into an investigation of the theft of the town’s full inventory of its cheese. What’s to happen to the festival? Then things escalate, and Albert and Rex are deep into discovering who’s behind the robbery.
I absolutely love Albert and Rex. They never fail to entertain and inform. There are points where they make me laugh out loud, and others where I’m intensely concerned for their well-being. Most of all, I can’t wait to see how they work together, without being able to communicate, to solve the crime.
The writing is fast paced and snappy. I listened to the audiobook, and the narration is perfectly matched to the book’s intent. The narrator’s performance never leaves you guessing about which character is speaking. The voices he’s created are perfectly matched to the written character.
I highly recommend this book, and the entire series. I can’t wait to read more about Albert and Rex.
I received a free copy of this audiobook from the author through Audible. I thank all involved for their generosity, but it had no effect on this review. All opinions in this review reflect my true and honest reactions to reading this book.
I find this series darn near irrisistable even though it's not my usual thing. British people and places are not top on my list to read about; a retired detective traveling around to learn cooking secrets--not so much; and an author who insists on including the bad guy's points of view, bleah! That latter would have ruined the book for me except that he isolated those bits in separate chapters, so I could just skip them until I got back to the POVs that interested me.
Not meaning to be such a stickler, but mixed POV in a mystery or a romance novel just sucks for me. Specifically, mixing the bad guy with the detective--it takes all the mystery out of it! It's like reading, POV-1: break in a door and steal stuff POV-2: why broke in this door? I better go see what's missing. POV-1: take the watches and rings to the pawn shop but give the thumb drive to my boss POV-3: there seems to the watches and rings missing, where did they go?
See how boring? Where's the mystery when you (the reader) already know all the answers? I understand that the author has to plot the story from both POVs, but he's supposed to keep one of them to himself! Or is he so proud of himself for concocting it that he simply has the share it...and ruin the suspense?
Well, despite that, I still enjoy the book a lot. Which says something interesting. About something. I won't share that, though.
Steve Higgs, Book 3 in the Albert Smith Series. Albert Smith and Rex go to Stilton for the annual Stilton cheese race. But, they find no cheese when arriving. There was a robbery and all the cheese was stolen. Odd to say the least. Albert thought so and told the young constable there was something going on. The young constable is not liked by his boss so the boss doesn’t give him much to do. Albert gets involved and helps Oxford (young constable) figure out what’s going on. It turns out just fine but there are lots of antics before the end. These are light and easy to read mysteries. Albert’s children (grown and police in their own locations) would prefer their dad stay home but Albert wants to find out how to make the tasty dishes his wife made during their married life. So, he is touring England to learn how his favorite dishes are made. So far 3 of 3 have involved solving a murder. I expect they all will since these are mysteries. Fun stories. The author is terrific and has lots of books in several different series all with humor.
What a hoot !😀😉,this clean cozey murder mystery is filled with charm ,as much intreage as you could ask for and the most outrageous caracters vibrant and ready for an adventure. Albert and his dog Rex Harrison are tour of his home country to complete part of Albert's bucket list, but things don't seem to happening the way they're expected. Instead Albert seems to be embroiled in a mystery instead of enjoying restful easy travel and enjoying learning how to be preparing some of his favorite foods. Funny how some things turnout. Steve Higgs knows how to spin a tail that can satisfy any cozey murder mystery readers appetite, so aquier a copy of "Stilton Slaughter "so you yourself can enjoy reading it as much as I have. 😉😊Kat
Albert and Rex Harrison travel to Stilton to see how Stilton cheese is made.
But when they get there, they find that someone has stolen all the cheese, right before the world famous festival.
The local police are not very interested in solving the crime. So Albert teams up with Oxford, a young cop who is constantly dissed and humiliated by his CI, to investigate, and to give the boy some pointers and confidence in himself.
The situation quickly escalates into murder as well as theft. And the people around are not who they seem to be.
Albert takes down the big boys, and Oxford becomes the cop he was always meant to be.
Of course, they couldn't do it without Rex Harrison and his nose.
On to Stilton for the eponymous cheese festival. In a taxi no less! Albert and Rex once again arrive at their destination to find a decided police presence. Is it a murder? How will whatever it is impact the festival? Albert just can't leave a mystery alone and immediately decides to investigate. This mystery will be a challenge to Rex's amazing nose as the smell of the cheese is overwhelming (especially at first sniff). Action and hilarity will follow. Eccentric characters will be encountered. And Rex will solve the mystery first, if only Albert would listen to him. Such a fun read. I do hope Mr. Higgs will have a chance to let some of these characters back into future stories. So looking forward to the next stop on the tour.
Great series. Albert Smith, a retired police officer in England and his failed police dog Rex Harrison are on an extended trip around England searching for the culinary delights Albert had enjoyed when his wife of many years died a year ago. Each town poses a mystery which Albert helps the police to solve, but not without a lot of mishaps. His three grown children (police officers in their own right) frequently help solve the case. This one is a little more complicated, but very enjoyable. #4 is Bedfordshire Clanger Calamity and has connections with Stilton Slaughter. Couldn't wait to get started. They are a quick, enjoyable read. Glad I have 6 more after this one, and others as well.
This is the best Rex and Albert adventure yet, in my opinion. The theft of every cheese in the factory upon the eve of the annual Stilton festival has put the future of the entire community in peril. We lucky readers are treated to multiple viewpoints of the calamity, which will be ultimately solved by a nose that knows there can be such a thing as too much cheese in the air. Rex can barely make out any other scents beyond cheese, yet he manages to put the bite on the bad guys when it counts. And Albert is very helpful to the local constable, who could use some policing tips.
These books were a lot of fun to read. It was especially nice to have a 75+ aged hero that hasn't lost his intelligence and is still so full of life and willing to try new things on his own. Basically living his best retirement life despite the loss of his long time wife.
The writing is humorous and the situations that Albert and his trusty former police dox Max get into are not your typical mystery scenarios. These books are very enjoyable. If you are an audiobook lover, the English narrator, Charles Robert Fox, is great and brings additional authenticity to the locations and culinary delights that drive the stories.
An exciting, cozy animal mystery. Upon arrival in Stilton, for the chess festival, Albert Smith learns that all of the Stilton Cheese has been stolen. Partnering with the local constabulary, he and Rex head into the race to recover the cheese before the festival.
As with both previous titles in the series, there is significant leverage of police procedures and upper echelon. Nonetheless, this is a credible cozy adventure story.
I enjoyed this book more than the first one in the series. Maybe it's because I had more background on the retired police superintendent and his family. I enjoyed the book very much. I love dogs, and being able to "hear" what the dog is thinking makes the books more interesting. The dog sometimes has the mystery almost solved because of his keen nose. This book had fun characters, just like in the first book of the series. The superintendent is a very kind, smart, and thoughtful man who just wants to help. He enjoys keeping his finger in the solving of crimes. I plan to read as many of the books as I can. My local librarian is doing her best to bring in a few more for me to read.

Let me RANT for just a minute. I read the Ebook version of this book in English, but there's no way to get to the English page for writing the review. Yes, I've complained. Yes, I've been ignored.. So far it's happened with TWO of the books for this series. If I hadn't already invested in GR by writing so many reviews, I would change to a different service.
Ok. Done.
This is the third cozy mystery in this series that I enjoy. It's fun, it makes you laugh and, although you may figure out some parts, there are always some surprise twists. I'm going to read two more...cause I got the first five!
Doesn’t that title sound as if you’re going to find a bunch of hacked up cheese all over the place?
In fact, it was just the opposite. How can you have a cheese festival without cheese?
It takes a retired Detective Superintendent on holiday mentoring Constable Shaw to get to the bottom of the cheese caper. Don’t forget Rex Harrison. He, too, played a part.
As Constable Shaw becomes more confident he is able to finally make his first arrest. He also made waves.
It's too bad that Arthur cannot speak and understand Rex's language. Rex's nose is a wonder. His nose always leads to a successful resolution of the case. The camaraderie between Arthur and Oxford was heart warmimg. Rex's antics in the cafe were so funny. Arthur is such a likeable character and he is still sharp with unshakable detective skills. For once, I finally sussed out the bad guy! Usually I am clueless as to who is the criminal. I am ready for the next Rex Harrison book.
I have so been enjoying this series. In each new adventure Albert is learning more and more to understand Rex's clues. And what makes these books so fun for me is that we can hear what Rex is thinking. Ho much he loves his "human" and how he knows it's his job to protect Albert at all times. This story was about the theft of hundreds of rolls of Stilton Cheese. Why would anyone want that much Cheese? Of course, Albert and Rex source out the culprits and uncover a counterfeiting ring at the same time. We learn who the thief is but the reason for the theft is not uncovered.
Albert continues on his culinary tour, this time to attend the Stilton cheese festival. However, it appears the cheese has been stolen, and Albert makes a new friend of the local cop, a young man who has yet to make his first arrest. Missing cheese is not all that is amiss. Two hacked up bodies are found and counterfeit money is circulating in the area.
Another madcap adventure for our favourite retired police superintendent and his strong willed dog, Rex Harrison.
5 stars Great story! Reviewed in the United States on July 31, 2020
This is a great story! A very fast-paced read with great action and well integrated references to the two previous books. It can definitely be read as a stand-alone, but why would anyone not want to read them all?!? Albert is a great character but I have to say Rex is my favorite! Don’t delay, read this books for the mystery and the fun! I received an ARC and this is my honest opinion.
Steve Higgs does it again with his Culinary adventures! Love the daunting duo and their miscellaneous sidekicks' actions as they puzzle through the clues whilst just trying to have a quiet trip. Especially love Rex Harrison's comments to the humans that they just refuse to understand no matter what he does. Cannot wait for Albert & Rex's next adventure. And exactly who is the eccentric food hoarder???
Stilton Slaughter is a book written in the old school tradition but with a modern twist. It is a continuation of the first 2 books in the series both of which were equally good. These novels are excellent stories with a humorous twist to them. Adding a dog into the story adds to the entertainment. I eagerly look forward to reading more stories in the series. First class!
Albert Smith, a retired 78 year old former Chief Inspector, decides to travel around England learning about his favorite traditional English dishes. Accompanying him is Rex Harrison, his German Shepherd who is the only dog to have failed police training. Between the two of them they find adventure and excitement at every stop. Both are wonderful characters who will keep you chuckling. This is the third of a series of cozy mysteries. All wonderful so far
