Jack Morgan, born Jacob Moscowitz (who vaguely suggests Mike Todd) is a rugged, ruthless, sometimes vulgar and daring showman whose prodigious energies are expended mainly toward two ends in this interesting, well paced, sprawling and somewhat cliche-spattered first namely the production of a Hollywood spectacular, The Apostles and the wooing of Anne Allen, the screen's reigning glamour girl. Morgan is seen as he lies, cheats, swindles, even blackmails to scrape up another stop-gap million or so here, secure a valuable piece of talent there, and dodge criminal proceedings almost everywhere. One is fascinated, sometimes to the point of grudging admiration- without respect.
Loosely based on producer Mike Todd and Elizabeth Taylor's relationship with all the trappings of Hollywood tinsel. A pretty accurate take on the film world. Well written.
waxes poetic a little too often and things fall into place for morgan a little too many times, but still enjoyed it as a portrait of movie-making in the 60s. read a review on here i think mentioning that morgan is pretty much mike todd and yet somehow forgot that the ending was going to be that ending until i got to it which was nice i guess. but i was picturing natalie wood as anne allen
