Life coach, impassioned author, type 1 diabetic, founder of lifestyle company Be You Only Better, and homeschool mom of two Laura Kronen tells it like it is. She gives you the foundation you need to successfully and happily homeschool kindergarten through high school students. Laura is currently on a mission to dispel the stereotypes surrounding homeschooling and to bring home education to the mainstream.

Besides authoring Homeschool Happily and Too Sweet: The Not-So-Serious Side to Diabetes, Laura is a lover of wine and tennis (although not at the same time). When not homeschooling her boys or working, she spends her spare time traveling, volunteering, enjoying the sunshine, and buying things in the middle of the night that she doesn’t really need.

You’ll find her eclectic energy all over social media, including on her YouTube channel, Super Cool Home School, which features good-vibe educational videos on homeschooling, diabetes, trivia, and sometimes just her stream of consciousness. Reflective of her life, Laura’s social networks are an intriguing potpourri, a little bit of everything.

If you are thinking about homeschooling your child or perhaps, you already are a homeschooler who needs reassurance and support, this book is highly recommended.
Organised in step-by step chapters, the book covers all the concerns and issues you may have, for example, what your personal rationale may be for homeschooling, the pros and cons of homeschooling, how to deal with critical people and remain unphased, how to design a curriculum and plan learning, and how to take care of yourself as the mom, (or dad,) teacher and principal of your school at home.
Although I was educated through the public system, I share the belief with the author that there is something very unnatural about being confined in a brick building in order to learn about the real world.
In this book, the author shows how homeschooling, if it is right for you and your child, can make learning fun; children are naturally curious and positive and they will easily engage with things in which they are interested. This, according to the book, is where homeschooling comes in.
The author delivers her information and advice in a savvy, chatty and often humourous way and the facts she presents are the result of thorough, extensive research into practicalities.
This book is important given that more and more parents are moving towards homeschooling, especially given the Covid times in which we are living.
Of course, as the author points out, homeschooling is not "online learning" to a public school curriculum. Good homeschooling takes into account the individual needs of each child. This is a far cry form the "one size fits all" approach or teaching to a particular milestone or exam that can sometimes be seen in public schools.
The author points out that it is always possible to create learning opportunities that a child may "miss" because they are homeschooled. She discusses opportunities with Co-ops, and organisations which offer sport or arts opportunities to homeschooled kids, and the possibilities that hiring teachers for specific lessons can create. Of course field trips are a great way to encourage learning, and the author shows how homeschoolers take the opportunity to go out into the wider world to expand children's horizons.
Perhaps what resonated with me the most was that the book emphasized the creative aspects of learning, and the joy that learning with family can be, among those we love and who love us.
Far from advocating molly-coddled, spoilt children, the author discusses how to foster independence, discipline, good habits and self-reliance in children which will prepare them for the challenges they will encounter in their lives. She also busts many of the myths associated with homeschooling, for example, that only eccentric people homeschool, and that homeschooling creates kids who are socially awkward.
There is a handy resources reference guide at the back of this excellent book, which is indispensable to anyone serious about homeschooling.

It all made sense when I realized this was self published. From starting the book with political views, to quoting yourself throughout, I was asking “who approved this?” Turns out, you don’t need approval when you self publish. You don’t even need to be accurate - “…one of my favorite books, Freakonomics by Malcolm Gladwell…” girl, that is not one of your favorite books because it is not by Malcolm Gladwell… Ultimately I’d refer to an internet search or a Reddit thread on Homeschooling rather than read this book - it’s an inside look at how someone did it but that someone wrote a bad book about it. If Kronen wants to write about how to publish yourself, I’d read that - as long as she also had an editor credited.

This is one of the few books that I wish had more stars to give. The author addresses a critical question about education in today’s world – Should I homeschool my children?

The information in this book will make it possible for parents to make an informed decision regarding their children’s education. The author covers everything from basic pros and cons of home schooling to a curriculum for each year (Kindergarten through high school); costs involved; resources for outsourcing teaching for subjects a parent does not have the skills to teach; standardized testing; keeping records to ensure college admission, and so much more.

Every parent with school-age children should read this book carefully. It could help them make one of the most important decisions you will make in your children’s lives.

My children are adults living their own lives but, if I still had children at home in today’s world, homeschooling would be my first choice. If you read this well-written, easy-to-read, informative book, it may also be your choice. Highly recommended!!!!!

Anything you possibly will need to know about homeschooling

I never expect I would be homeschooling my kids. However due the pandemic I decided to choose a safer route and this book is super helpful highlighting the pros and cons. As a mom of two, I found it super useful to have information for different enrichment programs to help supplement the school curriculum. Great read and worth the investment!
