Evernight is the first book in an exciting new middle-grade series featuring dark magic and witches.
Orphan Larabelle Fox, Lara, is a Tosher in the Silver Kingdom, which means she treasure hunts in the sewers. It’s a dangerous job but someone has to do it. One day whilst out hunting she comes across a wooden box. The box is linked to the Doomsday Spell and evil beings including Shadow Jack and Mrs. Hester are looking for it.
Lara soon finds herself the target of unwanted attention but can she protect the box or will the world be ruined?
The book opens with a fast-paced chase scene in which a woman called Jenny Winter is being chased through the streets by the fearsome Shadow Jack as he tries to get the wooden box from her, one of the last protectors of the box. We then move onto the present day with Lara in the sewers looking for treasure when she comes up against some bullies.
The pages are filled with adventure, friendship, magic, and mayhem which had me flying through the book not wanting to put it down. The book fills your imagination which is helped along by the full-on descriptions and fascinating scenery, which are out of this world!
Lara is such a wonderful character with a big heart, especially for someone who has been through so much in her young life. I was rooting for her from the very beginning and adored her personality and bravery.
The evil beings are not too scary for younger children but they are mildly sinister, especially Mrs. Hester who likes to steal other souls to stay young.
Overall the book is the perfect fantasy read for middle-graders with so much happening all the time and a good vs evil plot to keep the kids on the edge of their seats.

Ok, I think it’s now fair to say this author is now a fav. He is one I will definitely always be on the lookout for more from. This book was AMAZING!! His books just get better & better. This was pretty dark at times, so I would say upper MG(just in my opinion). But I loved that. I love my darker MGs. There was so much mystery surrounding certain aspects of the story. There was adventure, tons of suspense, magic, & heaps of danger! Shadow Jack TERRIFIES me, I despised him, & at the same time I had so much pity for him! Talk about great writing! Mrs. Hester, however, I have no pity for-talk about evil. The witches, the different “types”, & the their whole backstory was so interesting, & I loved everything about that..& loved the whole magic system. The story of the Evernight in itself was so creative, terrifying, & just so imaginative. The locket, the bird, & the tree on top of it just..🤯🤯 So good. Lara is our main character. She is so kickbutt amazing. So brave & strong. She learns so much about her past, & who she is meant to be. So amazing to read her become who she is. Her best friend is Joe & I loved him. I just wanted to hug him. He was so amazing. Double Eight was such a precious soul. I really wanted to give him a big hug-he needed one. I adored him so much. Each kid was important & special in their own way. When looking through his books, I discovered there will be a sequel to this out next year! That has me so excited!! I definitely want more from this world/these characters! This is also blurbed by M.G. Leonard, Peter Bunzl, & Anna James-so that should speak for itself as well. A gorgeous cover from one illustrator Amy Grimes, & above each chapter heading there are illustrations done by another- Julia Iredale that are just amazing!!😍😍 I highly recommend this!!💜💜

This is a really strong middle-grade book with a wealth of world-building, unique characters and vibrancy throughout. Immediately readers are introduced to a large cast of characters, each developed well and with stand-out personalities. Despite this, I found it progressively more difficult to feel invested in the plot, or the characters in truth, frequently finding myself drifting from the story.
Lara spends her days searching the underground of the city for treasure; people like Lara are termed, "Toshers" which I found a bit unfortunate! Within the Silver Kingdom where Lara lives strange things begin to happen which she tries to brush away as her imagination, but soon she can't ignore that there is a dark magic simmering in the shadows of the city and a mysterious figure hiding in the sewers seemingly preying upon the Toshers.
The story opens with a number of short chapters introducing key characters and the plot begins to unfold very quickly with whispers of dark magic on the horizon. Throughout it was apparent how much planning a novel of this nature takes, and how successfully Ross Mackenzie seamlessly brings this together. I had seen other reviews before reading this book which warned about quick changes between scenes, locations and perspectives being slightly confusing but actually I felt these worked really well to keep me hooked at the beginning. I'd imagine an adult book by this author would be really incredible and uniquely creative.
So, with that said, it's hard to pinpoint why this story was so difficult to connect with. Ultimately I think I was maybe not the ideal audience. Typically middle-grade isn't a problem for me if the characters are fun and well developed, which they are, and actually some of them are quite eerie, dark characters which is often a bit caricature in middle grade and absolutely isn't here. But despite these things there was just something missing; I didn't feel like I knew the characters very well at all.
Regardless, Evernight is a highly imaginative, colourful novel with surprising moments, a dark and magical plot and a plethora of characters to experience it with. There was just a lack of emotional connection for me which ultimately impacted upon my enjoyment.

Hmm, egentlig en meget sød og spændende historie med et fedt univers, men der er bare noget... off ved det
Jeg ved ikke, om det er fordi dysterheden i teksten clasher for meget med det ret simple sprog (det er jo middlegrade), der er bare et eller andet der gør, at det ikke helt funger for mig.
Der er også rittig mange informationer hele tiden, men det føles alligevel som om, at man kun skraber i overfladen, og så bliver tingene en anelse forvirrende
men tror den passer perfekt til en lidt yngre målgruppe (sjovt nok også den målgruppe, den henvender sig til)

Będę powtarzać to do końca życia – CZYTAJCIE WIECZNOMROK!
Zatraciłam się w tej pozycji a akcja porwała mnie od pierwszej strony, od pierwszego zdania. To fantastyczna, najeżona niebezpieczeństwami, przygodą oraz pełna mroku książka która podbiła moje serce i sprawiła że w ciemno sięgnę po każdą kolejną książkę autora wydaną w Polsce. Nie mam jedynie pojęcia, dlaczego nic innego jeszcze nie zostało przetłumaczone. Od trzech dni żyję tą wspaniałą historią i wiem że szybko o niej nie zapomnę. To doskonała pozycja dla młodzieży, nawet tej młodszej, która dopiero zaczyna przygodę z czytaniem, chociaż i mnie, dorosłą osobę niesamowicie ujęła. Tak bardzo żałuję, że nie było mi dane ją przeczytać gdy dopiero zagłębiałam się w świat książek, bo to książka dzięki której można zakochać się w czytaniu.
Larabelle Lisica jest sierotą, i praktycznie od zawsze jej sposobem aby przeżyć było przeczesywanie kanałów. Doskonale wie, gdzie szukać aby znaleźć prawdziwe skarby i gdzie swoje znaleziska wymienić na monety za które kupi jedzenie. Świat w którym żyje jest pełen niebezpieczeństw – zamieszkują go pozbawieni duszy białodzieje, oraz obdarzeni potężną mocą jędzuchy, którzy wywołują strach gdy tylko znajdą się w pobliżu. Pewnego dnia podczas przeszukiwania kanałów, w ręce Lary trafia tajemnicza szkatułka. Nie wie, że jej zawartość skrywa potężną moc, i jest poszukiwania przez mroczną Panią Hester, która za jej pomocą chce zdobyć nieograniczoną władzę. Nie wie też, że przez to znalezisko dziewczyna wpadnie w wir wydarzeń i odkryje prawdę o sobie, a także o świecie w którym żyje. A po piętach cały czas będzie deptał jej ktoś straszny; ktoś, kto nie rzuca cienia…
Wiecznomrok to pełna tajemnic i magii powieść od której trudno się oderwać, to ten typ książki, przy której czytaniu mówimy „że jeszcze tylko jeden rozdział”, ale na tym jednym się nie kończy. Ross MacKenzie za sprawą swojej powieści rzucił na mnie urok, czar tak potężny, który sprawił że po odłożeniu książki natychmiast wracałam do niej myślami, snując wyobrażenia o tym co wydarzy się w kolejnych rozdziałach. A te są pełne zwrotów akcji, magii oraz tempa która z każdą stroną przyśpiesza. Fascynująca rzecz traktująca o walce dobra ze złem, z cudownymi postaciami których po prostu nie da się nie polubić. Opisy niektórych wydarzeń sprawiały że miałam gęsią skórkę na ciele, język którym włada autor jest tak magiczny i niesamowity, czytanie „Wiecznomroku” to prawdziwa uczta dla wyobraźni. Kocham z całego serca, z pewnością trafi do topki tego roku (jak nie do topki życia), i będę polecała i wspominała o niej przy każdej możliwej okazji. CZYTAJCIE WIECZNOMROK!

Ich liebe dieses Buch! Es könnte sehr gut eines von denen werden, die ich noch öfter lesen werde.
Die Atmosphäre ist verwunschen, die bildhafte Sprache und das Setting mit dezenten Steampunk-Elementen erinnern an ein düsteres Märchen und ich war sofort gefangen. Keine Ahnung, warum manche hier schreiben, es zöge sich anfangs oder man könnte sich in die Figuren nicht hineinversetzen.
Ja, anfangs gibt es mehrere Perspektiven, von denen man nicht sofort weiß, wie sie zusammenhängen wären - aber das kennt man doch aus epischer Fantasy und zu sehen, wie die Handlungsstränge nach und nach verwoben werden, ist ein echtes Vergnügen.
Wir beginnen mit Schattenjack, dem Mann ohne Schatten, der der bösen Magierin mit dem gestohlenen Gesicht dient und Angst und Tod mit sich bringt - Hinweis an der Stelle, es gibt einige für ein Kinderbuch ziemlich brutale Szenen, Schattenjack tötet seine Opfer und frisst ihre Seelen. Er wurde auch zu einer meiner Lieblingsfiguren, ich könnte ein ganzes Buch nur über ihn lesen.
Dann ist da die Protagonistin Larabelle Fox, ein tapferes Mädchen mit großem Herz, das in der Kanalisation der Stadt nach verlorenen Dingen sucht, und der kleine Joe Littlefood, der für seine alte Grandma sorgen muss. Doppelacht, ein weißer Magier, die die seelenlosen Sklaven der bösen Magierin sind, hat einen kleinen Teil seiner Seele behalten und sehnt sich nach Freiheit. Und noch eine Reihe anderer Figuren, die ich allesamt sehr gerne begleitet habe.
Etwas irreführend ist vielleicht der Klapptext, denn die dort beschriebenen Ereignisse beginnen eigentlich erst ab Hälfte des Buches so richtig. Vorher muss erst einiges passieren, damit es überhaupt dazu kommt und alle Figuren in der richtigen Position sind, wenn die dämonische Immernacht befreit wird, um die Welt zu verschlingen, und die Rettung von einem kleinen Uhrwerkvogel abhängt, der in einem kleinen Kästchen in der Kanalisation schlummert...
Eine absolute Leseempfehlung für alle, die es düster und märchenhaft mögen!

Jeg havde ikke hørt om Ross Mackenzie før jeg gav mig til at læse første bind i serien Evernight.
Bogen hedder Det Evige Mørke og forsiden er simpelthen så fin med genskinseffekt😍👏
Selve historien er dog til den dystre side. Vi er i en verden, hvor der har været en magtkamp mellem de to heksegrupper de gode Mirakelmagerne og de onde hvide hekse.
De hvide hekse er slavebundne til den tudsegamle og ultra ondskabsfulde mrs. Hester. Hun har slået sig sammen med kongen af Sølvriget og nu er Mirakelmagerne jaget vildt og udskældte i hele kongeriget.
Mrs. Hester har planer om at slippe den ultimative ondskab fri - Det evige mørke, som vil udslette alt på jorden og til at hjælpe sig, har hun en magtfuld djinn, som bliver kaldt Skyggemanden.
Vores hovedperson er den forældreløse Lara, der lever af at finde skatte i kloakkerne under byen. En dag støder hun på en sær lille æske og før hun ved af det, har hun den frygtindgydende Skyggemanden efter sig.
Jeg må indrømme at jeg ikke var helt hooked til at begynde med. Historien var liiidt lang tid om at komme i gang, men heldigvis blev bogen mere og mere spændende - ja, faktisk også lidt creepy😊
Hvordan tingene helt hænger sammen bliver først rigtig forklaret i den sidste halvdel af bogen og det var jeg ikke stor fan af. Jeg havde været mere tilpas i historien, hvis jeg havde fået mere at vide fra starten.
Jeg kunne rigtig godt lide idéen med mrs. Hesters sjælløse hvide hekse og Det evige mørke, der ruller ind over byer og forvandler indbyggerne til tomme skaller - blottede for følelser og empati.
Udviklingen af historien tager fart ca. midtvejs og jeg endte faktisk med at blive ret begejstret for den dramatiske og hæsblæsende slutning😃👏
Ross Mackenzie har fundet på et interessant univers og det bliver spændende at se, hvor han tager historien hen i bind nummer to😊👍
Historien er noget børnet skrevet, men den udvikler sig ret blodigt, så jeg vil anbefale fra ca. 10 år, hvis man er en lidt hårdfør læser🤓📚

Historien er noget børnet skrevet, men den udvikler sig ret blodigt, så jeg vil anbefale fra ca. 10 år, hvis man er en lidt hårdfør læser🤓📚

Wiecznomrok to bardzo fajna książka dla młodszego czytelnika. Mamy tutaj magię, dających się lubić głównych bohaterów, postacie, których nie da się lubić i ciekawą historię, która opiera się na walce dobra ze złem. Jest raczej zero-jedynkowy, co w tego typu historiach (grupa docelowa) mi nie przeszkadza.
Podobało mi się, rozdziały były krótkie i konkretne, lekko napisane, fajny styl, bardzo szybko ją przeczytałam, a przy tym nie pojawiły się niedopowiedzenia.
Chociaż... akcja brnęła bardzo szybko, było trochę wydarzeń na siłę, by pasowały pod bieg fabuły, do tego dostawaliśmy przeskoki, jeśli chodzi o dotarcie z punktu A do punktu B, więc to zdecydowanie nie jest powieść doskonała, nie ma w niej też zbyt wiele oryginalności, ale nie odbiera to jej uroku.
Ja bardzo dobrze spędziłam przy niej czas, chociaż brakuje jej rozbudowania (zarówno świata, fabuły, jak i charakterów bohaterów), które tak kocham.

En bog om magi, mod og venskab.
Den forældreløse Lara lever af de ting hun finder i byens kloakker. Men da en skyggeløs mand begynder at true hendes venner, og mørket truer med at slå alle ihjel, så vågner Laras magiske evner.
Bogen er skrevet i et forholdsvist simpelt sprog og selve historien er letforståelig og temmelig forudsigelig, derfor fristes jeg til at sige at målgruppen er de 9-12 årige. Men bogen er også temmeligt drabelig - vold, mord og skabninger uden sjæle optræder flere steder, og det gør at jeg alligevel ikke kan anbefale bogen til så unge læsere.
Personligt blev jeg aldrig rigtig fanget af historien, den var ok, men så heller ikke mere end det.

Ein Mittelklasse Buch. 3/4 des Buches hat es wirklich so vor sich hingeplätschert, das letzte Teil des Buches hat es richtig Fahrt aufgenommen. 😍 Lara mochte ich sehr, auch wenn ich mir bei ihr, sehr lange nicht im Klaren war, was sie für eine Schlüssel Person ist.
Ich hoffe trotzdem das es hier eine Reihe wird. Ich habe diese Art der Magie sehr geliebt und würde gern wieder dort eintauchen. 🥰

I really enjoyed this book as it is set in a kingdom with witches and magic🧙♂️🌠Some bits were a bit dark so I would give it 4 and a half stars but as that isnt an option, I give it 5 STARS!!!!!!!!!🌟❤

Darum geht’s:
Larabelle Fox ist eine 13-jährige Waise, die sich als Tosherin in der Kanalisation ihr Geld verdient. Tosher such in der Kanalisation nach wertvollen Gegenständen, die sie dann verkaufen können. Dabei findet Lara einen sehr wertvollen Gegenstand, der ihr Leben vollkommen ändert. Denn die Beraterin des Königs ist auf der Suche nach diesem Kästchen und lässt nichts unversucht an dieses zu gelangen. Hilfe hat sie dabei von Schattenjack, einem Dschinn, der jeden ihrer Befehle befolgt. Bald schon ist Lara auf der Flucht und erfährt auch noch Einiges über ihre verstorbenen Eltern.
Meine Meinung:
Zuallererst hat mich das Cover unglaublich angesprochen. Der helle Vogel mit dem mechanischem Inneren macht sich auf dem dunklen Hintergrund wirklich gut. Außerdem passt es auch sehr gut zur Geschichte.
Der Schreibstil war sehr locker und leicht und man kam dadurch auch ziemlich schnell voran. Die Kapitel waren alle auch sehr kurz gehalten. Man merkt, dass es ein Buch für die jüngere Lesergruppe ist. Die Beschreibungen waren sehr bildhaft und man konnte sich alles sehr genau vorstellen.
Die Handlung an sich klang auch wirklich spannend. Jedoch habe ich doch irgendwie etwas anderes erwartet. An manchen Stellen hat sich das Buch doch ganz schön gezogen und mir kam es so vor, als wäre vieles für die eigentlich Handlung einfach nicht so relevant gewesen. Auf der anderen Seite wiederum gab es einiges, dass hätte man doch noch etwas näher erläutern können. Vor allem am Ende kam dann alles auf einmal Schlag auf Schlag und Konflikte wurden mir auch zu einfach gelöst.
Die Charaktere waren wie schon gesagt sehr bildhaft beschrieben, sodass man sich diese gut vorstellen konnte. Doch ich habe leider keinen richtigen Draht zu diesen gefunden. Alle Charaktere sowie auch die Protagonistin Lara blieben für mich eher blass und es fehlte ihnen an Tiefe.
Was mich auch noch ein wenig gestört hat, waren die ständigen wechselnden Perspektiven. Die Geschichte wurde meiner Ansicht nach einfach aus zu vielen Blickwinkeln verschiedener Figuren erzählt.

I did a little squeal when this appeared in my book post - thank you very much Andersen Press! I loved both The Nowhere Emporium and The Elsewhere Emporium so was extremely excited to read this.
From the very first few lines, it is clear that this is a much darker book than either of the author's previous two and I really loved it. Reading with my teacher hat on though, I would definitely recommend this for Year 5 and upwards (age 9+) when the author's previous books would be perfectly suitable and enjoyable for a younger audience too.
I adored the world-building, particularly how magic spells are created and used, Shadow Jack is truly terrifying and I found myself feeling quite tense and wondering what would happen to Larabelle.
Excellent!

Kiedy zaczęłam czytać Wiecznomrok pierwsze, co mnie zszokowało, to wiek bohaterów. No nie powiem, 13 lat to jednak trochę dla mnie za mało, zwłaszcza, że raczej staram się stronić od YA, ale, ale! Nie zniechęcałam się i czytałam dalej. Było przyjemnie, szybko się czytało i wciągało.
Trochę mnie jednak rozczarował świat, dialogi i charaktery bohaterów, chociaż może rzeczywiście jest to książka dla bardzo młodego czytelnika, który nie potrzebuje rozbudowanych opisów świata i dialogów, żeby docenić wszystkie aspekty - nie wiem, może przemawia przeze mnie wybujałe ego XD
Bardzo podobał mi się motyw magii, który może świeży i oryginalny nie był, ale bardzo zaciekawiła mnie jego konstrukcja. Jestem na tyle zaintrygowana, że z chęcią sięgnę po kontynuację.
Powieść, choć można założyć, że skierowana jest do młodego czytelnika, czy nawet dziecka, to ma w sobie nieco mroku, takiego z dobrym smakiem, lekko brutalnego, ale zarazem uświadamiającego. Jest również obecny motyw zemsty i jego skutki, co bardzo dobrze autorowi wyszło. Poruszony jest również temat niewolnictwa, straty i poszukiwania samego siebie. Dla mnie bardzo spoko. Lubię, kiedy książki mają ukryty głębszy sens, ale nie jest to zbyt nachalne.
Jeśli miałabym komuś polecić, to zdecydowanie fanom Harry'ego Pottera, Percy'ego Jacksona i Gregora.

Jej świat obraca się wokół przetrwania, unikania białodziejów na usługach Pani Hester oraz drżenia przed dziką magią stosowaną przez jędzuchy. Wszystko to ulega zmianie w momencie, gdy pewna drewniana szkatułka wpada w jej ręce. Na dziewczynę czeka wielka przygoda, a – tym samym – przed czytelnikiem ukazuje się nowa odsłona świata, w który właśnie wkroczył.
Biorąc pod uwagę główną grupę odbiorców, do których została skierowana historia z „Wiecznomroku”, Ross MacKenzie udowadnia, że można rozbudować opowieść tak, by zaczarowała ona młodych czytelników i pochłonęła ich na czas lektury. Przede wszystkim, by nadać opowieści klimatu, dostosowany zostaje język – tworzone są nawet oryginalne obelgi odpowiadające całemu uniwersum. Takiej fantastycznej młodzieżówki nie czytałam od dłuższego czasu i mam tu na myśli zarówno tematykę, jak i epitet, którym można ją określić.

My last read was Evernight, a brilliant piece of middle grade magic that won the 2021 Scottish Book Trust Teenage Book Award. Thirteen year-old Larabelle Fox is a Tosher, someone that works in the sewers to find lost treasures. It’s tough, smelly work and Lara has been doing it to make ends meet since she lost both of her parents and ran away from the city orphanage. One day Lara finds a small wooden box with a clockwork bird inside it. Little does she know that she’s just found the Doomsday Spell, the only thing that Mrs. Hester and her army of white witches need to release the Evernight. Full of friendship, adventure and wizardry, I loved this one. Just read this sentence about the nature of a soul;
“But what was a soul? If you could take all the best bits of a person, the love, the happiness, the good things they’d done, the mark they’d left on the world, the part of them that lived on in other people’s hearts and memories even long after they’d gone….that was the soul, wasn’t

I loved the atmosphere and the writing style. I think the author did a really good job of the world building and the magic system.
What was lacking for me was the characters, as this is a children's books they weren't very developed, I didnt connect with them very much. I thought the villain was good, mrs hester, and I really loved shadow jack. I really think they should have woven mrs hesters back story into this as at the start we were told she we wronged by the witches in some way and wanted revenge that's why she unleashed the evernight and after it wiped out the westerly witches she could stop it with the doomsday spell and control all magic.
I liked the concept of the white witches too, that they were controlled by mrs hester and she had their souls to keep youthful.
I think the plot was a bit lacking toward the middle and end, just wasnt as exciting as the start was, Joe got stabbed but when he smashed the mirror the souls healed him, I dont understand how. And when Lara had to give up her souls to work the spell she was unaffected at the end, I thought she would turn evil or something, she did try to kill shadow jack was that it? I wanted it to effect her for longer as it just resolved too quickly. Maybe in the next book.
I liked the downfall of mrs hester, when the mirror smashed she turned old and ran away, I know she'll be back.
I liked the magic system it was unlike anything I've ever seen before, so its set in a world with magic called hag magic, the spells are kept in glass vials and loaded into a wand, the witches learn how to create the spells and use them but anyone can use the spells I think but that's uncontrolled magic.
I'm not sure if I'll read the next book as there wasnt as much twists and turns in the story as I would have liked and the characters, Lara, Joe and double eight were missing something for me, as I kind of expected them to be a bit more grown up. I think this would have worked well as a young adult book.

I really think they should have woven mrs hesters back story into this as at the start we were told she we wronged by the witches in some way and wanted revenge that's why she unleashed the evernight and after it wiped out the westerly witches she could stop it with the doomsday spell and control all magic.
I liked the concept of the white witches too, that they were controlled by mrs hester and she had their souls to keep youthful.
I think the plot was a bit lacking toward the middle and end, just wasnt as exciting as the start was, Joe got stabbed but when he smashed the mirror the souls healed him, I dont understand how. And when Lara had to give up her souls to work the spell she was unaffected at the end, I thought she would turn evil or something, she did try to kill shadow jack was that it? I wanted it to effect her for longer as it just resolved too quickly. Maybe in the next book.
I liked the downfall of mrs hester, when the mirror smashed she turned old and ran away, I know she'll be back.
I liked the magic system it was unlike anything I've ever seen before, so its set in a world with magic called hag magic, the spells are kept in glass vials and loaded into a wand, the witches learn how to create the spells and use them but anyone can use the spells I think but that's uncontrolled magic.
I'm not sure if I'll read the next book as there wasnt as much twists and turns in the story as I would have liked and the characters, Lara, Joe and double eight were missing something for me, as I kind of expected them to be a bit more grown up. I think this would have worked well as a young adult book.

I must admit that I have rated it as a cross between what I might have given it when I was the age this book is pitched at and a rating for the age I am now.

This is a darkly magical adventure with a brave and inspiring heroine at its heart. From the very first lines the reader knows that this is going to be a story full of danger, mystery and thrilling moments. An utterly gripping book.
The first in a new fantasy trilogy by this award winning author tells the story of Lara, an orphan who finds a mysterious box in the sewers beneath King’s Haven while scavenging for treasure. She quickly finds herself in the middle of a dangerous conflict in which she must defeat the evil Mrs Hester and the sinister Shadow Jack.
This is a fast paced yet thoughtful read. The thrilling plot is combined with themes including the importance of love and loyalty and how power can be used to control and manipulate. The world building is excellently done and from the first pages the reader is immersed in a land of dark magic, witches, breath-taking risks and friendship and bravery too. Lara is a fabulous character, brave yet slightly vulnerable. Her friendship with Joe, another child who lives in the sewers, is portrayed as a strong and important one, almost like that of siblings. The character development is another positive aspect of the book and Lara matures and develops as the story progresses. She alters from a child with a sense of self-preservation to a young woman who is determined to help those she loves and do the right thing in difficult situations. There are a number of characters with whom Lara develops both friendship and animosity and these all feel believable. The villains are sinister and the plot is both gripping and richly written, containing several key scenes that feel cinematic and although not usually a great lover of fantasy this engaged me very quickly.
There is a lot of heart in this book with its messages being conveyed subtly and I think it should give readers much to think about. This would be a fabulous read for upper primary and lower secondary.

Wow. That was EPIC!
(Also, the cover is absolutely stunning.)
Even as a teenager, I like middle grade fantasy adventures: most of them are originally wonderful (ok, you get tropes, but what story hasn't?), lack soppy annoying romantic parts, and are fast-paced and fun for a short read. I started this only this morning and finished at 3 in the afternoon, barely able to put it down. This one is a delightful surprise. I especially love Moonwing the actual adorable clockwork bird!
I love the fluid, flowing writing, and the switch of action from character to character. The world-building's ambitious: Witches, Victorian London vibe toshers, Darkness unleashed, mindless prisoners, dangerous villains, even cloud spells? and Gun-wand complex? but the writer pulls it off well
Perhaps some scary bits for readers too young, bit of blood and violence, but I'll recommend to pre-teens and up.

OH wow, Evernight is awesome.
If you could imagine an epic fantasy taken down to Middle Grade with the scale, scope and intensity of the world of A Game of Thrones you would be halfway to exploring just how magnificent this book is because then we throw spellcraft, Witches and souls, Djinni’s, Wild West style revolver wands and an army of possessed warriors to reckon with the White Walkers. It’s epic in both adjective and that grand tradition of the word. I'm signed sealed delivered a HUGE fan.
