The Hutton Family #6

It's Definitely Not You

Rate this book
The first time I meet Joe Channing he’s dressed head-to-toe in black, lurking around my grandmother's house.

Up to no good? All signs point to yes.

Dangerous? Obviously. Just look at him.

Sexy as hell? With those blue eyes and that wicked smile—I mean, he isn’t NOT good-looking...

The second time I see him, he’s trying to kill my grandmother. At least it looks that way. At first. Maybe I misjudged the situation, but that doesn’t mean I misjudged him.

Joe and I? We’re oil and water. Gasoline and a flame. Great hair and a windy day.

I’m a doctor. I help sick kids. As for him? I suspect serial killer with his sights set on my grandma. While I'd be happy to never see him again, she falls for him hook, line, and sinker, then hires him to renovate her house.

I’ve never met someone who makes me feel so…

…so…

…so everything.

I want to grab him. And shake him. And kiss him until he can't see straight...

Hold on. Say what now?

A full-length, standalone romantic comedy filled with hilarious characters and sizzling chemistry. You'll adore this grumpy hero and his sassy heroine as they stumble into their happily ever after. Laugh, swoon, and fall in love!

This book was such an amazing read. After reading about Harlow and Collin, my mind kept on thinking what emotions could there be if I read about Joe. So when I jumped into this story I honestly was unaware that the author was writing about my solitary hero. The story made me laugh and it also filled my heart with pure love. The characters behind this romance are perfectly embedded into the picture. "Penny" was the right fit for a man who sacrificed his life to help his foster brother carry out his dream. Both characters balanced one another. I sensed their chemistry since their first encounter. What else could I ever say? I couldn't recommend enough this heart warming, funny and must read.

This book is another five-star winner for me as It’s Definitely Not You is filled with all my favorite things: humor, angst, steam, tears, and tenderness. I love this small-town family drama set in beautiful Key West Florida, and even though is part of a series, it can absolutely be read as a standalone.

Joe Channing enters town when his foster brother Collin West, a famous musician, married local girl Harlow Hutton. I just loved Joe’s sense of humor, and his witty banter with our heroine, Dr. Kennedy Monroe. The initial few chapters are hilarious as they go back and forth with their mutual love-to-hate you jibes. Toss in an eccentric meddling grandmother and other wonderful supporting characters, and I couldn’t put this book down.

Joe pulled at my heartstrings on every level. I truly believe people are who they are because of their upbringing and his neglect as a child made him the vulnerable, sensitive, loveable a$$ that he is today. Abby writes so poetically and as a reader, you get totally engrossed in their world and feel every emotion.

Kennedy was a medical doctor and I so admired her work ethic and compassion, and both of their strong moral characters. Joe was a gifted carpenter trying to make it on his own, kind to others, and so appreciative of the little things. He just longed to be loved and it was really very touching when he finally opened up to Kennedy. Joe was so swoony and sweet, possessive and protective, and just a sweet, sexy man!

These enemies-to-lovers couldn’t deny their mutual attraction and soon realized how wrong first impressions could be. They had so much in common as they were both family oriented, down to earth, non-pretentious, and liked to give back without ever wanting something in return.

I loved how they weren’t perfect, could admit when they were wrong, and had to fight for their well-deserved, tear-filled happily ever after. Bravo Abby! I loved “It’s Definitely Not You” and highly recommend.

I absolutely adore the Hutton’s...but Joe, he stole my heart! It’s Definitely Not You was simply amazing!! There was lots of laughs and endless swooning! My new favorite book by Abby!!

Joe was getting back into the swing of staying in one place. He knew what he wanted to do, he just had to figure out how to go about it. What he didn’t expect was finding a beautiful girl, who just might be out to get him...

Kennedy was busy between her job and volunteering, so when Joe burst into her life, she was not ready for him at all. Between thinking he was trying to rob and possible kill her grandma, she knew she had to keep an eye on him. But with all the time she spent with him, her weariness was changing into something else!

Seriously, this book!! Do yourself a favor and read it. A perfect blend of laughter, tears, and steam! I would give this 10 stars if I could!! Gah! I don’t think I can express just how beautiful this was!! Abby, wonderful job!!

A smarter man would have explained himself. Or shut up and walked away. I couldn’t bring myself to do either of those things. The conversation was stimulating. The spark in her eyes was interesting. While her judgement annoyed me, I felt compelled to get closer. And so I did.

The mechanical vibe of the writing annoys me, but within 14 pages, I discover that actually the least annoying aspect. “Stimulating” convo here is someone asking who the hell you are… if this is stimulating, then this fucker has obviously just been released from exile.

She was prettier up close. Too bad her personality didn’t match.

How? Why? This occurs at 2%. The MMC is “casing” an old lady’s house after reading an ad for R&B in exchange for handy work. The “her” in question comes up to him to ask why he is snooping around. You see the problem? She’s had two lines of dialogue. The author is FORCING the ‘I don’t like you’ troupe WITHOUT any dialogue, scenes, cause, or circumstance for it.

Isolate the dialogue, and it sounds stupid AF:

Him: “I’m not doing anything wrong here.”

Her: “Said every criminal ever.”

Him: “Spoken like a truly open-minded individual,”…. “Your compassion knows no bounds.”

Open-minded? Compassion? She literally walks up to him and asks what he’s doing here, and he’s talking about open-mindedness and compassion as if there’s been some monumental scene or some kind of dialogue where she accuses him of murder or something. NOTHING has happened. Nothing. Not one mofo thing.

^^^ In response to the above insane dialogue, the FMC obviously feels the same as me - he’s had some imaginary scene with someone else that we aren’t privy to. She pulls her phone out to call the cops. His response:

He thinks…. Fantastic. I may have finally found a worthy adversary, I thought.

Ah, her asking who he is and pulling out her phone at his non-answer means she’s a worthy adversary? WTF is this shit?

He says…. “You’ll feel like an idiot if you make that call.” “At least take a look around the place before you make a fool of yourself with the police. Nothing’s missing.”

She says… “Yet.”

He “sauntered” away to her saying: “I better not see you around here again!”

…. As he flipped her the bird, and says… “You’re in for a surprise then,”

Yeah, all 12 pages of chapter one left me wanting to scratch my eyeballs out with a rusty butter knife.

And so Chapter Two begins with the FMC….

The would-be burglar lurking in my grandma’s backyard had the audacity to shoot me the bird. Like any intelligent almost-victim, I snapped a picture as he climbed into his train wreck of a truck. If I did decide to call the cops, I would need to do better than, “He looked like sex on a stick, but in villainous kind of way.” Who wore black jeans and a black leather jacket in the Keys, anyway? In July? Someone with criminal intent. Or a low IQ. Either way, his emo rock star attire told me everything I needed to know. What a shame to waste such a gorgeous face on a man like that. After Captain Asshole scurried away, I perused the grounds as if I, Dr. Kennedy Monroe, had an inkling of what to look for after stumbling

Yeah, no. She’s just as fucking stupid as he is.

I can save myself the tedious trauma of reading this … Pinky and The Brain deserve each other. HEA.

Quickest DNF in the history of DNFs.

It’s definitely NOT for me… that’s for damn sure.

Fun and light hearted banter between the main characters who initially disliked each other.

I read this is one sitting and really enjoyed Kennedy and Joe’s interactions.

Kennedy’s nan and her nosey neighbours were also pretty fun.

You always want to make a good impression when you meet someone - right? Well in the case of Joe and Kennedy, their first meeting was anything BUT a good impression. Between name calling and overall just the sense of hatred and loathe these two do not like each other.....that is until they are thrown together and it becomes so much more. But can you fall in love with the enemy? With loads of laugh out loud hysterical jabs back and forth between them and times of true swoon-worthy moments, Abby Brooks has once again created characters that the reader cannot help but fall in love with and a storyline you will not want to end. Perfectly written!!

I have always enjoyed the enemies to lovers trope & this one was pretty good. The sarcastic banter between the two MC's was entertaining, quite witty & charged any sparks released from this soon to be couple. There were many detailed scenes about their work lives, Kennedy a pediatric doctor cared so much for her patients, choosing time & treatment over a push to get the patients in & out to ensure more profits. Joe, skilled in construction, was working on her grandmother's house while living in her guest house. He had been away from the trade for many years & was building a client base to start his own business. Love a guy who is handy with the tools & with a steady stream of descriptive restorations, well it almost made me giddy. The story telling hit the spot with only a few hiccups from each of their pasts threatening to dissolve this relationship. There was little over the top drama, if that is more to your liking & a nice HEA. Definitely an easy & enjoyable read.

The first time Kennedy sees Joe, she thinks he's casing her grandmother's house in order to rob it. He's actually evaluating it in order to fix it up. It's the first of a few misunderstanding between them. They misjudge each other at first. But they become lovers. Unfortunately, Joe has trust issues and a heartbreaking past, which leads them to a dark moment. Keep the tissues handy. The end will have you smiling and feeling great, though.

I love Abby Brooks's style of writing. The language is very colorful--objects hunker and squat, for instance. And there's lots of humor.

Joe's rock star foster brother Collin features in this book. I'm off to read his story now, Beyond Dreams

The exclamation mark that has much awaited!

I adored the Hutton series. So much that I would put Beyond Words as one of my favorite novels (for someone that averages 250-300 a year, that speaks volumes!) This book end for the fabulous shelf of Hutton will entrance you. Do not start it when you have anything else you have to do because it will draw you into the banter between Kennedy and Joe. You will laugh at their pokes and feel grief when you finally know Joe's core. There are serious topics covered in the book- but know Abby Brooks handles them tactfully. Read it. You'll give it 5 stars too.

The last but by no means least and also a bonus book in the Hutton series had me all over the show with laughter, eye rolls, sadness, more laughs, the feeling of family, hope and a feeling of deep satisfaction in seeing Joe get his own happy ever after. Penny and Wiki ... err I mean Joe and Kennedy are fantastic, I loved their personalities and quirks as well as their sparring and banter while we get to know them and they get to know each other. This book is full of characters you will love including stealthy Delores and sweet Toto along with the Hutton's of course and with out a doubt the loveable and not your normal Nan Maxine. This is definitely a book I will be reading again! 💘

Kennedy and Joe

Joe has been standing in the shadows and protecting those he’s loved his entire life including all through a childhood in the foster system. Now it’s his turn to take time for himself and he runs into the beautiful and somewhat prissy Dr. Kennedy Monroe. First impressions can sometimes be difficult to overcome but Joe and Kennedy find themselves becoming friends and then more. Sweet, fun and emotionally well written with nice HEA

I loved this book! I loved Joe Channing in Harlowe's story and this book just made me love him so much more! When a book can make you root for an asshole, it is really well written! When these characters felt something, I did too. I loved the verbal sparring that went on throughout the book. I loved the angst. I loved Joe's softening and learning that he was an ok guy. I loved Kennedy's straightforwardness and strength. Maxine and Delores were a delightful addition to the story. This story is everything I want in a romance and more.

The banter and chemistry between Kennedy and Joe was off the charts! Love how they fought each other and their stubbornness made up for funny and interesting scenes.
Kennedy is a very caring doctor, who lives to work but is not even happy with her paying job.
Joe is the troubled man who protects those he loves with all of his power. His troubled past makes it hard for him to trust and get close to anyone.
Following the encounters between Joe and Kennedy was hilarious. They are in so much denial and fighting so hard to avoid their attraction that’s comical.
The additional characters in the book are a great complement! The Huton family and hot desirable Colin West are an awesome addition! Let’s not forget Nana and Dolores, the wild nosey neighborhood.

If you want to read a book that is a page turner, filed with fun scenes, romance and kindness this is a book for you!
Abby, you continue to amaze me with your words and beautiful stories, lady! Well done! It’s definitely worth the wait to hear about Joe’s story!!

I loved the Hutton’s and Beyond Words is still one of my all time favorites. That said, Joe and Kennedy are a great story. Full of the real emotion Abby Brooks is so very good at.
It’s a stand-alone but maybe best read after Lucas and Cat and Collin and Harlow, at the least.

READ IT !! I SWEAR YOU'RE GONNA LOVE IT !!!!!

Yes, I stole this quote from Abby, but the truth is, after reading the Hutton family, I was not a fan of Joe. I thought he had no future in a story I would read.
HOW WRONG I WAS !!!!
I will never under estimate Abby Brooks' talent ever, ever again. JOE'S story touched my heart.
Let Joe & Kennedy into your kindle!! Now these are "my words", Read it, You will love it!!!!!!!!!!

I'd say a 3 to 3.5* for me.
It was a nice read. Perfect for a day at the beach or for when you want to de-stress after reading something tough. No overwhelming drama. Nothing very out of the ordinary.
I liked both characters. They were fun to read.

I absolutely loved this book! I fell in love with Joe in Harlow's book, and wanted to know more about him. This book answered all my questions and beyond. I loved Kennedy and Joe's relationship. The emotion pours off each page and you find that a piece of your life is in Abby's words. Fantastic read. Loved the ending! You can't go wrong reading an Abby Brooks book. She gets better with each one!

Creating a Tribe

Reading this book about Joe, who was introduced in an earlier book, was just so dang entertaining from the first to the last chapter. It was laugh out loud funny as Joe and Kennedy meet and work out their relationship. Joining in the fun are others from the Hutton family as well as Collin West, all amazing characters from previous books in the series. You don’t have to read any of them to understand this book, it just enhances the already wonderful experience.

There are so many great lines from this book; Joe and Kennedy are such deep characters who are witty, talented and fiercely loyal. I loved how the book revolves around family; the ones formed by blood and the deeper ones formed by love. You don’t have to be related to be a brother; you don’t have to give birth to be a parent. As they work through their issues and form deeper bonds with each other, I just fell more and more in love with them and their story. This is a true winner and a book that begs to be read.

OMGOSH! This story was amazing. I completely lost my heart to Joe!

Ms. Brooks brings these characters to life that creates a heartfelt connection with the reader. I felt every moment, watched their growing connection and really wanted to see them both happy with each other. Just perfection.

Ms. Brooks is a fantastic author. I have enjoyed all of her books. But, I have to that It’s Definitely Not You far exceeded my expectations. Definitely would recommend this book. No romance reader should miss it.
