Man, am I a total lameass. I probably have read a thing or two in the last several months--maybe even something that wasn't a series continuation, I'll have to think about it--but it's too late to fake it now! So, looking around the detritus of my nightstand, I see that I did read Crown vol 1 (and possibly 2), some time ago.

::sigh::

I know that it's supposed to be really over the top. I do. The unbelievably HAAAAWT men who show up and sweep off Cinderella Mahiro (one of whom is her devoted long lost brother), who are riiiich and the beeeeest mercenaries eeeever, are fiercely committed to her protection and cannot be outsmarted. Mahiro herself is so eternally sweet and cheerful and loving and optimistic that I kind of want the evil queen to kill her.

The series is self aware enough to poke fun at its caricatures, but seriously? Not enough to keep going past 2 volumes.

-5/10
-The artstyle is very good, especially building designs
-I was taken abake by the fact that it feels like her brother is a potential love interest along with another 20 hear old guy
-It completely ruined the series which otherwise had so much potential to me

Crown by Shinji Wada and You Higuri is a shojo romance manga. Our heroine is high school girl, Mahiro Shinomaya, who lost her parents recently and some cousins came and took over the house her parents owned, turning Mahiro out into the street. She was taken in by some restaurant owners (who conveniently explain the backstory), but Mahiro insists on working for them and also for other various jobs around the city to help pay for her upcoming college. While on her second job of the day, directing traffic, Mahiro tries to direct a car around but it stops instead, two gorgeous men getting out of it. Mahiro is kidnapped and the car speeds away before she can do anything.

The two men don't seem to be too threatening, despite the kidnapping, and put Mahiro up at an expensive condo/hotel for the night, along with a basket of oranges, Mahiro's favorite fruit. The next morning, things come to light - one of the two men who kidnapped Mahiro is her elder brother, Ren, whom she'd all but forgotten except for her love of the scent of oranges. He and his best friend, Jake, are mercenaries, out to protect Mahiro from the evil queen who wants both Ren and Mahiro dead as they are the heirs to the small kingdom island of Regalia. They had been sent away for protection against their father's second wife.

Mahiro has a magic power (what good is a shojo romance without one, right?), in that she is a dowser. She has a gorgeous crystal pendant around her neck and she uses it as a pendulum and to dowse with. Her mother was so good, she could locate diamonds in mines with her ability and it appears that Mahiro is just as good, if not better, than her mother.

Mahiro has been located by the queen's men and the attacks do not take long to start - on Mahiro's sixteenth birthday, Ren and Jake take her out to Roppongi Hills, the playground of tourists and the rich, only to stage a game of cat and mouse with the men trying to kill Mahiro. In the end, Roppongi Hills is all but destroyed by the explosives Ren and Jake have set.

The storyline is interesting, a blend of sweet and deadly (there are some murders that take place 'on screen', as it were, and Ren and Jake are seen wielding the knives/guns that cause said murders). I would like to see more, as Ren and Jake have already grown on me. Mahiro will take a little time, she's such a sweet, chirpy thing.

Storyline and art give this one an 'A' grade. You should try it.

[This is an old review I'm just now adding to Goodreads.]

Mahiro is a cheerful, hard-working orphan who everyone loves, except for the horrible family that took her in after her parents died. When Mahiro caught the dad peeking at her while she was changing, she opted to leave and live on her own. Ren and Jake, two talented and hot mercenaries, kidnap her from one of her jobs, kick the horrible family out of her parents' house, and then take her to their condo. That's when Mahiro finally learns that Ren is her long-lost brother and that she is a princess who is in grave danger. Their stepmother, Lady Phoebula, wants Mahiro dead so that she can have the pendant that is the key to becoming queen of the country of Regalia. However, neither snipers nor hordes of soldiers will keep Ren from giving Mahiro the best birthday ever.

Right, so this series is over-the-top and knows it. Ren and Jake are OMG hot!!!, Mahiro is so sweet that her very aura can turn any enemy who is not complete cardboard into an ardent admirer, and several of the villains rely on the incredibly lazy stereotype of the Evil Fat Person.

Readers are supposed to believe that Ren and Jake are the perfect mercenaries, capable of taking on a hundred men without breaking a sweat. However, Jake is weak against women and literally becomes petrified when he's hugged by one. And Ren...well, he's just unbelievably great at everything. No explanation is given for how he and Jake managed to perfectly plan and set up a trap for over a hundred trained men, all by themselves. Also, Ren and Jake somehow manage to wear camo uniforms and bulletproof vests underneath expensive suits, so they can be appropriately dressed for battle at a moment's notice.

I'm sure that the whole bit with the crystal pendant was supposed to be very pretty and magical, but, in this already over-the-top series, the addition of supernatural elements seemed like a bit too much. In addition, I was very uncomfortable with the hints of future incestuous romance – Mahiro almost did a love divination for herself and Ren, and Ren and Mahiro are so touchy feely with each other that even Jake thinks it's a bit odd.

I'm not sold on this series yet, and there are already some warning signs of things I won't like. Still, the art is pretty, and sometimes over-the-top cheese is nice. I own the second volume, so I'll continue on.

Extras:

A funny little "what happens after the cover image scene" comic on the first page, a two-page comic-style author's note, and a one-and-a-half-page comic-style artist's note.

Rating Note:

My personal grade was a C/C-. I went with a C (3 stars) because, so far at least, my enjoyment of the art and some of the over-the-top aspects outweighs my discomfort with the hints of future brother-sister romance.

5.0 out of 5 stars A fine mixture of cute & action!, December 10, 2009

This review is from: CROWN Vol. 1 (Paperback)
I wasn't quite sure what to expect from this manga. The first few pages made it seem like it was going to be more action-y, yet soon after that I was introduced to the character of Mahiro- a cutesy anime girl if there were ever one. I have to admit, I didn't think I would like it- but I did!

The plotline isn't exactly anything new, yet the authors manage to put their own unique spin on it. Mahiro is an orphan, having lost her parents in a horrific accident. To make matters worse, she's lost her home to selfish & greedy family members. It doesn't seem like things will change until she is abducted by two strange men... one of whom is her long lost brother! Unbeknownst to Mahiro, the two of them are heirs to a throne currently occupied by their evil aunt, who would be happier with the two of them dead. Add into this several action filled fights & a strange diamond pendant, & you have 'Crown'. (Don't worry- I didn't know what to think of the summary the first time I read it either!)

Really, I can't tell you how much I enjoyed this manga & how much I'd originally thought I wouldn't like it. I was sure that it would be another new manga filled with cliches & nothing really new. I was pleasantly surprised. I loved the dynamics between Mahiro, her brother Ren & his best friend Jake. The author manages to make the relationship between Mahiro & her brother cute & close without making it overly ecchi (there's a little there, but not that much), which is nice- too many manga would have turned it into a series of running gags. I also liked the mixture of action, humor & drama. It wasn't entirely a perfect mix, but it was a nice one. It's something that will appeal to those who want something cute, but want something with a little bite to it.

Overall, I wouldn't hesitate to recommend this to most readers. Fans of die-hard cute or die-hard action may be a little bored, but the rest of us will love this series & long for the next volume to be released!

Crown, Volume 1 is a really fun guilty-pleasure read. A wonderfully superficial, escape-from-the-mundane-life kind of read. Good times.

Mahiro is a young girl desperately trying to make ends meet after her parents' tragic death. She lives a Cinderella-esque life until she is rescued by her knights in shining armor, the infamous (and extremely HAWT) mercenaries Ren and Jake. From henceforth, her life is changed forever.

Mahiro learns the secrets about her past, Ren's role in all of it, and why there is a plot against her life. In spite of having such a hard life, Mahiro is full of exuberant positivity which could appear saccharine. However, I find it endearing and adorable. I agree with Jake, and think Mahiro very much reminds me of a puppy.

This was a really enjoyable read. It had its fairy tale elements, exciting action, and hottie hot hots in military gear!! *SWOON* I thought the adorableness was well balanced with humor and loads of thrilling action. Have I mentioned the yummy nummy mercenaries? Mmm.. yeah...

I really, really loved the silly humor in this volume. Jake getting petrified from a hug, the shower scene, and them breaking into song were some of my favorite moments. It offset the intense action perfectly. I love it when something silly happens unexpectedly and makes you laugh out loud.

Sure, there isn't a whole lot of depth to the story and I am a-okay with that. Sometimes we need a break from all the seriousness and chaos, and just kick back with a light-hearted read with delicious mercenaries! Can't wait for Volume 2!

A high school girl who is really the princess of a far away country and must be protected from danger by two hot guys -- who doesn't daydream about that? And of course, one of those hot guys is her older brother, who she secretly crushes on! (That's manga for you.)
