Mike Lowery brings the FUN! Fully illustrated with cool facts future marine biologists will love, this book is easy to read, perfect for the reluctant readers, and those who love graphic novels will gravitate towards this informative trove of information.
I loved this book!
Kids will learn facts like: 1 drop of sea water has over 1,000,000 viruses! and the tiger shark is one of the most dangerous sharks in the water! Did you know some sharks can live up to 400 years? or that Octopus (octopi) have 3 hearts?
There's a bonus section teaching kids how to draw sharks and other sea creatures, jokes about the ocean and a list of reference books.
MUST HAVE, MUST READ for animal lovers, future marine biologists, non-fiction readers and anyone who loves Shark Week! I loved this book!
Grades 2 and up. Great for middle school and beyond. Read all my reviews at Young Adult Books--What We're Reading Now
A nonfiction graphic novel/collection of infographics about sharks and other sea creatures.
Lowery definitely knows how to keep readers' interest with the types of facts he includes and his illustrations. There were a couple things I had never heard before. Random fact sponges and marine life fans should enjoy this book.
Notes on content: Language: None Sexual content: None Violence: Some info on what they eat and dispelling of conceptions of how many people are hurt by sharks, but it also includes weird things found in a shark's stomach including people's arms and animal heads. Ethnic diversity: N/A LGBTQ+ content: N/A Other: Some of the text is in pretty small font, so not the best pick for readers with visual issues. Some readers may want to know he includes dates based on current evolutionary theory that may change as more evidence is gathered.
This book is full of super-fun facts. I've read a lot of ocean animal trivia things this year and while there are some classic facts that you're going to find in most such books, there were definitely plenty of things in this book I hadn't seen anywhere else!
The illustrations are adorable and make some creepy-looking creatures much easier to look at and learn about.
There's also a great sense of humor throughout!
Even with the plethora of cool info, this never felt like information overload to me like some similar books have. I read about half of it on my lunch break and finished the whole thing in less than a day.
I originally picked this up thinking it was the same illustrator as the Narwhal and Jelly comics. It's not (sorry for mixing y'all up), but I'm super glad I spotted it!
Learn everything you can imagine about sharks, oceans, and other underwater creatures in this kid-friendly fact book.
Over 100 pages of fun illustrations and quick facts will make this book appealing to kids of all ages. A ton of great information fills the book including the differences between each ocean, profiles on each shark species, and many a poop or snot related pop-out quick fact box. The book ends with really simple How to Draw instructions for various sea creatures. The well-thought out design (with kids in mind) will make this book a winner.
The cover promises “totally shocking facts!” and the book certainly delivers. The colorful book is broken up into parts like “Out Amazing Oceans!” “SHARKS!” and “Extreme Marine Habitats.” Each section is stuffed with really amazing information (Do you know what Point Nemo is? How about what The Bloop! actually was?) and delightful illustrations that accentuate facts and entertain readers.
Great choice for a Bluestem nominee! Excellent illustrations with lots of jokes and silly comments interspersed make this longer nonfiction book easily digestible. Though sharks are the main focus, there is also info on the oceans in general, other water creatures, and even saving the planet. I also appreciate the other sources listed for more info. There’s also a couple pages of jokes at the end and a “how to draw” section. I feel like Mike Lowery really knows his audience well.
What a fun title about sharks and other cool sea animals. Great illustrations and short blurbs pack a narrative punch for young readers. There's even supplemental material on ocean conservation, how to draw cartoon versions of some of the fish featured in the book, and fun jokes. This guy has also written a book about dinosaurs, and another one on space is coming soon.
Each page is hand-illustrated with facts and drawings scattered across the page. Could be read cover-to-cover, yet is more likely to be browsed. In addition to sharks, we get background about 5 different oceans, extreme marine habitats, weird and deadly sea creatures, a drawing guide, jokes, and a list of sources. Bluestem Nominee 2024
This was a cute and informative book about sharks, oceans, other creatures and how to help them. I especially appreciated how this book dispelled some myths about sharks and how it gave suggestions on how people can try to help save our oceans. On the otherhand, the layout drove me crazy and it could be confusing for kids. It's just too busy and clunky.
This is a great book about sharks with tons of supplemental information about oceans and other sea creatures. Coupled with Mike Lowry’s delightful illustrations, this book is sure to be a hit with you g shark lovers.
I have started referring to this as the "shark explosion book" in my head... it's an explosion of shark-tastic fun! I love all of the awesome illustrations and poring over the shark filled pages
While this book has a lot of facts, I was not a fan of its layout. It is way too cluttered and the jokes don’t land. The size of the text is inconsistent and hard to read.
A fun dive into the ocean as a giant picture book, with sharks as the favorite. Lots of cartoony drawings and small facts, organized into categories. Easy to read independently or with an adult. It's more for fun than study but does a good job organizing facts. I quibbled a few times over details (the giant Lego Dude mystery is fairly well understood, there are some scale issues with the shark drawings...) but in general this would be a fun way for facts-oriented kids to devour a lot of stuff about the sea.
There's a list of sources in the back but I'm not sure which are kid friendly. I liked the drawing chapter -- I bet I could have created some stuff if I weren't reading electronically with no pen in reach.
This book was really interesting. The part about saving the oceans was a little preachy maybe but it also made me sad when he predicted that by 2050 the oceans will have more plastic than fish. It shouldn’t be like that. You should recycle. It’s easy. It made me really sad earlier in the book when he was talking about that sub dive that they did into the deep dark part of the ocean and found the really rare fish but they also found a plastic bag. But overall I really loved this book and it had a lot of really great facts and it makes me want to save the oceans. I guess his part about the save the oceans worked though cause now I kinda wanna be an ocean advocate lol.
