My sexual abuse, for all its devastation and debilitating force, put me on a path of self-discovery and self-acceptance.
When the hateful words of his parents brought him to the edge of ending his life, Alexandru heard a voice that completely changed his existence. What happened next, leaving Romania to move to the Netherlands and later on, to Australia, was something he could have never anticipated.
It is difficult to know where my same-sex attraction began. Was it the moment Cezar raped me? Or did it start even before I drew my first breath?
Embarking on a journey to understand how to marry his sexuality to his faith, Alexandru thought that his identity lay in finding the right person to live with for the rest of his life.
Son of the Cornfield exposes a childhood formed by abuse, loneliness, and faith. Alexandru writes his story raw, bare, and in the most vulnerable way possible, hoping that it will inspire anyone who is on a journey of self-acceptance. This is the work of a man who has found his true identity.
Some are dealt a fortunate hand. From the start of the game, the holder knows they have the greatest chance at winning. Others are dealt more challenging hands, and they must draw from the deck of life again and again to generate a similar outcome. In the end, it is not about the cards that you are dealt. It is about how you play the game. In Son of the Cornfield, Alexandru Lupu shows you his whole hand.
In his memoir, Alexandru Lupu tears down his personal barriers, exposing his heart to a chaotic world in hopes of sharing his pain and love with those who are willing to read its scars. His vulnerability thrusts open the blinds that cover the crystal clear windows to his soul and allows warm light to shine through onto his enriching story; it then plants the seeds for a new world where love, acceptance, and understanding knows no cultural bounds. The turbulent events of his life often collide with his ceaseless faith. It is through that same faith that his bonds with those who are pleased and willing to reciprocate his love grow stronger, including the God that left His arms unremittingly outstretched through every moment of his growth into the man he is today. With a humble heart and poetic charm, Alexandru leaves his readers latched onto every word wondering where his adventures will take him next. While one may feel his story has evoked a storm that flattened the fields of their soul, he—and He—lovingly extends a helping hand to retill the land of their own cornfield.
This memoir is honest and compelling. He weaves his amazing life-story in a way that takes the reader, visually and emotionally, into his inner world. A powerful, inspiring read.
Let‘s get two things out of the way: You have to read this book (in full)! And, I have met the author while he lived in the Netherlands. No bias, he just happens to be both an interesting person and a good author. Any well-told story that takes you from Romania via the Netherlands to Australia is bound to be ’quite a story‘, but to learn of the depth of the emotional and spiritual struggle below that is definitely worth the read. What I think is fantastic about this story is the fact that it gives this personal and original perspective on the mix of religion and sexuality. Sexuality here is shorthand for same-sex attraction/love, but the book tells a bigger story: finding a credible and compelling way for two realities to co-exist rather than to be mutually exclusive. Finally, the author has a truly poetic flair. It makes for the right length in a pleasant style and smooth reading.
Fantastic read! I really loved this book, it is a page-Turner, honest, powerful, moving, and inspiring. The style of writing and the poems are so beautiful. Some passages brought tears to my eyes. I highly recommend.
