Vera: My family is well-known but I bet you’ve never heard of me. I’m surrounded by beautiful people in Hollywood but I’m the overweight redhead hiding in the corner. While my siblings beg for attention, I try to be invisible. Until one day I’m pulled out of my comfort zone and thrown into the spotlight. I’ve been forced onto a reality show where I’m pegged as the lazy, spoiled daughter of the host. I will have to spend time in the wilderness which is something I know nothing about. Just as I’m gaining confidence in myself and in my role on the show, the rug is pulled out from under me again. This time I’m forced to run for my life.
Arrow: My bosses insisted I be part of this reality show. The security company I work for will benefit from the exposure and the winning prize would be nice, too. My buddy Bear and I are prepared for anything. Until we’re partnered with the rich daddy’s girl. She represents everything I despise. She’s rich, she’s spoiled and she has no idea what she’s doing out here with us. It’s only a matter of time until she gives up and I can’t wait for that moment. I can’t stand her, until I’m forced to leave her on her own and my gut feeling is that’s something is wrong. Can she handle the wilderness on her own? I’m beginning to think taking care of herself in the woods is the least of her concerns. Can I find her out there before something terrible happens?
****This book contains mild abuse, swear words, and minimal sex scenes***
I received an ARC of this book for an honest review.
Survival is M. Miley’s debut romance novel and I am here for it! This author knows how to pull you in with her attention to detail. I was sucked in from the very first word until the very last page, needing and wanting more with each page that I turned.
Vera and Arrow are everything. You might strongly dislike Arrow in the beginning, but I promise he makes it up to you. The characters and what they have been through, though not exactly what they’ve gone through, are relatable. They draw you in with each and every word, refusing to let you go.
This suspenseful romance will take you on the ride of your life so buckle up and prepare for it because once you start, you aren’t going to want to stop. Each and every detail so intricately woven that you are part of the story, watching it unfold in front you as if it were a movie playing on the big screen.
Four stars for this romantic suspense that hooked me in and refused to let me go.
If you like some suspense with your romance, this book is awesome! The character development is good and pulls you in. Vera and Arrow are genuine and relatable. The plot is unique with the survival reality show and the family dynamics. Great job M. Miley!
I love the action, suspense, and heartfelt love. Vera is a woman after my own heart and Arrow is my man. Damn, this book had me laughing, crying, and on edge. Love how this one ends. ❤
Survival (BlackByrd Series Book 1), M. Miley's debut novel, is a gripping romantic suspense told in first person, dual POV.
Vera Addington is the redheaded, overweight oddball in her famous Hollywood family. When her father forces her to compete on her brother's survival reality TV show, she doesn't know how she'll ever make it to the end.
Logan "Arrow" Thompson is a former SEALs intel officer working for BlackByrd Security. The last thing he wants to do is waste his time trying to teach some rich brat how to survive in the wilderness.
What will happen when these two team up? Will Arrow be able to teach Vera what she needs to know to survive? Will Vera catch on quickly enough? What will happen when it's time for Arrow to leave Vera on her own? Will she make it out alive? Read the book to find out!
I really enjoyed Vera and Arrow's story. As characters, they were realistically flawed, likeable, and relatable. As a couple, they were well-matched and fostered growth in each other. This book was a page turner that grabbed me from the start and held on tightly until the end. I'm looking forward to reading Bear's story next.
Wow oh wow. For a debut novel M. Miley delivers! This book will draw you in from the first page and keep you on the edge of your seat to the last. Vera and Arrow are two characters you will fall for and root for as you are taking on a suspenseful rollercoaster of emotions and trials. Although he is a down right jerk at the beginning Arrow will take you a little bit, but you will love him. Vera is a mountain of inner strength that will remind you to live your life and embrace changes in order to thrive. I cannot wait until the next book in this series. Well done M. Miley, I tip my hat to you.
I loved this book. I was hooked right away and was on the ride of my life through the lives of our leading lady and hunky man. I could relate to Vera on so many levels and Arrow is every woman's dream of a hero. For me a GREAT book is one I will read again and again, and this book fits the bill. Looking forward to more!!
I LOVED this book! I seriously couldn't put it down. It kept my attention the whole time and I just had to keep going to find out what happened next. The story of Arrow and Vera is brilliantly written and just draws you in! I can't wait to see what comes next!
I loved M Miley’s descriptive writing style and creativity. The characters were lovable and relatable. The story kept me in suspense and made me eager to read more. I can’t wait to read her next book.
Oh what a wonderful story. From beginning to end you will be an emotional reck. These two go through so much. I love their support characters. They are a hoot. Not crazy about the epilogue time gap though.
Really good story! The book isn’t one I normally go for, but I liked it.
I thought this book was predictable. It was predictable, but I really enjoyed it. I think the thing I liked most about it was the growth of the characters. Vera grew more confident in herself, and Arrow grew to love her. I really enjoyed Bear’s character too.
Some issues I had were:
The hyphenated words at the end of the sentences are awkward (example: s-tain), but I don’t know if that’s just because of the device I was reading the book on.
The “villain monologuing” from her father is a little cliche. And why does her family hate her so much? They are shallow and one-dimensional. At the end of the book, it was mentioned that the family members have something wrong mentally, but they still felt flat.
Also, how was the father (in a famous family) planning on getting away with murdering his daughter during a television show? It just felt like the plan wasn’t well thought out. Too many witnesses, too many people who would ask questions. Why kill her in the woods, in a tv show, instead of at home where, by her own words, she’s invisible? It was my understanding that the outside world didn’t really know she existed.
It feels like the climax and falling action in the book is in the middle, which kind of threw me off. But then the end of the book has another climactic scene, so there’s that...
Logan was a stereotypical testosterone-infused male. I wish he wasn’t like that, but he was.
The book drops the f-bomb about 400 times. It’s mostly from Arrow, and he said it so many times that it just lost all meaning. It was overused, and lost its ability to emphasize what the character was saying. It also has crude language in it, during Arrow’s perspectives, which I found uncomfortable. There was also a sex scene, which is fine if you enjoy that stuff. I don’t, so I skipped over it.
All in all, I enjoyed the book.

Ahh! I loved Arrow and Vera so much!! Vera is the daughter of celebrities. Her brother and sister are famous, too, but she is basically invisible and does all she can to stay that way. She’s forced onto a reality show where she meets an alpha-hole named Arrow who, despite his disdain for her, pushes her to her full potential. Just as Arrow is beginning to really see Vera, she’s gone and he’s afraid she’s in danger. I won’t spoil the rest!
