My first Doctor Who Big Finish audio drama. Avoided them for so long because of the fear of being unable to concentrate on them, so I'm preparing myself for the "Time Lord Victorious" stories being released in a few months. They are relaxing before bed.
This was a simple, yet fun, Ten X Rose storyline. Gives me the vibes of the second series of NuWho, very much makes me feel 11 years old again. And you can never have too much Jackie Tyler, she does make me laugh, pleased she was included. Rose is very strong-willed in this story, she will always be one of my favourite Who companions and it is a joy to hear David and Billie acting together again.
It's a story that includes Jackie Tyler and Rose's friend. I think that Rose is amazing in this story. She and the Doctor spilt up to save the day. So good to hear David Tennant and Billie Pipper together again.
The premise of this audio was funny, a staged alien invasion for a television program called “Take Me To Your Leader”? Hilarious. Again, Jackie gets amazing character development, and her dialogues are really funny. There’s also this bit where she calls Rose and goes to voicemail and then she appears with the Doctor because they’ve been hiding, waiting for her to make the call, because, well, time machine.
There’s this character, a friend of Jackie’s, and she’s an asshole. But thanks to her you can also see why Jackie has the type of personality she has, and you can notice better how much she has changed from the first time you saw her.
Also, the familiarity the Doctor and Rose have is amazingly translated in the conversations they have. You can also see how much fun they have saving the world and having their little adventures, for them it’s really just the bits in between. The quips the Doctor makes about Jackie and vice versa also give this air of mother-in-law/son-in-law relationship that’s just priceless.
The last comment made by the Doctor is so meta, I loved it.
So much fun to go back to this point in the series. Ten and Rose together are always fun, but I really enjoyed Rose here. She was quick on her feet and she wasn't about to let anyone be bullied. Loved the inclusion of Jackie, too!
I so love that big finish has carried on some of the doctors stories in this format as it really is just brilliant! Like little epic stories, acted, performed and read by members of the cast and they’re so great to listen to.
I really loved this one and…Jackie! Need I say more. I love that she was involved in this one and the 10th doctor and Rose are amongst some of my favourites. So nostalgic and brilliant. Really couldn’t recommend these enough!
The plot was great and really funny at points. All the energy, fun and sparkle as the main show! Can’t wait to listen to more.
For the second collection of Tenth Doctor Adventures, we're back to the pairing of Ten and Rose, with Billie Piper making her Big Finish debut. Rose is perhaps not as distinctive a companion as Donna in the previous set of 10DAs, but her appearance provides a feeling of nostalgia nonetheless, and, at least in this release, it's enlivened by the re-appearance of Jackie Tyler as well.
This a light and fun story, not quite a full-on comedy, but with a number of elements that move it in that direction. A race of pig-like aliens start their invasion of Earth by landing in Norwich... and that's just the first of a number of hints that something isn't quite right about this particular alien attack. The result is rather meta, a spoof of Doctor Who itself, but also offering a more serious commentary on the nature of fame.
As usual, Camile Coduri comes out rather well here and is given almost as much to do as the Doctor and Rose, her faith in the latter serving as a counterpoint to the attitude of another character towards her own teenage daughter. Rose is slightly overshadowed as a result, but has plenty of agency and plays a key role in the resolution. Split between three viewpoints - the characters are separated for much of the story - things fit perfectly into the one-hour run-time enhancing the resemblance to the modern series. It also clearly fits into its ostensible placing in series 2, with a throwaway Torchwood reference and a quirky tone that's reminiscent of, say, The Christmas Invasion or Love and Monsters.
A fantastic adventure with the Tenth Doctor, Rose, and Jackie. Rose haters should give this one a listen; it is a perfect example of why Rose was a great companion.
Trying to get out of my slump by listening to some lighter-hearted audios. Glad I relistened to this a second time, especially after rewatching Series 2 recently so it was right on point with series 2 and Torchwood feels.
Just nice to hear Ten, Rose and Jackie as characters again and Rose telling Jesse she was important is such growth and loved her telling Marge to bog off.
This story takes us right back to 2006 and Series 2 of Doctor Whi, with Jackie and Rose Tyler returning alongside the Tenth Doctor for an Earth Invasion storyline. The story enters the invasion territory right from the start. The first half is a bit sluggish, with the character texting and calling each other back and forth and the Zaross just repeating the same lines over and over. The script takes a bizarre and somewhat unexpected twist halfway through. I don't know what I feel about the invasion being part of a TV show. This is a clear commentary in violence made into entertainment, and the final twist is pretty good. The only problem is that things just don't feel like there's any real danger anywhere. The alien characters remain pretty ambitious and aren't very interesting at all. Jackie is the only character given some great lines.
David Tennant feels off here, particularly when comparing him to his spot-on performance in Volume One. Billie Piper and Camille Coduri slip back into their parts very well.
The Tenth Doctor is in his early days and he isn't as fierce as when he travels with Donna. He's pretty laid-back and doesn't have his quirky qualities either.
Rose is pretty spot-on but doesn't do much of use. Jackie gets better moments here, actually, which is pretty cool.
The Zaross initially come across as annoying and co patently repeating themselves. When we realize what they are they turn pretty dull, even if they're motives are original.
The directing works well, with the soundscapes depicting the invasion pretty well. Music is okay, but nothing special.
The place is slower than an average Tennant era episode, mostly because of the invasion feeling dull and the plot proceeding pretty slowly.
The atmosphere and setting are set by constant references to mid-2000s pop culture. It gets a bit too obvious by the end. The tension is pretty light and the action is slow. This feels more like a Classic Series story than something from the revival. I'm not sure whether this story is supposed to be a comedy or something to be taken seriously, but it doesn't work very well either way.
This distant carry much weight in terms of continuity, even though a Torchwood mention kind if makes it naturally fit within the Series 2 arc.
A good idea on paper kind of struggles in finished format, making this the worst Tenth Doctor audio so far. It doesn't need to be replayed.
RANDOM OBSERVATIONS:
"It's not fake, it scripted reality" is such a great line to explain what the Zaross are doing.
This story depicts reality TV and violence in similar ways as the Sixth Doctor serial Vengeance in Varos (1985) and the 2005 episode Bad Wolf.
This is my first Big Finish audio and I was not disappointed one bit! Doctor Who is, for the most part, really great about hitting just the right note when they have a plot that takes a turn into the silly or inane, and John Dorney managed it with style! I loved the story!
I was also thrilled to get to hear David Tennant, Billie Piper, and Camille Coduri return to play their characters again! All three of them played off each other wonderfully, just like in the old days! Jackie's part in the story was great and had me grinning from ear-to-ear. Of course Jackie would land in the thick of it - Rose had to get her jeopardy-friendly ways from somewhere, after all!
A great introduction to the Big Finish audios! I've got a few more lined up to listen to and I can't wait!
Good show overall, however, weak on the philosophy and the transcendent as usual. Rose’s attempt to explain the importance of life for instance left me cold. Life is indeed important but more than for the material reasons implied (and that is stretching it far and giving this show plenty of benefit). Life is important because God has given it. Individuals are important because we have value first and foremost because of His passionate love of us. All other explanations fall short of this blessed reality.
Ugh I couldn't get through this one (3/10). Not horrible or offensive, just extremely bland. The opening failed to hook my attention and the first act is bit a bore. I feel this one fails to add anything unique to the "aliens invade earth" trope, at least from what I listened. From what I can see from the reviews it does pick up around the midpoint. I will revisit and perhaps revise my rating if the twist captures my attention.
Me gustó mucho, honestamente. Fue muy lindo volver atrás en el tiempo y escuchar al Doctor con Rose como si nada hubiese pasado, los adoré. No fui demasiado fan de la historia, pero aún así la disfrute!
Delightful. I love Rose and the Doctor together, they just work. And this story is not universal stakes but both Rose and the Doctor play exactly as they would in season two.
And Jackie Tyler!
I enjoyed this story from beginning to end and it made me miss Rose in the Tardis.
Another decent adventure will all round great performances (especially David Tennant as always). I did think the story would have worked well for Colin Baker's Doctor too.
This one was hilarious! Lots of noise though, so I sometimes had a problem hearing the dialogue. But it was very funny and listening to Rose and Jacky again was a treat.
