I loved it, read it in two days, I could relate to almost everything as I was brought up in the 50,s,and my own mum worked at A V Roe's during the war years. My mum and dad married when he came home on leave for a few days, slept in a lumpy bed at his newly acquired mother in law's before heading back to his shop the next day, they didn't see each other again for nine months.
I would highly recommend this book even if you're not from North East Manchester. A real blast from the past.
Living in Manchester, I loved Billy Hopkins books about growing up locally. Myfanwy by Lorna Gillibrand is in a similar vein and of an equally high standard. I loved the laughs, history and was at times moved by this beautiful book. Highly recommend. I wish it was also in printed format as I would buy this as a present for a couple of people.
If you like reading about this generation of World War 2, you will love Myfanwy and her friends. Also, if you have memories of Manchester at this time, it will take you back. And the ending ? I will say no more! Read it for yourself!
A lovely, interesting story for anyone with connections to Manchester or Wales. Paints a vivid picture of what it was like for people in the city and how different the experience was in rural Wales - rural anywhere I suppose..
