Royal Covens #1-3

The Vampire Curse: Royal Covens

Rate this book

Four sexy vampires. One feisty female. An ancient curse that'll test them all.

I might suck at casting spells, but activating a 1,000-year-old vampire curse is a pretty bad screw-up, even for me.
Oops.

Now I’m at the mercy of four stupidly-sexy vampires. With my initiation into the Royal Covens only three days away, I really don’t have time for this shit.

My vampires pose as my warlock mentors and promise to teach me how to hide what I really am: a reincarnation of some ancient and powerful witch. They want to get into the Royal Covens and reinstate me to my "rightful place," whatever that means.

I think they're just telling me that to get in my pants.

What my vampires don't hide is their hunger for me, both for my blood and my body. That dangerous kind of thrill is going to get me into serious trouble.

The Vampire Curse is a complete series of Royal Covens Books 1-3 where the main character does not have to choose between four vampires, or the new hotties introduced in books 2 and 3, and ends up with six guys. There are definitely steamy scenes, so if you don't like a little bite with your vampires you've been warned!

I went into this book very excited, the cover alone really drew me in. But once I got to the third book, it kinda lost me? The third book I thought would lead to this big epic battle but Sarina was defeated by like... nothing? Evelyn didn’t fight her? I was waiting for a big fight between them for Eve to show all her powers that she has. But didn’t really get any of that.

Then she has a best friend, Cassidy, but they rarely have scenes together and Eve kept forgetting her best friend was a prisoner?? I don’t know, if my best friend was trapped I’d be losing my mind.

And I didn’t really connect to all the men. The only ones I really liked were Quinn and Bast, and even then he didn’t get to be in his human form for not long at all.

I really wanted to love this story and I realize this book just wasn’t for me..

NEVER TRUST TIKTOK!

I finally gave in to a TikTok recommendation and it was a mistake. I DIDN’T EVEN FINISH THE BOOK! LET ME START HERE. SLAVERY? NOT OKAY IN ANY CONTEXT. ESPECIALLY WHEN ITS JUST THROWN IN THERE TO BE THERE.

The plot made no sense. I’m not sure if its because I lost interest really early on, but I couldn’t tell what time period this book was set in. Sometimes they used “proper english” sometimes the 1,000 year old vampires used the word “dude”. Evie had whole ass conversations with her cat and instead of us reading the interactions, She would just give us a summary of whatever that cat said (i.e: Sparks gave me a glare and told me that I would die if I didn’t have magic to keep me alive…) <— not a real quote.

At one point, one of her mates is telling her his secret about why he is the way he is and she somehow fills in the blanks without doing anything to get her to those conclusions. Like, he said something like ”If you found out what I did in the past, you’d never forgive me.” Then she just went, “You betrayed me and that’s why I died, because you wanted more power and that was the only way to get it so you had to lie to the others to get them on your side.” <—-again, not the real quote, but how did she get all that with no context clues? Give us some flashbacks or like have her get a headache to show us that she’s getting bits and pieces of her memories back. This happens so much through the first book in the box set, it’s infuriating. She’s also constantly saying she doesn’t remember anything from her past life, but she “feels” the memories.

The thing that bothers me the most though, is the inconsistency in her “weak magic”. At one point she needs to be given magic to survive and she goes on and on about not having magic because she’s mortal-born and not being able to control her magic and how her magic is so weak, then 50 pages later she knows how to use magic well and uses an advance spell. Then we’re right back to her not knowing how magic works, then back to her being an amazing witch, then back again. We see her train all of one time. She learns how to astral project and we don’t see her train again for a few hundred pages, yet she claims to be “a trained witch of the Royal Covens”. It’s so flippy floppy that it gets old pretty fast. She’s supposed to be this powerful Witch Queen, but it’s more like dumb luck that gets her out of sticky situations.

Her mates had too much going on, but they were all one dimensional characters. The fact that they were all warlocks/vampires/ something else supernatural? Too much. One of them was a warlock/vamp/wolf shifter. Why?
Why not make each of them their own supernatural creature and leave it at that? Besides Marcus taking her to the past to show her a small snippet, we never dive into the guys’ pasts again.

The books is supposed to be RH, but it seemed more like she chose one really early on. Like she starts off with Quinn and then it’s like a sudden 180 towards Marcus and then that’s all we get for like a good hundred pages. The reason given is because she can’t complete her bond with Quinn quite yet. There is a point early on in the book where she says that if she were to fully bond with Quinn something big would happen, then they finally bond and nothing happens.

So many plot lines were written into these books, yet there was mostly no pay off. Also, before she even fully bonds with the 4 main guys we were introduced to in the beginning, she bonds with 2 other guys. We never fully get to know any of the men she’s bonded too. There’s a part where she says she can’t bond with the remaining 2 from the original 4 because they’re strangers to her, but the first 2 that she’s bonded with are also strangers. She doesn’t make the effort to talk to them to get to know them, but she “feels inside her that she truly knows them better than they know each other”. The amount of times I rolled my eyes…

Anyway, these books were dumb and I DNF’d them . The part that made me want to read the box set in the first place (that was teased on tiktok) wasn’t even good. Don’t read this. It ain’t worth it.

I prefer a story with a story.

Theoretically, this should be a good book. Vampires, witches, sex, lust, love, danger, etc etc. But, the problem is that I couldn’t imagine or feel the emotion or the experience through the words written. In my view the author didn’t spend time building the fantasy world (or situation) and the feels that go with it. Like a palace without a foundation.

I don’t want guys to pop out of a 1,000 year curse to start bringing me food and rubbing my shoulders. I didn’t find that sexy.

Personally, I like a little bit more substance to the story. Even the s-short stories I indulge in (occasionally 😏) spend time building the fantasy beforehand.

Anyone can write, but not every book can make you feel.

Intriguing at first

The story was intriguing as first then as it went on the main character, Evelyn, got very Mary Sue-ish. There's A LOT of typos and places where a characters name was used incorrectly. I enjoyed the storyline but it's not a book I would read again.

The series has quite interesting concept and when you add magic and vampires I could not wait to see how the story evolves. The writing was good, everything was flowing quite smoothly, but for some reason I could not get into the story, the characters although lovely felt just slightly distant to me.
For the life of me I am not sure what went wrong there as it had all key ingredients for being an exceptional read, but for one reason or another I struggled a bit with it.

Boxset all 3 books in 1!

CAPTIVATED:
Evie is a mortal witch. She wasnt born one. She was taken in by her coven when she was a child. Things are a bit foggy about that but she's always just believed what her Aunt told her. A twist of fate and she's drawn into a vision and in order to get back and survive was to bond to the pillars aka the vey hot Warlock Vampires she was seeing in the vision. From there things get really interesting. Things arent what they seem and she needs training for her initiation into the coven where she'll receive her powers. Then she finds out she's a reincarnation of a very powerful witch. Whats the worse that can happen?

First book in a series is important. It sets the tone for the whole series. You have to have a good plot, characters, and the flow has to work. Thats how you draw your readers in. Its gotta go BOOM. That didnt happen for me in this book. I felt left behind on details and we were expected to know them. Book moved fairly quickly but the book needs more fleshing out. For instance, I wanted to know more about initiation and it was glossed over. I wanted to know the history of it and exactly whats going to happen. We didnt get that. I wanted more information on all the covens including hers. All we know about her is her real parents were killed when she was little but the details are hazy but we might get more information about that in later books. Evie was pretty accepting of her guardians and things progressed quickly with them. This wasnt a huge deal but worth mentioning.

I thought the bonding would be a tad slower. I sort of expected a little more shoving between Evie and her vampires but it was simple and easy. World building hardly existed here. I was confused by the dynamics in when people are born witches or mortals and how they define where they go into the world. Is this a supernatural world and humans are just part of it? Is it mortals and them? I know about Evie's situation but what about others? I'll definitely be reading the next book. This was good and it does keep me curious but its not without issues.

COMPELLED:
So, I had a few issues with the first book in the series. Book 2 was so much better! Everything is coming together and we are learning more. World building was better and more detailed. Getting new characters in this book as well. It just all around flowed better for me and I was sucked in from the first page. I love when that happens.

Well....this starts as book 1 left off. The aftermath of being imprisoned. Serina is one horrible person. However, its not just her they have to worry about its whoever is pulling her strings which we have no idea. After narrowly escaping from being killed they go to a vampire stronghold. Its safe for now. More interesting characters and I look forward to knowing more. Love just love him. He's funny, adorable, and sweet. After being with Evie a long time he's definitely in love with her and cares a great deal for her. She gains another bondmate but there are extenuating circumstances where he's concerned and his story broke my heart. Evie is so strong in a lot of ways but still very vulnerable. She gains an ally that was surprising. The stakes are higher and if they can just get through the trials and save her bff they will be better off. Its not over by a long-shot.

CONSUMED:
I actually feel bad about this negative review but I have to be honest. I liked the story idea of it all...it just didnt come together right.

Might contain a spoiler or 2.

In this book I am not sure what happened...there was definitely a lot happening in this book. It was all over the place. The whole Serina thing wasnt even finished. Not all the questions were answered. It wasnt very well thought out. I honestly think I had the most trouble with the last few chapters of the book. Basically at the part where she found Marcus. Not to mention her bonding to Tiros, Killian, and Aaron was rushed and forced. They had no time to develop anything of a relationship and that left me disappointed. Tying everything up was rushed at the end and I honestly thought as I got to the 85% mark that there was another book because I knew it couldnt be squeezed in but she did. Author jammed everything into the last 2 chapters and I just couldnt buy that. Then....we get a twist. Another Fate Witch tossed into the mix to save her remaining 2 bondmates?! Eh? We were told there wasn't any other Fate Witch's and how freaking rare Evie was. What the heck?! I think this had information overload. It should have been 4 books instead of 3. Definitely feeling whiplash. I loved the 2nd book and this one...ouch.

I'm glad I read the series but it did have a few issues but otherwise I enjoyed the story as a set.

This was all three books in one KU download.

The first book was better than the second, and the second was better than the third. I'm not entirely able to figure out why I feel that way. Something about the plot just seemed to get stranger as the books went on.

I also feel like the main plot never really got solved.

Sigh. 2.5 stars.

#1: CAPTIVATED

Could. Not. Put. This. Down.

From page 1 it gripped me, as Evie is a great character: strong, independent, self-aware, not gullible, doesn’t care what anyone thinks, good values … and a trouble magnet. Enter a bunch of hot vampires, conspiracy, power plays and a dangerous initiation and you get one wild ride.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

This book does have a cliffhanger, but it’s no biggie since the complete trilogy is available. I strongly suggest just buying or borrowing the complete set—you’ll understand as you get into it.

Captivated (Royal Covens Book 1)

#2: COMPELLED

Picks up right where Captivated left off, thankfully because it was a cliffhanger. Evie’s still trying to navigate the insanity she was thrown into, and re-bond with her mates so this book weaves life-altering action and kindle-melting heat, all while giving us a really fun look at Sonya in her role as Queen of Hell (See: Seven Sins). Reading this, I couldn’t help but marvel at J.R. Thorn's writing, which I’m learning happens often.

I don’t want to spoil anything for any of this world so I’ll just say READ IT. Or listen to it. Just … experience it, you won’t be sorry. I’m off to read book 3 in the trilogy,Consumed. I don’t want it to be over, but I NEED it. Probably will re-read this down the line, it’s an addictive world.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Note:
I both read the ebooks and listened to the audiobooks.
Ebooks are formatted beautifully.
Audiobook, The Vampire Curse: Royal Covens, is narrated absolutely perfectly. Narrator Vanessa Moyen has a very smooth voice (that even withstands speeding up the audio), perfect enunciation and great tone. A 5-star performance.

This book ends on a wicked cliffhanger; best to be ready with book 3,Compelled. Don’t say I didn’t warn you. ;)

#3: CONSUMED

“... A girl gets used to things in the paranormal world.” —Evie, Consumed by J.R. Thorn

^I feel like that line sums up this whole trilogy, (and the series that follows it, Fortune Academy: Year One). This book is the exciting conclusion to the Royal Covens trilogy and picks up after a killer cliffhanger in book 2, so be sure you read them in order.

(Absolutely love the sneak peek at Lily and some of the rest of the crew from Fortune Academy!)

Definitely found myself wishing more real-world people could be like Evie. Maybe read this and take some inspiration from lines like this one:
“I didn’t do things to benefit me; I did them because they were the right thing to do.”—Evie.

5 stars.
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Note:
I listened to the audiobook. It’s narrated absolutely perfectly and I cannot stress this enough. 5-star performance.

At the time of this review, included in Kindle Unlimited and available on Audiobook.

And don't forget to read on into the next series in this world, for more Lily ...

Very Entertaining

I really liked this series. The characters were likeable, the plot was intriguing and the writing was well done. My only criticism was inconsistencies which happen to drive my OCD brain crazy trying to figure out if what I thought I read was actually me misunderstanding or misreading. My brain will seriously disengage and continually go over the perceived discrepancies for a long time which unfortunately diminishes my enjoyment. This next bit is slightly spoilerish since I will detail the inconsistencies. 1. After escaping the sacrifice, the MCs portal back to the guest house which they find to be burning with Mr. and Mrs. Styles hanging in the doorway. In the next book the Styles are both alive. 2. Evie mentions several times that her bond is complete with Markus but not quite with Quinn since they hadn't been fully intimate. Later, Marcus takes her to complete the bond with Quinn which she does. Several chapters later, she mentions that the bond with Quinn wasn't complete. 3. Early on it was mentioned that even though she doesn't remember, Evie has been told that her father killed her mother. In the third book it was said that the demon touched wolves killed her parents. Anyway, despite these differences the series was very enjoyable and I would recommend it.

Another great series by J.R. Thorn

I loved this series! Im trying to make my way through all her books and this was a fun read. She does have a recommended reading order which I definitely think you should stick to when you start her books. The stories interwine with each other and you get a better insight to what the Echo of Calamity is. This story didn't have a suspenseful build up like some of her other books but I still was on the edge of my seat. I loved Evie and her guys. She did make me want to come through the book at times but it wouldn't be a good story if the heroine never did anything stupid haha. Glad this was a completed series because J.R. Thorn can really throw you some insane cliffhangers(Fortune Fae Academy anyone? 😒)

Damn hot

If you like sweet simpering romance. This book is NOT for you , it is a whirlwind of sexual desire , triggers and dark intense passions in an Amazing story line. This book has it all, end of the world scenarios , Bad guys , Vampires, Witches, Shifters, Angels and Demons. This is a series where you buckle up and go for the ride. The storyline is epic and the bonds with her mates are sweet confusing and down right naughty. The twists and turns keep you reading well past sleep time .so you better prepare snacks and get ready because you wont want to be disturbed while your in this world that J.R Thorn has created.

Overall, a good read

This is the first book from this author for me. I really enjoyed the plot line and the fact I could go from one book to the next. I would recommend a better editor though as sometimes the mistakes were glaring. Otherwise, the plot and characters were well developed. I will definitely be reading more!

Intense fantasy

A whirlwind fantasy with just the right amount of erotica. The shapeshifters, vampires, incubus’, familiars and witches all worked well together in the storyline. I really enjoyed how different this set was compared to most supernatural books. Fate witches, time warlocks, Gods of familiars. I really enjoyed this set and will be reading more by this author.

childlike mind

It was as if the author was extremely lonely and aroused. It was a lot of intercourse... unnecessary intercourse at that. She also kept including new bonds, new ways to get nasty and why was she always horny when somebody pretty was around ?!?!!that’s just strange. I would most definitely recommend therapy or maybe a boyfriend?

The Vampire Curse

Okay this was a good series. I enjoyed every bit of it. What made it more enjoyable was my girl Vanessa Moyen, I love how she gets into the book and brings them to life. Well for me it makes the books more enjoyable and it's like a movie in my head. And boy do I have a good imagination. Lol but you guys are going to love this series.

freaking amazing

These books were amazing. I finished the entire thing in less than a week and I’m about to start the next in the series. There’s a little confusion in the beginning but all is explained fairly quickly. Plenty of spicy scenes and an overall great read. 20/10 would 100% recommend.
