An eerie quiet is usually the precursor to a terrible storm. Edge of Tempest opens up the world of Ledgers of a Dark Mage and gives readers a peek at the rich culture within in addition to the exploration of themes about discrimination and morality. This laidback sequel may feel like a filler story but it packs a strong punch when it comes to plot development.

I received an e-ARC of the novel from the author and I’m volunteering this review. After the establishment of a rich world in the first two books, Edge of Tempest revisits Itothia through their various cultures and traditions. What sets this book apart from its predecessors is the lighter tone with the exploration of beliefs and practices while tinkering with shifts in intensity with thrilling battles and the inevitable, brewing conflict that divides the magic users of the land. For the most part, the easy-going pace of the story adds to the reader’s experience while planting seeds for future reference and use. Though tradition plays a major role in this story, the pacing of the story does not suffer from allowing the reader to navigate through the customs of the territories of the world. In fact, the world-building complements that of the story in a seamless but purposeful manner. As an avid fan of underlying themes surrounding discrimination and political maneuvering, Edge of Tempest does a great job of pressing on the conflict regarding elarkyns and valekyns while expanding to more potential threats which are already hinted at. Furthermore, this installment introduces more creatures and lore which are always helpful but tend to remain in the sidelines with the focus set primarily on the underlying conflicts. Overall, this third book is a quick but relevant read to the continuity of the series that only promises more thrilling action, exciting adventures, and a world that’s just begging to be explored completely.

In terms of writing style, this book shows the growth of N.K. Leem as an author, being able to blend the lighter and heavier tones together and creating transitions that are not jarring while maintaining the story’s raw beauty. The writing is simplistic making the story easy to follow instead of bearing down complex lexicon to the detriment of the storytelling. If there’s one thing that’s vague about the writing style, it’s the voice that tends to shift between that of adult and middle-grade fantasy. Other than that, Leem’s ability to expand the story from a worldly perspective coupled with the exploration of its culture is amazing and one that deserves more presence in the coming sequels. What’s also noteworthy is the memorability of the various dishes introduced in this book as their description tends to water the mouths of readers as they materialize in their imagination especially hadoli. As previously mentioned, this series is reminiscent of The Inheritance Cycle, one of my favorite series, in terms of world-building and narrative style. N.K. Leem is an author who’s growing with the vast world she’s created and everything is only going uphill from here on out.

The best aspect of the series is definitely the characters with Thaleon and Dawyn at the forefront of individuals who deserve to be rooted for. Thaleon grows into a more charming character from his cutesy persona in the previous books. His growth includes that of his mind and his heart. Still, he remains to be the most lovable character of the book whose presence always creates this warm and cheery feeling. Dawyn also grows in terms of his relationships and maturity. His internal struggle into considering how valekyns aren’t all bad is interesting to explore further as it poses a pivotal part of the series. The best part about the characters is the bond among them. The strongest of which remains to be the one between Dawyn and Thaleon because of the brotherly love they exude since the first book. Aside from that, Dawyn and Thaleon’s respective friendships give the story more color as the trope of found families makes them stronger and formidable. Though I’m not a big fan of romance, the ones in the book are touch and go since they’re polarizing in the sense that they’re predictable but well-executed and adorable. The characters are truly a delight to read about and I wish more connections will be made and revealed as the series progresses.

The cover for Edge of Tempest gives off the same vibe as the plot -- like wandering into the woods and making magnificent and interesting discoveries. If there’s a word to describe the overall feel of the cover, it’s wanderlust as the reader is treated to different adventures with varying levels of awe. The cover’s color palette remains artistic and divine while the font style contributes to the fantastical aspect of the series. Like the cover, the synopsis brings forth a thrill that can only be found in fantasy novels. This shows that the series is created in the same vein as the hallmarks of the genre. With reserved words, the summary gives off an exciting and mysterious vibe that adds to the reader’s thrill. Hand in hand, the cover and the summary both entice the reader to dive into the series and find out just how lovable the story is.

I write with pride and humility as this series continues to fill my days with fantastical elements that remain timeless -- a magic system that’s simple yet expansive, a world that’s wide but slowly explored, and characters as lovable as they come. Ledgers of a Dark Mage is consistent in being a memorable and lovable series and I’m bracing myself for the storm that’s coming.

This book was everything that I'd been waiting for and more! Edge of Tempest picks up a few months after the events of book two and both Dawyn and Thaleon have been enjoying some downtime. But, it doesn't last long.

Thaleon has a wedding to attend and just when you think that things are going well a bunch of valekyns launch an attack on everyone present. And this is not the first time this has happened. There have been many such attacks all across the kingdom and noone knows why this is happening right now.
Thaleon's sponsorship event is also coming up and he needs to figure out his future too!

On the other hand, Dawyn has been training hard and is now a wehr. Just when he's started to relax a bit, he ends up being chosen for a mission in order to capture the valekyns responsible for the attack on Brisdon. And of course Dawyn's friend - Fanvi, the battle mage can't let him go off alone because he knows how hopeless he's at keeping himself safe. So he ends up going along with Dawyn.

After many twists and turns, the paths that the two brothers are on has begun to converge. But what will Dawyn do if he were to find out that Thaleon is a valekyn? And how will Thaleon react?

I think this has been my favorite book in the series so far! Both Thaleon and Dawyn have undergone so much character development! They've had to go through so much pain, learn new things, make friends and mature quickly! I admire their resilience! They also have some of their own weaknesses to fight against too! Thaleon still has a lot to learn when it comes to trusting others and he has to deal with being a valekyn and hiding it in a world where it is a crime to be one. Dawyn on the other hand, has seen firsthand the cruelty that the valekyns are capable of and he has to work on his feelings of hatred towards them.

To add some lightness to the story, we've got Fanvi (whom I totally love) and not that it's been a secret - but I've been totally shipping him and Dawyn from the moment he showed up in book two!
“And for the record”— a wicked gleam entered Fanvi’s eyes—“ I have been told— by multiple people— that I am very good at certain physical things.”
How can you not love him? xD

I was scared for all of my favorite characters at so many points in the book! I went from being excited to scared to happy and then even more scared lol!

The last few chapters had me on the edge of my seat! I don't want to give away any more spoilers but that ending had me going ahhh! I hope we get book 4 soon because I really need it now!

I had to mark this for spoilers since I couldn't properly gush over what I wanted to gush over without giving stuff away.

Again this was a wild ride of a story, though there were some more quiet moments, just enough to lull you into a false sense of security. It seemed slower paced than the last two, but there's still plenty of action *cough*charactertorture*cough* so don't worry.
I love how it is very character centric while also having an exciting plot, some books seem to only be able to do one or the other.

The characters are still their sweet selves, Thal has grown into a handsome young man, at least according to slightly pervy seamstresses and their apprentices (and one dirty old guy, yuck!). He is still having to hide his true self from his friends, they are also starting to go their separate ways now they are old enough to get sponsorships. A significant event happens that could negatively affect one of his friendships in the future which will be interesting yet heartbreaking to see in future books. His and Lyris' relationship is very sweet, I mean, it's no Danvi but they're still cute. I also would like to say...I knew she knew!
We get more of Laurits in this than we did book 2 which I'm grateful for, I love his grumpy older brother role. He seems so strict but he's a big softie really and I enjoyed his teasing about Thal's crush. I also love the father son relationship Thal has with Cedrik, so heartwarming.
Dawyn is still a self sacrificing hero type (much to Fanvi's annoyance, though he can talk, he's just as bad sometimes), you can always count on him to jump into trouble without quite thinking it through first. I'm a bit concerned about his feelings about dark mages but I have full confidence in Fanvi and his love for Thal to sort that out. If you are like me you will be happy to know that the author has finally seen to it to put us out of our misery and finally have Dawyn and Fanvi kiss, but not without teasing us unmercifully first of course. I did shout 'for god's sake just kiss already' at the book a couple of times. It had my inner shipper dancing for joy (I also may have happy squealed outload) while also wondering what disaster was just around the corner to ruin the moment.
And we also finally get our long awaited reunion! I was so happy but also so scared at the same time, I just love them so much! I want them to be together, a family again.

I kind of felt that the whole deadly contagious disease plot about halfway through didn't seem to be needed other than to show how hardworking and caring Thal is. Otherwise this was another great instalment of the series and has set up some great plot points for the next one, I can't wait!

I REALLY want a baby killif! Give me!

I think that this book was my favorite in this series thus far! So many things I wanted to happen happened, and the story took readers on quite the journey.

Throughout the past three books I’ve been able to see the good and the bad that inhabits the vivid and lush world inside these books, and this book definitely expanded on that as well as showed off more of N. K. Leem’s world building and character development skills. This ending also left me SHOOK and desperate for more, so I cannot wait to see what happens in the next book!

If you’re a fan of fantasy novels that have intense world building, realistic and incredibly lovably characters, diversity and LGBTQIA+ representation, and plot twists at every turn then you need to check out this series!

I was provided an ARC by the author in exchange for an honest review.

(Very mild spoilers? Mostly things are just vaguely alluded to - otherwise tagged.)

Good news! I will not travel to the author's house to throw legos on all the floors... I will however have to shower off all that blood that splashed out of the book while reading now. Good thing I look absolutely stunning in red!

Our two various-levels-of-intrepid-depending-on-who-is-in-danger heroes are at it again, wreaking havoc without meaning to (it just kind of happens when you care about people who keep getting attacked, okay?).

While Thaleon is trying on fancy clothes and (potentially) dancing at a wedding without embarassing himself of his surrogate family, Dawyn is busy with civillians getting attacked and teaching Fanvi how to use a sword (which of those things is the more difficult task is up for debate).

Of course they're surrounded by lots of characters of dubious morals and various levels of intellect who are always in all sorts of danger! (Fun times! Take two deaths for the price of one! Maybe three!)

Still the core of their stories are the connections they made to certain people along the way and of course the memories they have of their past together.

Thaleon has Lord Bayn who is a bit like a surrogate father for him and I'm glad he had more pagetime this time around. Laurits is essentially another brother figure at this point (whom still everyone and their maids want to bang), as well as his teacher and of course Lyris is still there as his best friend/crush and I'm happy to report that for the first time I actually actively liked her. I was never bothered by her or anything, but she was rather bland before and now I'm fond of her and I'm glad. Helps that she clearly has the brains in that relationship.

Dawyn has... uhm. Fanvi!? Some random fellow wehrs I guess? And maaaybe some people from his recent-ish past. I don't mind, because in this house we stan Fanvi and support him every time he wants to hit Dawyn over the head for almost getting himself killed... while also wanting Dawyn to play the hero all the time cause it's very dashing. Fanvi and I are very confused about that, okay? He also keeps flip-flopping on what he thinks about dark mages, so clearly Fanvi isn't done with his work there. Luckily, he is also someone with a few braincells. He and Lyris need to start a support group.

I liked the development in both their romantic relationships quite a lot and hope to see them deepening in the future. I'm pretty excited to see where those go. (Let's be real, as much as I joke about all the deaths and suffering in this series, I do need at least a few bright spots. I don't do bleak. I think it's boring.)

Another thing I'm glad to report is that while I'd still like a map, I now have a better grasp at what the world looks like this story is taking place in. The descriptions of the places the brothers travelled to were vivid and I liked to see the cultural differences. (Now I also want snake-y like fishies to nibble on my fingers!)

There was one thing that confused/bothered me, though. I have no idea how the timeline works. While Dawyn's story goes in a straight line and feels like it took maybe two months, Thaleon's side kept jumping a few months so I guess a whole year went by? Maybe I missed something?

Thus the plot about the

Also the (MAJOR SPOILER!)

I also hope to see more fallouts happening from all the horrible stuff that keeps happening to them and people they know. I don't really mean (just) a few (more) breakdowns, but also... policy? Noble houses get involved all the time and somehow nothing changes in any major way. Back to the status quo a few pages later.

All in all, I really enjoyed reading this installment of the series and thought it was the strongest one yet (... and this is not shipping bias talking. That's just an insistent whisper in the backround.). Looking forward to the next one! (My legos might be in a drawer now, but the drawer is still open!)

Edge of Tempest: Ledgers of A Dark Mage #3
⭐⭐⭐⭐

Note: I received an e-ARC of this book from the author in exchange for an honest review. All opinions are my own.

Edge of Tempest is the third book in the Ledgers of a Dark Mage series by N.K. Leem. It has been several months after Thaleon’s return from Taliehin, and exciting times are coming for him. Him and his friends will be guests at a grand wedding, and his sponsorship event is soon to come, Meanwhile, Dawyn is now officially a wehr and he is finally getting a break after all of his hard work. But war is brewing on the horizon, and destruction is imminent.

Edge of Tempest is the type of book where I just had to read one more chapter before bed…which became another chapter…and another chapter. There’s so much happening in this book that I absolutely had to keep reading. It’s hard to write multiple POVs and balance them in a way where each POV is just as interesting as the other(s), but this is something that the author does so well. This is very consistent with the other books in the series; I’m so invested in the characters and couldn’t wait to see what happened to them next.

Something else that I noticed about this series is how the world continually builds on itself. This isn’t the kind of series where all of the worldbuilding is thrown onto you at once; instead, you get things in bits and pieces where the world feels more real. Throughout this book, you’ll continue to discover intricate details about the different towns, their cultures, and celebrations. (Can I have some hadoli please? There were so many pastries in this book I wanted so badly to try!)

What I really liked for this book in particular was the balance between light and dark scenes. In the beginning, I was skeptical of romantic relationships developing for both characters at the same time, but as the book progresses you can see how their relationships evolved into their own separate entities.

Speaking of relationships, this book covers quite a few romantic and platonic relationships. And while there were some scenes I was anticipating and loved in this book, there was one scene in particular that I was a bit underwhelmed by. Regardless, this book is my favorite in the series so far.

Overall, Edge of Tempest was a great third book for the series. There was so much that happened here that I was looking forward to, and so much I can’t wait to read about in the coming books. If you haven’t read this series yet, do pick it up! If you devoured the books like I did you’ll be caught up in no time.

I received an ARC copy of this amazing fantasy book from author, in exchange for an honest review.
I shared my love for the previous two books here as well, and although I certainly loved them, this was the book which completely caught my heart - I loved every bit of it!

The magic continues, and Edge of Tempest is such a great sequel that shows how much our main characters have grown again, but they certainly took very different paths in their lives.
What I also loved about this book is that the whole atmosphere was quite lighter than in the first two books. You can exactly see how the author's writing improved. Leem describes the conflict between valekyns and elarkyns perfectly, and although it breaks my heart to see our Dawyn and Thaleon being on the opposite sides, it's even harder knowing how much they love each other and care for each other - and brotherly love is above all, and that's how it should always be.

Next favorite thing is - romance! While I was reading *certain* parts, I was basically screaming "yes, yes and yess!" all the time! I think we definitely got what we all wanted and hoped for, and my shipping heart was melting. I can't even describe how happy I was to finally get that spark of romance I wanted so badly. It all happened just at the right pace - not to soon, not too late. Some things had to happen for love to be revealed, and I'm trying to write this review without any spoilers, but trust me - there will be pain, hurt, sorrow and angst. But after rain comes the sunshine, and with it, a rainbow!

Also, there is a lot of development between Lyris and Thaleon. They've always supported each other, protected each other, cared and worried for each other. In this book, you will see some moments of truth, and trust me when I say that I was so nervous when I read those parts. Because honestly, Thaleon deserves it all. He deserves to be accepted for what he is, after he was thrown around and humiliated for his looks, his whole being, his pure soul and loving heart that no one would be able to see if they knew he was a valekyn.

I must say that I needed more! That ending was bittersweet - you'll see what I mean when you read it. You will be craving for more time, more information and more love. Leem, I can tell you that this is truly your best book so far, and I absolutely loved it! And now I need more!

I also have to mention the cover, which perfectly describes the atmosphere of this book. The forest, colors - it's like Leem took us directly into the world of shadows and portals, lurking trees, monsters hidden somewhere in between, far away from the sight, where they are waiting, silent. Waiting for someone to come, someone to feed on.

It was a great read for me, just dark enough for my taste and full of new adventures. The world building is expanding, and it's just so amazing. I enjoyed it so much, and I can't wait to see how the story will continue!

Another excellent book in a series I'm so hooked on!

We pick up the story a few months after book two. Thaleon's life is getting exciting. He's getting ready to attend a grand wedding, and his first sponsorship event is coming soon. His life is tailor appointments for fancy new clothes, and dancing lessons with Lyris so he hopefully won't embarrass himself in front of the nobles at the wedding.

Meanwhile, Dawyn is finally an official wehr in the crown's army. Between trying to teach Fanvi to use a sword and visiting with old friends come to town, he's defending civilians from valekyn attacks.

But as we've come to expect with this series, downtime can only last so long before danger comes knocking. And well, it definitely has. It's more like banging down the door. If you've read this series, or at least my reviews, you know there's no shortage of heartbreaks in these books. This one has felt the least painful though! It was nice to see so much more of the world and the culture. And oh I'm so hungry now because of the wonderful foods described! I loved seeing so much more of the culture and traditions! And it was woven into the story so well. Sometimes when an author talks about those things, it can mess with the pacing and plot. But I think it was really integrated well!
I could still use a map, but overall, the world is really taking shape and making sense in my head.

As always, character development takes the front seat. I love that about these books. I love seeing our boys grow and struggle and change. They're both still grappling with the overall conflict of the country- are dark mages all bad? And it's so interesting to see how they both handle this. And oh boy, we finally get some relationships developing!! My romantic heart is so happy! I'm so excited to see these play out. I also feel like the developing romances give us some much needed happiness and moments of joy in a series that is full of moments to rip your heart out.
And there's just some other events in the book that made my heart happy! I don't want to say too much and spoil anything though!

I am still so in love with this series! There's still so much left to see and explore with this storyline, and each book just keeps getting better. I absolutely recommend grabbing this series and getting into it, because it's amazing! I'm eagerly awaiting book four!!!

I received a free copy of this book courtesy of the author in exchange for an honest review.

This is the third book in the series, and I think it is just as good as the previous two. Leem has a great talent for writing, and I think that much of what works so well in this book is buoyed by the writing. One of the things that I would like to point out is the writing is extraordinarily descriptive. There is nothing left to the imagination at times, because the world feels real. The world building hasn’t really increased so much as our perception of it has changed as have the views of the characters. This is what makes the books so interesting. You never know what is coming next because our characters are constantly growing and changing.

The plot in and of itself is good – I enjoy it. But what I love more than the plot is the characters. There is just something so exciting about these characters. They all feel very unique and different from each other, which makes the book intriguing and interesting. I will say, the plot picks up from the previous one, and we learn even more about the truth of the past. I’m very curious to see where this plot is going to take us in the end. I only hope for a happy ending for all these characters that I have grown to love. Fanvi remains my favorite. He is just so amusing and brings light to this book even when we hit some dark moments. I truly love all the relationships that have been built up in this series.

As with the last book we continue to get dual POVs of an issue, which has become more complicated than ever before. And I will say that this book is full of action and excitement. The last book felt like it was a bit slower paced, whereas this one was much faster. Things were happening and changing quickly. We say relationships founded and hardened in this book and I liked that. Fanvi and Thal and Dawyn and Lyris are all such great characters you can’t help but root for them!
I’m so excited to read the next book in the series – I absolutely have to know what is going to happen after that cliffhanger!

I don't touch much on the plot because so much of it is spoiler-y in this book. Some important events do happen though!

Edge of Tempest is the third Ledgers of a Dark Mage series, we find ourselves a few months after the events of the previous book.

Thaleon and his friends almost finish their studies, they are ready to leave the castle and worki in Itothia, but first they must present a test to prove their knowledge. Thaleon and Lyris decide to perform together (as they are both healing apprentices)

The friendship between Thaleon and Lyris is gradually transforming, they are no longer the children of the first book, their feelings have matured and taken another form. (and they are the cutest)

Meanwhile the valekyns attacks have been increasing, with it, the terror of the people and the kingdom is alert.

Dawyn is officially a wehr, he is chosen for the mission to search and capture the valekyns responsible for the latest attacks. He is accompanied by Fanvi (since he cannot let Dawyn get into trouble without him to save him)

Together they will find danger, but after an (almost unfortunate) encounter they will have a few moments of peace and fun. (well deserved)

Throughout the saga, the worldbuilding grows slowly, the author gives little details here and there, the details of culture, parties, the city food or animals makes you want to go to explore too.

The path of both brothers is still full of twists when they think they know their future, fate (or the author) puts new challenges and surprises in their way. Both will have a new challenge, what they believed impossible know maybe can be now possible, the last chapter just leaves you wanting to know more.

Something that I love is the relationship between characters, the friendship is goals. The characters are well built and they grow and mature throughout the series, they are not afraid to express their feelings, fears or emotions.

Thanks to the author for sending me the book, I really enjoyed it.

I was provided and e-arc by the author for an honest review.
"Flames exploded in the air, drawing loud gasps from the crowd. the fire-breather followed up with another blast into the night sky, her heavy jewelry and bright silks glinting in the fiery light."

3.5/5 stars for Edge of Tempest. I really loved this one, not as much as the one that came before it but still really loved it. Edge of Tempest was not short on action. It kept you on your toes and yet again left you with a giant hangover. N.K. Leem is pretty good at those XD. I can't tell you how many gifs we have exchanged while I've been reading through her books. I'm starting to run out of ideas of hilarious gifs to send.

Something I really enjoy about Leem's writing is the fact that the world is continuously growing. It isn't thrown at you from the beginning like it is in other series like The Daevabad Trilogy. It's spread out wonderfully. I think at this point we're going to need a map or something to keep track of all the towns. Also... a character sheet.

The characters in this series continuously surprise me with how much they have grown. Fanvi and Dawyn are as cute as ever. Then we have Lyris and Thaleon and Riel and ausdjfhuiruhfui! They all keep growing even with the minor setbacks.

"The boy spun the duster into the glittering clouds, withdrew it carefully and closed the case. He gently shook the feathers over the plate- gold dust fell in glittering waves, coating the mini cakes evenly."

I'm also wondering when we're getting a cookbook? lol. The amount of food in this book definitely calls for a cookbook. I want glittering cakes that come out making me really happy and you know coffee that also makes me equally happy. Alright, now i'm rambling.

As a series goes on I find it continuously harder to write a review. I really hope more people decide to read this series. It's got so much potential. Go check out the first book! What are you waiting for!?

This series is emotional torture, and I keep coming back, heart in hand, begging 'More Please!'.

If you're reading this series, you know what I'm talking about. If you're not, you're missing out!

Good news: I didn't bawl during this installment.
Bad news: I think I may have suffered a few heart attacks and a small stroke!

Fanvi and Dawyn (Fanwyn) are still as close as ever. They may have become the poster boys for mage/wehr cooperation, but that's not slowing down the banter and shenanigans. When some old friends visit and there's an attack, off the boys go on a pulse-pounding mission. I'm calling it The Adventures of Fanwyn. As usual, they can't help but throw themselves directly into the line of fire. Lucky for us readers, their warm and fuzzy moments make up for tormenting us. So much awwwwwww! 🥰🥰🥰

Thaleon, on the other hand, is trying to keep himself out of trouble. Boring! It's a good thing trouble finds him, or he'd just be sitting in the infirmary for an entire book. In Thaleon's storyline, Cedrik and Laurits keep busy by making my heart overflow. I must have had some serious grinch moments. I'm positive you could see my heart grow three sizes! To be fair, Thal does eventually get to twisting up our insides too, so you Thaleon fans will get what you need.

Edge of Tempest is the book we've been waiting for. So much happens, and I can't discuss a single one without spoilers. It's killing me!

I have no choice but to give this book 5 stars. These characters that I love so much continue to learn and grow, and the plot is beautifully crafted; weaving the characters together and then tearing them apart as if in an intricate dance designed to drive us mad. I'm convinced that N.K.Leem is some sort of evil genius. Well played.

Now, if only I could get my hands on that time-turner for her... I'm not sure how I'll manage to wait months for book four.

Before I start this review, I’d like to thank the author for sending me an ARC in exchange for an honest review. You’re the best! :D

Now, as I’m writing this, I still feel all of the feels this book has given me. Because omg!! A ton of crazy and amazing things happened in this book. As Thanos would say, “it is perfectly balanced as all things should be.” (Which is totally the case with this book!)
Two of the major things I’d been hoping for happened, one of them pretty much being there on my wishlist since book 1! I’m beyond happy that Dawyn and Thal finally reunited despite the crazy circumstances they were facing at the time. Now I just neeeed to know what’s going to happen in book 4! I know that Dawyn doesn’t want to admit it, but I’m sure that deep down he knows Thal’s true power.
Also, I totally called it in my mind. I mean, Lyris knewww!! She knew it and never said anything! And then there’s how dedicated she is to Thal. Because let me tell you. The poor kid has gone through the worst of the worst at times and can’t seem to catch a break. At ALL. Despite the circumstances, I’m still happy that Thal has someone to share his inner turmoil with. Lyris is probably the only person who can really understand him right now and I’m so here for it!!
The same goes for Fanvi. He deserves to be protected at all costs! He’s total boyfriend material and I am obsessed with the fact that DANVI is now a real thing!!! There were so many moments where I though omg omg omg it’s happening!!! They’re going to confess their love for each other!!! But the moment it happened was absolutely perfect. These two are made for each other and I can’t imagine them without one another anymore.

Now that my half rant is over, I’ll just go and float around in my Danvi world until the next book comes out. 😎
This entire review has been hidden because of spoilers.

Book three! The world-building continues to be one of my favourite aspects of this series and I appreciate how naturally details are unfolded to the reader. We encounter more magical creatures and get a lot of mouth-watering glimpses into the cuisine. A wedding that takes place at the beginning of this book incorporates details on marriage customs and religious practices.

Lyris is shaping up to be one of my favourite characters and I was so thrilled that she had a much bigger role in this book compared to the previous two. She and Thaleon have an incredibly sweet connection that may be less dynamic than Fanvi and Dawyn’s, but is very strong and loyal. I just love her!

Speaking of Fanvi, he is absolutely hilarious and his and Dawyn’s bond has strengthened so much since their first meeting. It has just been a delight to watch it unfold.

This time around I particularly enjoyed Thaleon’s chapters - in contrast to the previous books where I was more partial to Dawyn’s storyline. The first part of the story felt a bit episodic and at first I didn’t love it quite as much as the previous instalment, but in the second half the story really picked up and kicked off! I can’t remember the last time I tore through chapters so fast just to see what would happen, and I’m still reeling from that ending…!!

#cookie reads Edge of Tempest by N.K. Leem @n.k.leem ❤️
Book 3 of the Ledgers of a Dark Mages follows Dawyn and Thaleon. Dawyn is a wehr and Fanvi is still around!!! Thaleon meanwhile is at Allesdale getting ready to go to a wedding!! Meanwhile valekyns are destroying cities and slaughtering innocents. Can Thaleon and Dawyn stop them? Will Thaleon be able to show that not all valekyns are evil? 🧝
Pros: Romance romance and romance!!! Ahhh Fawyn and Danvi. ❤️ and Thyris or Lyleon (whichever works). ❤️
The return of Vikron and Nief. Man I have missed those characters. But it is awesome to see Vikron care so much after all these years. ⛵️
Cons: length I like long books can feel this book could have been longer. Also no map 🗺......
A reunion happens and it is awesome! But one cannot help but wonder what will happen when (not if) Dawyn figures out Thaleon secret. 👊
Be aware: the book does end on a semi cliffhanger. And I think I have to wait months to read the fourth book!!! Meanwhile more Fawyn (Danvi) please!!! 😍

I received an ARC from the author in an exchange for an honest review.
Edge of Tempest is the third book in Ledgers of a Dark Mage series.
It's really hard for me to write something without spoiling everything. 😁
In this exciting sequel we continue to follow the adventures of our sweet boys Dawyn and Thaleon. As their paths grow closer the danger is increasing for both of them.
This book was a constant roller-coaster of feelings for me. At one point I was afraid to read on scared of what might happen next. One moment we have some really sweet, long waited moments and than in the next whole hell breaks loose.
I really enjoyed the writing style. It's so easy to read. I really cared for the characters from book one. The supporting characters are also amazing. Fanvi is my favorite. He is so loyal and fierce. Lyris was amazing in this book too. I liked that we got to see more of her.
I'm looking forward to the next book in the series.

I am in love with “The Ledgers of Dark Mage” series! “Edge of Tempest” is the 3rd book in the series and the action and intrigue are nonstop. The magical world that N.K. Leem creates gets bigger in imagination and size as you journey with the characters throughout the story and encounter new demons and spells. It’s hard not to give away spoilers, but what I love the most is that there is never a dull moment in each book - the characters continue to grow emotionally and in their skill for magic, relationships start to form, and battles between mages rage on. On top of that, the author is not afraid to deal with relevant issues such as LGBT romance and racism. In this world, being a “Valekyn” mage can get you killed, even though they are innocent and no different from the other mages. I’m already excited to read the next book!

This is my favourite book in the series so far. They just keep getting better!

Thaleon nears the end of his training in healing magic at Allesdale and hopes to be selected by a sponsor. But first there is a grand wedding to attend. Cedrik, Laurits and Lyris prepare to make the journey to Vakh’alem.
Meanwhile Dawyn is chosen for a dangerous mission. Fanvi volunteers for to go along in order to stop Dawyn from being too nobel and killing himself.

Thaleon and Dawyn’s paths draw nearer as Valekyns begin attacking cities. Danger lurks around every corner for these wayward brothers.

I read this book in two sittings, it was so good! The fast-paced plot, constant excitement and intrigue makes it hard to put down.

I feel like I know these characters really well now. I loved seeing the relationships and friendships develop further in this book, and I was constantly hoping that my favourite characters would stay alive. There were so many good moments between Dawyn and Fanvi. The dynamic and banter between them is amazing.

Like the first two books, there is a wonderful amount of magicalness mixed in with destruction, chaos and death. There are more magical creatures and the map grows wider as we are introduced to new places, all filled with their own dangers.

I was sent a eARC from the author for an honest review!

Edge of Tempest is the third installment in Leem’s Ledgers of a Dark Mage series and I think this was BY FAR my absolute favorite so far! With a few months passing since the events of her second book, Shape of Nightmares, a lot has changed in a small bit of time that will lead to Dawyn and Thaleon’s grand adventures that take place in this book!

This book offered so much more then the first two books for me. From dark and bloody scenes full of unimaginable monsters to light and fluffy scenes that I was rooting for the whole time, this book gave me all of the MAJOR feels. So much happens in this book that I found myself biting my nails the whole time and just couldn’t seem to put it down!

This book also offered some more in depth views into the small towns and cultures of the people in this story. From delicious desserts and food to celebrations and dances, there were just so many scene I throughly enjoyed and found myself smiling at. But with the good comes the bad and there was always evil lurking around the corner.

The story is ultimately about two kinds of people viewing the other as evil and one just wanting to be viewed as equals and will do whatever it takes to make that dream possible.

I can’t wait to see what Leem brings to the next installment!

I was provided with an eARC in exchange for my honest review.

Our brothers are getting older and really coming into their own in this installment of the Ledgers of a Dark Mage series. Thaleon has begun to learn all about courtly manners and fancy dress - it is hard to believe it's the same boy we met being torn from his family two books ago. His heart and his goodness remain, even as the world is torn apart by the deep divides between magic users in Itothia. There is a lot of great payoff from earlier in the series and it was so wonderful to see how it played out. Dawyn continues his journey to a greater understanding of the duality of magic and the nature of humanity.

What I appreciate about NK Leem's writing most is the lack of exposition and allowing us to become acquainted with the world through the eyes of our heroes. Despite being a story of magic, it is grounded in characterization.

Now, my spoilery thoughts!

As I great fan of fantasy books, I am always happy to receive an ARC and enter another fantasy world
I received an ARC from the author in exchange for an honest review.
It is not easy to write a review without any spoilers, so I am trying.
And once you enter this magic world, you simply can’t leave it without reading the whole story till the end.
The characters are so interesting, that you can not pick only one favorite.
There are so many twists and turns, that you simply can’t stop reading.
And the last pages, last words are so emotional that I can’t stop thinking about the book 4 already.

Honestly this book... I messaged the author several times with some profanity because the emotions! The CHAOS! Why am I not allowed to have some happiness in this series!

The story is captivating as usual, Dawyn and Thal have evolved so much since the first book, and the story takes so many heart stopping turns that I was literally panicked and put it down several times😩. I can’t wait for the next instalment in the series (please let it contain dragons PLEASE) and I’m prepared to be just as heartbroken then as I am now!

This arc was provided to me by the author for an honest review.

I’m super late with my review here because well… 2020, but I really ended up really enjoying this next installment of this series! I can't give too much away plot wise about this one because it is book 3 in the series, but I can say that we follow our two main characters, Thaleon, now 16, and Dawyn, 19/20 (I'm not completely sure about his exact age), as they continue their training in their respective fields. This book also gets more into their relationships, both platonic and romantic, and I can honestly say that I really enjoyed this part of the story. I loved seeing both Thaleon and Dawyn grow and come into their own. Also, my ship is sailing and it’s giving me so much life! ***insert all the heart eye emojis here*** The magical aspects of the plot are starting to be explained more and the world is being expanded in a really interesting way. I really love how much the world has grown since the first book. I can’t wait to see where our characters go from here! This book was definitely the most action packed of the three so far and I ended up flying through it because I needed to know what was going to happen next! Also, that ending?!?!? Like, cliffhanger much! I need book 4 like now!

My Rating: 4/5⭐️

The pacing of this novel is great and is definitely a very immersive read. This book had me hooked and ended in such a way that I've been dying to get my hands on the next book. Relationships evolve wonderfully throughout this book and it is extremely exciting to see my beloved characters grow. We get more of the world and the magic expands even more. The author has very cleverly created a very suspense filled ending that has you dying to see what happens. The stakes have always been very high and our characters have always been walking on thin glass, now the glass has started to crack. A must read. (didn't mention any character names to keep it extremely spoiler free).
