They say only the good die young. If that’s true, I lost two of the greatest. I lived most of my life trying to do the right thing, and failing miserably. Although the crime that broke me was one I’d willingly commit again. After spending two years locked up, I’m back to face all the damage I left behind. My girlfriend is engaged to someone else. My best friend is a widow. Both of these women still own a piece of my heart, but only one of them has had it since the beginning.
Tess
They say time heals all wounds. If that’s true, I’d need ten lifetimes to get over mine. For most of my life, I was blessed with friendships and love few people ever get to experience. Although I’d give it all back if I got to keep the one’s we lost in the process. After spending the last six months trying to keep my head above water, I’m not sure how much longer I can tread. My husband was murdered. My best friend is gone. Both of these men have molded the shape of my heart, but only one of them has his name inked on my soul.
But I can’t really give it all the stars cuz it’s barely a romance.
Less than 25% is really building the H/h romance. It spent more time on H/OW toxic relationship (whose book is called TOXIC). He still loved the OW the entire book even knowing she was a toxic pit.
There was no great love story here.
Just a guy with no real future in a small town who deals drugs he never meant to get deeply involved in just to get a little bit ahead in life. Goes to jail for beating a guy who sexually assaulted his sister. Gets released and starts this weird relationship with the widow of his partner in crime while STILL fucking his OW who’s engaged to someone else.
*facepalm*
I should love that plot with 5 stars. How fucked up and real is that plot??? Cuz the billionaire mc cheaty pants and a pocket sized Barbie gets old.
I just wish I’d read this H get his real with the h. I got a great story…not a great romance. 10-20k more of H/h page time building their relationship and this would have been 5 stars. As it is, he’s in the next book and he goes to rescue the OW from her H. It was painful. I just can’t. I don’t believe he ever lets the OW go.
This was read as a beta read, pre-editing. I've beta read all of the Cherry Grove books and this is by far my favorite. After meeting Perry in Book 3, I so desperately wanted his story and it was so much better than I could have imagined.
Told in duel POV with past and present timelines, Cole Lepley has woven an intricate story of love, loss and ... something more. There's a love triangle with characters you will hate but then come to love. The storyline for this book I found so intriguing as it verged on the cusp of criminal activity and Cole kept me glued to the pages desperate to find out exactly what was going on and how it would unravel and impact the characters. The version I read was really well done.
When the author sent it to me she specifically said she hoped I would cry when I read it. I laughed. As an avid reader of all genres, I do get emotionally involved with the characters so I knew it could happen but I wasn't sure it would with a beta read. When I returned the book I had to tell her that among all the laughing, cheering, wall smashing, foot stomping, nail biting, there was a moment or three where I did shed a tear. I love Perry. I love Tess. I love Walker. I even love Sloan, and have been told one of them will get their own book - but I can't say because it's probably a spoiler :)
I want to start by saying that Cole Lepley is one of my favorite authors out there today. She is able to write her books with an incredible amount of love. Her books have a pull that has you aching to read more and more. Her characters have such a depth to them. You can feel their emotions, mentally see them and almost hear them speak. You become so immersed in her writing that you are mentally in their world, not yours. That style of writing makes for an amazingly talented author. I have had the pleasure of speaking with her and she is kind and so appreciative of all her readers. She writes for us. As for Tortured…. This was Perry’s story. We met Perry in Torn, when Mackenzie needed her big, bad brother to save the day. Well, Perry is back to face his haunting past head on. After more than one tragedy in his life, and a 2 year stay in jail, it's fair to say Perry was having a hard time finding his way. Perry and his close friends were more of a family than anything while they were young. Jeremy, Walker, Perry and Tess… 4 pieces of a puzzle. Perry and Tess were very close friends growing up. They cared so much for each other, but were also in deep committed relationships with other people. While growing up, life happens. Tragedy after tragedy. Tess and Perry were forced in two separate directions. Tortured is their story. A story of heartbreak, sadness, growth, anger, protection, and most of all… true love. The kind that is meant to be. A kind of love that even Mother Nature herself cannot stop. If you're a fan of the Cherry Grove series, you have to continue on with Tortured. There is nothing better than reading a book that has you feeling all the emotions. There were times that I would laugh out loud. I've caught myself shedding tears for Perry and Tess multiple times throughout this story. When I turned the last page of this book, I had to actually close my eyes and just breathe for a few….amazing.
Tortured by Cole Lepley is a contemporary romance that will be released on September 28, 2020.
This is the fourth book in the Cherry Grove series and can be read as a stand-alone.
This is the first book of Cole’s that I have read and it definitely won’t be my last. She had me hooked from the very beginning. Perry and Tess story was emotional and heartbreaking at times. I loved that we got Perry and Tess’s points of view throughout the book. It really makes the story come to life.
I would highly recommend this book to anyone who loves contemporary romance, friends to lovers or forbidden romances.
Wow this book was an emotional roller coaster. It definitely lives up to its title. Perry is quite the tortured soul and I thoroughly enjoyed his journey on finding himself and choosing his path in life. Such a great read. Also didn't know this was a series I followed along just fine and am excited to read the other ones!!
Tortured was my first encounter with that author - and certainly not the last one, since I really enjoyed that story! It all starts with a group of friends - but the whole story is told by the only two of them, Tess and Perry. And as a result of the series of unfortunate events, they are the only ones that are still alive. First we meet them as teenagers, but then we learn about their adult lifes as well. The story is not linear, as present events are mixed with reminescences of the past. We learn about characters and their journey through theirs thoughts and memories. That is a great way to deeplyunderstand characters , as well as the choices they make. Nothing is obvious here, you can't trust anything - characters that are portrayed as bad ones at first turn out to be good ones, while the ones you trusted were kind, turn out to have quite the past as well! Perry is a perfect example of how a character that first seems to be a black sheep - ex convict, had his share of making bad decisions - and yet, he proves to have aa heart on the right place. I definitely fallen for him a little while reading the story. You can't say the story of Tess and Perry is an obvious one either, as even though they felt a strong, undeniable connection to each other from the beginning.... both of them had a relationship with someone else at this time. But because we learn about the story from two perspectives, we get to eventually understand the decisions they made, even if they seemed odd at first - bit by bit, as the story unravels, it all makes perfect sense to the reader. The book is definitely worth a read. The author makes a strong statement, that even though we can love someone and want what's best for them - sometimes, it might cost us our own happiness. You can't expect to read about exciting events on each page of the story for sure, but don't be suprised how addictive the book is - once you start to learn more about the characters, it's hard to pull away. This is because of the author's style, as well as used techniques - like two mixed timelines, mentioned before. Tortured is a beautiful love story that shows that people who are destined for each other, will eventually find their way to be together against all odds - and even if the road is a bumpy one, it makes reaching the destination point even more special.
This book was like looking into the passengers eyes as their train crashed. Seeing every detail, knowing it’s going to happen, and having your heart jump out of your body to try and stop it.
I really wanted to dislike every person in this book, but I couldn’t. Every one of their flaws, made me want to have that knee jerk reaction of judging them and writing them off. From Sloan and Perry’s dysfunctional, toxic relationship; to Walker doing the wrong thing with good intentions. Even Tess, whose excessive patience, understanding and strength to keep going, had me wanting to shake her occasionally. And then give her a hug and shake everyone else for her. They drove me crazy, but I couldn’t help hoping they’d get it together because I wanted them to find happiness. Because despite all the exceedingly terrible decisions they made, they were only human, and life can be so damn twisted and complicated. Being able to know the right thing when you’re in that moment can be gut-wrenchingly difficult. No spoilers, but I cried. Twice. The angst and heartache of those things that can just blindside you and break your heart in life, meant that this was most definitely not a light read. But it never felt, truly corrupted and bad. Like even the darkest parts, weren’t evil, they just sucked like life can sometimes. And it wasn’t all dark parts. All the little moments were heartwarming. And Tess and Perry finally getting together was sweet.
It was well written and engrossing. So, if you’re looking for raw. Emotional. Flawed but good people. A pile of angst. And a happy ending. I heartily recommend this book. You know. Once my heart gets over the squishing cardio workout that was this story.
“It’s not about saying the right thing or pointing fingers as to who’s at fault—it’s about loyalty. Loyalty to those who mean the most to you and facing it together, even if it’s hard.”
⭐️⭐️⭐️💫/5
Thank you so much to bed and books and the author for sending me an ARC of this amazing yet heartbreaking book. They provided me this book in exchange for an honest review
This book was filled with so much heartbreak and sadness but it ended beautifully. There was a million different problems happening but the author was able to put everything into place. The story revolves around a group of friends and the challenges they face. Perry, comes back from prison to find his girlfriend engaged to another man, one of his best friend’s dead and a problem that he could very well lose his life for if he doesn’t resolve. The thing about this group of friends is that they may not always be able to solve their problem but they always have each other’s back and I think thats the beauty of this book. It shows how amazing it is to be able to have a person, if not a group of people, who will be there for you no matter how many mistakes you make. It wont matter if you did something really bad, they’ll be there to hit you on the head and tell you that you were stupid but ultimately help you fix it.
I would definitely recommend this to anyone who loves books that contain love triangles and bad boys that are rough around the edges but when you get close to them, they will do anything for you, even to the extent of giving their lives to protect your own.
If I could describe this book with two words, it would be raw and emotional. I usually like to start my reviews with a little summary, but I do not think I can find the words. • Tess and Perry's story is years in the making, years that you get to witness throughout the book. Lepley takes you on a rollercoaster ride with your heart as a passenger. You will cry, you will laugh, you might even occasionally want to slap some sense into some of the characters, but rest assured that this story won't leave you unscathed. Amid the angst-filled chapters, you will also discover some sweetness and love that will keep you coming back. This is not a book you start and put down. It won't let you. • 4/5 ~ #fridayinaprilbookreviews
This is a best friends to lovers romance which had me captivated from the moment I started reading. It is the fourth book in the series based on Perry and Tess who both suffer the loss of two important people in their lives. The book goes from present to past which keeps you wanting more.
These two have this bond that saddens you the moment they reunite after Perry goes to Tess’ tattoo shop. The raw emotion and love these two feel for each other is felt like you are watching them. This book is like an emotional roller coaster I didn’t know if I should laugh, cry, smile or fan myself. It is full of twists and turns and when things are answers you’re left in complete shock. I cannot wait to read more by this author and I’d gladly read this book over and over again. I received this as an arc to give an honest opinion.
Love this series. So glad to see characters come back. Perry, Sloan and Tess what a triangle of love. Tess and Perry have an unrequited love. He protects and she loves him unconditionally even when they have other loves in there lives. With all the tragedy they find their love
This is the first time I am reading and reviewing Cole Lepley and and what one awesome author she is!
This story runs between two friends and what an emotional ride this was!! Way too many twists and turns. I don't usually read these kinda Romance but it was worth it.
I'm actually a little lost for words on how in love I am with this story, I loved every millisecond of the journey (even when it felt like my heart was being ripped out of my chest) 😅 From the moment I picked this book up, I couldn't bring myself to put it down, adult life be damned! The story was so captivating, with characters so dynamic and a plot with so much to offer, I was willingly handing myself over to the mercy of Cole's talent and I dont regret a second of it!!
Tortured had me feeling like a little kid on Christmas, I couldn't wait to unwrap the story and see what was inside but I also wanted to savour every second of the surprise. That internal battle was like the hunger games! 😅
I recommend Tortured to absolutely anyone and everyone because I am beyond confident that no matter your reading preferences, you will fall just as in love with Tortured as I have! 😍 Tortured will now be forever tattooed on my heart!
𝑻𝒐𝒓𝒕𝒖𝒓𝒆𝒅 is an emotional and touching reading. It is the story of Perry and Tess, two long time friends who have lived through some difficult and heartbreaking situations. Perry Michaels is a tortured man, he is a desinterest person who take care of his loved ones, always putting their welfare first. Unfortunately he has to deal with consequences of some bad decisions taken in past. Perry was outside his home paying for those mistakes. He has been in love with his on and off girlfriend for many years, although they’ve been in a toxic relationship but he expects everything would be fixed once he returns... Now Sloan, his “girlfriend”, is engaged with another man. Tess is a strong woman who is dealing with grief by her husband death, and now completely dedicated to her tattoo workshop. When Perry comes back, the shell that she was creating, fractured. Some secrets come out the light that Tess didn’t know and changed her perspective. There has always been mutual affection, as friends, but after several experiences lived together, and helping each other overcome their past creates confused feelings, strong feelings. The acceptance of those allowed them to find the right way toward a happy ending.
𝑻𝒐𝒓𝒕𝒖𝒓𝒆𝒅 is a realistic book that alternates past and present day of the main characters. Frantically I love the fierce and personality of Tess; and Perry’s gentleness, protectiveness and sense of responsibility. He’s a tortured soul, he’s a victim by actions of other persons, as well he was involved but he immediately regretted, trying to fix and be a better person. He suffered by the guilt and the loss of his best friends. Sloan wasn’t helpful at all, I have to say, I don’t like her character because of her lack of decision. I enjoyed the slow burn romance between Perry and Tess, it was so realistic and with sense. Tess giving him a reason to believe and in himself. The way they were the light at the end of tunnel to each other. I’m so glad with the development of the story. It is about overcome the past, learn from your mistakes, and hold on to people who love you unconditionally.
I gave this book 4.5 stars, I just discovered the author but definitely I want to read more of her books.
**I received an ARC in exchange of an honest review. All the opinions and thoughts written here are on my own.
This was a complicated story about life, loss and growing up. It was filed with angst and a slow burn love story. The book is told in dual pov and bounces back and forth between past to present.
Perry went to prison for 2 years although we aren't told why for quite some time. Two of his best friends have died and again we don't get the details for a while. When Perry is released from prison, he struggles with his past and wants to make amends to Tess. It was her brother and her husband who passed away. Although Tess doesn't blame Perry, he blames himself. Tess and Perry start to rebuild their friendship and in doing so, we learn the full story and watch Tess and Perry struggle with their feelings for each other.
Overall I enjoyed the story. There were a few times I felt like the story was being dragged out, especially in the first half and I felt like we, the readers should have gotten some of the answers sooner in the story, as having the answers sooner wouldn't have made the story any less interesting or given away anything. In fact, once I got the answers, that was when the story became more interesting to me. I know this book is fourth in a series, and I did not read the previous books, (new to me author) so maybe some of the answers were in previous books? I'm not sure.
*Spoilers* It was a really good read. It was a lot of now and then moments. Perry, Tess, Walker and Tess’s older brother Jeremy were a tight group of friends/family forever. There is also Sloan but she’s Perry’s on and off toxic girlfriend. They have the usual teen drama but then the guys get into some bad stuff that just causes them trouble after trouble. Jeremy is their first real lost and struggle. He died in a celebration gone wrong. Then Perry gets stabbed for their bad stuff and then goes to prison for awhile because he was protecting his sister. Walker died as well. A lot of the story is Tess and Perry finding their way. They have the tightest bond in the group and that bond keeps them standing. The story is good, it feels very real life if that makes any sense. It all sucks you in and keeps you turning pages. Tess and Perry are great, there is some steamy but not a whole bunch and it’s an HEA. The ending I feel could have been a little more but it was still good.

What a perfect name for this book! So this book... You have Tess, Jeremy, Walker and Perry..these 4 are thick as thieves until something happens..The boys make a dumb mistake and it all starts to fall apart.... So I like Perry but man does he have an obsession when it comes to Sloan..he can't tell that woman no even after 2 years of no contact. She's needy and annoying but I truly think there's more to her story then just how she acts. Tess is grief-stricken and trying to run a business. Her heart shattered by things she finds out but she doesn't let her stop from living. There's always been something between her and Perry but because of other people,it didn't happen. They were and are the best of friends. This book and the characters in it are truly tortured but a beautiful love story comes out of it.
This book is a rollercoaster ride. I'm still not sure how I feel about it. Tess, Jeremy, Walker and Perry are all really close best friends who grow up together. Tess and Jeremy are also siblings. All the boys get into some shady stuff and the consequences last a long time. Tragedy is at every turn and the hits keep coming. We go back and forth from past to present to see how everything is connected. I constantly wanted to scream at Perry. He made me so mad. He just kept going back to his toxic girlfriend Sloan. They loved each other but just couldn't let go even though they knew they should. There's so many twist and turns. I felt bad for all the characters especially tess. Only two are left standing after everything is said and done. It's a long emotional ride.
WOOWW! That’s the first word I said as soon as I was done reading! Tissue box please, my emotion are at an all time high right now. This isn’t your usual friends to lovers trope, it does have a HEA but you will go through so many heartbreaks to get there. Tess and Perry have been through so much in their life, they both lose the two people who mean the most to them. Their relationship has always been so strong and their feelings for one another we’re always kept in the back. Perry’s struggles with loving two people at once and it tears him apart because he just wants them both happy. I promise you won’t be disappointed with this read, although you will need to be prepared for all the crying you will do!!!
What an emotional ride! The characters grabbed my attention from page one. This story was an emotional journey between friends. Tess is the glue that holds everything together. Perry takes on every problem as through it is his own. Walker is stubborn and trying to get ahead. Jeremy is the voice of reason. Sloane comes in and out bringing the added drama. Together they survive loss and lost relationships. The book paints a very vivid and realistic picture. The book alternates between past and present chapters. That really gives the reader the whole complete story of what is going on and what the characters were thinking and feeling.
Friendship, loss, and new beginnings. Perry and Tess go through more in their young lives than most people go through their entire lives. Somehow they fight their way to an HEA. A complicated emotional roller coaster. Their story is realistic in a sense. Perry’s toxic relationship, his feelings of insecurities and guilt play a big role in his behavior good and bad. It took me a while to get into his character. Tess seems to be the stable one but she had her own demons. The story took a while to get going. A lot of slow drip of information but you need the full story to appreciate the characters.
Perry and his core group of friends, Tess, Walker and Jeremy, have an amazing bond. They get into some trouble but can always be there for each other. Jeremy is the first to leave the group and it's a shock and an accident. Tess is his sister and takes it the hardest. Perry has always loved Tess but never thought he was good enough. Tess has always loved Perry but never acted on the feeling. It just wasn't always right. As time went on they loved harder on each other, but is it a forever love or strong enough to be more than anything. You need to read this book. There's a lot that goes on and some heartbreaks and joys that you will want more.
What a wild ride, this book follows the two protagonists who have been in complicated relationships, one widowed and one engaged. They were a part of a beautiful friendship however prison changed the dynamics. I really enjoyed both protagonists and the fact that the book was written in both perspectives was great! I love how reliant both characters are on each other and even through tough times they always find their way back to each other. It definitely was a slow burner but the chemistry was obvious.
This was quite an intense story! There was so much anguish and heartbreak throughout this story, as well as the strong bonds of friendship and love. It was interesting to read how the relationship evolved between Perry and Tess as well as the relationships between Sloan and Perry, and Tess and Walker. The story line was so riveting, that I had to keep turning the pages t find out what would happen next, and what happened in the past. A definite must read!

Tortured by Cole Lepley. This is book 4 in the Cherry Grove Series. It can be read as standalone (this is what I done) and I don’t feel like I missed anything by jumping into book 4 vs. starting with book 1. To me, this cover speaks volumes as to the depth in the relationship of Perry and Tess- so much emotion, heat, and passion. I loved this couple. The story itself was unique and engaging but the characters are what really drew me in. I enjoyed this story and would recommend it to others. Wow there was a lot to this book. I want to start off by saying I have not read the previous books in the series and I definitely wish I would have before reading Tortured. In fact I’m going to read them all and then reread. That being said I was able to follow along with the story fine. The book is very well written, the story is great and the character are multi layered and complex, all the makings of a great read!
To be honest I did struggle to get into this book. The overall storyline was good, but I found it hard when the chapters kept jumping from the past to the present, it made it harder for me to enjoy it and this was very frustrating as the story had so much potential. I did like the characters though, especially Tess but the chemistry was lacking between characters. Sorry but this wasn't really for me.

This is the first story I have read by this author and I was not disappointed at all. In fact, I was pleasantly surprised. This is an emotional story about Perry and Tess. It might be the forth book in the "Cherry Grove" series but can be read as a stand alone read. I really like how the story developed and love the characters. A tortured soul on a journey of discovery and finding the path worth taking. I look forward to reading more from this writer.
Interesting fourth book in the Cherry Grove series. Tess is not only dealing with the loss of her brother, Jeremy and her lover Walker but also her best friend, Perry, who wound up in prison. Everything in her life has been flipped upside down. When Perry comes back into her life to fulfill his promise to Walker. To take care of her always. This book is intense, crazy, hot and soo sad. It seemed to lag abit for me but it was still a good read. 4/5
