I love the whole concept of the story, especially the message, the take away lesson: The standard of beauty in our society is cliché and we don't need to conform to it. But I guess this is also the reason why I can't bring myself to rate it with 5 stars.
I've realized that this is another case of "It's not the book, it's me" , because no matter how golden and relevant this story is, I still can't bring myself to fully enjoy it because I kinda hate the trope. The ugly duckling trope or the insecure love interest trope, which this book has, was never a to-go-to trope for me, in fact it was included in my least favorites (due to personal reasons I won't explain).
* spoiler alert!!! *
The sole reason why they sort of separated, why they never got together, is because of Aurora's insecurities. I mean, I know I understand it. Aurora needs to love herself first before fully committing to Maxwell. But understanding it doesn't mean I have to love it, too.
Reading Cliché was a whole ride of me being understanding and being frustrated at the same time. I felt empathy and pain for Aurora and I cheered for her in her quest to find self love. But I can't help but to be frustrated, too, not just towards her but with also the people around her. That does make sense?
Like I said, this was all on me. The book is good but how I rated this was largely affected by my feelings after reading it and my preferences. It's too personal for my liking. However, I'll likely still recommend this to other booknerds and then maybe, they will fully commit to it and enjoy the story, something that I failed to do.
All in all, Candy series was a fun and light read for me. I will definitely miss the compound. Someday, in the near future, I know I'm gonna revisit it again if I'm looking for fluffy reads.
