DS Hutton is back, in another dark and grim, blisteringly comic, sex and murder-fuelled serial killer thriller. It’s a grey October in Glasgow, and the rain is mournfully falling, a requiem for a city ravaged by the effects of the long summer’s virus. And now a killer enters the narrative, to wreak havoc, spill blood, and to lead the city in a dance of death. Each victim dies from a thousand brutal cuts, blood weeping from the empty eyes of the their death masque. A sister masque is left elsewhere, a rogue clue, planted by the killer to taunt the police. The danse macabre intensifies, the body count mounts higher, until Hutton, inevitably, inexorably, unbearably, is the last good man standing in the battle against a haunting and rapacious killer...“Douglas Lindsay is someone deserving to be spoken of as a master.” SHOTS“Lindsay is an underrated writer with an eccentric, blisteringly satirical voice.” SUNDAY EXPRESS“A master of comic crime.” SCOTTISH FIELD“Lindsay writes with an economy and skill all too rare in modern fiction.” Tony Black“Lindsay solidifies his place as one of the rising stars of tartan noir.” Publishers Weekly
It is now booked five in this series and Hutton is again reeling from previous and current events that leave his capability and sanity very much in question. Covid plays a major role in this book as they are well into it, and it's a possible motivation for the latest series of bizarre killings. It takes a little longer than normal for Hutton to fully spiral but I love this character as he is flawed like no other, and with no shame anything is possible. But wait, was that a flicker of hope at the end? Also new character DI Kallas is a great addition, hopefully more of her in future installments. 4 + stars and i am looking forward to the next book which has just been released.
D'S Hutton does not change even though the big names have changed at the station. Still like drinks, sex and generally being the bad guy. But in his own strange way, he always gets the criminal he is after but not always in the best way. Here is a character you can totally identify with and guarantee he will make you smile. Another cracking tale from this author.
A really well written story, that kept what happened to DCI Taylor to the end. Great how it was related to covid, which is really contemporary. Also great to introduce the new character of DI Kallas. More of the same please!
The first book in this series was seriously good and so are the rest that follow but im struggling with how pathetic the lead character is increasingly being portrayed and more so in this book. I sincerely hope hes given a break in the next one because he's a great character.
Perhaps I got enough of Hutton in the first books. Perhaps because I am old. Only thing I liked about the book was its treatment of Covid as a character.
Good read....however the constant use of the phrase "a beat" was like listening to someone give a speech with a verbal crutch,ummm,ummm,ummm.......very annoying.
I love the DS Hutton books. The lead is very likable in his own way and relatable. The setting in a Covid world draws you in even deeper than the earlier books and it's a challenge to put this one down
