I read the first 2 books thinking that the premise was interesting and the characters and storyline ok, but there were some things I didn't like about Walsh ....... missing obvious clues, not really investigating ... more like following what other people suggest to him, having a totally unrealistic and adversarial relationship with the Sherriff's office which benefits neither party, and finally the classic "just friends" relationship with his co-investigator (even though there is no indication why they like each other), waiting for it to develop into a love relationship .
Well, in this book all those things were on full display to the point I quit after 1/4 the way through. Just not worth the effort, hoping that it will bet better knowing there are 4 more books after this one based on the same formula.
Henry has been living on his friend Philip's boat for the last 3 years. Now Philip is getting married to Victoria, and he had to move off the boat. Billy lets him stay above his bar/restaurant and run his business from there. Philip's boat ends up getting blown up and he is presumed dead. Victoria gets kidnapped and the ransom is a Crystal Pelican. I was supposedly made with a very rare crystal. The question remains as to whether the boat explosion was supposed to kill Phillip or Henry. Henry and Felix need to find out. Then Henry's car gets blown up and he narrowly escapes that. Seems like it must be Henry that someone wants to dispose of. Between old women and married ex-girlfriends, it will be hard to stay alive while he and Alex try to find Victoria.
My rating about 2.5-2.75. Just came across this series on hoopla and will use as a filler between more of my favorites.
PI, Henry Walsh lives on Peter's (a friend sort of) boat in the marina. Peter has asked him to vacate so and his fiancee can stay aboard. Now living above a bar at another friends place, he gets a call that the fiancee has been kidnapped. No sooner does he get to the boat, it explodes. His friend is missing, presumed dead but Henry keeps his promise and starts the hunt for the fiancee.
There are shootings, more bombs as he and his partner Alex go looking and find the reason for it all is a missing crystal penguin that everyone wants. The explanation of the statues value is a bit weird but Henry and Alex follow all leads to get answers.
So many mystery books have a main character that is portrayed as perfect—perfect brain, perfect body, perfect car, perfect house. Well I certainly can’t say that about Henry Walsh. I truly enjoy his imperfection— that’s what makes the series so good and entertaining. Thank you!
The first 2 books I really enjoyed, in this one you turned Henry into a dumbass. I hope Henry gets a bit smarter. He doesn’t have to be Sherlock Homes, just not an idiot. The storyline was a good one. I will read the next one, please don’t make him stupid anymore.
