The Edge of the Sword #1

A Crack in the Rock

Rate this book
A determined young woman carves a place for herself in her country's history and in the heart of its future king, but risks breaking her own.

Born the daughter of goatherds in the Granite Mountains of Berush, Sashia longs for greater challenge and adventure. Her active mind constantly gets her into trouble. Unable to stand by while others suffer, Sashia intervenes, often with unintended results. When an itinerant healer and his wife discover Sashia and offer her an apprenticeship, she jumps at the chance to sate her curiosity of the natural world and change her future.

Heir to the throne of Berush, Cyrus is strong, decisive, and a born leader. He longs for a wife who will share his vision for the country—a wife of his choosing, not his father's. Sashia catches his eye, but even a handsome prince finds capturing her heart a challenge.

Life is uncertain, and Sashia soon finds she cannot control every outcome. Used to relying on logic and her own resourcefulness, no amount of training can prepare her for the choices that lie ahead. She struggles to shape her destiny in a patriarchal society where polygamy is legal and women are subject to their fathers or a spouse.

As Berush is threatened by enemies from without and within, Sashia's creativity, stubbornness, and tenacity place her in a perfect position to both save lives and affect the course of the entire country. The consequences of her decisions will reverberate for generations. Slight of frame, but fierce in heart, Sashia will need every ounce of strength she possesses to live her dreams and win a future of love and happiness.

Ever since I was a little girl, I have loved to read. One of the first books I remember reading was a Wonder Book version of Cinderella. It was in the reading station in my kindergarten class, and I loved the illustrations. I would pick that book out every time, so my teacher finally removed it from the shelf to force me to expand my horizons. Now I have my own copy.

Another book that influenced me very early on was Richard Scarry’s Busy, Busy World. It told a story of two creative painters who painted a mural of a large sun inside someone’s house. I thought the idea was genius, so I drew a large sunshine on my wall with crayon. It was scrubbed off, but I continued to have a desire to express myself artistically.

In middle school, I enjoyed writing, and my English teacher told me I would write a book someday. I loved to read, sometimes reading late into the night. When I was not reading, I was making up stories in my head for my own amusement, but I never wrote them down. I was more interested in drawing and painting than writing. I have since painted numerous works of art, including some very large outdoor murals. You can see some of them if you do an internet search of Paint by Amber.

Over the years, I have had a lot of trouble with insomnia. I had heard that if you write down your ideas, it will help you to be able to go to sleep. That didn’t help, but I did end up writing some complete novels. Recently, I was diagnosed with narcolepsy, and understanding my sleep patterns, along with scheduling at least one nap during the day, has greatly improved my quality of life. The line between dreaming and wakefulness for me is sometimes blurred, and some of my ideas come straight from my dreams. Others are worked out while I’m lying in bed unable to sleep. It was fun to type them out, and I am planning to continue writing.

My goal as an author is to write the type of books that I would like to read. My favorite genre is fantasy fiction, and I read and write books that tackle difficult issues but resolve themselves into a happy ending. I hope you enjoy my stories and characters as much as I do.

Living in a largely patriarchal society, Sashia dreams of using her gifts of healing to help people all over the land. However, when she stands up for a prisoner to stop his execution, her bravery and bright spirit attract the attention of young prince Cyrus. In love, Cyrus begs Sashia to come with him to the kingdom’s capital and marry him. Sashia, on the other hand, isn’t sure about this. Does she love Cyrus? And what of her passion for healing? Even though most other girls would jump at the opportunity she has, Sashia doesn’t want to marry for anything less than love, and she isn’t sure she’s willing to give up her freedom, either.

The first half of the book was extremely satisfying… lots of action, adventure, and growth! The second half slowed down a bit so that the author could address the subject of polygamy (more on this later). The writing of A Crack in the Rock was both simple and engaging. The plot was also moving and always changing, and I often found myself wanting to read on to the next chapter to see what would happen next. Sashia was strong and independent without being annoying like some female MCs are. And Cyrus was the best! 🥺 Such an angel! And the intrigue! I loved the political tension, the plot to , and the plot twist at the end!

A Crack in the Rock is filled with everything from romance and adventure to mystery and intrigue. Not only that, but it gives readers a meaningful look into the past. Definitely recommended for fantasy lovers aged 13+.

Although Sashia’s world is fictional, it mirrors some of our world’s past cultures. The author wished to address polygamy and show readers how harmful it can be, so although it isn’t condoned, some characters in this story do engage in polygamy.

Content warnings: Bear in mind that this book might not be suitable for everyone. I didn’t find anything disturbing at all, but it may not be fit for some younger readers. Sashia is a healer, so there are some mildly graphic to moderately graphic descriptions of stab wounds, birthings, amputations, etc. Quite a few mild to moderate descriptions of birth are mentioned as well as polygamy, “water breaking,” wet nurses, breastfeeding, etc. One person is mauled by a mountain lion, and the injuries are mildly described. Another person commits suicide by jumping off of a balcony. Still another character makes the decision to kill a group of people, women and children included. This isn’t necessarily condoned. Mild to moderately graphic descriptions of battle are also present. Sometimes it’s said that one character is with another character in the bedroom, but nothing is described beyond kissing and deep feelings of attraction in this story.

Please note that I received a complimentary copy of this book from the author. All thoughts and opinions expressed are completely my own and I was not required to leave a positive review.

Objective rating: 4

This book is very well written. The prose in particular is strong and clear, and I really enjoyed the author's ability to write great prose. The plot is clear, and the mystery is maintained throughout the book very well.

Personal rating: 2.5

This book is, above all, Women's Fiction, something I am not and never have been comfortable reading. The focus on emotion and the physical "chemistry" of romance isn't something I prefer to read, and my definition of "too far" isn't the same as many others'. I also don't care for innuendo, and there were a few instances of that in this.

I found the discussion of polygamy interesting, but the way the characters handled it made me sad. That isn't a situation I would ever want to be in, nor would I wish it on anyone else.

Characters do not claim to follow Christianity or any Christian-reminiscent religion, so there are multiple discussions of the "follow your heart" nature.

There are a couple scenes with graphic gore and one graphic birth scene at the beginning of the book.

This book is for adult women (25+).

A journey

I was very excited to read this book because I had seen so much about it. There were a lot of interesting facets of the story with the Magi and the healer aspects. I liked Sashia's character and the different aspects of her character and the romance with her and Cyrus made my heart warm. I would have liked to see more happening between the time jumps, like Sashia's training to be a healer (and to learn more about the Magi) and some of the smaller, more domestic moments. Sometimes the pacing moved too quickly and I wanted to spend more time with certain scenes to really immerse myself in the world. Overall, it was a really nice book

First off, thank you so much to Amber for this gifted copy! I’d like to say that while this is technically the first book in her series, The Edge of the Sword series, this book does not need to be read in order to understand the rest of the series, but I really did enjoy it so keep that in mind!

I will admit, when I first started this book, I was skeptical because it had to do with polygamous relationships and how they were a part of this world’s culture. I have nothing against polygamy at all, but I was definitely concerned that I would be so angry and filled with jealous if my main couple ended up falling a part due to it. I was completely wrong. Amber did an amazing job is showing us a loving relationship between two people, and then adding in the addition person and how all parties learned to cope. I loved how strong all the characters were, especially Sashia, who looked beyond herself and her relationship and thought of her country. She was a healer through and through.

While this book does address romance and the concept of legal polygamy, it also has a suspenseful plot that I felt was interesting and compelling. I do wish we had more insight into that plot throughout the book, but I was content when everything came together at the end.

I’d also like to say this is a clean book, in terms of sex. There are allusions to what will happen but it is a fade to black moment, so this is suitable for mature children. Just remember that there is a lot of mention of battle wounds, amputations, and other graphic images.

I like to keep both a print and audio story going, and lately I have enjoyed listening to Peter Kenyon's audio rendition of Amber Gabriel's novel A Crack in the Rock.

A CRACK IN THE ROCK is set in the fictional kingdom of Berush, with cultures that reminded me of the medieval Middle East and western Asia. The novel reads like historical fiction: the characters and their struggles all seemed so real, I felt as if I was listening in on actual history!

A CRACK IN THE ROCK tells the story of Sashia, a teenage girl from a nomadic tribe who lives in the desert mountains of Berush. Sashia is both independent and loyal, and works hard to accomplish her goal of becoming a Magus, or healer. Her sharp wit, compassion and medical knowledge end up shaping the entire kingdom of Berush, and capturing the heart of its prince, Cyrus.

But this is not an easy happily ever after story. Over the course of the novel, Sashia faces all manner of physical, psychological and relational challenges. In the end, she discovers that happiness is much more than an emotional state: happiness is a choice that one can make, even under less than ideal circumstances.

Although the story spans a number of years, from the protagonist's girlhood to motherhood, the characters and their interpersonal relationships were strong enough to hold my interest throughout the book. The candid descriptions of wounds, birthing, nursing, etc. make this a novel best suited to young adult readers and up (although having been through many of these womanly experiences myself, I found the frankness rather refreshing).

A fascinating story. I look forward to reading the other novels in this series by Amber Gabriel!

Excellent writing, but torn about the plot

This author clearly has skill. This book is well written, and the cultural aspects create a whole world you fall right into the moment you start reading. The characters are interesting, and the different

relationships are nicely filled out. I am torn about the plot, however. I understand the society means polygamy would be common, and I appreciated the author diving headlong into describing how that type of relationship would work. I just couldn't stop feeling squeamish about it the whole time I was reading that part. I will say, kudos to the author for not shying away from a hard topic, but at the end of the day I was filled with sorrow at the reality for all three people involved. So, definitely like the author style and dedication, and she is clearly very talented, I just don't think I could read this again. It was too heartbreaking.

What to say here.
I picked up the book out of curiosity after following Amber Gabriel on Instagram some time ago. These holidays, I finally had a chance to read it.
Almost immediately I was drawn deep into the world and couldn’t put the book down except briefly until I finished it after midnight.
Sashia is an intensely likeable main character. Seeing her grow from a child to a strong, competent, but never irritating/self-important young woman was deeply satisfying. Her relationship with Cyrus was so beautiful, and the book was such an easy read. I cannot remember the last time I was so engaged in a story I was determined to stay up as long as it took to finish it.
With this one story Gabriel has hooked me and I’m eager to read more of her works. At time of writing, I’ve already started book two.
But, oh my goodness. Gabriel tells you straight up front the book deals with the issue of polygamy. But wow, my heart still aches with sorrow and loss and pain for what that means for the characters I grew to cherish so deeply so quickly. Gabriel has an incredible knack for getting readers to connect with the characters, and as a woman approaching her first anniversary with the man I love most, I can’t begin to imagine the struggle and sacrifice and pain the characters had to go through as that issue is explored.
So, it wasn’t exactly a happy ending. How could it be? That, precisely, is the point. Yet, it’s not hopeless, and Gabriel does a wonderful job of working it out as well as she does. The whole situation is simply heart-wrenchingly tragic. Again, it’s the point, and it’s done so well. But that doesn’t change the wistful thinking of what could have been for the characters I love.
I was so, so impressed by this book. Sashia’s growth in relationship with her mother was an unexpected joy I loved to see. The theme of mercy too was incredibly comforting, and Lang’s journey brought so much hope and warmth to the story as well. The worldbuilding was exquisite, realistic, and I fell for this beautiful, brutal land Gabriel has realised so well in this book.
I so loved and enjoyed this book. The way it had to end though was so hard and tragic I think it will be difficult to read again anytime soon.
It’s a top-quality book, and I absolutely loved it and admire Gabriel’s writing style, character development, and seamless blend of many different factors. I just wish our characters could have had a happier ending. But then, that wouldn’t be exploring the issue Gabriel set out to do.

A Crack in the Rock is the first book in The Edge of the Sword Series by Amber Gabriel.

This novel follows the main character Sashia from childhood, well into her adult life. As with real life, growing up never seems to take you where you want to go.

Sashia's story feels like that of a modern woman sent back to ancient times. She struggles to be respected as a healer and has to navigate a society that forces her husband to take a second wife.
The worst part is that the husband isn't even a jerk. He is perfect and totally in love with Sashia. Despite the characters making the best of a bad situation, I kept wishing that Sashia and Cyrus would find a way out of it.

It reminded me too much of how the old testament kings took multiple wives and ruined everything instead of just having one like God wanted. I did like the second wife as a person; she was a sweet character. But I still wish she had found her own love.

I listened to the Audiobook version and the narrator, Peter, did a fantastic job of voicing the characters, even the woman. His narration made the story easy to follow and kept me engaged even through some of the slower periods of Sashia's life.

I received a free advanced copy and this is my unbiased review. I loved this book and read it with in a few days with my daughter. The characters are deep, complex and you care deeply for each of them by the end of the book. The plot has twists you don't expect and difficult moral decisions that must be wrestled with and made. The setting and culture also play as characters to be discovered (akin to LoTR.) It is a brilliant start to a great series. Highly recommend!!

I received an advance copy and this is my unbiased opinion. The first thing I love about this is the level of character development and story continuity. I gained an insight into plural marriages as well as how postpartum issues affect women no matter their station in life. It is not a predictable story. It has twists and turns i didn't expect but found delightful. This book leaves me wanting more.

A story of curiosity, determination, ambition, independence, and how the choices we make impact our futures. As Sashia grows from a young independent, curious girl to a determined and ambitious adult, she has to make choices along the way that affect her future. The book was nothing like I expected with its richly developed main character and plot. One can't help but fall in love with the strong main character Gabriel developed and the richly developed culture in the world she created in this well-crafted work of fiction. Sashia encounters different crossroads as she embarks on her journey, and she must make choices that are often difficult. One of the choices is between love and her fear of losing her independence and life's ambitions to help others if she marries. The life lessons to take from the story are powerful. This is the first book I have read by this author, but I absolutely plan to stick with this series.

Wow! Gabriel has done it again. Excellent read! It’s a prequel to the the Warrior Prince of Berush and gives the story of Sashia and how such a strong and independent woman came to be in her “situation”. The story does have romance, but also has an intriguing and suspenseful plot. There are some twists and turns and plenty of adventure. If you like fantasy or romance that is clean and not explicit, I think you’ll like this book and the rest in this series.

Updated review May 2023- I read this a second time on my Kindle as a review of the characters and story. Personally, I love the experience in reading about stories that are relatable to life and offer insight to open the mind. This novel delivers that for me, as well as entertaining and enjoyable. My favorite quote from this book is, "...I am the one who decides weather I am happy or not. Some days are easier than others. Some days I may decide to be sad, and that's alright. Today I am determined to be happy, and so I shall be." The other favorite quote on happiness is, "Happiness is a choice, you can allow yourself to be mired down by circumstances, or you can focus on the things over which you have control." Love the main characters in this book- they all grow into empowerment of themselves and learn to make the best out of their lives regardless of circumstances.

Review on August 2021-A suspenseful, dramatic book with dynamic and intriguing relationships. I love the interwoven parts within the novel of human psychology, mindfulness, and self care. Thought provoking stances on polygamous relationships and equality. Strong female characters.

Story: solid but could have resolved sooner

This book ended up being okay. I almost put it down a few times, but I was curious how Sashia would use her healing skills.

I picked it up thinking it was a fantasy book. It read more like an alternate history, but there wasn’t any magic or magical creatures.

Sashia was an interesting shero, but her reactions and quick acceptance of some difficult things made her unrealistic.

This novel was a pleasant surprise. It's everything I looked for without success when I was a teenager, blending the YA vibes and intense romance feels with a steady and very well-thought-out "life story", rather than ending things at marriage or the "HEA". Because live doesn't end there. Happiness isn't "everything that comes after marriage". Relationships are difficult, and Gabriel really goes into complexities.

I was also surprised, and very much enjoyed, the blend this author has managed to put together, creating something unique and unlike any other novel. Although this is not fantasy, the style reminds me most of the low fantasy historic works of Guy Gavriel Kay combined with the political intrigue and focus on relationships I recognize from George R.R. Martin. As women's fiction goes, this was a very enjoyable read and I look forward to seeing more from this author.

I really appreciate how the author incorporated the main character's medical knowledge into the story and really looked at all aspects of the medical profession. I also enjoyed the cultural focus and the author's examination of polygamy and how multiple relationships within the same family can affect individuals and the family as a whole. The outcome in this particular story offered great insight in how such relationships could be managed in a wholesome and emotionally sound way.

If you're looking for something different, whether you enjoy fantasy, historical fiction, or women's fiction, I recommend you give this fascinating read a try.

In the well-crafted world of Berush, of tribes and kings, we encounter a uniquely intentional girl, Sashia, who gains her independence from her father and tribe through pursuing medical studies and through the only existing letter from the king freeing the bearer from his control. Good thing, because it prevents him from killing her!

After all, she won the heart of his son, Prince Cyrus.

This is a grand story of intrigue, betrayal, loyalty and passion, yet clean and heart-warming. I enjoyed it as much for the philosophical elements as for the characters and plot.

For example, consider one of Sashia’s musings: “Berush had no slaves, but being unable to make important decisions for yourself was a form of slavery.” And again, “In some way, everyone was connected, and everyone was responsible for everyone else, but to what degree? Everyone must make their own choices.”

And she seeks to be true to her spunky heart by confronting thieves, warriors and kings in truth, and by offering others the freedom of correcting their mistakes with new, honorable choices. She's a worthwhile heroine! I'm looking forward to hearing more of her story in future books.

At the heart of this story is the mindset expressed in Scripture in 1 Peter 4:8 (NASB), “Above all, keep fervent in your love for one another, because love covers a multitude of sins.”

I loved, loved, loved this book! Amber Gabriel made me angry with some of the characters. It takes a talented author to make me feel that strong of emotions about a character! I love how she sets up the conflicts within the story and then resolves the conflict. She does it in a difficult way, where it isn't a flimsy resolution where everything all of a sudden is perfect. She doesn't do that. It was beautiful how she showed that there can still be tension between the characters even after forgiveness. How she took the main character from a young girl who just wants to be a healer, to a young woman who has trained to be a healer and just wants to be a healer, but then other strange desires start popping up, to a middle aged woman who is faces the challenges that have come. Some of the challenges are from her choices and some she had no control over them. How the main character learns, grows, and changes through this story, is absolutely beautiful!

Embarking on a literary exploration, I stumbled upon A Crack in the Rock's audiobook. Despite being outside my usual genre, I was captivated from the outset. The masterful storytelling weaved suspense and action, immersing me in a thrilling journey. The allure of the opening paragraph pulled me deeper into the narrative, anticipating each twist. Pulse-pounding action scenes and well-developed characters kept me engaged throughout. Though unfamiliar territory, I cherished the unexpected connection to the characters and their triumphs. As the audiobook reached its climactic end, I was left both satisfied and yearning for more. I eagerly await the next chapter in Amber Gabriel's brilliant series. A literary adventure worth embarking upon!

This book might just be my favorite of the series! It brings the characters to life with beauty, wit, and charm. The plot thickens right from the start and I enjoyed how I felt right there with the characters. Now, I think, I need to reread the series to better understand all the trials and tribulations the characters endured. Amber Gabriel has a unique talent for making the characters come alive in this mysterious world she has created. I received a free copy of this book in exchange for my honest review. This book grabbed me from the first sentence and didn’t let go. The first third of the book was my favorite, as Sashia left her family to become a healer. I was captivated by her early adventures and travels. I love stories that go into details of a skill or craft, and this one delivered! The battle triage scenes and the unfolding romance kept me up late into the night!

I really enjoyed how this book touched on many topics that are relevant to us in the “real” world, like balancing our calling and our families, postpartum depression, and forgiving even when it’s hard.

I couldn’t put this story down. It’s well-paced and so thoughtfully written. I was impressed with the characters and the unflinching way that Gabriel dealt with issues like post-parted depression, happiness as a choice, and polygamy. It made my heart ache and my stomach turn because it was so very REAL. I was intrigued by the mystery, profoundly moved by Sashia’s turmoils, and impressed by her choices to rise above.

I received a free copy of this audiobook and was hooked. I was impressed by the readers ability to change voices so effortlessly. The writing is incredible. From the beginning your hooked into rooting for Sashia and her love for learning. She’s going to do big things and doesn’t mind getting her hands dirty to do so. She can be tough, but also very kind and vulnerable. I loved all the twists and turns. Looking forward to listening to another one of Gabriel’s books!

Great Read!

I listened to the audio version of this book Peter Kenyon did an outstanding job with the narration of the story. Sashia and Cyrus had a wonderful story but also had to deal with difficult situations. I enjoyed how their love continued to grow and get stronger throughout the book. This was a great story with adventure, suspense, and romance. Great job!

[ARC review]

It took me some time to get into the story fully. The first part felt a little slow to me and I'm not sure I was overly fond of the narrator. But both definitely grew on me.

Due to the themes of the story I would categorize this is an Adult historical fantasy (no magic or anything fantastical) despite the fact that it's clean enough for a younger audience.

My favourites:
- The (Christian?) morals interwoven during the story. Themes like justice, forgiveness, charity, choosing what to make of your life all played an important role, which I liked.
- Adult, but clean subjects. Although the story doesn't shy away from death, mental health issues, post-partum depression, romance or the ups and downs of giving birth and parenthood, it deals with these in a classic, tasteful manner.

Sexual content: none (there are references to marital intimacy etc. but nothing steamy happens on screen)
Crude language: none
Violence: moderate (there are executions and wars but they're not very detailed on screen. the author does, however, describe quite graphically the physical injuries and women's labour that the MC deals with)

Conclusion
If you like historical fantasy, and especially if you are a mother (since you'll recognize the MC's experiences later in her life) I can definitely recommend this for a nice relaxing 'read'. Despite the fact that I think a different narrator might have made it even better, I really genuinely enjoyed this book.
