MENACHAP, CALIFORNIA. An incomprehensible event: every person in the audience of a high school play falls unconscious--every person but one. Using interviews with witnesses, loved ones, first responders, and the investigators pursuing the case, a theatre ensemble brings the story of the strange event to life, documentary-style. But as the strands weave together into an increasingly dangerous web, it becomes clear that this phenomenon might not be entirely in the past.
The kids are putting this on at work so I just finished reading through it. It reminds me of Mary Warren’s court scene in the Crucible, which I like. It creates that same feeling of both distrust and a panicked need to trust someone at the same time. I don’t know if I described that feeling right, but if you like creepy stories come see it!
I didn't realise I could add actual plays. anyways I did this with my school and it was so ultra fun even though the audience was underwhelmed and holding back laughter, but at least I got to do a costume change every half scene because the director decided if I didn't want a large role she'd just give me five small roles ❤️
I normally can't read scripts in one sitting but I was SAT. I love the use of recursion and how crazy the incident is but they still justified it with something that looks like science. I loved how the story was told through a ton of different people that weren't all super involved and how you don't really know what's happening until the end. A wild ride.
Horror is very difficult to pull off in a play, but the meta aspect of this makes it work really well. Definitely adding this to my list of plays to direct.
I was not a fan of this. It started out interesting but by the end it just felt like it was trying to hard to be a blend of mystery and sci-fi in theatre, and it felt like the message was that people should be scared to go to the theatre which is not at all a good thing. Left a bad taste in my mouth.
Interesting. You don’t see horror stories that often on the stage, especially not this kind which is more psychological and meta as opposed to like a monster movie vibe. It definitely conjures a creepy, eerie vibe for its mystery, but it’s hard to imagine it playing as flawlessly as it reads. If I were a bigger horror buff, I would probably like it more.
