Haruma's problems are still very much his own, but I feel as if it was Yoh's mother who created the monster he became. That's no way to treat a grieving, traumatized, orphaned child.

The man I love and my closest friends. There are more people in my life who mean a lot to me, and I want to cherish all of them, but I feel like I'm being forced to choose.
Well, it's good that Yoh is starting to realize that this is the choice that Haruma will eventually force her to make. But is she going to take any action for a "why not both?" resolution? Or is she just going to ooze along passively until Haruma makes the decision for her. Considering what we've seen so far, it seems like the latter is all but inevitable.

I guess that's my first gripe about this story. We know who Yoh's red thread guy is. There's no way in hell it's Youta, much less any other male she's been dealing with since the start of this series, or any who might show up later on. And while I think the reader is, at least in part, nudged toward Haruma being a poor broken soul longing for stability and love, neither his means nor his intended ends are in Yoh's best interests.

I have a better idea of what's motivating Sawako in this volume, so that's good. I still think her character pivot didn't make a lot of sense, and was kind of unnecessary. Maybe author Kaido didn't feel like a chipper persona could have taken the actions the wicked plotter persona is taking. But we've got so many wicked plotters at this point--Madoka's in Haruma's train and apparently can meddle with the data on others' phones with no problem at all, just like Haruma himself, ho-hum--that the story's feeling oversaturated with them.

Yoh and Haruma have sex for the first time right about halfway through the series, which reflects romance-like pacing for the story. I wouldn't ever call it a romance, though, because of its psychological horror-y feeling.

I think that stories like this need a smidgen of self-awareness, humor, or some kind of levity, for me to really enjoy it. That's just my preference. This one's both straight-faced and over-the-top melodramatic, and as a result I've had a hard time connecting with it once I got a general idea of what it's up to. So that's my second gripe. I'm still interested enough in seeing how the chips fall (despite knowing who's going to win the pot, so to speak) to read its second half.

Haruma absconds with Yoh to a secret locale, while her friends continue to try and prove Haruma sucks. But when Haruma’s hands start to rock Yoh’s cradle, will our single (black and) white female give in to her basic instincts and ignore the body of evidence suggesting this might be a fatal attraction?

There’s no denying it at this point - Haruma sucks. I mean, we’ve been dancing around that likely scenario here for ages and he did take Yoh away against her will at the end of the last story and all that.

I think the biggest problem right now is that all this chicanery is making Yoh seem like the most oblivious moron in recent manga history. There’s only so much ‘gosh, my year has been so bad’ one should reasonably swallow before switching gears to think why that just might be the case, yet she keeps going.

Of course, it doesn’t hurt that Yoh’s executive functions are currently being rendered non-functional due to some well-depicted (graphic, but not tastelessly so) sex. I mean, people thinking with their libidos does tend to cause trouble. Or ignore it.

Which all adds up to this either being a legitimately good erotic thriller that turns out to be a classic of the ‘lurid trash’ genre or it’s going to be an absolute car crash/train wreck as it attempts to really sell Yoh and Haruma as a palatable end point.

Largely because the damage is totally done - Haruma has imperilled Yoh more than once to beef up his bonafides and he’s also declared his intention, in villainous monologue text no less, to remove all Yoh’s friends from her life until she only has him left (apparently the sex might be good enough to make Yoh okay with this).

And make no mistake, the potential is all here, it’s the execution that’s concerning. As Yoh’s friends continue to Scooby-Doo in the background, they end up instigating a full-on confrontation that winds up backfiring when they learn a harsh lesson about trust.

Touya is pretty straightforward as the best friend and guard dog, though Sawako is incredibly clever yet also really broken in her own way. Her character is such a complicated mess that she ends up as probably the most interesting person in the story - her motivations are… messy.

It’s engaging and trucks along at a fast clip and no mistake. There’s gorgeous art, devious behaviour, all the stuff you want in this genre. But I also want a story to have a strong ending that can prove it knows what it’s doing rather than just hitting the beats it wants.

3 stars - 100% it’s going to come down to how this all wraps up and I think I say that every time, frankly. Mostly because if this story’s wanting me to root for the current pairing it is doing a terrible job of it (and given the covers of future volumes I have very little hope, which does dampen my enthusiasm some).

(Disclosure: I am bound to have missed a sliver of titles writing about these wild things, but I thought most of them up under the color of night, to be fair.)

In this volume we find that Yoh is now in a relationship Haruma and when he takes her away to a resort their relationship deepens even further. Meanwhile her friends are trying to find evidence that Haruma is manipulative and has an ulterior motive when it comes to Yoh.

The big secret that has been hinted at and the memories Yoh cant seem to recall turned out to be what I suspected but even then the author manages to throw in a twist. The depths of Harumas yandere-ness is also fully revealed to the reader. You know he is sinister when the author makes his speech bubbles black with white text.

description

I think it will be hard for her friends to comvince Yoh that Haruma is what he is seeing how in love she is with him and how good Haruma is at twisting things. At first I thought the fact that they became a couple would be Harumas end goal but after this volume I mostly just want her to realize the truth and get out from his clutches.

This manga continues to creep and freak me out. Under the guise of love, Haruma continues to tighten his control over Yoh’s life. He wants to be her one and only and will stop at nothing to make it a reality. Yoh’s memories of her past are starting to return, drawing her even closer to Haruma. At this point, it seems impossible for Touya and Sawako to save Yoh. Can she be reached, or is she too far gone?

~

✖️this was just Haruma being so emotionally abusive in the present — I truly dislike him & I hope they do not end up together

✖️there were 2 tiny moments from Yoh & Haruma’s childhood friendship that I thought were sweet otherwise Haruma makes my skin crawl 😅

✖️I love how Touya & Sawako are trying to gather evidence to help Yoh see the truth & get her out of the relationship but of course this isn’t easy because Haruma is so calculative. They are the only reason I’m reading the next volume to see if they can get through to her

I rate this 3.5 stars.

I understand that Yoh’s being gaslit and that Haruma is her childhood friend and crush (even though they were so young back than that it can’t be called romantic love) and that she’s a victim, but I still don’t like her. I know we shouldn’t blame the victim, she’s almost as bad as Disney’s Aurora, just letting everything happen, not doing anything to stop it, not questioning the obviously suspicious guy who just came back out of no where to Japan after so many years. Seriously, how blind can she be? Maybe listen to the friends who have been with you for the past few years instead of the guy who you haven’t seen in years, but no, this idiot is just going to let this guy string her along and probably won’t realize what’s going on until it’s too late. She's also very bland and just goes along with everything, which I know happens in real life but it's just annoying to read about a main character who just goes along with everything just because some guy said it and seems nice, you can't just trust people you just met after so many years so easily!
There are also way too many secretly cunning (is that the right word?) characters, when there are so many, none of them are interesting anymore and I usually love those kinds of characters but at this point, you just expect everybody in this series to be like that. I bet Yoh ends up secretly being a not so innocent "evil" person as well. The mangaka isn't as clever as they think they are. These characters don't feel like actual interesting cunning grey (whatever they're called) characters, they feel over the top, they feel like the author was trying too hard, that they were trying to be edgy or something. If I compare a similar character to Haruma, like Asami from Finder, there's no competition, Asami is more scary and feels more real whereas Haruma and some of the other characters in this series feel more cartoony and not as intimidating. Same with if I compare Shino or Rena from Higurashi to these characters. Or even Edward Elric from Fullmetal Alchemist who while is a good person, he is also a sneaky genius, proving that you can be both.

I know in one of my reviews of an earlier volume, I said I like yanderes and I do, but something about Haruma just makes me not like him. These two just feel more childish/younger than other stories with yanderes even though they are both adults (although I love Yuno Gasai and she’s 15 or 16 and literally kills people). I love Asami from Finder, the many from manhwa series, etc. Haruma is one of the few yanderes that I don’t like and I’m not 100% sure why. Maybe it’s because I’m not attracted to him like I am to others? Maybe it's because unlike other series with yandere love interests, I don't like her (in other stories, the main character is usually aware of the love interest's obsession and try to fight against them which makes me like and be interested in both characters more)? or maybe I just really like her friends and feel bad for Touya? I don’t know. I do know who Yoh will end up with by the end even if she does finally see the truth about Haruma, that he doesn’t have her best interest in mind.

I didn't want to put this one down. Just when you think this black rainbow over Yoh's life can't get any darker, it does - exponentially so. It's downright chilling. It's hard for me to see Yoh as a flake who can't see the obvious in front of her. Her friends might've figured it out, but Yoh is the victim of many mental and physical traumas, one of which was a psychotic break as a child. And just when she's got her life on track with no idea that she even has a repressed memory, Haruma enters her life and through his machinations and manipulations, she is re-traumatized and triggered repeatedly. And that repressed memory is a doozy hanging out there. I don't think there's anything her friends could tell her that would change her mind by the end of this volume. Even if she saw Haruma in action, she's close to or at a point that he's so far into her head that she'd justify it or choose to overlook it. I've never read a series like this. I don't know what to expect. I don't know the "recipe" for this genre. But I've got #6 on my shelf and it's calling my name.

A yandere simp y'all 😭
My overall thoughts about this is that if you're looking for a light hearted romantic thriller with only a hint of mystery, you can pick this one. Instead of the regular way of drawing the characters, Chitose Kaido's works lean closer to chibis which is my favourite style. Cannot resist the kawai designs. The story has only a few more lose ends left, I hope it ends well.

In this volume, we find out about the event that occurred in the past and why it was so traumatic to Yoh. Also, there is a bit of spice on the side! °˖✧◝(⁰▿ ⁰)◜ ✧˖°

I know that I should not like him because he is absolutely mental, but I am OBSESSED! For me, this is a very entertaining series! I need MORE!!! (╯°益°)╯彡┻━┻

I'm enjoying this one, but it's so problematic for modern day standards. I'm just wondering how they end this one without someone getting hurt.
