In its wake comes a new breed of ferocious, deadly abominations. One of which, barely more than a girl, seems to be going unnoticed
Over half the population has dropped dead. They litter every sidewalk, home and store. Instantly, explosively eradicated. All on the first anniversary of the discovery of alien life.
Five months into the apocalypse, Jorah Sinclair has done well surviving on her own, though she has grown desperately lonely. Secretive, guilt-ridden and manic, she worms her way into a fellow group of survivors. There, she meets charming, handsome and arrogant Riley; neurotic and grumpy Geoff; and the powerful yet aloof Sana Mangal. To them, Jorah appears weak and innocent; to her they are both salvation and ruin.
Within days of coming together, the group learns that the events that caused the end of the world may not be over. Battles of loyalty plague them while they search for some way to survive, but the clock is ticking.
Meanwhile, there is a darkness hidden inside Jorah that seems to be slowly leaking out.

This was probably the best apocalyptic novel I've read in several years. It is nothing like the other stories in the genre, in the best way possible.
Jorah Sinclair has been surviving, barely, for 5 months after "The Break", that can only be considered the end of world as we know it. There are monsters in the streets, Berserkers, and there are the survivors, the latter are few and far between.
Jorah has been watching several groups and she decides on one to join up with, Riley, Geoff and Sana.
Jorah is strong, loyal, helpful and sometimes a little scary.
The goal is to find out why survivors are "Breaking" and if it can be stopped. Or is it truly the end of humanity, and all they can do is wait until they all Break.. one by one?
I think this was really well done and I was emotionally invested in the characters. I was looking forward to picking this back up everytime I had to put it down.
Letendre kept me guessing and the reveal at the end was not expected at all, but was pieced together beautifully. I enjoyed the story immensely and appreciate the writing style, especially the choice to delve into character history as the story went on, instead of doing so at the beginning. It helped the story flow nicely I think.
This novel was truly wonderful and I didn't see any of the plot reveals coming. I guessed at some of them near the end, but second guessed myself. I would absolutely read this again and I'll be buying a hard copy as well to display in my personal library. I gave it 4 stars because I wanted a bit more to the ending and Jorah's story but otherwise, it was excellent.
I am greatly looking forward to more works from Letendre. I would absolutely recommend this to lovers of the apocalyptic genre.

This was a very good post-apocalyptic book. It did have one thing different, every fourteen days some people wold do what they called “break” and become freaks or berserkers. It starts out what the author calls a break, that those of us who read post—apocalyptic books when an EMP happens, there is no power, no phones or any computers that work and only cars built before they had computer chips in the would work and very few people had that type of vehicle.
First off we here from Jorah that she has been stalking a group with one female and three males. She finally buries what little provisions she has and goes to where they are staying to get some water. What she really wanted was companionship. To start with they don’t want to give her any water but she tells the she has some pain pills to trade for water. They agree. They then ask her to join their group., which she does. That night a bunch of freaks try attacking them and Jorah said that they need to go out the bathroom window and Jorah goes out last, so they feel she saved their lives. From this point on there are so many twists and turns, new people and not all of them are good. I started and finished this book in one day. If you like post-apocalyptic books you will love this one. There are characters you will love and characters you will hate and it is very action packed.
Rivers, Weak Men and Wolves follows the journey of Jorah Sinclair as she braves the world five months after the apocalypse. The life changing moment, referred to as ‘The Break’, killed half the population instantly while others turned psychotic. Think zombie apocalypse without the whole brain eating thing, and with your typical post apocalyptic novel, the “normal” people are left to band together and scavenge for food. Etc etc.
The book lost me about halfway through, the POV kept switching and got a little convoluted. I will say that I forced myself to finish this book, and that the ending was not what I expected— obviously we go into the book seeing how Jorah has a very loose grip on reality. I just wasn’t expecting THAT.
This was arguably the best apocalyptic story I’ve ever read. It was a substantial read at 440+ pages, but there was not a moment where I wasn’t engaged and enjoying the story and pacing.
The protagonist is compelling and the author does an incredible job of keeping the reader hooked using the mystery surrounding the reason for the apocalyptic world and the blooming darkness in the main character. It sometimes killed me not knowing why this was happening, and I gobbled up any tidbit of clue or information given by the author as the story went on.
The only thing holding this back from a 5 star rating was that the ending, unlike the first 80% of the book, felt rushed and sudden, and I was unsatisfied with the outcome. It genuinely felt out of sync with the entire story, despite being a valid conclusion and epilogue. I would have appreciated maybe one more chapter prior to the epilogue to better explain.
Beyond that, the supporting characters were well-written, the dialogue was clever and witty, and the general action and descriptions of this apocalyptic world were truly gritty and gruesome in the shocking way of The Walking Dead. People got hurt brutally, people died suddenly, and humans had become something different. It was jarring but thrilling to read something so gritty and what felt true-to-life, instead of the often romanticized versions and relative safety we get of zombie life. I enjoyed the constant sense of anxiety and worry that pervaded the characters’ every moment, and the high-stakes sense that brought with it.
An inspired first effort, and a great post-apocalyptic read
Hunter Letendre’s debut work is a very readable post-apocalyptic tale. 2/3 of the world’s population has vanished, and society is crumbling. What happened and how do those who are left survive? Then the “break” happens again and again. Can it be stopped?
Hunter weaves an inspired tale, with a strong heroine and several satisfying plot twists. Recommended for fans of apocalyptic fiction. I, for one, am hoping for a sequel.
I am in awe of this book and cannot believe it is a debut novel. There were so many surprises throughout that literally made me gasp out loud, I couldn’t help but keep reading until there were no pages left and still I want more! I will be looking forward to Letendre’s next novel with excitement and eagerness! Even if you don’t normally read this genre, I recommend this book to keep you entertained and on the edge of your seat!
This is not a genre that I would usually read but to my surprise I enjoyed it. The characters were interesting and the story grabbed my attention. I will be looking forward to more from Hunter Letendre.
