Praise for Lucky Universe, book 1 in the series:
"This sucker is a grab your ass and hang on ride! Full throttle action from page one through the epilogue." -Goodreads reviewer, 5 stars
"A great military sci-fi novel! ... The fight scenes are fast-paced and intense. There are lots and I do mean lots of twists and turns in the plot. Nothing is quite as it seems." -Errant Dreams review
"One of the things that marks this book out from other military SF novels is the twists and turns. Just when you think you have it figured out, the author throws another one in. In hindsight, you can see how it all links together and how it drove the characters." -SF Crows Nest review
"Do yourself a favor if you love sci-fi with nonstop action, great character depth and environments that are off the charts, read this series!" -Goodreads reviewer, 5 stars
1) Lucky Universe: The Lucky Universe is really, really missed up. It's like Murphy's Law, if it can go wrong it will. Very exciting story though. It will keep you glued to your seat. Not all bad luck but I think his margin between good and bad in getting smaller. 2) Lucky Legacy: OOO! Now we have a Dragon now. I do like this series. It is so exciting. Full of betrayal, danger, death, death defying escapes. All kinds of surprises too. It is hard to put the book down. AND all nine books are here to binge read. OOO! I love it. 3) Lucky Empire: The man has some very strange luck. The Hate is his nemesis. It is very strange but exciting. Still looking for the train wreck. The story is sooo good though. 4) Lucky Forever: Lucky is something else. I know I have said it before. It is true though. Now we have another new enemy. The Delmar. Nasty! Still exciting story. Lucky, I wounder how many lives he has? 5) Lucky Invasion: Surprise! Surprise! Did not see that coming. A whole new world just opened up. Now we will see something else. 6) Lucky Revenge: I'm not sure who's revenge is who's. Lucky did get to kill some old foes. So did the Empire. Lucky gets all the hard work and none of the acclaim. All he gets is the re-gen tube. I do love the by play from Luck and Rocky though. It makes me laugh so hard. Good story. 7) Lucky Justice: I don't even know how many times Lucky has died and been brought back to life. It does seam that he dies at least once a mission though. Also Lucky and his team always finish the mission. Maybe not as planed but he does finish it. 8) Lucky Bastard: I don't know, but I do believe Luck and his crew are very lucky. All the s**t going on around them and they come home alive. Not always in one piece but alive. I do love rocky and she knows just what is going on. I think they will take her advice. Excellent story. 9) Lucky At Last: Woo! That was a very close call. Excellent story thought. Lucky was truly luck this time. Plus a new series. Nice score.
this book has 2,504 pages because it is 9 books compressed into one volume. Lycky, the main character in these books, frequently takes enough combat damage to kill 2 whole platoons but he always survives thanks to combat-grade medical Nanobots that almost instantly repair combat any damage he suffersThe nanobots can repair anything except a shot to the head. He has an AI inside his head that military sci-the nanobots. while this is highly improbable, it is fun to read. I enjoyed reading it and I recommend it to anyone who likes reading military Sci-Fi and doesn't mind probability being stretched a bit. There is also a bit of comedy mixed in.
Lance corporal Lucky Lee Savage! I found Lucky's nickname and surname rather interesting considering the fact that he is a marine having survived 152 fights already. That is a statistic that very few marines would ever try to even emulate. Lucky? Sure. Savage! Yes, marines can be. But with the secretive alien Du'hane making inroads on human fighting forces, including the marines, with some mysterious force at their command, the Du'hane is a powerful military enemy to fear. As Lucky discovered on his first face off with the Du'hane. And a couple of somewhat surviving soldiers of that clash. Author Joshua James with this ultimate collection of the subsequent forays of Lucky makes for quite the immersive range of military clashes and surprises galore. Enjoy!
I've read other books by Joshua James and while this series is good it has a few flaws. Sometimes the action gets in the way of the storyline and it becomes muddied. This is definitely not a series for those who are easily offended - it is filled with blatant sexual innuendos and extreme, albeit creative, profanity...much like you would in a typical earthbound marine. The characters are for the most part, believable and galaxy-building is superb. This should really be a 4 and a half star rating, but the 'Zon doesn't allow that. All in all, kudos to JJ.
Audiobooks: The series was divided into three box sets in an audiobook format. I enjoyed the whole series. The stories were filled with non-stop action. The twists and turns kept me on the edge-of-my seat. I liked the characters of Lucky and his team and their comradery. There were flashes of humor in the snappy dialogue and in some of the situations in which the characters were involved. Mark Boyett's narration was excellent, and his performance added to my enjoyment of the series. I was given a free copy of the three audiobook box sets, and I have voluntarily posted this review.
I read the whole series of 9 books. The marines have evolved into an elite force whose AI assisted regenerative nanobytes, combat stims, and space armor make them almost invincible. Almost. I’m not sure the thinking of the people in charge has changed much over the decades though. The complex plots, and the squad of marines with their range of personalities, humor, suicidal missions, poor overhead support, and the crazy aliens which keep literally dropping out of space, will catch you up in the whirlwind of the action. The chaos of war.
This is a lot of twists and turns, action and fun! It is not very believable but it's great reading! Lucky is a great character. Not quite hero, not quite villain but a little of each. The supporting characters are well developed and some are charming, i,e, Dabs, some villainous, i.e. Knives and some unbelievably smart, i.e, Rocky and Dena. It's all unique and fun to read about. Highly recommended.
Enjoyed overall , but, a little too much action and detail. I think when you write sci-fi, you have to make believe that this could actually happen in the future. This wasn't the case in this series, many things were a little too far fetched.
If you can stomach the foul language and clichés there is a good story here. I had to skip many pages when the language was just intolerable. But I kept reading since I was hooked on the storyline and wanted to know how Lucky would save the universe. This is the kind of book that If someone had told me would make a salty sailor blush I probably would never have read.
This series is perfect for all those who expect excitement and action on every page. The underlying humor just makes everything that extra little more interesting. Anyone who likes non stop action with a little sci-fi adventure on the side will enjoy every word immensely.
Over time Lucky's Marines has given me hours of reading enjoyment. If you want to binge read a series then this is one you have to get. Military Sci Fi is the best as is this series will prove my point.
I enjoyed this. When I find myself talking to the characters is a good sign. My only complaint would be that things got formulaic in the end. I knew what was going to happen.
Overall I thought this series was really well written but it wasn’t my cup of tea. Heroes who can regenerate just about anything at any time we’re just too unimaginable but the snarky AI almost made up for it.
Lucky' conversations with his AI are hilarious. Lucky and his merry band of marines manage to bumblebuckery up every plan they set in motion... well, that's assuming there was a plan in the first place.
Really enjoyed this series of books. While initially it felt a tad slow starting it made up for that in spades. Character development and plot. I was kept in my toes throughout the entire story.
Besides the never ending action, I LOVE the humor. I laughed out loud at the word play between Rocky and Lucky. And who would believe an AI would have the hots for "pretty boy". Escapism at it best.
Almost non-stop action and nearly believable characters in impossible situations. It's truly a tale that you'll immerse yourself into. Where have epic stories of this caliber been?
Ok. Im done. The snappy banter is not keeping me interested. Its david and goliath... and im not interested in discovering if david makes it this time.
