Ash is a magical adventure in the Ponderosa forests, where we follow the story of a young girl, Sam, who was unwillingly made to tag along with her father, Jack, on an expedition trip in search of Bigfoot. I didn't know of this field of research known as Cryptozoology, which her father works on and I found myself completely intrigued by it.
Sam has already experienced grief, with her mothers passing not too long ago. Despite her parents' passion for cryptozoology, Sam did not believe in any mystical creatures and is very skeptical. Sam was unaware that Charlie and his sons would join them for this expedition, an old friend of Jack and also a cryptozoologist. As they venture together into the woods, what they come across in the forest soon turns Sam into a believer after all.
What I loved about this book was the magical creature, they end up discovering something they were not looking for. Unexpected turn of events make the this team of adventurers take sides, who will protect this magical creature? The story is easy to grasp and the world building is full of magic, the mystical events that take place are fun to imagine and could easily become a movie. I especially liked how fierce Sam was and her perseverance to keep going at all costs. We discover that Sam is more than what she seems, and I am eager to find out more about her abilities and how this links to her mother in the upcoming novels.
Ash is definitely a remarkable book filled with many twists and adventures. The story revolves around 12 year old Sam, who is dealing a big personal loss in her life and to distance her from the pain and grief, she is dragged to an unknown trip, an adventure that changes her forever. . . Ash really turned out more amazing than I thought, most importantly I loved how vast audience this book could have because it could be read by kids of age 10+ and also by adults since the story is engaging and filled with constant ups and downs. Sam isy most favorite character, she is strong and bold, she definitely know how to deal with certain emotions and I think she is really more matured throughout the book. The story also makes a cozy corner in my heart, mostly because of the relationship between Sam and Jack, the way he calls her princess melts my heart. . . I also loved the other characters, Charlie and his boys really adds well to the adventure, this expedition changes Sam's perspective towards many things and most importantly towards life. She is such an inspirational character because of the person she is, her vision is really clear. The language is lucid and smooth, it's extremely fast paced and well written. The fantasy aspect of the book is not too heavy, it's a light fun filled read which could be enjoyed by everyone. . Rating: 4🌟
Your love is immense, your powers beyond words. May we meet again in Paradise. 🦄🦄🦄 Follow the travels of Sam, a twelve-year-old girl, who is having to grow up faster than she should as she comes face-to-face with legendary creatures once thought to be only myths. Sam quickly learns that magic is not just for other realms but is a reality on Earth as well. Their first trip since her mother died 18 months earlier, Sam is reclusive and uninterested in her dad's work. Jack, a Bigfoot expert, drags his disbelieving daughter on a field expedition to the Arizona forest, accompanied by his best friend Charlie, an alien hunter, and his three sons: Chris, Tommy, and Eli. 🦄🦄🦄 Ash is the first book in the Journeys of the Immortal series by Joel Feldmen. It's aimed for an audience who are in their pre-teens to early teenage years, but this was an enjoyable read even for someone like me who is in her 20s. Sam, the protagonist, is a classic lead that has the virtues one would find desirable in a young, female lead. Not only bold and assertive, even though she is really young, she's protective of her father and knows the difference between right and wrong. Her dad, who is as important a character as she is, is level headed and strong willed. Yes their relationship is rocky at times, but aren't all parent-child relationships? The story reminded me of a series I used to love growing up, but it's on a more elevated level to suit the tastes and preferences of the modern generation. But what was interesting was even though this is generally for a younger audience, there are still glimpses of real world problems that adults face do even though it's a fantasy adventure novel, it still has a sense of reality to it. 🦄🦄🦄 Rated 9/10 Melina L.
This was a solid read. It took me about 5 hours to complete (which makes me very happy). It tells a story I am intrigued to hear more about of mystical creatures with a past longer than our own. Some parts left me confused and frustrated, but others cleared that up and pulled me back into the read at full force. *prepare for emotional Rollercoaster * In the end I felt lifted up and ready for the next adventure! It hit me right in the feels for sure! This is a story you can share with your littles but really enjoy for yourself. The parent/child aspect in this book is unmatched and will show you two sides of the coin, allowing each person to pull something different from the story. I cant wait to read book 2!
This is a great story full of magic. ✨ I love the relationship between the father and daughter. ❤️ I love the magical creature in the book (I won't spoil but it's one of my favorite). 🔥🔥 The story is cute and lovely. Safe for kids and teenagers.
I thought the plot and characters were well developed. From the beginning of the book, I could tell that I was going to like the main character Sam- and I did!
The book from start to finish was action packed, which was fun for me to read!
I highly suggest it for all ages, but seeing how the main characters were (mostly) in their young teens, I’d say it would be geared towards middle school, but it’s still plenty enjoyable for older people!
I was fortunate enough to receive an ARC copy of Ash, from Joel Thomas Feldman, in exchange for an honest review.
This story starts when Sam is dragged along to assist her father’s research on his latest Bigfoot expedition, 18 months after her mother’s death. Whilst her father is a believer of the unexplainable, Sam is not convinced that magic exists in the real world. After arriving at the campsite, Sam is introduced to her father’s best friend and his three sons, and she soon stumbles upon an extraordinary discovery within the forest. Initially, Sam’s father believes this finding is evidence of Bigfoot, whereas his best friend claims that extra-terrestrial behaviour is the cause. As research begins it is evident that neither are correct, and Sam finds herself in a position where she can no longer deny the presence of true magic. As tensions increase, schemes of sabotage and destruction arise whilst Sam is trying to help a new, mythical friend find their way. Sam understands that real magic is a rarity and it deserves to be protected at all costs. However, when time is against her, will Sam be able to accomplish a life-changing task before it’s too late?
I found Ash to be a charming read, that was fast-paced and beautifully written. My favourite part of this book was how well the author involved mythology into a real-world setting. This inclusion, and how it was executed, created a magical atmosphere throughout the book making the read thoroughly enjoyable. Another key aspect, that gave the book its charm, was the characters and how they interacted with one another. I found Sam to be an amazing character who, despite her age, has a strong moral compass and is highly curious, resulting in a very sassy, intelligent individual. Additionally, it was lovely to see how her relationships with multiple characters developed as the story progressed, emphasising her maturity in certain situations.
I give this book 3.5/5! I would highly recommend this book, as well as the author, and I cannot wait to see where the adventure will lead.
Next MG book series to watch for! Ash: Journeys of the Immortal - Book One is the debut novel by Joel Feldman. The story follows 12yr old Sam and her father Jack, in search of Bigfoot. Jack’s long time friend Charlie and his three boys also join them. Jack has always taken Sam on trips and they used to be enjoyable but now that Nan, Sam’s mother, is gone trips are just, boring painful reminders of happier times. This time though, they actually find something and it ignites the spark the trips had been missing. Something magical is discovered.
Ash, Sam’s new mythical friend, only has three days left before he has to go home or he’ll be trapped on Earth, no longer able to live forever. It's a race against the clock having to overcome the mounting tensions and trust issues within the group. Ash reveals to Sam that she has mystical powers, too, but she needs to learn how to control these to help Ash, but can she take on that much? Is this more than a 12-year-old grieving the loss of her mother take?
I was unable to put this book down. It is a five star book. The writing blew me away and put me in a whole other world. Feldman helps you genuinely visualize the beautiful scenery of the forest and magical canyons. I grew attached to Ash and felt truly elated and saddened throughout his journey. I sympathized with the characters and felt on the edge of my seat over some of the actions. I cannot wait to read his next book.
That’s my friends what I call the perfect book to snatch you out from a reading slump! I’m very much obliged to the author for giving me a copy of this book for an honest review.💙
The story centers Sam, a 12-year-old who after her mother’s death has lost faith in magic’s existence in this world. During one of her father’s trips, she discovers a mythical creature that she must help and save from Charlie’s malicious plans, her father’s best friend. While endeavouring to aid the creature’s return to his realm, she learns that there’s great magical powers coursing through her veins that she must learn to control.
Ash is a worthy light read as you’ll probably finish it in one sitting. I loved how the story was conveyed from the eyes of an unorthodox child especially from one with a complex and lively personality like Sam. You’ll find that science, magic and folklore are beautifully interwoven within the fabrics of the story.
It’s a thrilling journey repleted with jauntiness , zealous adventures and charming innocence of young love.
After being left on such a cliffhanger, I can hardly wait for the next book to be released!🙌
PS: I’m not quite sure, but I feel that this is a middle-grade book. If so, this is the best one I’ve read so far! 4.5/5🌟

Ash by Joel Thomas Feldman . . . “It’s only make believe if you don’t believe.” . . . Rating: 4.5 stars Thank you @joelthomasfeldman for sending me an Arc of Ash! . . . Synopsis:

My favorite was Sam. Her personality was bright and sassy, and I really appreciated how anyone of any age could relate to her struggles with grief. ~ I enjoyed the writing style in this book quite a lot. Not only was it easy to follow and descriptive, it had a pleasant simplicity to it that is hard to find these days. . . . Final Thoughts: Ash was a well-thought out book with likable and relatable characters, and I eagerly await the sequel.
This is a very good story for kids and for the kids at heart. There are many lessons of behavior and goodness in this story. I like how our main characters handle a villain and his egotistic antics. If you like adventure look no further this is your story. Very well written with no spelling or grammatical mistakes, medium to fast pace reading
Sam our main Character is a kid like any other these days, except, she lost her mom and wants to be supportive of her dad by entertaining his idea of fun. Looking for Big foot.
That in itself was instantly interesting.
The camping trip turns into an adventure full of magic, and mystery. I was surprised by the originality of the plot with unforeseen twists and turns that grabbed my attention from beginning to end. A page turner. (I truly could not put it down) I usually like young adult or new adult stories but this book found a place in my heart. That tender place where the adventurous child still lives inside.
Not only I will recommend this story for kids but also for parents to read together. The Author wrote this book for his sons age in mind. I am pre-ordering book 2 "Ijiraq" I want to know what is next for Sam.
After 12 year old Sam loses her mother, her faith in magic has diminished. She accompanies her father on another one of his excursions to find a mythical creature that everyone is familiar with. This mythical creature is in trouble because of her dad's best friend. It's up to Sam to protect it at all costs. While she tries to help this creature she learns of these great magical powers she possesses, but she needs to learn self-control while using these powers.
'Ash' is a amazing young adult/middle grade book with a strong female lead. It was fast paced (not in a bad way) story and Feldman sure knows how to write a incredible story. The backstories are very interesting as well and added just the perfect touch to the story. Let's not forget that the mythology and folklore made its presence in the book and that made me happy. Huge thanks to Feldman for gifting me a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.
I stumbled upon this author on Instagram and I’m so happy that I did! The book cover caught my eye right away. I was intrigued! I’m not going to give anything away, other than I’m hooked on this series. The author did a fantastic job at drawing me in right away. This is a big deal to me. His characters are relatable, yet unique. Same as this uniquely written story. It is a YA book, but I think all ages would enjoy the adventure. I’m looking forward to reading more of this author’s writing ✍️
This is a great read for any age. Joel Thomas Feldman's characters are engaging and fun. The book is filled with humor and suspense. You keep reading because you want to find out what happens next... is Sam able to save Ash? Its great that the main character is a strong willed, smart, independent young woman. Looking forward to future volumes in this series.
This book has everything! Love, heartbreak, mystery, and suspense that will keep the pages flying! I could not get enough of Sam whom I so related to. And the feeling of discovering magic is so real, that it’s become a new favorite of mine! I felt that Sam's incredible journey with Ash was my own. I highly recommend this read!
This book was thoroughly entertaining. Joel did an outstanding job of leading you from chapter to chapter, wanting to find out what happened next. The book is fanciful, but great reading for any age. I am eager for the next book in the series to become available.
And this tale will have you believing in fantastical creatures and the goodness of people by the end. Such a cute story and set in my old stomping grounds of northern Arizona! Loved this read.
I was provided an ARC by the author in exchange for reviewing. I would like to thank him for that while also noting it did not change my review.
I cannot in good faith give this a star review. I DNF’d about 31% in. It may be I’m just not the target audience. It may be that I’m not super well versed in Tween fiction. I realize that most of the reviews for this are very favorable. I just didn’t have the same experience, unfortunately.
The protagonist is meant to be Sam, a 12-year-old girl who is skeptical of her dad’s job as a Bigfoot scientist. However, I was 1/3 of the way through and I know next to nothing about Sam as a person. I know she’s 12 but seems younger due to how she’s portrayed (“boys—yuck!” doesn’t seem correct for a 6th grader. They’re usually interested in dating by then). I know she lost her mother. However, I know more about how the death affected her dad than I do how it affected her.
The tone in this was just very strange. I was constantly wondering who the audience is supposed to be. Based on genre, young kids would be the target audience, but there is WAY too much background info about the dad and his friend and how his friend had his dreams crushed in college and blamed his ex girlfriend for it and it made him a terrible person, etc. It felt like the *dads* were the main characters to me and not the kids or Sam. I don’t care about why the friend is mean and I’m willing to bet most kids won’t, either. He’s an awful person and it could have been left at that. He appears to be sexist, as well. He gets in a full on feud with a 12 year old girl about believing in “magic” when he’s an ALIEN HUNTER. It comes out of left field, makes no sense even with the “tragic” “I was laughed out of my field” backstory he has, and comes off EXTREMELY condescending and sexist when he calls her things like “sweetheart” and “darling”. Especially when her FATHER barely stands up to him and defends him to his child.
Not much had happened 1/3 of the way in. They continued to play with the divot in the rock and make the leaves swirl, but we hadn’t met the creature behind it. This pacing made the book feel slow for me.
Overall, I am clearly in the minority that didn’t enjoy it. But the pacing was off for me and way too much focus was put on the parents for a kids book about Bigfoot.
Following the death of his wife, Jack has noticed Sam has been feeling depressed and seems to be losing that belief in the magical that she shared with her mother. Hoping to reconnect his daughter with that belief, Jack takes Sam on a big foot hunting trip in Arizona to meet up with his longtime friend and UFO hunter, Charlie, and his three sons, Eli, Tommy and Chris. However, instead of little green men or the missing link, they find something else in the forrest. What makes Ash a great read is the way the story just starts out with such heart and manages to keep it while juggling thrills and tension along the way. The relationship between Sam and Jack, her father, gives the reader so much to root for. Having started out a as 1 chapter concept piece by his wife, Michaela, I can see how after she gave him the green light to run with it himself, he had so much green pasture to work with in that relationship. I also find Sam herself to be an invigorating, brave and engaging main character for this young adult novel. She's tough and adventurous, and has a lot of heart. While I can see how losing her mother and her father's dedication to his research has strained their relationship, I see so much of Jack in Sam. At its heart, Ash is a story about loving what makes the world and the people we love special, and that's what will keep you reading. I really enjoyed reading Ash, and I think that it would make a great series to read for young girls like my niece. Joel Feldman reminds us that there are beautiful, magical things in this world, especially when we believe and take the time to look for them.
Sam and her dad, Jack, are on a camping trip to find Bigfoot. This is her father’s life work so Sam is used to it by now.
On the first day, Sam finds a giant boulder that’s warm to the touch and has a heart carved into the stone. When she touches the heart 5 wind funnels swirl up into the air, then suddenly stop leaving behind 5 perfect piles of leaves. She’s desperate to get her dad to come and investigate with her so rushes back to camp, only to find that they aren’t alone. Jack’s old friend, Charlie, and his sons, Eli, Chris, and Tommy, have joined them to help out with the hunt.
Sam and Tommy go looking for firewood that evening and Sam takes them straight to the boulder. Eager to see if the wind funnels appear again, she touches the heart carving, and a ferocious wind starts. Even stronger than before. Terrified, she and Tommy run back to camp to tell the others.
Could this somehow be linked to Bigfoot? Could it be aliens like Charlie hopes (as his life’s work is proving their existence)? Or is it something else altogether?
This was a really lovely read. The kids were intelligent and level headed for the most part. There was suspense, intrigue, magic, terror, and even a little first-love romance woven in which was very cute.
Charlie was awful. Truly awful. And there were a lot of very convenient situations towards the end of the story, but then I remembered that the book is aimed for ages 12 and up so it made sense to wrap up the way it did. The adult cynic in me was appeased.
If you wish to be captured in pages of fantasy and lore, I would read this book. Sam’s father, in search of Bigfoot, takes her on trips all the time. They used to be full of magic and family togetherness but now that Nan, Sam’s mother, is gone the trips just bring pain. This time though, they actually find something and it ignites the spark the trips had been missing. It may not be Bigfoot but it sure is magical. Ash, Sam’s new mythical friend, only has three days left before he has to go home or he’ll be trapped on Earth, no longer able to live forever. During this race against the clock Ash reveals to Sam that she has mystical powers, too. She needs to figure out how to control these to help Ash, but can she take on that much? After getting into this book I was unable to put it down. It is a five star book. The writing took me away and put me in a whole other world. It made me sympathize with characters and made me feel the same anger they did. My heart raced while reading and I dreaded leaving this world and cannot wait to start the next book. Review by Rafferty Hill Age 13
Before I begin my review for Ash (Journeys of the Immortal book 1) by Joel Thomas Feldman, I would personally like to thank the author for the opportunity to read this ARC and I have reviewed it honestly.
A quircky and adventurous tale, Ash by Joel Thomas Feldman is the epic coming of age fantasy introduction to the Journeys of the Immortal series. Dragged away to hunt the elusive Big Foot with her dad, Sam discovers a world of magic, myths and danger.
Ash features, but is not limited to, the following themes: ○ Middle age ○ Fantasy ○ Coming of age ○ Mythology ○ Magic ○ Family drama
My overall rating for Ash is...
3.5 stars!
This book was a fun and fast paced middle age fantasy. I loved the characters, and the development between Sam and the other characters. The story was magical, well written and imaginative. A perfect book for the whole family. Also, how gorgeous is that cover!
Let me begin by saying that I enjoyed the beginning of this book! The hook had me on the edge of my seat, and I was halfway through the book in a matter of hours. The plot is extremely well-organized, and the characters are endearing. Sam is a curious little girl with a sensitivity to a mysterious power. I liked how her character developed throughout the book, as well as how close she is to her father. Tommy appears later as someone she does not want by her side, but who ends up being the person she was closest to.
The author managed to show in this book that there are no villains in real life but only people who are deceived by human emotions, such as power and money. The story kept me entertained and I had fun reading each part of it.
The ending nearly killed me! I was disappointed to discover that there were no more pages for me to read! I am looking forward to reading the second book!
It’s a good story with sweetness to it. I loved the relationship development between the main character and her dad. Impossible not to smile when they interact.
I think this book is most suitable for school kids, about middle grade. It has good characters, a moral to learn, and of course magic.
Also it is really fast-paced, so I read it in one day. An easy read.
Ash pulled me out of the world I live in and brought into a mythical world. I literally couldn't wait to come home from work each night to dive into this book. Plus, it looks amazing in my reading room!
I loved the story. I read books to make sure I can recommend them to girls from my GirlScout troop. The story of Sam and her father was perfect for my troop. The camping, the adventure, the suspense and the mystery were interesting but the relationship between Sam and her dad stole my heart.
