Jim Elliot, a modern martyr, gained international recognition when he died with four others at the hands of Auca Indians. His story and memoirs have become a source of missionary inspiration through the writing and speaking of his wife, Elisabeth. Their story is skillfully told by Kathleen White.
Forgive me for saying so but, it seems like the book make Jim Elliot's life sound boring. It's incredible story told a passive way. I understand the book was made a while ago but, that's just how I felt when I read it. This saying, I did enjoy what I gleaned. :)
Heard it said once said that Jim Elliot was the best that came out of the fundamentalist movement... lots to respected and honor about this man, but lots to be critical of and consider if we want our missionaries today to model his manner of life.
this book was... well I thought that the author dragged some parts on too long. I didn't wanna finish reading it. But if you do wanna read about Jim Elliot, than I highly reccomend "Through Gates of Splendor".
I only know the highlights of Jim Elliot, so it was nice to get a biographical snapshot of his life. My only qualm was the lack of timeline throughout the book. Sometimes dates were mentioned, most times they weren’t, and it was hard to tell when/where things happened, as the movement through time was inconsistently spaced out. I’d like to read more about him, or even his letters and wife’s biography of him!
Beautiful background into the person of Jim Elliot, who certainly seemed larger than life. If you're looking for details on Operation Auca, I would pursue additional sources. This book concentrates much more on his life, choices, and faith leading up to his martyrdom.
The book "Jim Elliot One Great Purpose" by Janet and Geoff Benge is divide into 16 Chapters. The book begins with Jim Elliot who has been dreaming since he was a child to become a missionary. He heard of a tribe called the Auca who he really wanted to reach, especially since they were known for their hatred and killing anyone who didn't belong to their own tribe. Why he decided to become a missionary was a quite simple reason. He gathered several datasheets and facts about how many missionaries were in the world, how many people die in a day, and how many people there are currently for every missionary in the world. It was an awful big number and he wanted to help with giving himself for a tribe that has never been touched by civilization and to whom nobody has ever brought the gospel to. The book is written in a catchy way, which makes the reader find out what is about to happen next. the language is clear and easy to understand. I would recommend the book to anyone who has considered devoting their life as a missionary but also someone who has never even thought about the needs in the world. It is an amazing book that shows very well how people who give their life to God get a huge reward from it, and maybe not even in their lifetime but after, and that is what counts.
