2020 marks the 100 th anniversary of the 19 th Amendment. While some things have changed, others haven't. This book tells the story of American Methodist women's efforts fight for women's rights, beginning with the Women's Christian Temperance Union and ending with the #MeToo movement. Each chapter documents particular Methodist women and provides the reader with a basic historic context of the time or situation at hand as it shows how Methodist women engaged and fought for women's equality or women's rights in American society and American Methodism. The faith of these Methodist women emboldened them to reach beyond their social confines to find political avenues of social justice. As women engaged in mission, they sought to not simply fix social ills but to prevent them from happening again. They addressed the causes of oppression; and by stepping out of their place, made a place for others.
Very powerful and clear about the fights that American Methodists have been a part of regarding women's rights in the church and outside the church as well. It hurt my heart in several places and when I read the chapter on abortion rights, I was overwhelmed with grief as I realized the damage that was done when the Supreme Court overturned Roe vs Wade. However, #NEVERTHELESS we preach!
This books walks the reader through the struggles women have endured (and continue to endure) and the activism of the United Methodist Church to rectify these wrongs. It addresses earning the right to vote, abortion rights, the Equal Employment Amendment, and sexual harassment.
This book is 127 pages of information about women and women's groups that have been involved in the fight for equality and women's rights. A powerful book with a lot of information!
