How the hell did I get here? Jason’s gaze flicked down to his right hand, covered in blood – his and the monster’s – and glimpsed the black ring cradled so gently on his finger. “Oh, right,” he whispered with a desperate grin. The stirring monster once again drew his focus. They both stood at the same time, fists raised. Finality hung in the air. This would be the last bout… for one of them, at least.
Jason Verse lives a quiet life with his Uncle Jeb on their family estate. Yet Jason hides a personal war against an emptiness in him, a near physical force that rages against any purpose in his life and destroys any chance he gets of connecting to anything or anyone. This quiet life is shattered when he finds a black ring hidden deep in the family manor and is pulled into a history older than the ancient Verse family. The ring chooses him, granting him astounding powers and designating him as the champion of Earth, a Protector among the alien realms. Finally here he has a purpose strong enough to fight the void that lingers so deep in him. But in the end he must still choose: accept his new duty or fall under the crushing rage of the void.
He is thrust into a universe of amazing and terrifying races, advanced technology, and magic. With the help of his surly uncle, his best friend Dave, and an alien who seems to know an awful lot about the Verse family. Jason must dive deep into new worlds of mysterious and danger. It is up to him and his ragtag group of friends and family to stand against a force that threatens to wash over Earth and control it with an iron fist.
Will Jason have the strength and fortitude to stand against the malevolent forces threating his world and to the endless darkness in himself? Only time will tell.
Kyle T. Davis grew up in rural Oregon, spending time working on the job site with his father, a contractor, shooting guns, and playing Dungeons and Dragons with his friends. From digging ditches, roofing, farm work, to Project Manager on million dollar plus projects, Kyle has lived a life of hard work, completing this novel while working full time and starting his family. Though he lives in small town now with his amazing wife and three beautiful children, the country boy in him has never left. His faith in Jesus Christ is a major factor in all he does. From leading and raising his family to his interactions with all around him. He loves lame jokes, D&D (3.5 for life), guns, knives, books, science fiction, fantasy, bourbon and most any fine spirit, and of course writing. He looks forward to producing more works and hopes his writing can create characters who are role models for the next generation.

A Protector's Beginning was the perfect opening for what will become a great series starring Jason Verse. The young hero of the novel is part James Bond and part Prince Caspian. Set in modern-day America, young Jason is a senior in high school thrown into extreme circumstances practically forced on him by a fateful inheritance. His genuine honesty & humility is what keeps the story grounded when the action begins to take off. The first member of his team, is his close friend Dave, who is practically the veritable Q to his Bond. Their camaraderie is heartfelt and sets the core tone of what will become Jason's support and back-up. Blending a mix of science fiction and fantasy genres, Davis lays out what it would be like for an average 17-year-old American to be thrown into a role best dealt with by someone with twice as much experience and the understanding that our universe holds many alien species and wonders far beyond our limited comprehension as human beings. Additional characters bring added humor and help to fill in the gaps in Jason's lack of knowledge regarding magic and advanced technology. Davis writes action scenes very well. I felt as if I was there alongside Jason throwing every punch and also taking every painful hit. His descriptions paint a visual of new worlds and life forms very clearly. It was easy for me to lose myself in those scenes. I look forward to reading more about Jason verse and the role he plays as Protector. I also look forward to seeing what this wonderful new author, Kyle T Davis, has in store for us in the future.
The Green Lantern meets Star Trek in this story of a teenage boy who finds a ring and becomes Earth's Protector. Davis excels at writing action scenes, pulling the reader along at a quick pace. His worldbuilding is superb and detailed. I really enjoy each of the characters. This book does a great job of setting up a series that I hope we get more of. I'm not a gun person, though, so much of that aspect of the book went over my head.
To describe A Protector’s Beginning—A beautiful combination of humor, action, and magic all under a Sci-Fi umbrella.
Fantasy books were always my favorites as a kid and I never read much other genres. In fact, A Protector’s Beginning was the first Sci-Fi book I’ve ever read in 25 years of living. And I picked the perfect book to dive into this genre with!
I had read “The Sparta”, Kyle’s published Sci-Fi short story, before I read his novel but I knew I wanted to read A Protector’s Beginning. I love the style Kyle writes in as well as the summary for the book, and I was not disappointed in the least with its content!
I can’t count how many times I found myself laughing and smiling with the witty humor, and falling in love with all of Kyle’s characters! Mephittus, Jason (of course), Dave, and Baydin are my favorite characters! (Jeb comes in close behind though.) Each character is unique in their personalities, appearances, and their goals are well-defined.
The thing the blew me away the most was the descriptions. As I expected of a Sci-Fi story, I knew the foreign creatures and cultures Jason encountered would need to come across clearly. I was able to envision each and every being in the universe of A Protector’s Beginning. I could construct visual images in my mind of everything, which I can’t express how much I loved. Kyle was able to help me visual his creatures with his clear writing style and references to animals I can recognize, which I think is an amazing use of imagery. As a reader, I’ve always been fascinated by how words can create images and play scenes like a movie in my head. That’s what I got from this book.
This is the first book in a series I’m already hooked on! I’m so excited to see what’s in store for Jason and his allies in the next installment!
"A Protector's Beginning" is a mixture of Harry Potter and a fantastic world of aliens and other realms, with a splash of action film. We follow Jason Verse, the first human protector in a long time, as he maneuvers his way through the challenges of his new job, trying to make the best of the fact that he doesn't have a teacher who can teach him the basics. On his way he is supported by his family, friends and new allies. I can say right away that I was a little disappointed with the book. The setting that the author came up with was very promising and I was immediately thrilled to discover it. But especially towards the end, the story felt rushed. To me, the path to the plot of this book, from the initial world-building to the main story, didn't feel fluid. It was more like a switch suddenly thrown. Also, I'm not sure if the threat that was chosen helped the story develop. My opinion is that it would have been better to reduce the threat and not yet fully reveal who Jason's opponents are. I know there's still a secret to who might be pulling the strings in the bigger picture, but I still think the series would have done better if the second book would have to provide all of the information about the adversaries. Not to get it wrong, I could only be so disappointed because the book pulled me into its world at the beginning. The characters were well written (favorites: Baydin, Mephittis) and the idea of the world was interesting. There is still a lot of potential for the sequels that are obviously to come and I will also look at the short story that came out. I think it was a good, solid book, with a few clichés, but an exciting world. The writing style was easy to read and apart from a few doubled words, I can't find anything to complain about.
This book is a mix of Harry Potter and Batman for young adult readers. I say this book is like Harry Potter because of a few familiar nods to Platform 9 3/4 and Dobby. In this book, Jason also has a network of close knit friends and mentors that help him grapple with magic and the responsibility of being a protector. Then I say Batman because Jason chooses brawn over magic when fighting evil on his own Earth soil. A lot of guns and blood, but in a way a violent video game would be suitable for young adult audiences.
This book had a slow start, but once Jason Verse starts realm hopping in Chapter 3, the book was quick to read and fun to explore. My favorite thing about this read was the weird goops, foods, and alien eyes. They were descriptive and imaginative! I also liked how plausible and relatable Jason was and the situations he ran into. The playful jabs and sarcastic banter from Jason’s dialog like “Piss and a half” made me laugh. When Jason is starting out, he is no expert even though he really wants to jump in with both feet. He gets into funny (and dangerous) situations like a sulfur lake. It makes you root for him.
This book is the beginning of a series, but is a standalone story (which I liked because I hate cliffhangers!). I hope the author takes us to see more realms; but there might be more danger in Earth realm too.
A Protector's Beginning isn't in my usual go-to genre, but I am so glad I gave it a shot! I loved it!
This action-packed book had me turning page after page. The characters are all great and had me rooting for them throughout the entire story and the world-building is top-notch. My favorite thing about this book, however, is the author's writing style. Davis is definitely a skilled writer and I look forward to the future books in this series.
5/5 stars and I HIGHLY recommend A Protector's Beginning!
Sci fi meets action adventure with a kick! When teenager Jason Verse finds a family heirloom hidden for decades, he learns that not only is Earth not alone in the universe, he is now tasked with being its sole protector. While Jason struggles to find his place among the realms and train to fulfill his duties, he uncovers a conspiracy which threatens humanity. With a little help from his friends and some unexpected allies, Jason must race against time to thwart plans set in motion before his birth, and embrace his destiny. Action packed and full of intrigue, A Protector’s Beginning delivers a punch.
This very well-written sci-fi has it all: action, adventure, magic and humor. Well defined characters and a page-tuning plot. Really well done. This is an action packed adventure from beginning to end.
Jason becomes Earth's protector. He has lots to learn to take on others determined to cause havoc on Earth. Kyle T. Davis has packed a lot into this great book. I enjoyed it greatly!
