A luxury train tour in Europe. A dysfunctional family. A murdered matriarch.
When a long-awaited vacation ends in murder for one of the tour guests and passports are confiscated by the authorities, the dream trip turns into a nightmare.
DeeDee, Jake, Al, and Cassie find themselves stranded in a luxury hotel in Venice, Italy. Sounds great, but they can’t leave until the murderer is found. They have no choice but to help the local police, so they can return home to the United States.
This is the 14th book in the bestselling Northwest Cozy Mystery Series by a USA Today Bestselling Author and Amazon All-star.
I listened to the audiobook of this one and while it was my first in this series I was not lost about the characters or their backstories. I didn’t love the narrator as much as I liked the story. The main characters DeeDee, Cassie, Al, and Jake take a trip to Europe and when they are on the train between Scotland and Italy one of the people from their group is murdered. They find themselves stuck with the group in a luxury hotel in Venice while police from each country fight over who has jurisdiction. There was great character development for not just the main characters but all of the people in the group. Everyone was really a suspect and the mystery was pretty good. I love that the group of amateur sleuths (although Al and Jake appear to have a PI business so less amateur than most cozies) is from the Pacific Northwest and I will definitely be looking into more in this series as I love stories set in my home region.
The last thing you want on your vacation is a murder, particularly if the murderer is probably one of your tour group. The book has a good plot and is peopled with a lot of suspects to try and decide who is the killer.
I enjoyed this book. This is another great who done it mystery by this author. I liked the fact that the murder happened on the train so apart from the main characters everybody was a suspect. There was plenty of suspects and I did start to suspect the wrong person before they too were ruled out. Like always the author created some great characters, including the murder victim that everybody is bound to hate. It was also fun traveling around to all the different locations and with the police trying to pass the difficult case off to someone else, thank goodness for DeeDee and her friends. Like DeeDee and Cassie I think it might put you off traveling or at least on the same holiday package as them though. DeeDee and Jake are joined by there good friends Al and Cassie on a train trip around Europe. The rest of group is mostly made up of one big happy family only the matriarch is making everybody's life a living hell. She is rude, vindictive and just plain mean. Everybody tries to ignore her but it proves too difficult for one member of the party. Somebody strangles her in her sleep and as the train eats up the miles audible the track, fingers start to point. The police are busy arguing who's jurisdiction the murder occurred in so it is left up to DeeDee and her friends to find the killer. I liked the narrator. She didn't try to pull of a Scottish accent which in my opinion was a good idea because unless you are Scottish few can pull off but the rest of the voices sounded good. I was given this free review copy audiobook at my request and have voluntarily left this review.
My absolute favorite character is back in this one, Al DeDuca with his wife DeeDee and best friends Jake and Cassie. Al used to be a security guard for a big mob boss-After his boss died--Al went straight, met and married DeeDee. He became a partner with Jake in their PI firm. Al has a heart of gold--until his protective instincts kick in. One other other about Al--he has not lost his Brooklyn accent!
Well the two couples decided to go on vacation--they really hadn't gone anywhere for a long time. They made sure their dogs were safe in a kennel--and went on a European tour which included train rides between venues and countries. It would have been a really nice trip if a truly dysfunctional family hadn't been on the same tour. Then one night when they were traveling to Italy by train--the matriarch of said family was murdered! She was such a miserable person that any one of her children might have done it. Even though Jake and Al were PI's they refused to get involved!
A street thief made a bad mistake by trying to steal Cassie's Nikon camera while she was walking and taking pictures--uh Al's instincts took over--you will laugh when you hear his reaction as they took him away to jail--and when he got out the next day!!
Meanwhile DeeDee was trying to figure out who killed the mean old woman. She stumbles upon clues and does figure it out. Hey, she didn't want to get stuck in Italy until the case was closed!!
Getting to the truth sent Cassie in many different directions, not all leading to the culprit.
I truly enjoyed this one and those recipes--I wish I was a better cook!!
I have read all of the previous books. I enjoy the foursome: Deedee, Jake, Al, and Cassie. In this book the four are on a European train vacation and a murder occurs while on board. I felt the author did a good job of not revealing who the murderer is til the end. You know it had to be someone on the train, but who? Deedee and Jake agree not to get involved yet by having discussions with the group of passengers, Deedee figures out who the killer is. As a subplot, Al gets arrested and it wasn’t clear how long he would be held! They have just a few days left of their vacation and the group is ready to go home as scheduled. This book was entertaining as it told somewhat of the train adventure and the places they visited. Yet there was intrigue, murder on a train and in a foreign country. Deedee gets clobbered on the head with her friends as witnesses. There is a dog in the story; a minor character but a dog! One of the group passengers has their support dog with her. The book is easy reading and will hold your interest. As like her other books, there are recipes at the end of the book.
Murder on the Train: A Northwest Cozy Mystery (Northwest Cozy Mystery Series), my seventeenth read/listen from author Dianne Harman and my fourth read in her Northwest Cozy Mystery Series. Well-written and developed, an enjoyable read/listen. I received an Audible copy of this book & am voluntarily reviewing it. Anna Wheeler's narration adds to an good book's enjoyment. I look forward to reading more in this series & from this author, in fact I just put Murder on Bainbridge Island: A Northwest Cozy Mystery (Northwest Cozy Mystery Series Book 1) on my TBR list. (RIP Marley January 20, 2014 - July 24, 2018).
On a vacation trip beginning in Scotland, they stay at a manor house hotel, then board a train to London, stay overnight, then board a train to a ferry across the Channel where they board yet another train that goes through France to Italy ending in Venice. On the last train there is a murder.
This is one of the best Northwest Cozy Mysteries. I really enjoyed it.
I though I should give this book a chance. Multiple times actually. But that was just not it. The pacing was way too slow. Even if it was meant to be a ‘cozy mystery’, can’t the events just take place quicker? Perhaps I’m a short tempered person. Was I entertained? Slightly. Was it worth the patience? Nope. Will I be reading another Northwest Cozy Mystery book? Probably not. If you do enjoy a slow-paced book however, with not much really going on, I’d recommend this.
Another mystery outing for the intrepid four, this time solving a murder on a train en route to Venice. This is definitely not the restful vacation they had planned. The scenic descriptions are lovely and the Scottish food pretty authentic. Well worth reading.
Oh to travel on luxurious trains and stay in hotels around Europe. Glad that Cassie and Al and Jake and Dee Dee can travel outside Bainbridge Island. But Cassie, grow up and stop being a whiney bitch when everything isn’t calm and be an adult. She is really starting to get on my nerves!
DeeDee and Jake are headed off on a fun train tour of Europe with their friends Al and Cassie. They quickly find out that they are traveling with a dysfunctional family. And to make it worse, one of the family members is murdered. Now they are all stuck in Venice until the murderer is found. Well, now DeeDee and Jake have no choice to help find the killer.
Another good Cozy mystery to enjoy in my Kindle Bobble
I always enjoy Dianne Harman’s captivating Cozy Mysteries. . The ending was a surprise. It is a sign of a good mystery. I’m glad the little girl spoke up to her mother. She knew she could trust her mother. It is good she has a good support system so she can grow up to be a stable happy person. Robert Ericksen
Entertaining storyline about DeeDee and friends going on vacation, this time on a train, and of course gets involve in a murder mystery! As always, a fantastic story!
Loved the book! The characters and location description was interesting. I can’t understand how a person could be so evil so family members. Location description was fabulous.
14th book in the Northwest cozy mystery series finds DeeDee and Jake along with Al and Cassie on a European train trip along with an unhappy family led by a cantankerous mother. When she is found dead on the train to a Venice, everyone is suspect until DeeDee figures it out.
Strong character writing and a easy to follow story makes this series come alive. The characters are your friends and you want the best for them. You'll love this series. Great Reading Everyone!
Our friends from Settle take an extra fancy vacation but felt likes Agatha Christie had joined them . A murder on their train leads to lots of questions.
