“...ইসলামের ঐতিহাসিক ভূমিকা আদতে এম এন রায়ের একটি অসাধারণ মূল্যায়নধর্মী রচনা। রায়ের নির্বাচিত রচনাবলির সম্পাদক শিবনারায়ণরায় এই রচনাটি সম্পর্কে ১৯৩২ সালের ৭ ডিসেম্বর এলেনকে লেখা গ্রন্থকারের একটি চিঠির কথা উল্লেখ করে বলেন যে, পুস্তিকাটির প্রথম খসড়া চূড়ান্ত হয়েছিল ১৯৩২ সালের দ্বিতীয়ার্ধে। ইসলামের ঐতিহাসিক ভূমিকার মূল্যায়ন সুন্দরভাবে শেষ করার কথা উল্লেখ করে শ্রী রায় তার সন্তোষও প্রকাশ করেছিলেন ঐ চিঠিতে।... বস্তুত, এটিই শ্রী রায়ের সবচেয়ে জনপ্রিয় রচনা। বিশেষ করে ভারত, পাকিস্তান এবং বাংলাদেশের শিক্ষিত মুসলমানদের মধ্যে পুস্তিকাটি অন্ত্যন্ত জনপ্রিয়।

এম এন রায় জেলে বসে এমন সময়ে পুস্তিকাটি লেখেন, যখন এই উপমহাদেশের হিন্দু এবং মুসলিম সম্প্রদায় একে অপরের থেকে দ্রুত দূরে সরে যাচ্ছিলেন। ১৯২৫ সালে উভয় সম্প্রদায়ের আস্থাভাজন নেতা দেশবন্ধু চিত্তরঞ্জন দাস মারা যান। এই সময়ে শিক্ষিত মুসলমানদের মধ্যে সমষ্টিগতভাবে জাতিসত্তার আকাঙ্ক্ষা জোরদার হয়ে উঠেছিল এবং হিন্দু নেতাদের মধ্যে দেশবন্ধুর মতো সবার আস্থাভাজন নেতা বিরল ছিলেন।”

About the author

Manabendra Nath Roy (1887 – 1954), born Narendra Nath Bhattacharya, was an Indian revolutionary, radical activist and political theorist. Roy was a founder of the communist parties in Mexico and India, and a delegate to congresses of the Communist International and Russia's aide to China. Following the rise of Joseph Stalin, Roy left the mainline communist movement to pursue an independent radical politics. In 1940 Roy was instrumental in the formation of the Radical Democratic Party, an organisation in which he played a leading role for much of the decade of the 1940s. Roy later moved away from Marxism to become an exponent of the philosophy of radical humanism.
