An award winning author, including the GOLD in Foreword INDIES Book of the Year Awards and LDSPMA Praiseworthy's top award for Romance, Jen Geigle Johnson has more stories circulating in her brain than can possibly be told. She discovered her passion for England while kayaking on the Thames near London as a young teenager. HIstory is her main jam. Her literary heroes include the greats: Jane Austen and Charles Dickens. But she has modern sensibilities as well. Six children and an inspiring husband keep her going and make certain she doesn't stay glued to a keyboard or lost in obscure fascinating details of old castles. She once greeted an ancient turtle under the water by grabbing her fin. She waterskis like a boss and hits the powder, falling down steep moguls with grace. During a study break date in college, she sat on top of a jeep's roll bars up in the mountains and fell in love with the man who would become her everything.

Now, she loves to share bits of history that might otherwise be forgotten. Whether in Regency England, the French Revolution, or Colonial America, her romance novels are much like life is supposed to be: full of adventure.

I love the Sisters of Sussex series. Lucy Standish has always determined she would marry a Duke and has learned to act and carry herself as a Duchess would. She didn't count on developing feelings for Conor, the groom at their stables. Could she possibly marry someone of a "lower station"?

Poor Lucy, the road to love is never easy. I liked that unlike most young ladies, Lucy didn't really care about the title in her determination to marry a Duke. She and her sisters had been left with nothing after the deaths of their parents, and had lived off the charity of others until her older sister June married Lord Morley. She didn't want to relive that ever again, and wanted the financial security marriage to a Duke would provide for her and her younger sisters. I liked that as Lucy spent more time with Conor she realized how restrictive and stifling life as a Duchess would be. If she married a Duke, she might be married to someone who didn't share her interests, she'd have to live somewhere else and would rarely see her sisters, and she would probably never have true friends. I liked watching her attitude about marrying a Duke change.

I loved Conor and how he loved when Lucy's hair would come out of its pins when she raced her horse. He cared for Lucy as she was, not about any wealth or influence her family might have. I liked that her sisters and brothers-in-law supported her and that helped her make the decision that was right for her. I also liked that we find out more of the sisters ancestors, and Conor's family also has a little mystery to solve about their ancestors too. I can't wait to read about the next sister in this series.

I received a complimentary copy to review but bought a copy for my personal library when the book released.

Ever since her family experience poverty, Lucy has been determined to marry into the peerage. With the sponsorship of a Duchess, she catches the eye of a Duke’s heir. She also catches the eye of a stable hand from home who is suddenly accepted by the “ton” due to his connection with the Prince Regent. Which will she choose, duty or love? This is the 4th book in the Sisters of Sussex series, but can be read as a standalone. Occasionally there were some modern phrases that seemed out of place in a Regency story but overall I thought it was fast-paced, well written, and a sweet, engaging romance.

I received an eARC of this book for review. A positive review was not required and all opinions are my own.

Love the Sisters of Sussex series. I have loved learning about all of the sisters and their love stories. I also love how in each book we learn a little bit more about their family history. I love how in this book we saw Lucy have to decide what she really wanted. Did she stick with what she thought her duty was or did she follow her heart? I loved how the book ended and I loved how she was finally able to be herself instead of who she thought she should be. I can’t wait to read the next books in this series.

I received a complimentary book from publishers, publicists, and or authors.  A review was not required and all opinions and ideas expressed are my own.

Another fun book in the Sisters of Sussex series! Conor was easy to love! Lucy I wanted to clobber upside the head a time or two. It’s hard to love a character that is focused so much on titles. But I still did like her as I got to know her and her fears better. Enjoyable regency romance.

Suitors for the Proper Miss
Lords for the Sisters of Sussex #4
By Jen Geigle Johnson

Lucy Standish has known most of her life that she was destined to marry very well - she of all the sisters has been declared the most suitable to marry a duke. She knows this is so and it will not be a love match, though she hopes there may be a little affection. But she must do this to provide for her children and her sisters - she never wants to be poor and hungry again. And she will do what she can to secure not only her future but the future of all she holds dear. There is just one little problem getting her heart to agree with her thinking.

Mr. Sullivan has a way with horses and if she were honest she's found him to be the closest thing to a friend she has outside of her sisters. But nothing more could ever come of it - not even a true friendship because nobility and servants are to observe the boundaries that society has set in place. But somehow Mr. Sullivan has a way of seeing past the carefully constructed persona she has crafted for herself. After all, if she wishes to be a duchess she must always behave like a duchess. But when she is with Conor Sullivan she feels a freedom she never expected.

A chance at a London season is the best thing that could have been offered to Lucy. First, it will take away from Conor and the confusion of feelings that he stirs within her. Second, it will afford her the chance to secure the future she so desperately wants.

When a change comes into the Sullivan family's situation will it sway Lucy from one path to another? Or will the fears of the past keep her from following her heart?

But what happens when your dreams change and what you've had suddenly becomes dear? Is the promise of security worth turning down the chance for love? Lucy's future depends on choices before her.

Suitors for the Proper Miss is the fourth book in the Lords for the Sisters of Sussex series and it is as delightful as the previous books. You can read this book as a standalone title but it reads better if you first read the other books so that you are aware of the backstories that are referenced in this book. But either way that you read this book you won't be disappointed. A lovely Regency era read perfect for spending the weekend with!

There is an added bonus, a short excerpt from book 5 that will tease you with what is to come.

I was provided a complimentary copy of the book with no expectations but that I provide my honest opinion. All thoughts expressed are my own.

Wow! This book is incredible, and incredibly swoon-worthy! It is also romantic, sweet, hopeful, and warmed my heart! Whenever I picked up "Suitors for the Proper Miss", I was whisked back in time waltzing to the Regency Era, and fell in love with this story!

This is the fourth book in Ms. Johnson's "Lords for the Sisters of Sussex" series, and is such a sweet story! Every time I pick up one of these books, I feel like I am visiting with family and friends, as the characters truly weave a special place into your heart. Ms. Johnson has a way of making each and every character so unique, and the support they have for one another is simply beautiful to read. I feel like I am a sixth Standish sister, as I can feel their wants, fears, and struggles, and am so pulling for each and every one of them to find love and happiness!

Lucy is such a sweet, kind, passionate young woman, who, for her entire life, has believed that she will marry a duke, as, she believes, it will secure not only her and her sister's safety, but future generations of their family's security as well.

Conor is such a caring, sweet, loving, and heartfelt man who wants the best for those around him. When he loves, he loves with his entire heart, and, truthfully, realized he was in love with Lucy from the moment he first looked at her.

(Possible Spoilers!)
I found myself pulling for Lucy and Conor from the very start, as they truly bring out the best in each other. They can be themselves around one another, and I was on the edge of my seat through their ups and downs just hoping beyond hoping they would end up together. Their love for horses is so beautiful, and I loved seeing their bond with the animals as well, and how it brings them together. I do not want to say too much regarding certain plot points as it would give far too much away...so I will simply say you must read to find out what happens with these two!

If you enjoy Regency Romance, I highly recommend this book! It is also thought-provoking, and has many important messages in it as well. It kept me reading up until the early hours of the morning to see how everything would work out, and the ending scene brought tears to my eyes. I do wish the ending was extended out more, but, I absolutely can not wait to see many of these character's stories continue in the next two books!

Thank you so much to the author, Jen Geigle Johnson, for sending me an ARC of this book, I just loved it! All opinions expressed in this review are my own.

This is the third book I've read by Jen Geigle Johnson and I'll definitely continue to read everything she puts together. Her books are sweet + light, the settings are always stunning, and her characters always pull you in.

This story follows the ever determined Lucy Standish who has set her sights on marrying a Duke. She's decided that it is the only way to secure her families legacy and station. Unfortunately, she's got a big old crush on her stable boy, Conor. I don't know how many times while reading this I thought of The Princess Bride! I wanted so badly for Conor to say "as you wish" at least once :)

Conor is completely smitten with Lucy but nothing he seems do can sway her from her lofty goals. Even taking a job with the prince isn't enough to change her mind and see him as anything other than a servant. But then a new wrinkle in his history is discovered and it could change everything between them.

This was a darling romance and a quick read. It gets a bit repetitive after awhile because there is not true conflict. They both do love each other and have everyone's blessing. I think my only issue is that the "conflict" in this story is really just internal and singular - it's all in Lucy's head based on what she perceives to be true. I think for me I like when there's a secondary issue or another minor character that also has a plot line to create more tension and drama. I just wanted a little bit more in this book. Maybe something to do with one of her sisters or an event like a horse race to plan for? For me, I would have liked just one more plot line or issue to overcome to deepen and enrich the story.

But the love story itself is darling and those looking for a quick, sweet romance will find it here. The perfect book for Valentine's!

The Sussex sisters are back together again in this next book of the series. Life has turned around for them from the days they weren't sure if they would eat. With two of the sisters married there is more security for all of them but middle sister Lucy hasn't forgotten the difficult times they have lived through for so many years. She has made a decision that she will marry a duke to make sure that her family never suffers the insecurities that she and her sisters had endured. Her decision doesn't even involve her falling in love with Lord Fellon, she has decided to marry.
As Lucy moves towards a more serious relationship with Lord Fellon, she starts to see cracks in her perfect plan. He doesn't really want to know much about her.

Mr Colin Sullivan, the man who has helped run the stables at their Castle has made her feel more alive and free than anyone she knows. Colin sees the woman she is and appreciates everything about her. She is afraid to let him share with her how he feels for her. When his family's situation changes bringing them to the attention of the Prince- he has an opportunity to have his own Horse business and eventually some land as well.

Lucy has a difficult choice to make and hopefully will let her heart instead of her head decide which is the right man for her.

I loved the update on the other sisters as June and Morley are ready to welcome a baby into the family. The bluestocking Charity's story is up next and I enjoyed the preview of it.

I received a copy of this book form the author and this is my honest unbiased review.

I was entertained and charmed by this book! The characters were witty and full of personality and the chemistry between Lucy and Conor kept me turning the pages!! I love that this series has so much interaction from the other family members who have been featured in previous books! Lucy’s inner struggle with finding her way to love was methodical and well thought out and I appreciated the author’s approach to her change of heart. Her decisions and actions were genuine and really made the story more authentic! The ‘will they, won’t they’ aspect of this story will keep readers invested until the conclusion, but I was happily satisfied with the ending! No spoilers! I would gladly read more from this author as this was an easy to read and enjoyable regency novel!

I think these stories keep getting better and better. I think my favorite part is the sister relationship and family dynamic. The group of sisters had a close relationship before, but I think each new book brings them closer and closer.

This book may also have had the widest character arc, with Lucy’s change of heart. In previous books, I thought she was a bit snobbish. Her self-centered attitude always bothered me, especially considering how all the other sisters seemed to be quite motivated by a love for the others. I appreciated seeing more of her inner thoughts and actual motivations. Even from the beginning, she was more a character I could like but she steadily grew on me throughout. I did find myself frustrated with her several times, particularly with the wishy-washy, “do titles matter or don’t they?” Attitude. Also, her final change of heart felt a little abrupt to me but I liked where it stemmed from.

Connor is pretty much the most patient, kind hero you’ll ever meet. He was definitely more patient and understanding than I would have been under the same circumstances. Speaking particularly to the ending (while attempting not to give anything away), I was impressed with how readily he fell in line with Lucy’s plans.

I am thinking Charity might be my favorite sister and I sincerely look forward to her story next!

Note: very clean romance; a passionate kiss is all there is for content.

***I received a copy of this book from the author in exchange for a review. The thoughts here are my own.

Quotes I loved:

“If a person holds that high of an opinion on your appearance to allow it to change their very opinion of you, then who would want such a person in their life?” (18)

“Don’t underestimate the enjoyment of a new gown.” (118)

Cute read. Lucy was a little too shallow and immature for my taste, and I wish she had grown a little more by the end of the book, but Conor was the perfect hero!
It’s been a little bit since I read the book prior to this one, but I’m pretty sure we had the hero’s POV in that one. I thought it was interesting that this book was only told from Lucy’s POV.

I have struggled with Lucy's character from the beginning of this series. She was always quite a snob. So I wasn't sure how I'd like her book. Then I read the synopsis and was so excited to see she'd fall for someone of a different station. The beginning of this book showed a very different Lucy than I expected and I loved it. Then her snobbishness started to come through again and I really didn't like her. My feeling went back and forth over and over again during this story as she struggled against her past and who she wanted to be. I understand her desire to marry a duke because of her past, but I felt she was very naive as well to think a duke would solve all their problems. I loved Conor and was rooting for him the entire time. He is a wonderful guy trying so hard with what life has given him. I really liked his character. As I said my feelings went back and forth a lot, but in the end I was happy.

If you have read the first three books of this series then you know that the title of this story is very fitting for this sister's story: Lucy Standish. The difficulties of her past are still at the front of her mind, as well as worries for her future, that of her sisters and even that of the future generations of the Standish family. The way to secure it all? Marry a duke. And so, Lucy has been preparing all these years to become a duchess and provide for her family. But is a duchess really the end goal she desires? And the duke she has her sights set on? Mr. Conor Sullivan makes her question everything she thought she knew and desired. The time has come for Lucy to really decide, once and for all, what her heart truly desires.

And the journey to that discovery is delightful! Lucy is such a raw and real character. She has the questions that we all ask ourselves on a daily basis, maybe not in regards to becoming a duchess, but in the sense of what we want in life. These realistic pieces of this character allowed me to like Lucy even though I really wanted to shake her a few times. Especially in regards to how she viewed people. She's a frustrating character (aren't we all?), especially at the beginning, but thanks to Jen Geigle Johnson's writing Lucy's experience on the path to self discovery really touches the heart. At least it did that for me. and now Lucy might be one of my favorite Standish sisters!

Then there is Conor, also trying to find his place in the world. The wonderful part, he's willing to work hard and earn that place while also staying true to who he is. Not an easy task, but one that Conor undertakes while also helping a pretty young miss with her own journey. And of course there are sparks along the way and love. Love and family, the two things that matter most to the heart and Lucy and Conor's story has it all. Of course the book wouldn't be complete without the rest of the Standish of the sisters as well and I love how Johnson includes them each time. Plus the fun family history discoveries along the way that bring the family together.

And I have to add, the glimpses I got into Charity and her story were absolutely delightful! I cannot wait for the next book!

I started right into this story right after reading "Her Lady's Whims and Fancies". I can't get enough of the Sisters of Sussex.

This story is about Lucy. She is determined to marry a Duke. But sometimes the heart and head do not agree. I enjoyed her story.

Conner was definitely a swoon worthy main character. He was brilliant the way he dealt with her.

This is good and clean fun. I highly recommend this series to everyone and anyone who loves clean Regency romance.

A change of fortune

Lucy has spent her life perfecting what is expected of a lady by the ton. Life has been hard for their family. Her father inherited his title without the money that normally had been passed down through generations. Instead, she and her sisters had grown up hungry and in ragged, patched clothing until her oldest
sister married well. Her new brother in law had seen fit to providing them with the means and a home in which to live comfortably.
Lucy planned to marry a duke because his fortune would be able to provide the security that would make sure none of her offspring or siblings children would ever have to face poverty. She's looking forward to a London season and happily living her peaceful life in Cornwall. Her horse and the freedom it gave her being one of the things she loves most. When a long time friend if her family offers to sponsor and pay for her season, she's not quite as excited as she thought she'd be. You won't want to miss why she's had a possible change of heart.

#BookReview: SUITORS FOR THE PROPER MISS by Jen Geigle Johnson

This is the fourth book from the Lords for the Sisters of Sussex series. It can still be read as a standalone but now I want to read the first three books. It’s a slow burn but worth the wait. Lucy is a planner. She makes a list to help her plan her life and make decisions. She has set her sights to become a duchess and thus acts like she is already one. Her goal is splendid but I don’t agree with her being standoffish to others. I am not a fan of those who look down to those beneath them. I was amazed how she just accepted the duke’s actions. She likes Connor but he is just a stable hand. I do like her character development and the realization of what truly matters.

I like that Connor has ambitions in life and enjoys his horses. He is respectful of Lucy’s wishes, too respectful at times. That tender moment with Lucy and his mom at their house is great.

I do enjoy every moment when Lucy and Connor are together. There is this budding but restrained attraction. No words have been said but their glances and light touches speak volumes of their feelings. Being together makes them happy. Love it. 4 stars

The dilemma that Lucy Standish faces of doing the “proper thing” by marrying a nobleman conflicts with that of her heart and creates an interesting and charming story. Lucy's fear of the past makes her set a personal standard that she felt she needed to do to rescue her family. Trying to reconcile her sense of duty to marry wealth instead of love added to the tension and conflict that troubled Lucy. At times I thought she was going to marry the dull duke (boo!). I kept wishing that she would listen to her heart and Conor O’Sullivan, the stable hand, who was trying so valiantly to win her hand (yay). Conor gets extra suitor points for being patient and wanting the best for Lucy.

I have read other books in the Lords for the Sisters of Sussex series and was delighted to continue further. I felt that I was part of the circle of Lucy’s friends as I got to know her and her delightful family better. Lucy’s sweet and generous nature makes you realize why her sisters care deeply for her. You can read this as a stand alone, but I would highly recommend that you read the other books as well tolerant more about this wonderful family.

My thanks to the author for a complimentary copy of this ARC. I was not required to write a positive review. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

Was she or wasn’t she a proper Miss?

Well, it was about time Lucy came around. I was beginning to wonder if someone was going to have to knock some sense into her although her sister did her best to help her make the right decision for her. Luckily she came to her senses on her own. I still must say that it was almost too much angst. I really felt for the agony Connor was going through. Everything he did was because of Lucy. And Lord Fellon (what an apropos name for one who was trying to steal a wife who has money) couldn’t see the jewel he could have had even if it were to knock him over the head. All in all, I think this was a great read. I’m still swooning over that kiss in the stables. Wowzaaa!

I thought this was a great continuation of the Standish Sisters series. It's a clean, quick read. I found myself very surprised when I checked my reading progress and found myself 50% finished already. One thing about the story that bothered me was that she had lived through poor circumstances, and then, through the goodness of others, was elevated in society. It took her long enough to realize that she could offer the same grace to Conor. She finally got there, but, man. The "stand and deliver" scene dialogue was a little cheesy, but it obviously didn't impact my rating. When I sit down to read a sweet Regency romance, I expect there to be a little Hallmark cheese every now and then. Overall, I enjoyed it, even if it was a little shorter I expected.

I love the Standish sisters and the world that Johnson has created! This installment is Lucy’s story and I felt her struggle to follow her heart or what she felt was best for her family. Johnson has written a tale of the struggle to follow your heart or your head. Which the struggle is real and I felt it; to do what you think is right or what feels right. I loved Conor and his loyalty and kindness. May we all have someone who tells us to let our hair down. I received a copy of this book for free; all thoughts and opinions are my own.

Properly Delightful

I enjoyed this romance about a young woman who, after having lived through tough financial times, was determined to marry a man with a position that would provide security for her and her posterity. I loved the characters in this story, especially the one who convinced her of the best way to choose a proper husband for her. A good read.

Lucy has always been determined to marry a man with a title until she develops a friendship with the stablehand, Conor Sullivan, and suddenly things are not quite as clear.

Forbidden love that involves different classes can be a tricky trope to write about but it totally worked in this book and I was happy with the ending. Much of the drama was Lucy unable to make up her mind and reconcile the past with the changes that were happening, and I appreciated her character arc as I liked her much more at the end. I thought Conor was a great character and more patient than I would have been under the circumstances. The romance was very sweet and I loved the carriage scene!

I enjoyed seeing the characters from previous books and a excited for Charity's story. There were a few parts that seemed inconsistent with regency society norms, but they did not detract from my enjoyment of the book - still a fun and romantic read!

I received a complimentary copy of the book but a positive review was not required.

The books in the Lords for the Sisters of Sussex series just keep getting better and better! I think that Lucy’s story might be my favorite. But… I know there are more books coming. So, who knows which book will end up my overall favorite.

There were so many things I loved about Lucy. I loved that she is a proper miss. She wants to marry a duke. But she isn’t really after the status. She just wants her sisters lives to be better. I think that’s kind of natural after what she and her sisters had been in society before they were taken care of by the Earl that married Jane. But Lucy learns as she goes along that not everything is as it seems. And sometimes the dream you have isn’t as good as your reality. I loved that about her. It’s a lesson we all have to learn at some time or another.

I really liked Conor too. He’s the groom at Lucy’s family’s stables. And he’s always watching out for Lucy. There were so many parts to this that I loved. I loved the mystery of Conor’s family. And how Lucy’s family were still unraveling their own family history mystery. And I loved the way Conor and his father weren’t going to sit idly by. They worked to make their own fortune better than what it was.

This is a great book! There’s a great scene near the end with a carriage that was my very favorite. I can’t wait to see what author Jen Geigle Johnson comes up with next!

I was sent an e-copy of Suitors for the Proper Miss as a gift from the author. All opinions are my own.

Women who aspire to marry a title drive me a little crazy because I can not imagine marrying someone without love but it was a different time... I liked Lucy despite her ambitions and I liked Conor and his ambitions to better himself in life. The Duke was awful and I fully expected Lucy to come upon him making out with someone to show his true colors but that didn't happen. He showed it in other ways though. I shuddered to think she would want to marry him.

Most of the conflict in this story is in Lucy's mindset and she has to get over her hang ups. I hoped that she would do that without outside influences and just love him as he was but everything worked out to make things acceptable for society instead. That was my only disappointment in the story. I wanted Lucy to buck convention for love.

I love the sister relationships in this series. They really are wonderful with each other. I'm really looking forward to reading Charity's story as it was set up in this book. I love that each of the sisters were so different in personality and Charity is the feminist/bluestocking. Fun times await.

No sex, language or violence

This book suffers from much of the same as the 3rd book for me: the main characters and conflict were just not that interesting. I'm not a big fan of the "must marry a man with a title" plot, even if it's justified. In this case, I could understand why Lucy wanted that when they were poor, but there was absolutely no reason to hold on to it at this point. Another plot aspect I don't like is the unequal affection between the main characters, especially when it lasts most of the book. Yes, we know that Lucy does love Conor because we know what she's thinking. However, her actions toward him are basically to give him hope then push him away and, worse of all, she manages to offend him several times. I think he deserved someone better. All that said, I'm still going to read the next book since it's about my favorite character, Charity. I don't think I would have enjoyed reading this as a standalone book but it's worth it as part of the series.

I feel like the Lord's for the Sisters of Sussex books keep getting better and better.
I must admit with the feelings between the main characters starting so soon, I felt like the only directions they could go was down. However Jen kept up good romantic tension between the characters and excellent pacing throughout the whole story.
I was really impressed at how she used the juxtaposition of both of them being noble in their history and then brought into reduced circumstance; and how they both chose to rise about that. The whole dynamic was really well done and an interesting social commentary.
I was impressed how Jen showed Lucy's arrogance coming from not knowing herself or her place. Lucy kind of drove me crazy at times, but I was really impressed with how Jen wrote her and the introspection that showed how much her past and her future were weighing on her and how she grew in the process.
Each of the sisters are portrayed with uniquely written personalities and their interactions with each other are portrayed beautifully.

Suitors for the Proper Miss is the fourth delightful installment of the Lords for the Sisters of Sussex series. The series, set in the Regency era, chronicles the lives of the five Standish sisters—June, Kate, Lucy, Charity, and Grace. This is Lucy’s story, and it is captivating from beginning to end! With a steadily flowing plot, engaging characters, and sweet romance, it keeps you guessing as to whether Lucy will choose duty or true love for her future. I have enjoyed all the previous books in this series, and it was a pleasure to reunite with all the sisters and to see more of the family history revealed. I appreciated the sneak preview of Charity’s story Pining for Lord Lockhart and look forward to reading that one soon. I highly recommend Suitors for the Proper Miss as a fun, entertaining read.

I loved this story and the sweet discovery Lucy made of her own heart and the influence and love of a dear friend. Isn’t it funny how we have these high expectations for ourselves and our family only to find that what we already have and who we already know are just as good if not better than what we think we need to accomplish? An excellent addition to the Sisters of Sussex series.
