Wow. In my nineteenth year as a professional organizer, I've found that I can be pretty blasé about books written about organizing, and even more so about those written for professional organizers. But Managing Client Expectations: A Guide for Organizing Professionals stopped me in my tracks. It's that good.

One might suppose that this is a book to recommend to novice professional organizers, and certainly, it's a must-read for those new to the profession. It's a perfect primer for developing one's client-facing business systems, starting from the the design of consultative "discovery" calls, getting to know the client's needs and pre-existing expectations, communicating the relative importance of scope, schedule, and cost, and identifying support systems and stakeholders as well as red flags in a way that serves the professional organizer (and thus all of the organizer's clients). The book also does a superb job of communicating policies and procedures in a way that brooks no misunderstanding.

Smartly, Robertson does not merely focus on managing client expectations as a pre-work requirement, but her advice follows through the entire organizing process, touching on issues related to maintaining (and adjusting) work focus, setting boundaries, and the gamut of ways a professional organizer can, quite literally "manage" the organizing session through respect, timekeeping, strategic listening, and developing (and illustrating) rapport with the client.

I really liked that the book also touched on the elements of the professional organizing practice that serve the organizer (which again, in turn, improve the organizer-client relationship), everything from procedural issues for ending a session and going on your way, to wardrobe, to follow-up, to practitioner self-care.

Earlier, I noted that this is an ideal book for novices, but it's also appropriate for intermediate and veteran professional organizers. Having eschewed in-person client work during many months of the COVID pandemic, I found that reading Managing Client Expectations reminded me of the aspects of my procedures which after many years, and especially after a hiatus, benefit from revisiting. As I begin talking with prospective clients again, the messages of this book are not far from my mind.

I should note that in addition to the actual content, this book is a delight to read. For those readers who have ever attended one of Standolyn Robertson's presentations, they will find her patented warmth and wisdom on every page. Those readers (perhaps very new professional organizers) will likely find that the ease of reading comes precisely from the sense that the author knows her material and delights in imparting it with generosity of spirit, as someone who has traveled this road before and wants to warn you to avoid the potholes and construction slowdowns along the way. Robertson's un-stuffy approach makes this an easy, inviting read!

This book should be on every professional organizer's (3D or digital) bookshelf.

As a 12 year veteran residential and ,now, photo organizer, I appreciate Standolyn’s experience and expertise. She provides straight forward advice and intriguing points to think about further. I’ve picked up several pointers that I am going to integrate into my business practices. You don’t have to be a professional organizer to benefit from this book. Any service based entrepreneur will get value from reading it.

I've been a professional organizer for 5 years now. This book provided a wealth of helpful information for me! I love the blend of theory, inspiration, and practical tips. I realized that I have been making a few rookie mistakes, and I look forward to upping my game as far as professionalism thanks to this book. Whether you're new to the profession or a seasoned veteran, you'll find helpful information here.
