The Way of Dan #1

Burning Down Boise

Rate this book
Sometimes the story of an apocalypse isn’t one of tragedy, but one of opportunity...

Dan Slaughter has given up on appearances. With his wife dead and his kids grown, he’s slowly reverting back to the east Tennessee boy he used to be three decades earlier. He quit cutting his hair and started smoking pot. He drinks when he wants to and sings along with the classic songs of his lost youth.

When his childhood friend Carl dies suddenly, Dan agrees to help Carl’s mother with the estate, even when it means traveling across the country to Boise, Idaho. Worse yet, Dan has to fly and that’s no easy task for a paranoid hillbilly not used to following rules.

Once he arrives in Boise, it doesn’t take long for Dan to figure out that there’s a lot more to his friend’s death than he’d been led to believe. He begins to suspect the overdose was actually murder and he can’t let it rest.

Only days after arriving, a mysterious solar event traps Dan in the city, leaving him with no prospect of returning home anytime soon. Rather than panicking, Dan readily accepts the new state of things. For him, the apocalypse is an opportunity. With no law enforcement, his plan to deliver a dose of Tennessee justice in downtown Boise just got a whole lot easier.

Long hair freaky people

I really enjoyed this book. It was real. A regular guy. No super prepper who knows all, does all ...not a Superman.

Going to share a conversation I read:
Detective Turner shook her head slowly, as if she couldn’t believe what Dan was telling her. “Where’s the body?” Dan shrugged. “I planted him in the garden out back. Hopefully it won’t grow into more assholes.”
I have to say, it the strange and obscure parts of a book that makes you remember the story. Being a gardener, I won't forget that quote.

Fellow readers, this series looks like it will be a fun ride with a bike and a recycling cart. I hope you enjoy it as much as I....

Oh the pain!

I knew I should not have read this book because I knew the rest of the series wasn’t written. Now I have to mark the days waiting for book two. Please hurry Mr. Horton.

In a societal collapse unrelated to The Borrowed World, Dan is a character in his own series. There is no crossover with The Borrowed World like there was for The Mad Mick and Locker Nine. The character of Dan feels similar to Ty Stone from Hard Trauma. Carl reminded me quite a bit of Lloyd, but his presence in the story was short-lived. Overall, this was a refreshing read of an original by Franklin Horton. While I felt it ended abruptly, and there were several unrealistic situations, I still quite enjoyed the read and look forward to continuing this series.

I was very impressed with this novel, having never read Franklin Horton before. I had toyed with the idea of buying The Mick and few times, and now I definitely will. This is a great novel, that comes close to a five star rating and only falls short due to a lack of a complete, cohesive ending. The story was very well developed, as were the characters. The first chapter or two is about Carl, and I thought he was the main protagonist given how well developed he was in the short time that we got to know Carl. This is a book about loyalty and justice and relationships, and the end of the world aspect is a trivial part of the story, almost insignificant. This is more about friendship and the end of the world just happens to facilitate doing honor for a fallen friend. I very much look forward to the next book when the end of the world will likely play a more significant part, and we have all of the background from this book to understand the character of Dan.

Another winner from Franklin Horton!

Franklin has a talent for creating characters in whom the reader becomes totally invested by the time they finish the book. Dan Slaughter is no exception - a cubicle-dwelling family man who finds himself in a completely unexpected situation and refuses to let it defeat him. Dan is not the prepper or mercenary of Franklin’s other series, but an ordinary man of honor who always follows through, in this case fulfilling the title of the book. Whether it is The Way of Dan or his other series, I anxiously await the next installment!

Wow, wow, wow! The heart pounding action in this book was so captivating that I read it all the evening that I bought it! Loved it. Once again Norton creates a book that will suck you in in the first paragraph. Don't miss out you need to buy this book of you are a fan.

Yuck !!!

I only got thru a few chapters before I realized the extent of filthy profanity in this search. I should have searched before reading.
I will no read books by authors who use such filthy language.
There is absolutely no need for this. It only shows lack of morality and imagination in the author.
I will not select another book written by Mr. Franklin Horton......

I’m not good at reviews. I don’t have time and I don’t like to expose myself to criticism. In reading books, I remember bad things more easily, when I don’t take notes, and the good ones are just, “Oh, man! Really good!” I think I’m being too harsh on this book. I really liked it, except for the last third, or quarter. Thank God there was no sex at all. I can’t stand it when I’m reading along and they go all OUTLANDER!

I think the prepper stuff is getting to be my guilty pleasure. Being a conservative has gotten so unforgivable, that you can’t admit it anymore. Anyway, I just had some problems with this first book of the series.

He is a flawed hero, but he starts out better than he ends up. The book begins well, very well, but then half way through we find that he has issues with accepting full responsibility for actions he took at 17 and their aftermath. That really upset me. He’s still making excuses. His police officer friend gives him a pass 30+ years later, but I don’t, and I don’t like the idea of these two going through the series, probably forming some group, with them being the main leaders. I guess a probable theme would be him continuing to work on his problem?

Also, after reading a few pamphlets, he’s an authority enough to know that the power is not coming back on for a really long time, but has no interest in seeking out and protecting the types of assets (contacts, books), that will give him old-world/new world advice, or at least one technician/scientist who can actually fix electronic things that only have a bad whatchamajiggy and connect them to that other thing. Like the devices that were turned OFF and disconnected at the time of the pulse? He just starts the killing and burning, and making plans to run off afterwards. Sort of a selfish person! Well, maybe he’s that important asset. Oh, and he takes the word of one person (who has a carrier pigeon) that the country is at war and it’s, “...one-two-three, all about me (and maybe, her)!” I would have liked him to be a little more helpful to some people, since he should be feeling worse that he can’t do anything to help Chuck’s mother, or his kids, and their friends. Oh, book 2, after they’re raped and starved, he’ll start caring about some other people. Issues!

All of the other books have the survivors fighting over opioids, with the smart ones collecting medical supplies. He better not have more kids with that woman. They’re constantly sick! Why doesn’t he take the tires off the new van and put them on the old van, or find an old motorcycle? I guess he will do that in the next book and they’re not really that far from Boise. He’s an Eagle Scout, but not a veteran? I’d like to know his reasons for not joining the military, or thinking about joining (if he didn’t). Does he read a lot of prepper fiction, or need any reference books? Well, he knows how to make an oven and about baking, but how about finding some laying hens, some books on native seeds, nuts, and grasses, etc. Oh, in the next book, when they have scurvy.

Then the vendetta. I would have rather the story went somewhere else for awhile, like giving into the temptation of leaving with her... or heading to Tennessee... and then, then being forced to turn around by an attack of conscience, or because Benjamin does something to someone else whom he has befriended, a puppy...a child..., but doesn’t think well enough of to bring along, and so then he goes back and “finishes” things. And why does our hero shoot someone in the back? He’s smug and puffed up afterwards, walking home like he’s been baptized, indestructible, then going to SLEEP??!! which is more of part 2, of reason 2, why I felt he needed to be slapped down, which he is, but that would actually have been fine if he was also killed by the bad guy. Then, his son comes to Boise and is rescued from a similar fate, by the police lady, and he and his sister go up with Holly to the (love) shack in the woods. Xxx, yes... that sounds better! The son comes back and avenges his father... Nope, I forgot, Dan ruined Chuck’s life, so he has to handle it. That’s the theme, BESTIES.

Then, there’s the feeling that he’s more of an adult in the beginning. We hear constant advice and instructions throughout, but the guy somehow seems more immature (at least in his decisions), by the end. Maybe, he’ll be the right age for her by the time they get to her ex’s house? In the effort to create a strong female character, he’s got to become weaker? It doesn’t quite work for me. I don’t care if he’s hurt!

This postapocalyptic tale adds a twist - a murder, and a best friend out for rvenge.
Dan cannot believe the police, that his lifelong best friend, Carl, overdosed on drugs. At the request of Carl's mother, he leaves his home in Tennessee to settle Carl's estate in Boise. Shocked, grieving, and not believing the story, he heads to Idaho with the goal of settling his best friend's affairs.
But what he discovers there leads him into a mystery, and to actions he never imagined he could take.
Oh, and in the midst of that, there's and EMP which shuts down the world too. That might not be such a bad thing, considering the way things are going for Dan.
I found this one to be fast-paced, the hero relatable, and the start of a series I am very much looking forward to continuing.
On a personal note, I lost one of my best friends a month ago, and the characterization of unexpected grief and loss hit me so hard. The thoughts the feelings, the physical sensations, the observations of life around Dan as he lives in that private bubble of grief, was exactly where I am emotionally and mentally, and maybe that is what made me empathize so much with Dan.
Great series starter

I have liked books by this author in the past, so was interested in this series. Book One was more of a murder mystery, revenge for justice tale set in a circumstance of some inconvenience as a result of a CME (with a stealth EMP attack for good measure). I just don't remember that either a CME or EMP would knock out flashlights. There were some decent ideas on surviving, especially on the move, but that part was mostly submerged by Dan's vendetta. He acted like he had nothing to live for, even with two grown children back in Tennessee. Guy, there are older cars, horses, motorbikes, your legs to get you there. It was pretty obvious that he and Turner would end up connecting. This was still a decent enough book and there is some potential that surviving the disaster, rather than the gangster, may actually come up in the next book, so I will likely continue.

I've read Locker Nine, Mad Mick, and Borrowed World...Then decided "Why the heck not? I want to check out The Way of Dan."
I was not disappointed.
As a change of pace from his other novels, Dan is not a prepper with all the skills. He is not surrounded by community when the world goes to shit. He's stuck in Boise, Idaho...far from home in Tennessee. Why is he in Idaho? His childhood best friend, Carl, died, and Dad told his mother that he'd go, clean out the house, and bring back some things for her.
Little did he know he'd end up getting stuck there, solving the riddle of Carl's death, and becoming a bit of a vigilante.
It's not a 5-Star review because I didn't exactly LOVE it; I wasn't itching to grab my Kindle to continue reading it like I have Horton's other books. But I did enjoy this one. Now I'm ready for the next!

Burning down Boise. Franklin Horton

Dan, just received some terrible news. His best friend had apparently overdosed on drugs. Carl's mother had called with the news and he volunteered to fly to Boise and handle his friends affairs. Dan quickly discovers upon his arrival from Tennessee things are not what they appeared to be. His best friend was murdered and Dan decides justice will be served. Shortly after he arrives a EMP occurs. People are speculating it's China or possibly Korea. No one really knows anything for sure, just rumors. He meets the handling detective and they quickly bond. She's originally from Tennessee. From this point on chaos reigns. Justice is served. An excellent read!

A different universe, but still Horton quality!

Burning Down Boise, Book 1 in the Way Of Dan series is the story of Dan, sent on a mission of revenge after discovering that his best friend had been murdered while trying to handle his friend's affairs for his mother. The mission just so happens to coincide with a grid down scenario no-one is entirely certain the cause of, natural of man made. Dan hatches an audacious plan to take down the man who killed his friend. The writing is good in every possible way. Excellent, multidimensional characters, an engaging plot and perfect pacing makes for a highly enjoyable read, especially for apocalyptic survival fiction fans, but anyone with a taste in perfectly constructed thrillers will greatly enjoy the book as well! 5/5 stars!

A Fun Read

This was a fun read, perhaps a good beach book for the male half of the species. (The ladies may like it as well.) You will enjoy the book more if you don’t think too much about Dan’s total lack of good judgment. Any bad decision is dismissed as that of a “good old Tennessee boy.” I sound negative but don’t mean to. It’s a fun, albeit violent book, with a good sprinkling of humor. If you are looking for intellectual depth, pass it by. If you are looking light exciting (and humorous) fiction, read the book(s).

Pretty decent story here about a guy bent on avenging the murder of his best friend. Obviously part 1 of a series, the main focus is on Dan Slaughter....mobile home logistician from East Tennessee...and his quest to get revenge on some bad guys. In the background of this, is a looming solar storm that few are taking seriously. Things come to a head when the solar storm hits like an EMP (because the North Koreans actually EMP'd us) and Dan goes hunting for scumbags. I'm looking forward to part 2. Lots of action, very easy read.

Best yet

I've read all of Franklin Horton's books and this is my favorite so far. Most post apocalyptic novels focus mainly on the apocalyptic event itself and the human drama is just filler. Not so with this one. The human story here is forefront and the "apocalypse" provides the backdrop. I hope this one is made into a movie if for no other reason, the soundtrack will be epic.

To quote the late great Charlie Daniels: Just leave this long haired country boy alone. Those who push him too far soon learn what southern justice is all about.

This is a good story. It seems to get caught up in minutiae at times, but it is so well written that the next thing I know I'm 50 pages further in and still flipping pages as fast as I can read them. Good characters, decent action, and a little slow in the pacing.

Book one

Mistakes: I didn't find anything wrong with this book.

Plot: An older hillbilly goes on a trip to Idaho after the death of his best friend. While there an EMP event shuts everything down and he decides to serve up some justice for his murdered friend.

Characters: I liked that this was an older character. Talking mid fifties. His actions seemed believable and realistic.

I liked it a lot. I feel like Dan is a guy I hung out with in high school. I was, at times, poor enough to drink Black Label beer while hanging out at the lake. I listened to the same songs and had some of the same characters as friends and "archememies". I have a "Carl". Thankfully, I am still in touch with her and will be until one of us passes. I really identified with this character. I am already starting the next in the series. I am all about "The Way of Dan!"

This book didn't catch my interest initially but as the tome progressed it became mo' better. I like the F. Horton books that I've read, his writing output is prodigious. That's great! But I repeat myself.
The protagonist in this book is about my age... OK, 15 20 years younger than me but I imagine myself the same age as the protagonist and his circle of friends. Reading the story feels... right there in my neck of the woods.
Read it!
Cheers!

Another great story from Mr. Horton!

I wasn't sure what to expect from this book when I saw the release announcement, but I am once again impressed with Mr. Horton's imagination, and skillful story telling. I finished it in two days only because I'm old, and had to sleep for a few hours between chapters.

I've always got high expectations for Franklin's books and he never disappoints. The way of Dan is a great start to another fantastic set of books. Keep up the good work brother. What you do makes a big difference in this messed up crazy world. It not only occupies our minds but gives us knowledge and hope. Thanks for what you do

Not what I was expecting

I read a brief synopsis of this book and expected a post apocalyptic action adventure. This instead was a very slow burning story about the main character, not much action at all. It was a little too slow for me and not enough happened to keep my interest. I did not really care for Dan so that didn't help.

Very entertaining

Imagine one day you receive a call from the mother of your childhood friend informing you that your friend was dead. She needs your help. She is simply too old to travel thousands of miles to close the home her child lived in. Could he help?
So begins the adventure of Dan. A what an adventure it it when all power goes out.

Way to Go Dan!

This is a great start to a series! Really good story, even though it starts off with tragedy… Dan meeting Holly was pivotal and I was glad to see it happening in my minds eye before it materialized on the pages. Can’t wait to start Book 2. Franklin did not disappoint! I kept thinking of The Mad Mick as I was reading.

Post apocalyptic adventure book based in Boise?! Well that's what drew me in, unfortunately it was less post apocalyptical and more about one character that sets out to seek revenge upon the guy that killed his best friend. The fact the world was ending as they knew it, was a tiny little side note. I trudged through and it picked up for 5 minutes in the last 25 minutes.
