A RARE AND TOUCHING LOVE STORY
“The trouble with wanting something you know you can’t have. Because even if we could make it real … eventually … the relationship would sour, grow cold … and I’d be left behind to pick up the pieces.” ~~ Ruby Rae Roberts
This feel-good romance was a breath of fresh air – a short vacay fling that turns into a beautiful and insightful exploration of real love between the last two people imaginable. The meet-cute of strangers on a plane is one of my jams, and the tender romance that transpired touched me personally. It was sweet ~~ consuming ~~ gentle ~~ and perfectly orchestrated. They “get” and nurture each other so credibly. The gentleness was ALMOST boring and made me consider DNFing, but couldn’t bring myself to do so. I NEEDED to know how the romance played out to the very end, and am so glad I did – although this type of slow-moving, perfect romance doesn’t typically rock my boat. It was more like a rare treat that was read on a whim, but touched my soul with a sweetly meaningful and profound affirmation of true love.
“A man kind of man … this beautiful man I’ve just met on my very first plane ride”
Massage therapist RUBY RAE ROBERTS (24 has been abandoned by men all her life, starting with her estranged father. It’s left her scarred such that she never wants to be a burden or inconvenience to anyone. Bubbling with life, kindness and happiness, she’s a spirited, beautiful contradiction. Open to all that life offers despite her fears, yet always conscious of being a nuisance who might overstay her welcome. So lovable, and yet my heart broke for the incredible girl who never wants to impose, but has so much to give -- always with a smile on her face and making others feel comfortable. She never complains. Just a girl so profound and special that she can’t see it in her herself, while trying to navigate the unspoken feelings and reactions that happen in relationships.
Ruby wants closure with her dad and is on a secret cross-country trip to California to meet him and his family. She’s terrified, but hopeful, and winds up seatmates with fellow Bostonian Boyd Mitchell (29), a successful tech guy. Two mismatched souls. She’s an endearing chatterbox way outside her comfort zone and he’s a standoffish, self-proclaimed introvert with particular, controlling behaviors that keep most people at arm’s length. Ruby chatting him up on the plane makes his teeth grind until …
“her ridiculous laugh and silly ramblings and smile that makes [him] unable to do anything but smile back.”
He never believed in soul mates until she magically appeared in his life. They click DEEPLY. Complete opposites in every way, but perfect for each other.
It was kismet that they both wind up in the same resort lake town where Boyd’s family is a big deal and lives across the lake from Ruby’s dad. The reunion with her dad is not as expected, feeding Ruby's insecurities. The welcoming Mitchell family is there to pick up the slack and the story revolves around the evolution of romance while Ruby’s vacay takes a completely different turn with a surrogate family. There are lessons learned, truths she never knew, and the beauty of two souls truly exploring each other – especially how they transform each other and Boyd shows her in every way what true love and caring really mean, and that not every man in her life will abandon her. Every woman should swoon at their lovemaking and how Boyd handles her inability to have a big “O”. They are true game-changers for each other, and she loves he doesn’t play games (so did I), as they fast become the ports in each other’s storms.
“There are always storms, but love is about how you weather them together.”
Generally the story has a very slow roll, like gently lapping waves. That was okay until about 80% because they both clearly love each other and it was a beautiful bonding experience to witness. I got a bit antsy with so much embellishment of the Mitchell family (clearly this will be a series). Still, the ending was a foregone conclusion that felt anti-climactic even with added artificial drama that tears them apart before bringing them back together. While the ending very much fit Ruby’s personality and Boyd's grand gesture, the story was too low-key overall for me to give it 5 stars, but I enjoyed it immensely in many ways. It struck an emotional chord with me and made me believe in soul mates, too.
“I’m glad you came to me. You can always come to me” ~~ Boyd
